I've been playing both the open beta and the pre-order launch of this game, and have been enjoying my time cruising the seas and blasting the canvas trousers off pirates and Johnny Foreigner. It certainly makes a change from the elves, spaceships and robots that are the common currency of most MMOs.The most obvious departure from the others - and for me at least the core of the game - is the ship to ship combat, which can become surprisingly involved tactically, involving as it does "reading" the wind direction and using it to best advantage, positioning your vessel to avoid enemy fire, choosing the correct ammunition to reduce the opposition and, when the conditions favour it,boarding and looting other ships. The face to face sword combat onboard ship and on shore works in a more conventional icon driven manner, with players choosing buffs, attacks, and defences as appropriate to the ongoing situation and their chosen fighting styles. It's not quite as satisfying as the ship to ship battles, and let down by some poor animation and rather sluggish response, but does the job well enough. The gameworld is comparatively small, partly because of the historical constraints of its real world setting and partly because it doesn't need to be enormous. This is not a "Get quest, wander, kill stuff, repeat until bored" MMO. It is about warring and trading within a relatively intimate environment, getting to know your territory, your enemy, and how best to make money for those all-important ship upgrades. No doubt new towns and environments will be added along the various coastlines as time goes by, but for now they're not needed. At the time of writing it's early days for the the player-run economy, with a few players getting rich quick, and others taking their first tentative steps. It will settle down in a month or three, as will the feature of combat between player nations for temporary control of territory, which has yet to go live.Overall then, Pirates Of The Burning Sea is an MMO with a rather different feel and a measure of original and enjoyable gameplay. I've dropped a star from the overall rating only because of a few annoying bugs which have yet to be swatted and because the detailing of the character models and their animation fall somewhat short of what we have come to expect from PC games in recent years.ADDENDUM: A few weeks on from launch it's becoming apparent that the game will ultimately fall into the hands of a high level hardcore, a number of whom who are unprepared to accept the presence of lower level players "messing up" (well, that's close to the exact phrase I saw in chat at the weekend) their PVP sessions by daring to try to take part. Most players are tolerant of newcomers, it should be said, but the griping of the minority is bound to put off the casual players that any MMO needs to survive, and which will already be in short supply for a game in which the brain has to be engaged to play.I'll add that the balance of the EU servers is entirely wrong. Dedicating whole servers to individual languages has only led to the vast majority cramming themselves onto the English server, with resultant lag that often has ridiculous graphical consequneces. Surely a channels system could be sorted out?

It is unfortunate the guide is now so outdated.I do believe if you want to purchase a valid guide you can from the official PotBS forums.Which will be up to date. This is probably the most fun MMO I have ever played, any review that starts off with I didn't even get through the 30 day free trial really rounds up the amount of play time some people put into the game, then slate it.It's fantastic, especially in the higher levels. I have been playing since the launch date and I for 1 and extremely happy with the progress of this game. The supports is outstanding, the dev team always get back to you within 48 hours. The patches they have brought out have really made some positive changes and things just keep getting better and better.Once you hit max lvl 50,you still have LOADS of stuff to do not to mention the conquest side of the map where you are fighting with your fellow national members to win the map. There is no way anyone would be able to truly experience what this game has to offer, even with the 30 day free trial. It's huge and a lot more involved then WoW or AoC.The PvP element of this game is second to none. Honestly there is no game that comes close in today's market. The port battles 24 Vs 24 players is just insane and some times pretty scary. The avatar combat has really been worked on since launch and is now extremely involved and will keep you entertained for ages.I would certainly recommend this to someone who wants a truly fun and compelling MMO with PvP & Conquest map elements that will blow you away, quite literally in most cases.

I've been playing the BETA and stopped playing WoW and Tabula Rasa. It really is a good game, the fun you have sailing and taking care of your ship is fantastic. The crafting is great - rather than just collect as you go along and craft every now and then, you have to plan, travel and look for plans and ingredients. The quests are well thought out, and level progression is great. The combat split at the moment between ship based, and third person avatar. The avatar combat has only just been introduced, and although having 3 different styles, with skill points you can customise - it still needs work. The ship based combat is fantastic, nearly faultless, and great fun. The other part of the game, non combat, is done 3rd person, and in small towns all with the same combination of shops / quest givers. The graphics are top rate, the sailing parts, which make up 90% of the game, are absolutely top rate.As for end game - the PvP is based around taking control of ports in the Caribbean, and apparently works well. All the basics for a MMO are there; socities (guilds), groups, instances, solo quests, maps, auction houses, inventories, crafting (you can get by without player crafted goods, but they are inferior), even in BETA there is a healthy economy going on. One I'm definately going to play, SONY have a winner on their hands here...

First off, this game has now gone Free To Play! So you could actualy download and play the game for free, no purchase necessary. Though if you buy the game you receive 1 months free membership to the captains club which will give you access to ship and economy slots that you otherwise would'nt have as a free to play user. Once the one month is up you get to keep them indefinatley. My advice download it play it FTP for a trial and if you like it invest in the one month membership. The game itself is a great representation of this genre and no other game which has dipped it's toe in the waters of the 1700's caribean comes close. The PvE is Ok if thats your thing and the economy side is simple and yet one of the best I've encountered, but the real driving force behind playing this game is very much PvP and RvR. Port Battles including 44 ships of the line and heavy frigates are great, and in the open sea 6v6 group battles and 1v1 solo battles are great. The skill needed as a player, knowing your ships best points of sail and your opponents weakneses makes winning battles extremely rewarding. However as a beginner you must be prepared to lose a lot.All in all as a lover of the genre and mmorpg's this game has had me engrossed for months.

This is a truly brilliant game. I am currently level 36 and the fun never stops. I must say I am surprised by some reviews stating that it is too complex. I am new to the Massively Multiplayer Online field (apart from dabbling with guild wars) and I find it very easy to get around. The storyline missions are entertaining, and the other hundreds of missions are fun to play. Meanwhile the ship combat is stunning, and while there are still improvements to be made with avatar combat I have full faith that the FLS developers will keep on improving the game. The subscription fee seems to be the part of life in MMO games these days, and while I have always been against these fees I simply couldn't refuse to pay for a game this good.As for longevity, the game has a great deal of potential. But be warned, if you are the impatient type this is not the game for you.

Only three days in (pre boarding started on Monday) but as time goes on this game is really starting to grow on me. Even at an early stage the missions are varied (everything from pirate fighting to raiding Mayan ruins) and the fighting at sea is easy to learn but I expect hard to master! Had my first run in with player pirates last night and it brought back fond memories of Eve online. A nice smooth mini launch. still a few bugs around but if you would like a change from the traditional online game or just love the thought of sailing under the Jolly Roger (a flag , not a bloke!) then you should give this a try.In response to the other posters,I pre-ordered the game through Amazon but to get into pre boarding had to order a pre-order pack from another retailer.

As all new MMOs it obviously needs a good deal of polishing, but I believe it has a great potential. The economy is 100% player driver, be that for good or worse. You can cruise around in your lovley lil ship and yarr till your hearts content. Pirate, French(no thanks!), British or Spanish. Pirate has 1 career, which obviously is pirate. The real nations have 3 chocies. Freetrader, Naval Officer or Privateer. The ship combat is very realistic, but a bit slow, hence my 4 rating in fun. I would definatley recommend this game if you're fed up with *insert MMO here* :)

I dont understand all teh criticism for this game. Alright i was reluctant to buy it given the bad press but an overwhelming sense of Arrrr drove me to get it. This was not a mistake. I love this game more than I ever loved wow and I played that for two years. This game is freer, lighter and more fun. The graphics as you've probably heard are amazing. Learning the game is fine, you soon pick up everything you need to know. There are a number of tutorials. Seriously if you've been looking for a pirate mmorpg this delivers o so well.
