Mech Assault is the latest in the long running series of Mech games that have, until now, been PC exclusive. This latest offering is the first console entry to the series, and trades the accurate simulation of the PC games in exchange for all out blasting action.Aesthetically, things are brilliant, as the game makes good use of the Xbox’s power. Buildings and Mechs are well detailed, and combat is a shower of lovely particle effects. Particularly outstanding are damage effects. Mechs limp and smoulder, buildings burn beautifully and explosions are truly incredible. Mechs detonate in enormous pyrotechnical displays and buildings crumble and collapse into huge clouds of dust, like watching a block of flats being demolished. Fighting in cities is intense, as just about everything is destructible. It is truly satisfying to take down a Mech and watch the explosion bring down skyscrapers all around it, or to collapse a bridge when a particularly tough enemy is going across it, taking him out as well. This detail adds significantly to the gaming experience. The gaming experience benefits from its PC pedigree, and there is a little more depth than most of the competition. Each Mech has its own advantages and disadvantages. Smaller Mechs are harder targets and much speedier, as well as usually having bonuses such as invisibility or jet-boosters. Larger Mechs absorb more damage, but they need to as they are slow-moving and rarely have bonuses. Needless to say they pack some series firepower. The choice of which Mech to use is always crucial to the mission. An additional gimmick is the “overheating” concept. The more you fire your weapons, the hotter you get, and if you max-out you can no longer fire your weapons. Different weapons overheat different amounts, so you always have to watch what weapon you are using. These tactical decisions help add depth to the game. The single player campaign is, unfortunately, too generic to really engage. The plotline isn’t particularly award winning, and the game is the usual routine of taking on worse odds and unlocking tougher Mechs with each mission. The usual female commentator gives reason to your rampages, but the storyline never affects gameplay any more than defining what particular target you are aiming for.Where the game really shines is in multi-player. The game modes are the usual deathmatch and tag variants, although the “Grinder” mode is an engaging distraction. Basically you, and an optional friend, have to last as long as possible against increasingly tough enemies. It is great fun, and the deathmatch modes are also great, particularly if the number of players is high enough. If you are lucky enough to have broadband (Xbox Live) than this game is downright essential.Overall I would definitely recommend this game to anyone who regularly plays with friends. The whole experience is very “WOW” inducing, and this is a game to play if you want to impress rival console-owners. If you don’t often play multi-player then you can probably find better, although fans of the genre will probably love the single player.

If you like blowing stuff up, with a storyline to go with it this game is for you.The graphics are something special, be it the dust from the building you've just destroyed, to the electrical weapons being fired from your mech they all look stunning. In the story mode, you progress through missions, with specific targets to take out. These can be infantry (Stamp on them!), buildings or other mechs. As you progress through the game, the targets get more difficult to hit, and the opposition force becomes stronger. From mission to mission you can choose the mech you think will be the best for the job. You start with one mech at the beginning, and as the game progresses more become available to you.The new mechs are generally bigger, or better, and each has it's strengths and weaknesses. In multiplayer mode this game gets even better. I am lucky enough to be an Xbox live beta tester, and so am able to play over the service. I'm not very good, and keep getting beaten by the americans that I'm up against, but it's fun none the less. Especially with the voice communicator to shout instructions to team mates or threats to opponents!I only gave this game four stars rather than five, because I feel that they could have added more game types to the multiplayer mode, but this is a good game, and woth getting.

This game is outstanding. Graphics and sound are top notch and really show off the power of the xbox ( I cant imagine this game is possible on a PS2 its exclusive anyway ). Gameplay is varied and really draws you in. Missions are challenging the city scapes are big and everything can be destroyed even icy levels have masses of destructive bits. Destroying enemy mechs is tough almost like boss battles and great fun. Its not that difficult to target other mechs or enemies with the simple interface and lock-on system. Weapons vary mech to mech but you only have three offensive weapons and one defensive. I cant wait to get this on xbox live and go mech to mech. The mech models are all different with different abilities but its by no means complex just pure shooting fun. Worth evey penny get xbox live too and you may never leave your home again.

after giving up waiting for Unreal or splintercell to be released i decided to buy mechassault. being a fan of the games on the P.C I loaded it up to see that all the mechs are there, unfortunatley there is no FPS view and you can't change the view at all but that aside you can level all buildings in view and the graphics of this is outstanding. the gameplay is very good with a good learning curve, sounds not that great but multiplayer options are plenty and the chance to download new mechs and maps I can't wait. Bring on my broadband connection for sheer fun

an easy game to play, with good graphics, as you work your way around the levels, it does get a little harder. A good blow up game, you just go round blowing things up, the first level is just the basic getting used to the joy pad, with some help on what does what and where, you really don't need to look at the manual all the help is on screen, its a great game for kids and adults, who are learning the console or just want an quick easy game to kill time, or even to relax after a hard day, just go and blow things up.it can be addictive!

Mech Assault was one of the first XBOX Live titles to appear on the shelves that offered a superb if not a little to quick to complete offline game scenerio and then with LIVE capabilities thrown inI have been an XBOX Live user for like forever in the UK and this game still gets the pulse racing, its quick arcade appeal is superb, the game modes just as good and nothing better than a rumble in a huge whopping Mech.If you do not own this game - then you should order now now now.

I haven't played this game yet, i didn't get it to play the game, I got it so I could run Linux on my X-Brick. The reasons for this are many in number, but if you have ever used a Windows PC, you'll want to stick it to Gates aswell. Using this game, an action replay and an internet connection, you can run a special linux variant on your 'box. I suggest you try this, you won't regret it!I'm sure the game is very good too...

Well, if the Xbox hasnt already got enough decent games to boast about, this one is a fine example. Simple, fun, explosive, exciting and about 100 tons of steel and power best describes this. Easy controls, great graphics and a 100% destructable terrain, this has to be the best robot fighter on the Xbox. Buy it now!

Missions on this game make it easily accessible, you can apportion time and not feel like it is wasted - it's not uncommon after all for a computer to be busy processing with all it's got, or a tv programme coming on soon hasn't started yet - good to pick up and play when the mind wants that gap filled.

This game really is a plesant surprise - very easy to learn the controls and within half an hour you're destroying other mechs! The split screen is ok but not the best, system link is great fun and potentially this will be good on xbox live too. Definitely recomend this one.
