Melissa & Doug's toys are synonymous with quality, they remind me of the toys of my youth...this was when toys were made with quality materials mostly wood and or metal. These toys sparked the imagination of the child, they weren't electrical and most didn't take batteries...they were just great fun. This Melissa & Doug play set consists of a fifty piece wooden and felt play fruit salad pieces and includes salad greens (kale, lettuce and spinach), proteins (prawns and chicken) plus toppings (olives and croutons). There are also two dressing bottles which actually 'squirt' play string when squeezed. A resueable menu card allows for interactive and imaginative play. Plus the addition of a salad bowl,a wooden knife (to cut the veggies), a cutting board and salad utensils (to toss the salad) make it all that more fun.The pieces are all a decent size and are colourful and very well made...just the thing for young children. We gave this to our granddaughter and she absolutely loves it...she has great imagination and can play for hours with toys of this calibre. The veggies and proteins have cutting sections with self stick tabs that actually make a noticeable crunching sound when being cut. The self stick tabs also allow the child to pick up the pieces of salad, meat and fish using the provided fork.My granddaughter spent a good afternoon making me salads from her salad bar...the only problem was I had to pretend to eat them and make oohing and aahing sounds many, many times.I have no problem in recommending this toy it makes a nice change from the normal modern commercial electric toys. There are quite a few products in this range from Melissa & Doug all which will add that extra playability.

This is really quite a different food preparation play set from the Melissa and Doug range. The set combines painted wooden pieces (the majority of items), natural-looking wooden elements (a salad cutlery set, and chopping board), with plastic and fabric pieces. I think that this is a lovely idea, and my nephews have been playing with the set quite happily. At almost 6 and 8 the boys are on the older side for this set, but with a newly hatched younger sibling this is going to get good use as a family item for a number of years to come.Although this is generally really well made, there are several pieces that aren't designed for longevity. The obvious pieces in this respect are the trio of little plastic salad boxes for the three different types of fabric lettuce leaves. These really do resemble supermarket packaging - unfortunately right down to being thin, lightweight plastic that's not designed to be long-lasting (but won't biodegrade). Even the most careful of playing children may struggle to keep these in good condition for long. The set does also include a large moulded plastic surround tray as part of the disposable packaging - a cardboard box and paper wrapping mightn't have the same display effect, but would cause less lingering environmental problems.I've worked with children for over a decade. We like wooden toys, and have bought several from this brand. Painted pieces like the ones in this set are prone to chipping at the edges if they're knocked about next to one another - which is precisely the action encouraged by the salad bowl mixing design of this set.

I love this good-sized sushi play set from the Melissa and Doug brand. It is, for my money, the best quality sushi play set I have come across. The presentation packaging is also a great-quality wooden storage box with handy and totally authentic-seeming compartments for the play pieces to go in. If ONLY the makers included a lid! Unfortunately, once the shrink-wrap is gone you're left with nothing to keep pieces safely stored once tidy-up time comes around. But this is a small niggle. The Amazon product description seems to have slightly misinterpreted the manufacturer's blurb announcing that the product contains three types of pretend sushi (resulting in a description that confusingly includes rather more!).You DO get three types of brightly-coloured wooden sushi: pretend nigiri, maki, and California rolls. The nigiri have different toppings on them (prawn, tuna, omelette), and on the tuna and omelette variants there is a pretend strip of nori seaweed in the form of a piece of ribbon. although the range of pieces and build quality of these are second-to-none, this isn't the most realistic-looking sushi set available. With its blocky wooden build (both maki and California rolls are cuboid, instead of cylindrical) and brightly stark colours, this lacks the verisimilitude of plastic sets BUT is better presented, better made, and easier for young children to use as rounded plastic pieces are slippery and very difficult indeed for youngsters to pick up using (plastic, splinter-free, Health and Safety-satisfying) chopsticks.

This is a really great set, nicely combining felt, wood and plastic to produce a perfect combination of play food and cooking items. The wooden items have no rough edges, which is a perennial gripe of mine about Melissa & Doug products, and look well turned and painted. The plastic is sturdy and good quality. The felt, while rather rough to the touch, is well stitched and nicely coloured.Pros: a lovely set which encourages imaginative play. all items are well made and this set can be added to others, for example the condiments set, pizza set, coffee brew and serve etc. The box can be used as a cooking surface and sink, though my little one prefers to pretend this so she can set up wherever she wants.Cons: The pasta boxes we have found a little tough to get into and they make storing this set a little difficult. Nice tough ziplock pasta packets would have been better. They remember the cheese, but where is the pepper? The one in the condiments set is a shaker only. A cool little pepper grinder would have been fun. Why is there only one bowl and fork? the velcro fork in particular is a lovely touch. two of each item would encourage sharing instead of having to use other mismatching items.Overall a hit with my little girl and we would thoroughly recommend to anyone.

Without a doubt, this is one of the best play food sets I have ever seen. We have had sooo much fun playing with this. It's a fantastic alternative healthy wooden playfood set and the attention to detail of every product included is utterly brilliant. There is a chopping board and chef's knife. A wipe-able menu board. A salad bowl and salad spoon and fork. A fork which really picks up the salad thanks to the velcro sides. A jar of olives that opens. A real cardboard box to put the croutons in. Carrots, cucumber, pepper, mushrooms, tomatoes and prawns and steak. All of which have velcro so they can be stuck together and 'cut' apart with the knife. Three packets of kale, lettuce and spinach which are adorable soft felt fabric and look like the real thing. Plus the extraordinary sauce bottles which are so clever, I've included a little video so you can see how they work. There is a rope inside attached to a weight so when you flip the lid and tilt the bottle the rope pops out. Genius! And all this with no batteries involved. The packaging was a little excessive but over all the set is amazing. Would be perfect for a school or nursery setting too to encourage role play. Definitely recommended.

Not only is this a really fun set, but it also helps to encourage healthy eating. There is a list of suggested salads, plus a checklist of ingredients. You have a mixing bowl, pretend ingredients, a cutting board and knife, salad spoon and fork and all your child needs is lots of imagination for pretend fun.Yes, some of the vegetables – such as the pretend lettuce – is felt and may not last forever, but they are pretty durable. The sauce bottles even have a coloured string, which pops out when you tip them, so it looks as though they are pouring. Many of the vegetables, and other ingredients (such as the piece of grilled chicken) can be cut with the knife; making a satisfying sound as they pop apart. All in all, this is an unusual set. You do not usually get a child’s play food set which includes kale and olives, but, really, why not? Children are more likely to try food they help prepare, or are familiar with, and this set helps them practice those skills and see that healthy eating is lots of fun.

Love these, bought as additions to a kitchen for a nearly three-year-old boy.Great selection of 10 cans - three fruits, four vegetables, tuna, soup, tomato sauce - a great mixture to allow play meals of various sorts and imaginative cooking. The labels are realistic, the different sizes stack quite well, lids are easily removed by small fingers. The material is fairly durable (unless stood on of course), and they fit into a toy kitchen and make it look like a real one for kids.I like these, my son likes them, he's asked me to read the labels but now recognises the pictures of course and is starting to recognise individual letters on them.Good quality and well made.

There is nothing my 7 year old granddaughters like better than preparing pretend food, and this set is a million times better than those plastic ones you buy; a lot of the pieces are made of wood; they are chunky and realistic. It's excellent value; there are 52 pieces, including vegetables in pieces with Velcro,so you can cut them with a wooden knife provided, and it makes a proper "cutting" sound, dressing bottles with string that comes out when you tip them up,bowls and plastic containers for the felt"salad leaves" and wooden utensils to toss the salad. It all comes in a nice strong cardboard box to pack everything away;fantastic!

If you are looking for play tinned items for your little ones pretend play, look no further and simply buy these.I looked around all the shops in my local town for pretend items for our play shop that wasn't that flimsy cardboard that goes flat as soon as you put any wait on it but had no luck.I then came across these and I had to buy. They are so much better than expected. They are a hard durable cardboard that would need a lot of weight or pressure to ruin their shape. The lids are made of plastic with their logo on.For the price I paid I would highly recommend. One pleased mum over here.5*!

Grandchildren of seven, five and one all joined in playing with this good quality set of wooden and plastic toys. With children being educated about sensible food choices, the slice and toss play food set is a lesson as well as a toy. This would go well with a toy kitchen, other Melissa and Doug food sets. A lot of thought has gone into designing this collection and I can recommend it highly. Would be great for a preschool class, a playgroup. The sad dressing bottles are really fun to use with their 'stream' of dressing - string! 52 pieces make for a generous and interesting salad set.

These are really good quality. I was a little surprised as I purchased to go with a GLTC toy shop and had bought mainly wooden food to go with it, these were the first plastic items I bought and did not have great expectations. How wrong was I. The items are plastic, with paper/card body labels, but they are very well made and look the part. The lids come off, and as the product description explains, and can be used to keep items in them. The 'cans' are easily identifiable for a 3 year old and really assist with role-play. They look great as part of a toy shop, and I would recommend.

Received them today. I bought them for my 13 month old son because when I am cooking, he always wants to steal my supplies! He has been playing with them non-stop for the past 3 hours!! He is so excited that he screams with joy everytime he manages to open the lids! I've put several items in each one of them for him to find. Smaller toys, raisins, dummies e.t.c. I think it is a really nice toy and you can do many fun things with it. The colours are vivid and it seems like it's gonna last. The lids are easy to open and close. I totally recommend it for many hours of fun!

These pretend play tins look great. Bought them for daughters Christmas so can’t comment on durability yet but as far as I can see they look pretty sturdy and doug and Melissa food containers have been the best I have seen. I’ve shopped around and every other brand and style I have found have been minuscule little tins and boxes that don’t look durable or worth the money. I’d definitely recommend paying a little extra for the doug and Melissa brand. I bought the grocery basket too. It’s good that the lids come off the tins making for more pretend play fun!

Was a little unsure when ordering as it seemed expensive for play food but this set is amazing. We bought it along with the pasta set for a birthday gift and our daughter loves making us salad and pasta dishes and it encourages healthy eating. The quality is first class and the recipe card is a great addition and we love following this and making up our own salads. The bottles have cord in them that make it look like you are pouring! My little girl loves this and at the age of two is now telling me she wants mayonnaise with everything!

My daughter received these as a gift for her second birthday and they are lovely, bright and well designed. But unfortunately after just 2days of play they were chipping flakes of paint away. Not ideal for a kids toy which obviously takes some hammering. She also received other m&d wooden food, the food groups one, and they don't seem to have damaged at all?She does love the food items and enjoys role play with them, but I now obviously need to keep an eye on them to watch for more paint damage which could result in harm.
