Among Shonen Jump‘ mangas, Saint Seiya has had quite an international success. Especially in France where it was broadcasted as Les Chevaliers du Zodiaque on Club Dorothée, TF1’s main children/teen broadcast programs of cartoons and anime. And thanks to that success, various tie-in products appeared. Figurines, Lego toys, Music CDs, and video games. Such as Saint Seiya Soldiers’ Soul.Offered for Playstation 3, Playstation 4, and PC, this game is a Fighting Adventure product that allows its players to relive the arcs of Masami Kurumada’s classic. From the Sanctuary Saga to Asgard’s Apocalypse, then the Poseidon Polemic, and finally Hades’s Homecoming. Many adventures for the Goddess Athena’s Bronze knights; ready to defend her and save the world. Against other deities linked to the Greek and Nordic Mythologies. Which makes Saint Seiya a neat introduction to Europe’s folklore. To reincarnations of deities and mythological figures like Orpheus, Minos, Poseidon, Odin, Hades, and other omnipotent legends. In its story mode, players can revisit all the encounters Seiya and his comrades experience during their adventures. Including key moments from the original manga. Allowing non-fans to learn more about the storylines set within these arcs. Discover the strengths and flaws of Masami Kurumada’s storytelling. Which are similar also in the manga and 1980s anime release.Indeed, the series Saint Seiya presents a great universe where mythological figures still exist within our reality and continue to help our world in times of paranormal crisis. Where other mythological figures (Hades, Odin, Poseidon, etc.) and their soldiers try to assault Athena and her knights who fight back; or try to endanger our planet for selfish reasons. Of the chivalrous who come to the rescue, they wear gorgeous armours ranked according to their chivalry class (Bronze for the weakest, Silver for the sturdiest, and Gold for the legendarily). Each knight representing a constellation in the sky and using their Cosmos to gather energy to accomplish powerful attacks. And among the most popular ones are Seiya (who represents Pegasus), Shun (who represents Andromeda), Ikki (who represents the Phoenix), Hyoga (who represents the Swan), and Shiryu (who represents the Dragon). Each having specific personalities and interaction dynamics with one another. Giving off nice moments to all who discover their stories. But in its flaws, the series reproduces repetitive story structures. For each arc, the same situation. Which is the Goddess Athena getting cursed or jailed under a curse or using her power under a time constraint which a powerful nemesis has put her into. While Seiya and his friends must rescue her quickly before she passes away or the world is cursed. And in its fights, the series repeats a lot its story; where the Bronze knights encounter an enemy whom they first fight with their attacks, but are quickly punched back by the adversary in a critical situation. Until the knights, in dire distress, summon their inner strength and expand it at a level that allows them to vanquish their opponent. And some knights like Shiryu tend to repeat the same patterns, either by removing their armour to fight more boldly, getting blind or non-blind when a deus ex machina cures him. In Shun’s case, his refusal to fight forces his brother Ikki to rescue him many times. And this kind of narrative actions happens several times for many battles. Which makes you astonished at how a series like Saint Seiya, for its grand settings and characters, presents such redundancy. Especially as the knights’ armours weaken fast and are replaced by superior versions that are still crushed down into pieces and replaced by stronger ones.So it can be a bit disappointing to see the same story narratives displayed four times into different settings. And I think this repetition is part of the reason why the original Saint Seiya manga was cancelled after the Hades arc. Because the series did not escape its creative bubble and did not push itself forward with its narration. Had it done so, then it would have gotten the conclusion it eventually got several years later. As such, I wish that Masami Kurumada had worked alongside another co-writer as well, helping him find more diverse situations and resolutions than the ones he presented. That would have given to the story the cosmic truth it never got to present entirely. With situations that could have involved either the human world, or a unity between mythological figures and cruel human beings.Nevertheless, for all its repetitive flaws, Saint Seiya‘s storyline remains quite a great adventure for its actions, emotional story, cultural settings, and incredible artwork Masami Kurumada presented. Though for those who might not have read the manga, they might be confused by certain plotholes in the game’s adaptation as at one moment Shiryu propulses himself and a Golden Knight into the Cosmos and we don’t learn how Shiryu escaped that lethal setting to participate in the Asgard chapter. Nor do we learn, in the Hades`s Arc how he recuperated his sight after losing it too many times before. So to those who might not have read the manga series or seen the anime, take this game as an introduction to the lore and story world of Saint Seiya. As an appetiser of something richer than what is shown here.Regarding its gameplay, the fighting dynamics occur on a 360 degrees 3D stage. Either a temple linked to a specific knight, an Asgard landscape, an undersea palace with rooms and corridors, or, for the Hades level, an underground castle that leads to the Inferno and other dimensions. All of them beautiful stages superbly modelled and rendered with great textures. For each fight, the characters can kick, punch, and perform combos set to their favourite moves. Including throw attacks linked to the knights’ super powers. For its energy bars, you have an endurance bar and a Seventh level one that can make your knight obtain a superior level of Cosmic energy. Allowing you to crush massive blows and attacks on your enemies. Giving forth incredible animation sequences where the characters pull their attacks. All of them well animated and impressive. Though I did notice how, for these moments, the brightness of the images is dimmed down severely, hurting the impact of those animation scenes. Was that decision due to concerns of epileptic seizures caused every since the Pokemon controversy; with its Porygon episode that gave massive epileptic attacks to its viewers? Who knows. Either way, this decision does affect the impact of those animations and does not give them the full quality they deserve. In its animation and character designs, the work is excellent. The models are detailed, their armours impressive, and their animation poses very well worked. Although for several characters, I did notice their mouth animations being at times not animated properly and several times some characters’ hair tips shaking a little bit for no reason at all. Probable because those parts were not perfectly rigged by the artists. Nothing alarming, but you do notice this during certain scenes if you play the game on a big screen. As for the music, the composer did for the game a great job. Using electronic music that fits perfectly with the great moments of the story. And it is wonderful that within the game you can obtain the tunes of the music so you can listen to them again and again. Either while studying or while reading the original manga itself. As for the voice actors, their performances were excellent; perfectly fit for each character in the game.Regarding its other features, you can obtain various armours for your characters, but also other Bronze knights that were absent in the story mode, such as Jabu, knight of the Unicorn. Bronze knights that you can play as or against not in the story mode, or during the Fighting Match section of the game. Furthermore, there is even a mode where you can fight online with upgraded characters set according to key phrases you obtain during the game, strengthening them for your online matches with other players. In conclusion, Saint Seiya Soldiers’ Soul game remains a pretty good game experience for fans of the Shonen Jump magazine and of Masami Kurumada’s classic.Worth playing for its fighting matches and concepts and for reliving crucial moments of the manga series.

For a Saint Seiya fan, this is a must!Very fun, and it brings excellent memories from the original Anime. It's in Japanese (original voices it appears). The story line is for the 4 stories - Sanctuary, Asgard, Hades and Poseidon, so there's a lot to do!It has different modes, battle, online (multiplayer), story mode and others (apologies as I'm writing this just a few days of just playing the Story mode). The battle mode is very similar to DragonBall games, 3D fighting style, very similar to the PS3 version, but the Big bang attach (reaching the 7th sense) scene is great! you can see the typical cutscene from the cartoons! very very cool for a fan.

As Saint Seiya is one of my favourite anime series of all time, I knew I had to get this since accessing the manga is kind of difficult since Knights of the Zodiac has out of print and hard to find volumes.Great for all fans of the franchise.

Good if you are a big fan of Saint Seiya. However the graphics are not worth of a PS4 and the story line could have been developed a bit more. Still happy to see all the saints back.
