I bought one of these for my two little home-educated relatives, aged 8 and 5. I wouldn't normally have risked instigating World War III in this way, but I figured that, with four projects, two needles and two children with fairly unpredictable levels of enthusiasm, one kit would do for starters. Luckily, they saw the wisdom of my stinginess without realising it for what it actually was.The product is a lovely thing and its brightly coloured packaging immediately captured their interest. The instructions are very clear and the plastic needles, though sturdy enough to do the job properly, are not sharp enough to do any serious damage to either the youngster concerned or any nearby furniture (you can't scratch 'I woz 'ere'into the table top with them for instance...). This is vital if, like me, you're buying this for somebody else's children and if the parents of those children are significantly more intimidating than you are.I made sure I was on hand to help with the various sewing projects - in a purely advisory capacity to begin with, but ready to leap in and show off the quality of my running stitch if the situation became desperate. Tragically, that never happened: the girls mastered each project beautifully, and with a great deal of individuality. The material used for the activities is light but pretty tough and the necessary holes have been pre-cut very well. The five year old grew a bit bored with life in general, and with sewing in particular, towards the end of her work on the notebook cover, but her sister finished the stitches for her without any problems and without feeling the need to involve me. I didn't sulk. I was very good, I didn't sulk.It looks like it might be possible to unpick the stitches and start all over again, although I'm too sure how much punishment those little holes could take. In which case, this is very much a 'one time only' toy. But my two little friends were very excited to be doing a 'grown-up' craft, especially one which resulted in them having four very nice items to then play with. That's the beauty of home education; Kids get to learn about useful, practical things like sewing together their own handbag or crafting their own purse. That's the first step on the road to sewing on their husbands' buttons one day. Sorry - that's an awfully sexist thing for me to have said. Besides, any man worth his salt would be more than happy to sew any replacement buttons on his own frilly blouse, without even thinking of troubling the wife. No? Oh well, that must just be me then.

This kit is at exactly the right level for my six-year-old, who is already eyeing up the sewing machine ambitiously, but still needs to first understand how the simple principles of needles and thread work. The box contains five separately-packaged kits for five items. Each little kit contains several pieces of coloured foam with needleholes already punched into them, two fat pink plastic needles with no sharp points, and thick shoelaces instead of thread. There is a page of stick-on sequins for later decoration, and a page of instructions...... which I admit are just a set of unclear drawings, and parents who are not stitchers themselves may struggle with that. We've done the pink and purple purse (lower-left-hand corner of the picture)so far. I had to stitch on the butterfly decoration, as that's a bit fiddly, and my daughter did the rest under my supervision. It's a smart and functional purse, which she's put all her pocket money into and now takes with her everywhere. She's immensely pleased with her accomplishment, and we will be stitching the other four items over the next four weekends. This is great, and I shall be looking at Galt's other craft kits for children.

My daughter was given this kit for her 3rd birthday and we've just made the first (and simplest) item in the kit - a notepad holder. She really enjoyed it and though I needed to tie the knots for her and give plenty of direction, she was able to do a lot of it herself. I'm very pleased with the kit and my daughter is keen to move onto make the next item (a pencil case) later today. So although it's aimed at 5 years+, younger children can use it too and I'd imagine that an older child could make the items with minimal guidance. In terms of how the kit is put together, the parts of the kit for each individual item (there are 5 things to make - notepad holder, pencil case, picture frame, butterfly bag, neck purse) are bagged seperately, with a couple of needles in each set so you don't need to worry if you lose any along the way. All the foam pieces are pre-cut and the instructions are pictures rather than text.I'll be buying this as a gift for other children in the future.

I have to say, this is fabulous! The quality of the Sewing Kit was excellent & both my Granddaughters loved it, especially my eldest aged 5.. The kit is very easy to use & perfect for teaching Little Ones how to sew.. I love sewing & am always sewing something, so my Granddaughters were very keen to learn with Grandma.. The 'string' for sewing pieces together was very long for the Butterfly Bag in particular but could be cut if required. I left it long, simply because it could be undone easily so they could sew again if they wanted.. Lovely soft foam pieces, that are stiff enough to push needle through but soft enough for little hands.. Really great value for money..

Bought as a gift for my young niece who wanted to learn how to sew. The pack comes with ready cut foam shapes in pretty colours and instructions on how to sew together to make picture frames bags etc. The thread is an easy to use thick quality and the needle is plastic for obvious safety reasons. She thoroughly enjoyed using the kit and it gave her good practice in using needle and thread. She has now moved on to using thick felt and embroidery thread, still using the needle from the kit and is learning more sewing skills while supervised, This is a good starter kit for anyone wanting to learn the basics of sewing.

I put this on my youngest (4yr old) daughter's wish list at Christmas and her Granny bought the gift. It is a great set, with every project separately bagged with its own "thread" and two plastic needles each time, so you can lose quite a few without tears! She made the handbag first with minimal assistance (older sisters untangled thread a couple of times and I did the knots) and enjoys playing with the notepad holder a lot. I think this kit has good starter sewing projects and is a stage easier than the prepunched felt kits available elsewhere, as the thread included is more of a lace and so is easier to handle.

I bought this as a Xmas gift for my 5 year old niece. Although she had many gifts this was the one that caught her eye that she wanted to play with straight away. I bought the gift because my niece needs to practice small motor skills. She found it very tricky initially but with a little guidance she made herself a lovely notebook cover. The praise she got encouraged her to try 2 more in the next day or so which she did all by herself, her confidence now in making herself the kits is wonderful to see, and is at the sometime helping her develop the fine motor skills. Very pleased with this gift!

I bought this little set for my two older grand daughter, aged 5 & 6, with a little help they were able to achieve an item they are really proud of.You don't get much for your money these days, but this little kit contains 5 individually wrapped items, complete with everything you need to make the specific item ie: Child safe sewing needles (plastic with a large eye, so the child can even thread the needle themselves), thread, embellishments etc. I'm sure an older child would love making the items, they could either keep them or even give them as gift.Well worth purchasing.

We have bought this swing set at least 4 times to give to girls aged from 5 - 7 years. It is always a success. My daughter has one too and loves it. She is age 5 and it does require adult assistance to make the items up, but it is a sweet activity to do quietly together on a rainy afternoon, an older child of about 7 or 8 would be able to do this alone I think. The needles are plastic and very child friendly. The completed items are colourful and useable. We have walked round the supermarket a fair few times with the hand bag from this set!

I bought this for my daughter for Christmas, she has a couple of the items made now. I'm not totally sure how much she has made herself, as her father, big brother, big sister and Mum have all done some. However she does like it, they are simple and do seem to stay together. I was concerned before that maybe they would break once sewn with so few stitches, but they do seem to hold. She also like it, it isn't one of the endless unused kits that we seem to have.I would recommend it for beginning sewers, although they will need some help.

Bought this for my 5 year old for Christmas. It's a fantastic activity but it does need an adult to start them off. We used it as a mother and daughter activity to do together, though once she had got the hang of it (on 2nd piece out of 5) she was doing it alone. The instructions are difficult to follow and on 2 occasions I had to unpick what my daughter had just done because I had given her a bum steer! Also the material is a bit flimsy. Having said all that, she thoroughly enjoyed it and I think it was a great present for her age.

My 6 year old grand daughter absolutely loves this and strangely enough her 5 boy cousins age between 5 and 10 were also queing up to have a go. Please can I ask Galt to make one a little less girlie as I would definitely buy these for my grandsons if they were unisex or aimed at boys. I have searched everywhere but can't find one suitable for boys. They don't want pink purses or bags but love the idea of sewing. The days of women only doing sewing have long gone so come on Galt and stop being so sexist.

This sewing set exceeded my expectations. Lovely colours both in the foam and the sewing cord. A huge pink needle was enclosed which was just right for small fingers to thread and sew. The sewing holes lined up perfectly and it was very simple to do so that increased my granddaughters enjoyment because the finished article looked so nice. A good selection of things to sew including a picture frame and notepad holder as well as bags. Great value which will entertain fir some time.

I brought this for my 7yr old granddaughter who said she wanted to learn to sew properly like me, I had a very similar kit as a child and I loved it because I was actually making things. My granddaughter is now getting the same enjoyment from this kit she's already planned who is getting each of her creations as she makes them. Everything you need to make the items on the front is included and the cost of the kit was reasonable, I would definitely recommend it.

I chose this as an introduction to sewing for my granddaughter's 5th birthday. Her mother did not think she should use a proper needle yet, so this kit was ideal as the 'needles' were plastic and the holes ready punched. With help to start and finish the thread, she made a sunglasses case and was very proud of it. I hope this will encourage her to become a skilled needlewoman in the future. The price was good and delivery from Amazon very prompt.
