This is a fun, well-made first piano for your budding pianist, it's got proper keys that span two whole octaves and comes with a music book with basic nursery rhymes. It sounds like a honky-tonk piano (I think the key hammers are hitting a large on-end xylophone inside the casing rather than it being strings like a real piano), so don't expect it to sound like a full-size piano that an adult would play, but it's perfectly good enough for the average child to get a lot of noisy enjoyment from. The design is really smart, it's wooden, with an upright design so your little one can sit cross-legged in front of it and it is the correct height to play comfortably. The keys are a good size so even an adult can play it without problems. The product description says that it's suitable for 3+ years but with supervision I've given this to my son who isn't even two years old yet, and he's already happily pressing the keys individually and listening for how they differ to each other, so I think there's a lot of educational value even for younger children. An excellent toy which, who knows, could lead your child down a musical path. 5 stars.Edited to add: the guide bar with the notes printed on it is a piece of cardboard, which is only attached with a bit of double-sided tape at each end. It flops forward in the middle and my son immediately wanted to get his fingers behind it and pull it off. I carefully pulled one end off and then added extra loops of folded over sellotape all along the length of the cardboard and then stuck it back down so it didn't sag. This seems to have fixed the problem, but on an otherwise excellent quality toy, this is a silly design and needs to be recified by the manufacturers.

After more than 35 years of trying, this is the most successful toy I have ever bought for a small child! My 18-month-old grandson had already shown a fair degree of interest in an ancient one-octave device which his mother had re-discovered in the loft of her childhood home, and the Melissa & Doug device has become his favourite toy. He enjoys playing his own sequences of notes, and he pays close attention when adults pick out some of his favourite tunes. He enjoys climbing all over the toy and likes to sit on it while watching TV. His 3-year-old cousin also loves it, and tries to play with both hands at the same time.I have just ordered the Melissa & Doug mini grand piano because it seems a natural progression at a very fair price - I shall hide it away until they start to get bored with the one they already have. Some reviewers have mentioned that the toy is not in perfect tune and that it doesn't sound like a real piano but I think they are missing the point. It's good enough for a toddler's ear and, above all, it produces sound mechanically (which is infinitely more interesting to the same toddler's ear than the monotonous electronic bleeping which they hear everywhere). SOLID WOOD===========It's a very brightly coloured child's toy piano. If you think it'll sound like a real piano... hmmmn think again. However, It sounds very good for a toy piano, but it definitely sounds like a toy piano. It's a superb toy piano but if you want a real piano sound- you'll need to pay real piano prices.AGE===It's the size that a child would play on from the floor. I'd say as soon as they can sit up- this will be fine.TOY====It doesn't sound like a real piano, but it doesn't sound awful. However with any noise making toy it can irritate after a while, as it hasn't got a volume button.Overall, kids will love it because of its noisiness and it's well made.I suppose it may encourage toddlers to develop an interest in music.A good toy but perhaps describing it as a learn to play piano is a little over optimistic.

This is a brilliant little piano for small children to learn the basic classic rhymes. You have a little book with colours and the key letters to help go through the rhymes. If you have someone in the family who can actually play the piano then you'll be able to teach your little one a few extra rhymes. The piano is wooden and has musical note patterns on the side. It feels really sturdy too. It is wrapped in plastic when it arrives so comes in a huge amazon box which is the right size for protection and then looks shrink wrapped.I am amazed with this little piano for the price because it feels good and looks good - not like a cheap plastic version which I know you can get. This looks more classical and is definitely one to keep in the loft to hand down.

I really rate Melissa & Douglas toys and this is no exception. It comes ready built and the construction is top notch. The use of good quality materials really shines through and makes it a robust toy . It's brightly coloured and they keys work well. You get a songbook and the piano is the perfect size for a toddler. A lot is made that it is tuned like a relief piano. Although not as good sounding as a new piano it works very well and my little one enjoys it immensely. The coloured strip above the keys helps with matching up the keys to the song book. This is a great toy and one that could easily get a child enthusiastic about learning music. It's been a massive hit with us.

Bright and sturdy toy, just as you'd expect from a Melissa & Doug product. There is a booklet in the box which has instructions to play common child songs, like Old McDonald had a farm, etc.. The booklet is easy to follow for even 2yr olds, so they can play a recognizable (yay) tune. It is also good size for 2-6 year olds to play sitting or kneeling down. No stool required. After a while (with the aid of some beating from a child perhaps) some notes can go out of tune and sound terrible when their keys are pushed down. Simply unscrew the two top screws (you will need a standard 4-5 allen key), remove the top and tighten the 2 internal screws. Hope this helps :)

This is a fantastic first piano for toddlers. It's robust and has colour-coded keys as well as a music book. There's a children's film with an instrumental which sounds identical to the tone of this piano, so the kids love to try and imitate the TV with this piano. The tone is similar to a xylophone/ old style honky tonk.We love it because there are no batteries involved, you can play as many notes as you like simultaneously, it's tuned to the same pitch as a proper piano (i.e. c= c) etc and it's the right height for the little ones to play on without supervision.Well done Melissa and Doug!

Melissa and Doug have a very high reputation in child development products. This is a well made, two octave piano (with major and minor keys) which has quite a high register -sounds more like a harpsichord than a piano. But it works very well, and comes with a full learn to play tuition guide and keyboard note layout template. This is fantastic and though our four year old is not up to the Moonlight Sonata or Mack the Knife just yet, he loves this as much as he did an older version that he had. Start 'em young - good practice for parents too.

This is just gorgeous! As with all Melissa & Doug toys it's extremely well made (predominantly of wood) and brightly coloured. It IS small however, to the point I don't think a child could comfortably sit at it - they'd probably need to kneel at it to be the right height.Included is a songbook and colour-coded key chart. The notes are written behind the keys although given that this is just a toy, and not meant to be a "starter piano" , it does seem a bit overly helpful!

Really fun intro into this lovely instrument. My young children had some serious fun on it, but as you can imagine the racket was considerable. Its well made, although as others have mentioned things like the cardboard notes card haven't been put on very well. Overall however this is fun, robust and I look forward to playing some tunes with my children on this.

I gave this to my twins for Christmas when they were about 14 months old. It was an instant hit and they still play it very often. It's holding up great despite lot's of "bum piano playing" which they do whenever I turn my back. I find the sound cute and the notes generally in-tune-sounding, though I certainly don't have perfect pitch.

Great product delivers on both quality and entertainment. my daughter loves it, and all the kids who come to the house loves it even the adults. Price less for the little joy it brings. The seller is also great. I had to return the 1st unit due to a minor fault I received the replacement before I could pack my unit.

Bought this for our 1½ yr old at Christmas. She absolutely loves it. The song book is very helpful as well, and although she can't read, the colour code is easy to follow. My only negative, which I've noticed on a few reviews, is that the strip along the keys is poorly attached and is very flimsy.

Completely brilliant. Bought for my 12 month old it is solidly built, very well finished and sounds pleasant enough under toddler fingers. It does, of course, depend on how delicate or wild your little one is but this is such a great product

Both my 1yo and my nearly 4yo love playing with this :) it's really great to look at and seems a great first piano. The only thing is it does sound a little clangy but for the money we're really pleased with it!
