A Parker was my first fountain pen, given to me when I started secondary school many years ago. So I have a sentimental attachment to the brand, even though I've not used one of theirs for some time. The Jotter is an inexpensive entry (or re-entry) to fountain pens for someone wishing to know what all the fuss is about. It's supplied with a single cartridge but can also be used with a converter (not supplied) to draw ink from a bottle. The supplied ink is the Parker Quink blue that is instantly recognisable and immediately reminded me of my school exercise books. The advantage of a fountain pen is the smooth writing effect that gel pens try hard to emulate. Although this means you can write faster, the actual effect is to make you want to write in a more attractive way. I've recently got back into fountain pens as, after using a keyboard primarily for a number of years, my normal handwriting would make even a doctor blanch. My go-to budget pen has been the Pilot Metropolitan, which is around the same price. In comparison I found the Jotter nib was just as smooth in writing on Rhodia paper, which is fountain pen 'friendly'. A medium nib was supplied and normally is too wide for my liking in European pens but this wasn't too thick. In terms of looks, the Parker is quite subtly styled (some might say boring) with only the iconic arrow shaped clip to make it stand out. It is quite narrow though and for my large hands I found the fatter body of the Pilot to be more comfortable (see photos). It's also quite a short-bodied pen so really needs to be used 'posted' (with the cap stored on the end while in use) for comfort. For a budget price it's a nice pen and it writes very nicely, but suited to smaller hands as the Pilot Metropolitan is more comfortable in mine.

The Parker Jotter series of pens which also includes (or previously did) fountain pens, rollerballs and mechanical pencils is the backbone of their range and has been available in one form or another for many years. They are inexpensive workhorses while very functional and without those elements of design or construction that add to their cost without adding to functionality. The Parker Jotter Portobel Purple Chrome Trim Ball Pen Medium Nib is one of the more recent versions and newer colours of this classic ballpoint, a much earlier example of which was my long time work ballpoint used primarily to sign or complete multi-part document sets, and occasionally certain invoice and credit note sets, that incorporated pressure-sensitive copy-producing technology and where a ballpoint was the only effective writing tool. The barrel is plastic but sufficiently rugged, if other pens from the brand and of far greater vintage can be used for comparison. My old Jotter is still going strong although with more than a few scratches that accumulated over time. Although normally supplied with a medium-tipped 0.7mm refill, Parker also offer a fine point (0.5mm) refill but some can be found in a broader 1mm tip should you need one. The Parker refills are a common design and often copied and used by several other brands; they are therefore very easily available (both Parker's and copies) when required which, even with considerable use, may not be for some months. The writing point ejects and retracts at the press of the top button, a now classic design that is also much copied. The pen offers good value and could potentially last a lifetime if well treated. The pen is that often given by a certain insurer when you take out one of their life policies.

I like Parker pens, they seem to write with no splodges, leaks and they are nice to hold and write with. This is a classic design pen that uses the easy to replace cartridges. The pen comes in a presentation case, The outer cardboard sleeve is black and has the Parker name and emblem printed on it. The inner cardboard box slides out to reveal a piece of paper with information on refilling and care of the various pens in the range. Underneath is the pen held in place in the base firmly - you can even turn it upside down and it does not fall out.The pen unscrews to reveal the ink cartridge, so when empty, you buy the refills. This ones comes with a blue 1mm Medium nib,but thinner and thicker tips are available in different colours. The top half is stainless steel and has a clip to hold it in a pocket or bag, the bottom half is plastic, but is still comfortable to write with.I have been used to writing with a fountain pen, so the part where you hold is thinner than my usual pen, but is still comfortable. You do not need a lot of pressure to write with, the ink flows smoothly and consistently. The nib is secure in the pen holder until you click the top to lower the nib, and click the top again to retract it. This is a fairly noisy clicking sound.I really like this pen and would recommend it. If it is for yourself, you can get similar Parker pens without the gift box for almost half the price, so that's what I would purchase for myself. For a gift, then it is a nicely presented pen - if a little more expensive.

I'd seen reviews bring up questionable quality control with bad threading or sharp edges but I have no issues with mine. Similar to other reviews, the engraving of the Parker logo on mine is quite faint and scratchy. But this is apparently consistent with the manufacturer quality since production was moved from the UK to France.I'd also read reviews questioning the quality of the ink and the refill provided.I would have rathered black ink but I have no complaints about the quality of the blue quinkflow that came with the pen. It writes smoothly and comfortably. There are lots of other options of refills both from Parker and other brands,so the opportunity to upgrade is there if you see fit.I will say that it is much lighter and feels less sturdy than jotters I've had from years ago. But that being said, the all metal barrel is still very nice and and I'm sure will outlast plastic alternatives. It still has the familiar heavy and reassuring click mechanism that my older jotters had. It's a very slim pen, so may be uncomfortable if you have particularly shovel-like hands. It comes in a cardboard presentation box with a nice looking dark cardboard sleeve that slips over it. This has the Parker logo printed on it in gold.I think you still pay extra for the Parker name, and this is definitely their 'budget' offering. But it's an attractive looking pen that is infinitely more pleasurable to use than a plastic ballpoint. Don't expect anything too premium, but for what you pay it's still a solid choice.

The Parker Jotter is an iconic pen, in fact when I was younger, it used to be copied ruthlessly by cheapo pen manufacturers, and compatibility with replacement ink refil nibs was something that was marketed as important. However the ubiquitous parker fell out of favour as cheaper and increasingly improving budget pens dominated the market. Still, Parker soldiered on with the Jotter, and it since 1954 it has been, and remains a sturdy and reliable pen. Nothing about this Jotter feels flimsy or cheap, and it has a nice solidity and reasuringly loud click to the extend/retract nib mechanism.Personally, I find the Jotter is a whisker too thin to be completely comfortable to hold, though the matt finish of this pen is more pleasing to grip compared to the shiny finish pens. Whilst the traditional ink of a ball point pen is not as pleasing to use as a gel, this can quickly be remedied by choosing from parker's comprehensive selection of ink refils. There really is something for everyone in the range as there is a wide range of ink types, colours and thicknesses to choose from. The gift box is pleasing with a nice faux felt interior, and this pen would make a nice gift, particularly if the pen is engraved.Ultimately it's a matter of taste: If you find a slim pen comfortable to hold, and want a reliable pen that can take a good selection of nibs, this Parker Jotter is a good choice. I'd be happy to receive it as a gift.

This is a nicely packaged and presented lightweight Parker pen. The standard Parker refill is supplied - in this case it's a medium blue nib, which flows easily and writes as well as ever. The overall 'feel' of this pen isn't as solid as many of the more expensive Parker pens, visually it is slimline and less chunky than many. The violet barrel of the pen is a colour which generally will appeal to more women than men, and the slim, light construction makes it an ideal pen for the handbag. This is a click and pop out action spring loaded pen rather than a twist action pen, but for those anxious to keep handbag linings clean,a lightweight but sturdy presentation box is supplied. The metallic violet colour is one which should have a fairly wide age range appeal. This isn't really a pen for use in examinations or for taking notes at length, but one to have at hand for short notes or for when a signature is required I could imagine it being uncomfortable to hold after a while, having become used to gel grip pens as a degree student.A Parker pen is always an acceptable gift, with a relatively budget price and stylish appearance, this should appeal to many.

I can't help it, I'm a sucker for the Parker Jotter since I was bought one as a rite of passage when starting secondary school. It is an iconic pen but a great one because it is a lovely pen to write with and use generally from the balance to the weight/feel to the smoothness of writing to the satisfying 'click' when depressing the button. There are more expensive options but the jotter has class that means it is still worth choosing whether for daily use or as a gift. This edition is a rich dark burgundy-puce (red plummy purple) rather than a blue toned purple and looks very sophisticated, it comes bundled with blue ink but as with the jotter design it can be switched out whether it needs a refill or you wish to replace the ink colour,in our case it's being replaced with black. This is a lovely gift whether to yourself or another and has a lovely heritage with it, as this pen can be refilled and continued use for years unlike most pens now which are disposable, the gif box isn't a necessity but is a lovely touch and nice if you don't have a 'pencil case' to keep it safe between uses as this really isn't a pen for a communal pot.

This write like a dream. An absolute pleasure really. In fact it is so smooth I was forgetting that I was using a fountain pen. I'm also left handed, which often means that using such writing devices can set the whole thing back with scratched (etched) results, and a whole load of spilled ink ecerywhere. This hasn't happened. The main fault within the pen is its flimsy and light weight. Parker pens have seemingly adopted this theme in all of their pens nowadays. I somehow find it difficult to be happy about this uncompromising change. Thirty years ago the pens would have weighed twice as much. To.lighten this much seems toncheapen the entire range. Without making top obvious a comparison,I managed to pick up a similar non Parker pen a fortnight ago, which hasn't adapted itself to the lightened version. It doesn't even out as well with the writing nor general use of it, but it feels sturdy, and not as if it is about to snap in half at any given moment. I'm just saying that's all. I'd more than welcome the heavier tool's comeback.

There’s something about a Parker pen. They are stylish, delicate and look really great. As well as that, they are exceptionally comfortable to hold and produce a really nice bit of handwriting, too. The perfect pen all round. This particular pen has a pretty violet, stainless steel bottom half and a silver coloured, stainless steel top with the distinctive arrow clip. The pen is a push top and the button is neither stiff nor flimsy. The ink is blue and this particular nib is a medium size. It writes really well and doesn’t produce globs or blobs. The pen is also really quite light to hold, making it very comfortable. The pen comes in a thick cardboard box with an indented felt interior to hold the pen.It then slides into a hollow black sleeve with the Parker logo on the top in a gold colour.A great pen, perfect for a gift (such as graduation or new job) or just for someone - maybe yourself - who likes pens and stationery. I’ve just noticed all the other colours available in this pen - something for everyone! 5 stars.

I was first given a Parker ballpoint pen as a birthday present when I became a teenager and I’ve used one, on and off, ever since. I tend to prefer fountain pens, but they aren’t always practical (especially when travelling), so a good quality ballpoint comes in handy. This is very similar to the one I had originally and reflects the classic two-tone Parker design, only missing the little silver collar at the tip. It’s light and easy to use, although I really wish they wouldn’t supply the pens with blue ink – it’s a colour I rarely use and most official forms want black. (And it tends to be forms I use ballpoints on.)It was a little scratchy to start with, but soon bedded in and began to write smoothly and precisely.Despite being a medium nib, it isn’t too thick or chunky for my small handwriting. Apart from my personal preference against the colour of the ink, this is a welcome reminder of why Parker has such a longstanding reputation for practical, good quality pens.

This Parker pen is beautifully made and feels both light and very comfortable in my hand. It writes incredibly smoothly with only the slightest pressure required. The attractive Parker pen comes with a medium blue refill and has a top half of what appears to be stainless steel, and a lower plastic grip coloured purple. A classic and well proven design wherein the ballpoint of the pen retracts and releases via a single press to the button at the top.Arriving in an attractive cardboard box, bearing the Parker name and emblem, the pen is immediately presentable as a gift for someone. The reassuring durability of Parker pens and the ready availability of refills being welcome additions. My previousexperience with similar Parker pens of this nature is that they will provide years of constant use if handled with due care. I have no doubt that this will continue to be the case with this Parker Jotter Portobel Purple Chrome Trim Ball Pen.

Why would anyone spend £14.00 (at time of writing) on a biro-type pen? Well, the Parker name has long been a sign of quality, and this pen doesn't disappoint. It's a nice, weighty implement in the hand that just feels like quality. It's well-balanced so writing feels effortless. And the ink flows smoothly without smudging or pooling. It also has an easy-to change ink cartridge so it's reusable, and the nib is retractable by clicking the top. It's not so much that it has special features, it's just much, much better than a cheap biro at doing the same simple tasks. This particular one also happens to be purple (well, the bottom half is) and come in a presentation box but neither of those features matters much to me,though perhaps I would be more keen if I was giving one as a gift. We all use biros every day, it's nice to feel the difference it makes to use a real quality pen.

Just how I remember Parker Pens when I was (much) younger. This is a smart chrome ball point pen with a silvery blue barrel. It looks so smart and is a pleasure to write with; having that slightly chunky feel to the pen that prevents cramping or slipping. It feels familiar and comfortable. The ink on the ball point is royal blue and is even with no unsightly splodges that I have experienced with similar pens. There is a good quality and reassuring click to the top which retracts the ballpoint and ensures no nasty biro stains in bags or pockets ...This is a real classic with above average quality. Splash out and enjoy writing with this smart pen. And infact I have some far pricier pens that aren't nearly as comfortable to write with as this. The pen was delivered very quickly and came in a smart box and outer protective card too.I shall really enjoy writing with this.

The Parker Jotter has survived the test of time. It is a classic writing instrument and deservedly so. It has been some 15 years since I last held one of these and it is the same as I remember.- Smooth writing experience - a cut above a Bic biro- Nice on-off click action- Quite a thin pen to hold - will not suit all as can be uncomfortable for some to hold for extended periods- All metal construction, not half plastic as they used to be- The blue colour is really nice - unisex, I'd sayI've used posher and far more expensive pens but they don't write any better than this. You'll be tied into Parker refills so this is a more expensive way of writing than using standard biros - hard to say if it is more environmentally friendly, depends on the impact of a plastic biro vs metal Parker refill.
