The simplicity and old-fashioned nature of this set is rather endearing. Easy for young kids to understand, it’s nicely set out to give young children an early experience of hands-on crafting and making a mark, if they’re too young to be trying to draw these things properly yet. However it’s not perfect. I agree with review Azem Bici’s comment about the ink pads- while I wouldn’t call them dry, they’re not exactly slopping with ink and you do have to press quite hard onto them to get enough ink to make a good unbroken image when you press it down. The ink pads are a weak point. Also, if I’m quibbling,as a UK parent it’s always a very minor gripe to see yellow school busses and American-style police cars rather than the UK equivalents that our childen will actually see on the roads. It’s nicely presented and looks posh, if you’re thinking of giving it as a gift. Wooden toys generally have the edge over plastic ones in that regard and this is no exception. Once you’ve taken the stamps and the pads out then you’re left with an almost-A4-sized lidless box with a road picture at the back, but there’s no harm in that and it can still be used for different play scenes (albeit fairly small ones) as well. Not amazing, and at the current asking of fifteen quid arguably a little overpriced for what you get, but likely to go down well with three-year-old vehicle obsessives nevertheless.

I'm usually quite impressed with Melissa and Doug toys and this set isn't an exception - the stamps are well made, make clear prints and come in a sturdy wooden tray. You get 8 vehicle themed stamps - plane, tractor, dumper truck, police car, school bus (yellow one), steam train, boat and fire engine. The stamps have nice, big handles, easy for small hands to keep hold of. You also get two ink pads - one red and one blue - make sure these aren't left open as they will dry out.My only quibble is that once you take the cellophane off the stamps and pads they are just kept in plastic moulding in the tray. You know it's just a matter of time before stamps start to disappear and go to wherever all the small parts from various toys disappear to,never to be seen again. (To be fair a lid on the box would probably only delay this problem not stop it.)I love the instructions on the back of the box which explain how you should teach your children to use the stamps - very good hints on getting the most out of them. But ending with "Be sure to talk with kids about only stamping on paper you have given them - never on themselves, furniture, walls etc." Hmmmm.Overall - excellent stamp set that would make a lovely birthday gift.

My young daughter absolutely loves doing any form of arts and crafts- as a keen card maker myself she loves to borrow from my craft stash so I knew she would love to have some stamps of her own. These stamps are very well made and easy for her to handle- creating clear images. My daughter and I especially like the wide range and number of stamps included with this set- 3 princess characters- a castle, horse, wand, carriage, shoe and tiara. Allowing her to create some really pretty pictures. The ink pad has lasted well so far- despite rather a lot of use.We clean the stamps after use with a baby wipe- which we find removes any excess ink- we then allow the stamps to air.I think these stamps will last very well- especially if well looked after and stored in the supplied wooden box. It would have been nice if this had had a lid- to avoid the stamps falling out or becoming dusty- but this is a minor point and overall this is an excellent set- I was so impressed that I have gone on to buy several other Melissa and Doug stamp sets.

Melissa and Doug items are always good quality and usually wooden. This stamp set is no exception. My son is almost 5 and I thought he might like to use the stamps to decorate drawings, cards etc. What he actually did is colour the images in. The stamps are all transport related: fire engine, train etc and are nice and chunky with big handles to aid getting a clear image on the paper. The set comes with two large round stamp pads, one blue and one red.The stamps themselves produce a thin lined image which is nice on its own or can be coloured in between the lines which is what my son did. Either way, what they produce it great. My one quibble is why doesn't this set come with a lid?All that there is to store the stamps and pads is a plastic mould that fits inside the wooden box so once you tell the cellophane off and start using it it's all left open. Not helpful for storage at all, although I think this design is quite typical of Melissa and Doug.Overall, a very good set, although not a cheap do.

What a lovely stamping set this is from the Melissa and Doug range! The stamps have large, easy to use handle sections cut out in the vague shape of the vehicle they stamp, as well as a coloured image of the shape the stamp makes on the handle (this is great for teaching cause and effect, when you can't see exactly what's going to happen). The stamps are a good size, and are nicely made with wooden bases and handles. The stamps are accompanied by a pair of large circular stamping pads in blue and red ink. These work really well and are delightful for preschool up to younger juniors. The whole set is supplied in a natural finish wooden tray, with a base to the inside painted in transport scenes to suit the stamps. It's nice that a storage box is included, but this would have been better (and more environmentally friendly) if there had been a wooden lid - instead the pieces are presented in a moulded plastic tray and shrink wrapped in place.

Great fun surprise for my 4 year old son. He has made some lovely pictures of dinosaurs around a volcano and told stories about what is happening in each picture (and sometimes drawn in Andy from Cbeebies' Dinosaur Adventures too with the pencils that are included in this stamping set). This has been great in helping him create pictures and stories that we can easily talk about with him (he's still not very good at drawing anything recognisable). More versatile than using stickers for creating pictures as you can easily create a herd of 'brother dinosaurs' - LOL - kids are funny. The stamps were of a good size for little hands and were shaped so that it was really easy to use and grip with smallhands.A lot of thought had gone into the design for this set and it's in a lovely wooden box which keeps things together.I'd be happy to give this as a gift as it's so well made and designed to last.

This set of eight wooden stamps are nicely designed, for little hands to hold. The set is aimed at ages 3+ and the eight vehicles included are: a fire engine, a ship, a train, a school bus, a police car, a dump truck, a tractor and a plane. Melissa & Doug are an American company, so some of the vehicles do have a US flavour, but are all quite recognisable to UK children. These stamps have chunky handles, cut in the silhouette of the vehicle painted on them. There are two, large stamp pads – red and blue. Like all Melissa & Doug toys, these come in a large tray and are just let down by the lack of a lid… It would be nice if the tray was a box, which could close, so pieces were not lost. However, these are well made, comfortable for little hands to hold and good quality. Lots of appeal for aiding co-ordination, arts and crafts and imaginative play.

My 8 year old nephew loves them! He's spent hours with it allready making giant dinosaur paintings. The stamps a nicely defined, and the handles sturdy.I wouldn't recommend for really young kids, 4+ seems optimistic, more like 5 or 6 + because you need to apply fairly even pressure to get a good stamp. The box looks nice, but it would definitely benefit from a lid. As it is, you can't really take it along with you on short trips (very important in my eyes). It's just for sitting on a desk. Also the child using it needs to be able to clean them in between use otherwise the ink colours transfer from one pad to the other and turn everything into one shade of dark grey.Overall a good buy,but the few drawbacks stop my from rating 5 stars.

This item is a good collection of stamps if you have a Dinosaur fan. My little one is 2 and he loves stamping away. It is a good creative toy for developing especially for hand and eye coordination. The stamps are small but are very durable. It loses a couple of stars from me because it is such a pain to store. It has to stay flat or the items will fall out of the little wooden box. It would be more convenient if this item had a lid to keep everything secure.I paid just under 10£ for this item which I think is what the product is worth. I definitely would not recommend this item if the price went over 10£. If you can get this on one of Amazon lightening deals then I would purchase.

I really like this stamp set as there is a good selection of animals and it allows the child to make their own composition. What I imagined my daughter would do with it, and what she actually did are two different things. She likes to give herself 'tattoos'. My criticism is mainly that the colouring pencils that come with it are poor quality with not much pigment, so there hardly seems any point including them. There is also no orange to do that tiger with. The box is nice, but you can only use it to store the stamps if you have lots of drawer space and can lay it flat as it has no lid. The ink pad is blue, whereas perhaps it would be better with a blue and a black split pad.

Purchased as a gift for my nephew. Hasn't been used yet but I know he will love it as he loves his other Melissa and Doug stamp sets and he is a big dinosaur fan.The great thing about the stamp sets is that they appeal to such a wide age range and both girls and boys. My 2.5 year old loves stamping with her older cousins. The Melissa and Doug ones are such great quality. The only disappointing thing I find with them though is that they come in a nice wooden box but without a lid so once the cellophane is removed they are just loose in the moulded plastic which sits in the wooden box. It wouldn't stop me purchasing them but would be so much better if the box had a lid.

Like all Melissa and dough products these stamps are well made and easy to use with the stamping pads provided. Like all stamping stes inevitably the pads run dry - especially when you forget to replace the lids, but this isnt the biggest issue. Ive had this problem with other stamping sets - they get a bit mucky and can then mark other stuff so logic would say put back in the box. Great but then there is no lid, so you either have to use something like cling film or a plastice bag and elastic band to keep the stamps in or hope your toddler or child doesnt knock over the stamps when freshly used. Hmm... pity as otherwise really great!

It is really hard to find a kid who doesn't enjoy this lovely set of stamps and crayons. My two kids love using them, and the youngest one has no trouble getting the outline well stamped, since the quality of the ink makes it just right in terms of visibility. You need to wait a couple of seconds before colouring them in in case you want to do that, because otherwise it doesn't have enough time to dry.The kids love putting the stamps back into the box and fitting them all in and my girl sometimes tests her brother on the names of the animals, which is very cute to watch.A very good set which allows for many pleasant activities.

I bought this as a gift, so can't comment on how well the ink pads work, however I had a little look at the set before wrapping it and thought it looked nice. It's a tiny bit smaller than I expected - the stamps are mostly 3.5cm x 5cm pieces of wood, but the wand stamp is smaller at 2cm x 5cm. The whole box was about 20cm x 22cm x 4cm. I've uploaded a photo with a biro in the frame to give an idea of scale. You only get five colouring pencils and there does not appear to be a lid for the box, so you would need to store it flat in a drawer or on a shelf so all the bits don't drop out. A nice product for the price.

My 3-year old loves this set. On the way home from nursery yesterday he specifically asked if the stamping set was ready. My son has been making "sea" pictures and adding kelp forests and seaweed with the pencils. I think that the satisfaction and ease of producing a recognisable image is what makes him so enthusiastic.A nice lot of stamps for variety, and a nice big inky pad. The ink washes off hands easily too which is reassuring. My only grumble, and it is little, is that a sturdy plastic lid would have been handy. As it is there is no lid at all which is a little impractical.
