This magnetic dress-up toy from the Melissa and Doug range makes a refreshing change from many toys of this type, in that it is clearly aimed at BOYS. Billy himself is made out of wood, with a plastic-ey feeling coating over the printed surface which helps to keep this in good condition. He's roughly 1cm deep, so pretty durable, and slots into a blue-coloured wooden base so that he can be made to stand up.The range of outfits provided is really nice and themed to appeal to traditional boy tastes - these include costumes to turn Billy into a knight, a builder and a superhero. The costumes are also quite durable-feeling (roughly 3mm deep) and made out of what looks/feels like it might be MDF. Again, the printed surface is coated, and the clothes have a thin layer of magnetic sheeting on their reverse sides.The toy is presented in a nice, blue-painted wooden box: it's not just for display, you get a decent storage solution to put the toy away. The only slight let-down is the flimsy, thin plastic cover provided - which feels more like the sort of covering you get on ready meals than part of a quality storage box. This is the one component that isn't designed to last. Not worth deducting a star for, as the toy and sorting tray it comes in remain lovely, but one area where the manufacturers could improve on the design: it seems a shame to create such an engaging toy, provide a well-made matching sorting box, and neglect to include an adequate lid to help keep the pieces from getting lost.4.5 stars

Absolutely beautiful dressing up doll set, the quality is what you would expect from Melissa & Doug, very durable and nicely printed images. The box is very sturdy and weighty (If buying as a present ensure the wrapping paper is good quality as the corners kept ripping through my cheap stuff!) with different sections for the items, sadly, as other reviewers have mentioned, there is no lid which as far as I can see is the only fault with this product. If your child is old enough or fastidious enough to put this away properly then this would not be that much of an issue but as my daughter is three and rather wild this is quite the problem and loses it a star unfortunately (I would put it as 4.5 if I could but I just can't round it up to the five).I think it has to be one of my little girls favourite presents however, out of all her gifts this year this has been the one that has been pulled out several times a day since the 25th. The assortment of clothes is fantastic with summer dresses, fur coats, swimsuits and trousers along with little skirts and long skirts and lots of tiny little shoes. I will definitely purchase another of the M&D magnetic dolls in the future, but will be buying a lidded storage box first!

I bought this for my daughter for her fourth birthday and she loves it. It is a beautifully made item of extremely good quality (hence it is quite heavy) with two wooden doll shapes (with underwear already on!) that come with little stands and a load of magnetised items of clothing that you stick on, including little shoes, all presented in a very smart wooden compartmentalised tray. It provides hours of entertainment for little girls.Oh, and it smells lovely - wonderful clean wood smell. I know that sounds a bit perverse but it's true!However, the only fault I can find with this item comes when it needs to be put away. There's no lid!Only a small plastic cover that rests over the middle section containing all the clothes (and even that doesn't fit on securely but literally just "rests" on top). Whoever designed the packaging for this clearly doesn't have children! Small pieces get lost sooooo easily with little ones and I honestly cannot believe that anyone thought it sensible to make a toy like this without a secure lid. It needs a proper hinged lid, and then this toy really would be absolutely perfect.If it wasn't for the lack of lid, I would absolutely not hesitate to give this five stars.

We bought this as a birthday present for our ballet mad 4 year old daughter and it was a big hit!Melissa and Doug specialise in creating 'wholesome' toys which, in a world of endless plastic, flashy lights and tinny music, make a refreshing change. The line between what kids today need/ expect to keep them entertained, and what parents who enjoyed a different kind of childhood would prefer they were interested in, is often a difficult one to tread, but I think they've managed it with this doll! It kept my daughter busy for 30 minutes at a time, and was ideal for that half an hour before dinner's ready when everyone's a bit fractious!As you'd expect, it's well crafted and there is a nice selection of outfits.It's a good price for what you get, and personally I think that it's the sort of thing you could buy a couple of and store away in your 'birthday box' - or at least that's what I call my emergency present stash!I've only given it 4 stars because once the lid is removed you really need to store it in a different box or the pieces go everywhere - it'd be lovely if this came in a special tin and then it'd be perfect for taking with you on car journeys etc.

This was a christmas gift for my three year old daughter and she loves it. Its now halfway through March and its one of her most played with toys. Lots of out fits dress, tops and trousers (I would like a fewer dress and more tops and bottoms but a minor niggle) and loads of shoes, which are a big hit with my daughter.The stand is a bit redundant esp. if the're sitting on the floor playing with it. Major complaint is no lid for the otherwise sturdy wooden compartment "tray" that it comes with it, I think I'd rather have a well built cardboard box.As a side note, if your intending to send it by post as a gift it is quite heavy and I think you'd be better paying for Amazons gift wrap and sendingit that way than paying postage yourself.Overall a great toy and good value for money.

I saw my friend's little girl playing with it and thought it was great. Brought me back to when I was small and used to use the cardboard cut-out version with bend back tabs, I would have loved this one!I bought 3 of them for presents and they all absolutely adored them and got hours of fun with them.Its nice that there is 2 dolls to dress so that they can play with a friend. They are very well made and sturdy. The only thing is that there is no proper lid so the parts need to be stored in a box seperately which is a pity.Also the description on Amazon should include the age suitability as it says on the box 3 years+.One of the children I bought it for is only 2.All in all though its a great product and would highly recommend it.

This toy is really great, the pieces are solid, especially the figures and thier bases. The box they come in is great. The only problem i have with this toy is that there is no lid to the box! It arrived in its own wooden box with different compartments for all the pieces but was simply wrapped with plastic instead of having a lid, so once it was opened there is no way to properly close it. This is a massive design floor for people like me who have three kids aged, 5, 2 and 1. The pieces are constanly being spread around the room! We bought a similar product by melissa and doug with teddy bears which had a fantastic wooden box and lid, why this box didnt have the same i dont know!

I brought this in the sale for my 3 year old. It is a sturdy set and my lad enjoyed playing with it but he did get bored quickly. The set is aesthetically appealing but I was a little disappointed with the quality. The figure does not enjoy being in the stand and it did topple on occasion. Also some of the magnetic pieces didn't fit particularly well - so the whole outfit was slightly big for the figure. There is also limited scope for mixing up the outfits as given the individual shapes, they didn't always fit together. My boy bored of this very quickly unfortunately so does not really play with it anymore. Still, I really do like Melissa and Doug toys and this IS a good toy.

Purchased this toy for my 5 year old grand-daughter who is called ABI and her mummy is called EMMA so although its spelt Abby on the box I'm sure she will love it as she does realise names are spelled differently. It is a Christmas gift but I am confidant it will be well used as she enjoys dressing herself and her many dolls up and as this toy has so many different outfits it should keep her amused for quite a while ( hopefully ). As previous reviews I feel this toy should have a closing lid to keep small pieces together but my DIY mad hubby has already made a lid for it which my grand-daughter can decorate herself. I bought this as a gift and when opening it was disappointed to see it was displayed in an open box although it did have cellophane over it, I though this cheapened it. However the gift was well received and ideal for a small child to play with. I wish the box had a lid as would have meant it was easier to store so that pieces didn't get lost. Great to keep a child entertained and encourage fine motor skills attaching the different outfits to the figure. You could extend it use by encouraging your child to make extra outfits using either paper or material and cutting them out (sorry I work in a Reception so always looking for ways to extend play)

I bought this as present for a 2 year old girl - and was worried when it arrived to see that the packaging says for 3 years and up ( my fault because it does say 36 months in the Amazon product description) , and some of the 'clothes' are quite small - but it has been fine (she shares toys with her 4 year old sister anyway) , with lots of possible permutations to dress up the two figures using good quality wooden clothes with magnetic strips.Strangely, as other reviewers have pointed out, there is no lid to the box and that risks the clothes getting lost - a strange packaging design, but lots of fun for a child to play with

Much sturdier that I'd expected which is ideal for the intended age group. Melissa and Doug are at the top end of what I'm willing to pay for these types of toys but they are very well made and durable. So as usual, you get what you pay for.My only gripe, and I know that many others have pointed it out, is that the box comes shrink wrapped so once it's open there's no lid to keep the contents together.Come on Melissa and Doug, even if you don't think it's necessary you're customers clearly do. Why produce such a lovely product only to hear that people tip them into flimsy containers so that the pieces don't get lost?

I have bought this item 3 times so far from Amazon and not because they've needed replacing, no I have bought them for 3 separate little girls as birthday gifts as they seem to like them so much. One of the girls mummy's told me it was the most played with present she got!It is such a simple idea but is really good fun as they love to dress the ballerina up in different dress. The pieces are very good quality as very thick. The girls were all having their 4th birthday so seems great for around that age bracket.Overall a good toy that makes for a nice gift.

I bought this for my 3yr old's birthday, and it has been a huge hit. It's good quality, there is a fairly wide variety of outfits and shoes, and tbh I think it has value in helping her to understand what type of clothes go together - she's now making those decisions for herself as well as Maggie.The lid (or lack of it) is a minor niggle, as the rest of the box is wooden and it is obviously meant for storage. But easily solved by slipping into a fabric bag if we take it anywhere. And we honestly hadn't noticed the lack of a swimming costume of pyjamas!

My twin boys both seem to enjoy playing with magnetic billy, I think it was well worth the money. They enjoy swapping and changing all of the outfits and mix & matching the different outfits, firemans hat with policeman's uniform etc, they seem to find it very amusing. As other's have said it's a shame it doesn't come with a proper lid as the box itself is lovely. I've taken ours out and put it all in an old biscuit tin so the pieces don't get lost. There's no way you can store it in a toy box and not lose any of the pieces without a proper lid.
