With a sleek, robust black design, simple two button interface and easy to attach toothbrush heads, the Sonicare ProtectiveClean definitely looks the part. In futuristic fashion, the device comes to life with white lights in your hand as you pick it out of the box. Attaching a brush head will automatically select the brushing program and intensity for you (you can disable this if you wish). One press of the power button and the brush delivers its program, which varies slightly depending on the one selected. If you turn off the power during brushing to empty your mouth, the brush will remember where you were in the cycle and resume upon turning the power back on - just as you don't leave it too long.Once the cycle is complete, the brush turns itself off, which I find a handy feature. There are three main programs - clean, white and gum care - each designed for a different kind of toothbrush head, though you can use others if you have the automatic selection mode turned off. Clean is a 2 minute program split into four segments for each corner of the mouth. White does the same as Clean with an extra 30 seconds for the top and bottom front teeth. Gum Care mode is 3 minutes long. There is also a program for those new to using an electric toothbrush, which introduces the brushing intensity gradually over the course of several uses. The brush comes with a carry case which stores the handle and two brush heads (also included). Both brush heads are the W2 Optimal White type. The case is made of thick plastic with a strong clip, though the areas inside for keeping the brush heads can be a little finicky and they have a tendency to pop out if you accidentally nudge them while trying to get one of them back in the case. The box states the brush delivers 31 000 strokes per minute and given how it felt, I don't think that's an exaggeration! As a result, you indeed get a very thorough clean, but on the downside, the humming vibrations of the toothbrush handle and head may be unbearable for some - especially those who have heightened sensitivity to sensory input. The toothbrush will automatically select maximum intensity (level 3) on attaching a W2 toothbrush head, but you can alter the intensity to level 1 or 2 while the brush is in operation, by pressing the lower button. Level 1 is pretty gentle while Level 2 was tolerable. The vibration of the brush in my mouth at Level 3 made me feel a little nauseous at first. If you have slightly too much toothpaste/saliva in your mouth at this level, you can end up with it spraying all over the place. The lower two levels didn't seem to generate this problem. My last concern is that I would feel somewhat uneasy about putting a device that is emitting radio frequencies (albeit mild ones) into my mouth on a daily basis. The concept of smart toothbrush heads is appealing on a fictional level but seems unnecessary in reality, except maybe for those with poor memories that would need reminding as to the kind of toothbrush head they're using and whether or not it needed changing. Otherwise this seems like more of a thing one could keep track of just by looking at the state of the bristles, and each toothbrush head has its type code written on it anyway.

The Philips Sonicare 6100 is a good looking toothbrush – I probably wouldn’t have chosen a pink one but doesn’t affect use. I’m more of an Oral-B electric toothbrush user so for me, getting used to the much larger head took a bit of getting used to but I like the fact this one comes with 2 brush heads owing to the fact they are £8 each! This is due to the technology which tracks your usage so will automatically select the best intensity/mode setting and knows when to alert you to when it’s time to change the head but they need replacing every 3 months anyway so you’re spending £32 a year on brush heads at a minimum. For me,I think it’s a bit too much of a gimmick; I can easily remind myself when it’s time to change the head and I can easily change the settings before I start the brush to what I am looking for so they are definitely more of a want than a need. This handle has 3 modes – Clean, White and Gum Care and actually, it’s only the supplied heads that are recommended for the White mode while you’d be recommended to buy the Plaque Control head for Clean mode and Gum Care head for Gum Care mode but all 3 modes can still be used with the supplied head. Each mode also has 3 intensity settings and when you first switch it on it’s on the highest setting so worth putting it down to 1 to begin. I like that it has the timer and will change vibration every 30 seconds to let you know it’s time to move to the next area of the mouth and will auto switch off after 2 minutes. If I find it’s a bit too intense I don’t find the handle very user friendly to change it while it’s still in my mouth to stop it spraying everywhere although this does cut down on accidently changing it while in use. There is a pressure sensor which changes the vibration too to let you know you are pressing too hard although it’s perhaps not noticeable enough. I do really like the fact you can deactivate easystart which gently increases the power over the first 14 uses while your mouth gets used to it, the brush head replacement reminder and the pressure sensor although not sure how much battery life that saves. One thing the manual doesn’t mention at all is how long it takes to charge the battery – it definitely takes hours but I’d say less than 12. It’s only the box that mentions it lasts 14 days. Overall, if I were to consider buying a new brush handle, I don’t think the features would be enough for me to justify the high price point. It’s definitely well made and works very well but so does my normal Oral-B electric toothbrush and it’s far cheaper. I did find this one whitened my teeth in a week but I put that down to using my old brush manually more than as an electric brush but it still doesn’t give dazzling white results (even with a whitening toothpaste).

Years ago I was an electric toothbrush cynic. How good could they really be? Surely an old fashioned brush with a bit of elbow grease and some expensive toothpaste would do the job just as well? But, in January 2015, I got my first Sonicare toothbrush, version one of this model in fact (which is still going strong I hasten to add), and my World (or at least if my World consisted of just my teeth and gums) was rocked. My teeth became noticeably cleaner, whiter and even my dentist was impressed. Naturally then I was looking forward to putting this newer, improved version, through it's pacesThe brush handle is well designed, comfortable to use, takes a 24 hour initial charge and then lasts around 2 weeks between charges. The handle has 3 brushing modes, and 3 strengths. When using the brush in each mode it will buzz/beep loudly after a define period of time to alert you to move to a different part of your mouth, and the power automatically cuts off when your brushing is done, after either 2 or 3 minutes, depending on mode.Philips recommend angling the brush towards your gum line when in use and it certainly seems to do the trick, shifting any bits of grub etc as it goes, and afterwards leaving your mouth feeling extremely clean, exactly the way it does when you come out of the dental hygienists's chair. The brush head Pairs with the handle and there’s a small indicator light on it to tell you when it needs changing. It is difficult to review a toothbrush, when you think about it, but let me say this; for anyone sceptical about Sonicare toothbrushes (or electric ones in general I guess) then I would urge you not to be. I took care of my teeth in the past but, as I said earlier, even my dentist noticed when I'd been using my first Sonicare brush for a month or so. My teeth feel infinitely cleaner, and are whiter too, again to the point where I and lots of other people have noticed it. This all means I have no hesitation in recommending this brush to you without reservation. The brush itself and the way it works are all without the need for gimmicky Bluetooth nonsense along the way. Well worth the money! Finally, If I had to gripe, and in my view this does not warrant the loss of a star, it would've been nice for one of the deluxe brush heads to have been included. This ad other replacements can be pricey, which must be factored in when investing in a brush like this. All in all though I simply would not use another type of toothbrush now, and that is down to how excellent this product is.

The first thing that hit me with this toothbrush was the huge price, the second was the cost of a new head. This is one expensive toothbrush! So, is it worth it and does it do what it says on the label?I have been using this for a little less than a week, and I have noticed that my lower teeth are brighter/whiter, my top set - not so much but I guess yes, a little whiter too.How does it feel? Definitely thorough, the intensity settings allow a comfortable level to be used, although I didn't find the highest level with the supplied brush uncomfortable. It is a much slimmer body than my present OralB and the toothbrush head is also much slimmer and feels longer, though the brush lengths are comparable. It feels much nicer to use and because of its slimness, the toothbrush is easier to manoeuvre around my mouth. The timers are similar, and the pressure sensitivity seems to have a higher tolerance than my OralB. The warning light so often shows on the OralB that I tend to ignore it, whereas the Philips requires quite some pressure before it sounds off; the Philips feels a more sensible and useable pressure.Charging is similar and the storage much the same as any other electric toothbrush I have used. The actual brushes this toothbrush requires are 'enabled' heads so the two can 'sync', and the toothbrush can perform its allotted tasks like letting you know when to buy another £5 to £9 odd replacement head. In comparison, the Oral B heads are less than half the cost. But, my teeth do look a little whiter, that I can't deny and I have been using the Oral B for some considerable time before this recent change, and its from that base line that my teeth are a little whiter I can't wait to see if they continue to shine even more! and I can in all honesty say that they 'feel' cleaner. Is it worth the money? Well that's the question, if you can afford it then yes, its well worth it, if its too steep, then there are others in the range that are much cheaper and profess similar results for a lot less money and with cheaper replacement heads. For me, I will obviously continue to use it and I will replace these heads when the brush indicates a change is necessary, but I didn't have to pay for this brush, its with me for review. Would I pay out £300 for the unit? If I could afford to spend this much on a toothbrush then I probably would, but as things stand, No, I don't think I would.

First of all - this is a great toothbrush. That said I am comparing it with manual brushing - not with other electric toothbrushes. Coming from manual brushing my first thoughts were how complicated and involved electric brushing seems to be in comparison to doing the job by hand. That thought does still stand - however in use, it is really not that complicated (simple actually). And the great benefit is that your teeth do get an exceptionally good clean. Further to that - when the hygienist asks if you brush electric - the answer is finally yes!Good points... It comfortable to hold and use - and has a number of modes and options to help you get the most out of it.Perhaps irrelevant to the cleaning of teeth it is also aesthetically pleasing - though at the price it should be. There are three intensity levels - a default setting is selected for different brush head types though these can be overridden as required. Genuine Philips replacement heads use RFID tags which the brush can detect (presumably indicating "authentic Philips head" as well as head type). The currently selected intensity is clearly visible via LEDs on the brush. Accompanying the intensity settings are three modes of operation - Clean, White and Gum Care. Each performs a slightly different task - and each has a different recommended brush type to be used with it. Again the active mode is neatly displayed by way of illuminated LED.There are a number of additional features; brush head replacement warning, pressure warning (pressing too hard) and an EasyStart mode. All or any of these can be disabled if desired. The 6100 comes with a recharging dock (cable plug intended for bathroom type plug sockets) and an excellent travel case that will keep it safe from damage during transit. The rechargeable battery is not replaceable. Once it is no longer functioning - the unit must be replaced. The single problem with the 6100 is its cost. It is very expensive - as are the replacement heads. This is a toothbrush for the wealthy and perhaps those for whom toothcare is important - whatever the cost.

The Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 6100 electric toothbrush is supplied with a charging unit (2 pin plug), a plastic travel case and 2 toothbrush heads. There are 3 modes – clean, whiten and gum care – and 3 levels of intensity plus a pressure sensor which changes vibration to alert you that you are brushing too hard. The toothbrush is supplied charged with the recommendation that it be fully charged after the first use. One small item which I really like is the protective head for fitting over the brush when not in use – a simple, hygienic measure yet not one I’ve come across before.Having used the toothbrush at least twice a day for almost 5 weeks now, and only having needed to charge it once,I must admit that I am very impressed with its performance. I have used another dentist recommended brand of electric toothbrush for years and was initially sceptical about the claims Philips made about it being clinically proven to white teeth in one week and have more effective cleaning. However, after getting used to the very different, and initially not very pleasant, sensation of the sonic versus the regular electric brush I can confirm that my teeth are noticeably whiter. I also feel as if I’ve just experienced a professional clean at the dentist’s surgery after each brush. A word of caution though – when you have finished cleaning your teeth turn the brush off before taking out of your mouth, as I found to my cost how powerful the vibrations are when specks of toothpaste etc covered my sink, mirror and tiles!!This is all very positive and I am definitely converted to this Philips Sonicare brush however I feel I must address the rather large elephant in the room, namely the initial purchase price which is further compounded by replacement brush heads costing in or around £8 each. While the brush has the latest smart technology and I have found it to be very effective, it is most certainly a sizeable investment which may make it outside the grasp of many. As with most things in life you need to weigh up costs against benefits. 4*

Some years ago someone, who shall remain nameless, said that electrical toothbrushes were for lazy people who would not and could not use a manual toothbrush. However, it is very clear that they were ill informed and that electric brush cleans better than a hand held one. This is an electric toothbrush, which gives your teeth a brilliant and satisfying clean. The vibrations against your teeth are not too bad, and this unit helps to keep your gums healthy. What is a nice, and a useful feature is the fact the toothbrush will tell you if you are applying too much pressure when brushing. The changing of the brush heads once done is a simple task. You get a fair amount of time between charges, which is good if you work away from home or you’re going away for a week’s holiday – and really do not want to drag around yet another charger! The unit as whole feels well-made and robust, the toothbrush part is comfortable to hold and use. The cost of replacement heads is more than reasonable. As other reviewers have mentioned and think it is worth repeating (and you may need it when away from home), that you will need purchase a two pin plug, and you will need to either a shaving point in the bathroom or a two into three pin adapter for a regular wall socket. The Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 6100 Electric Toothbrush The look is very sleek. The feel of the handle casing is much smoother than the older versions. One of the most notable improvements is to the brush head. With the preceding models, I was often troubled that I might be applying too much or too little pressure with the brush head. The new smart brush head takes away all the speculation by integrating a microchip in each brush head wear for you. An advanced pressure sensor measures the pressure you apply while brushing. If you apply too much pressure, the toothbrush gives direct feedback—changing the vibration & therefore the brushing sensation—alerting you of the need to reduce the pressure you’re applying.

This toothbrush looks good, feels good and is easy to use. Every feature you can think of in a modern electric brush is here... but then, at this price it should be.The brush emits a sonic pulse that breaks up plaque both above and below the gumline. There is 3 modes to choose from : Whitening; Clean; and gum care. In addition, there is a pressure sensor to prevent damage through heavy pressure whilst brushing, 3 intensity settings ( which I assume makes the brush rotate more or less frequently), as well as a timer to ensure you brush for long enough. The package is completed with a charging stand and a travel case. All well and good, and I can't deny that the brush is effective at what it does...but then so are other cheaper makes. As for the features- well, as adults do we really need a brush that tells us how long to brush for and how much pressure to use? It does seem as though a simple task such as brushing your teeth has become over complicated in an attempt to sell goods such as this- but then that's just my opinion. What Philips have done here is to make the detachable brush heads 'Smart'. That is, they contain a chip that lets the brush recognise what type of head is connected and adjust the mode accordingly, as well as tell you when the head should be replaced. Thus, only Philips own replacement heads will work in this way, thereby preventing lower priced brush heads from being used......My final verdict? Well, if you don't mind spending such an amount of money on a toothbrush then here is one that works well and looks good. Personally I would opt for a cheaper make or model as I don't think this is worth the price tag currently charged. The attempt to force you to continue only with their own make of replacement head also puts me off somewhat. Even Philips themselves have cheaper alternatives on the market that can do the job equally well.....

If you already use an electric toothbrush chances are it is either a Braun/Oral-B or a Philips as these are the current market leaders. My wife and I have used both brands over the years and I personally prefer the Braun/Oral-B system while my wife is a big fan of the Philips Sonicare range – our dentist says both give very good results. My wife has been using this new Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 6100 model for the last couple of weeks and has found that it meets, or exceeds, the performance of the Philips models she has used previously. This ProtectiveClean 6100 model is towards the top end of the Philips Sonicare range of toothbrushes – with a hefty price tag to match – so may not be the best place to start if you have not used a sonic model before. The 6100 is attractive and well-featured with a pressure sensor, 3 cleaning modes and 3 intensities; it is available in three colour options – pink, black or white – and the package includes a travel case, a charger plus a bonus brush head (but there is no way to distinguish one head from another for multiple users!). I personally don't like the sonic buzz from this type of toothbrush but my wife doesn't mind it and she finds that the sonic action does help to prevent plaque build-up on her teeth better than an ordinary electric toothbrush does. This Philips Sonicare ProtectiveClean 6100 is pretty much a state-of-the-art model and if you can justify the high price – currently around three hundred pounds from Amazon – then you will probably not be disappointed with the results. However, if you are considering your first sonic toothbrush then start with a basic model to see how you get on with the cleaning method – it does not suit everyone. Five stars for performance but only three stars for value gives a four star rating overall.

This is a good quality Sonicare toothbrush, with some useful features. It's not the first one I've owned, and like the others, it has pressure sensitive technology that alerts you to the fact that you are brushing too hard. It also has an alert for when the brush head needs replacing - typically after three months - useful for some, and the fact that it comes with a replacement head is handy. There is one big minus point, however. A hard shell travel case is supplied - and the body of the brush doesn't fit in it. At first, I thought it was me, but despite the fact that the plastic case inner is printed with the outline of the brush, and shaped to fit, it doesn't manage it.It wasn't even a case of it being just slightly too snug. It doesn't fit. That's a real shame, for the price, and the name, one would expect better. The USP of this brush is that teeth are safely whiter. Apparently. The problem with me is that I was using a Sonicare brush before that is remarkably similar in performance, and brush head... so no, mine weren't. I do like the fact that I'm alerted to the fact that I need to change the position of the brush in my mouth and move to another quarter. However, some standard battery toothbrushes now have this feature. You will need a two pin shaver adaptor, or similar, to use this. The good news is, it arrives with some charge, so if you haven't got one, you can use your brush for a day or two while you sort one out. The bad news is it's a 24 hour charge, so you will need something else.I wanted the travel case to take mine away with me on a break, so finding the brush didn't fit was a downer. I also dislike the fact that special feature brush heads aren't included.Hence four stars, not five. Sorry, for this price, it's got to be perfect.

I do prefer a rechargeable electric toothbrush to a manual (the dentists recommend an electric toothbrush too). A manual toothbrush just doesn't clean as well, and a non-rechargeable electric toothbrush eats up the batteries. This one eats up the electricity too, it takes a while to fully charge each time, but I suppose they all do. And I do worry what that is doing to my electricity bill but the charge seems to last longer on this toothbrush than my previous Oral-B one. This brush has some special features like a timer, at 30-seconds a time to allow you to do each quarter of your mouth at the same rate over the 2-minutes. It also has different brush heads that do other things.Mine came with two W2 Optimal White brush heads (so I have a spare) which are designed to whiten your teeth a bit more. It's hard to measure whether after a couple of weeks my teeth are whiter or not but maybe they are, although there is certainly no dramatic difference. There are also brush heads separately available for the other modes of the toothbrush, clean and gumcare, The manual says about these brush heads that "an RFID chip inside the brush head communicates with the toothbrush handle... the handle recognises the brush head and selects the right mode" which sounds impressive. And the brush heads seem easy enough to get replacements for when the lights on the handle tell me they need replacing. Also inside is a 2-prong charger and a carry case which will come in useful when I go on holiday. The brush looks good too with the brilliant white lights shining bright when I use it, and it sounds good as well with a humming sound when in use.My teeth do feel clean and feel healthy and that is the main thing.

I ordered this toothbrush for my wife and she has been using it every day for several weeks now. It's her first experience of an electric toothbrush having been sceptical in the past but this high end model seems to have convinced her to give it a go....and she's totally converted!I already have a Philips sonicare toothbrush which I love, this one is even more hi spec and has whitening setting as well as a sensor to tell you if you are brushing too hard. It also has a quad pacing function which lets you know when to switch to the next part of your mouth so you can consistently clean your whole mouth (a pitfall of manual brushing....i always was guilty of just giving the front bits a bit of a scrub then giving up....this helps you to get into a routine). There's 3 separate settings, whitening for higher level of stain cleaning, gum care (starts off more gentle those with more sensitive teeth) and a normal mode. Each one has 3 intensity settings so you can easily turn it down if things feel a bit much. The design is lovely, smooth pink unit with a normal brush style head. The heads are expensive to replace but if you're looking for a top notch toothbrush then it's worth it.The buttons are easy to use and nicely designed. It also comes with a nice carry case and 2 brush heads. It holds it's charge really well. We've not been away with it yet so it trends to get a regular charge as we have a 2 pin socket in out bathroom unit where it sits.I don't doubt the advertised 2 week charge though which is handy of you're taking it away.An expensive but very impressive product. My wife has said her teeth have never seemed cleaner and definitely seem a bit whiter. Highly recommended.

I've used both Philips and their main rival, Braun, electric toothbrushes for some time now and although I generally favour Braun the Philips Sonicare are impressive and effective tools in themselves. This latest model is pretty expensive and has all the bells and whistles one would expect given the price range; variable modes to suit sensitivity and gum care, pressure sensor, quadrant timer, even a smart mode setting to pair the brush-head with the handle to alert you to when the head needs changed (although I prefer to use my own judgement on that one). The battery life of this model is also fairly impressive as all the electric toothbrushes I've used usually only get a week or so from eachcharge – this one is still working 11 days after I set it up.The action of the Philips brushes is like a fast vibration which cleans in a different way from the rounded heads and spinning action of the Braun; I often feel that the Philips is gentler on the gums and reaches parts of the gum-line the Braun sometimes misses, but the Braun heads are (quite frankly) cheaper to replace which leads me to alternate between them - though I'm lucky to have the option to do so. There isn't really that much between then though, so if Philips` more traditional heads suit individual preference, go with it – just be aware that the heads in general (and these smart heads in particular) cost a bit more to replace. The unit comes with a charging dock which requires a two-pin adaptor and a travel case.A very good electric toothbrush I'm happy to use, but that rather heavy price tag and replacement brush issue is something you may want to consider.4 ½ stars, ideally.

This is a very fancy sonic toothbrush from Philips. Unlike other sonic brushes I've used in the past, the head does actually move, though you need to apply a gentle brushing motion in use. What sets this apart from probably any other brush I have used is the feeling of cleanliness after using. It really needs to be experienced. Teeth feel sparkly clean, like when you've just come out from the hygienist. It's this overall effectiveness and sheer quality of experience that leads me to the 4 stars. It's tempered really only by the price, which is impossible to justify, particularly when this model retails for $100 in the US.The quality of the build is great, it looks like it's going to be fragile but it is strong and elegant. The battery is pre-charged so you can use straight out of the box. The brush head pairs with the unit (whatever next!) so that it measures usage, particularly pressure, applying changes to the brushing movement to compensate for any over-brushing. This is very swish and clever, and I'm sure is the reason that my teeth feel so nicely cleaned afterwards (I have a tendency to over-brush). You are timed to 2 minutes in the regular cleaning mode, then the unit switches off, so you need to follow the 30-second quadrant signal closely. There are 2 other cleaning modes - whitening, and gum, and 3 intensities for each mode. This unit comes with 2 brushes and a carry case, as well as a base charger (2-pin, so you'll need an adapter if you don't have a 2-pin socket in your bathroom).Really great brush, knocked down 1 star for value.

The first day of use was a baptism of fire because I found it extremely strange and unpleasant in my mouth. My husband used the other brushhead and was delighted with it and suggested I tried using more pressure - problem solved! Every time I go for my check up my dentist berates me for the build up of scale on the inside of my lower four font teeth. Last week she praised me for having none and I told her that I had been using the Philips Sonic Toothbrush. Interestingly she told me that the sonic vibrations do actually help by destabilising the build up and once cleared should keep it away.My scoring explained:- The clean from this Philips brush is outstanding making my teeth and gums super squeaky clean - 5 stars.I've been using the brush twice a day for 2 weeks and there is no sign of the battery depleting - 5 stars. The brush is very lightweight and extremely comfortable to use - 5 star. Comes with a case which holds 2 brush heads (I think for the price Philips should have included 2 different heads as opposed to 2 identical - 4 star. The head's are expensive - 4 star. The brush itself, to me, is expensive but it does do exactly what it says and there is a noticeable difference to both the look and feel to my teeth and gums so whilst initially I was going to give this a much lower star rating, I cannot so - 4 star.Overall both my husband and I are now complete converts to the superior clean of Sonic and my other half is already hinting what he wants for Christmas.
