♦ Brief ♦The F.R.E.Q.4D headset by Mad Catz is a very unique looking headset. It has a very angular shaped design around the majority of the headset, mainly around its earcups. The headset itself seems pretty solidly made, though are rather bulky in size and a bit weighty also. However, in my experience, the weight has not hindered the comfort these headset provide. The cushions on the earcups are very soft, this combined with these being over-ear does make them pretty comfortable.♦ Box Contents ♦F.R.E.Q.4D Headset | USB Cable* | Aux Cable* | Mad Catz Stickers | Instruction Manual.*Other end of cable is a mini-USB connection, this end slots into the headset.♦ Sound via AUX cable (Smartphone)♦When using the AUX cable, the equalizer & Viva Touch 4D sound features will not work. This cable has an in-line volume slider and answer call button,The sound quality is slightly above average, but I wouldn't say it will blow your mind. Vocals & instrumentals seem very clear and they can deliver a slight bit of bass too.♦ Sound via USB cable (PC) ♦When you connect this headset to your PC, your computer should automatically sort the drivers out, this is what happened to me. During this process I had no issues or crashes, once it's sorted (took barely 15 seconds for me), you're all good to go.The 4D sound is enabled by default, though can be deactivated by clicking the button on the headset with a fingerprint icon on it. Though I've got to be honest, I rarely deactivate this setting as I'm a big fan of it.When I'm playing a rather bass heavy song on my smartphone, whilst it can deliver some bass, it can struggle at timesSo what does 4D sound do? It completely enhances the bass in audio which gives off quite a bit of vibration too, so you can feel more immersed with the audio. You also an equalizer button to which you can skip through three different modes: Game, Music or Voice.I think the sound quality is at its best when used on a PC with the supplied USB cable. As for the mic quality, seemed really clear to me, perfect for chatting with friends online.♦ Final Opinion ♦The design of this headset is definitely appealing (though you wont find me wearing them outside) and can deliver nice clear sound. It's compatible with a fair amount of devices such as a PC, Mac or other smart devices making it rather versatile, however the strengths in sound quality does rely on it being connected to a PC or Mac.I think the 4D sound is a key feature to buy this headset, but I can imagine some people may not like it.✔ Pros:✓ Look cool.✓ Comfy to wear.✓ 4D sound feature.✓ Can be used on a variety of devices.✖ Cons:✘ Bulky & Weighty.✘ Average sound quality when used on smartphone.

Sound wise these headphones are very solid. Without the vibration feature on the sound is clear, but the built in graphic equalizers seem to have only 3 settings: tinny beyond use, normal, and bassy. It reminds me of the old "Bassboost" buttons except this one comes with a rubbish tiny button built in. When I switch the vibration feature on however, I get the sensation of that nice deep bass, that lovely vibration in your ear, without the high levels of noise. However I felt that listening to music this way feels a bit gimmicky and the vibration gave no added benefit, other than saving my ears from sure deafness. However I loaded up my trusty game "World of Tanks" and fired a 152mm gun.BOOOOOOOOM..... and after the sound had died away beyond what I could hear, my ears were still vibrating from the underlying bass notes, from the deep rich boom. It completely added a feature I was not expecting. The vibration of the head from the deep rumbles of the engine add an extra dimension to the game as well, making a bigger vibration as the tank moves along, dying down as it comes to rest, giving a real sense of being in the game.As to the appearance of the headset, I find that for the price it looks cheap and tacky and I wish these were more adult orientated in appearance, rather than clearly just trying to appeal to the youth market. They perform well, if you can put up with a pair of headphones which look like they have unnecessary plastic bits sticking out on them, like the nemesis ride at Alton Towers has unnecessary wires sticking out of the walls of the queue walk through, just for the sake of it, then these headphones will sit well on you. It's only the poor tacky design which has made me mark it down by 1 star. Even with that said they feel solidly built, despite the plastic look, so I guess that it's each to their own with aesthetics, but for me I wouldn't want to use these outside of the home. I get the feeling that companies forget that not all gamers are 15 years old and that maybe the older gamer would like something that reflects its price. In summary, the sound is good and the vibration feature adds an immersive sensation to the game. A great headset that has replaced my older set of logitechs now. Onward to better and brighter things, please Madcatz perhaps use the technology in another style of headphones with more adult appeal and I've got myself a great pair I'd use anywhere.

These are a very sturdy feeling set of headphones. The cable is pleasingly thick and solid feeling, and connects into the headset via a micro-usb connection on the headset. There a 2 cables included, 1 for using with your phone and 1 for using with your PC. The phone cable allows you to answer the phone, but reduces the functionality of the unit to just a plain headset with microphone.Note that the microphone isn't on a boom that goes out in front of you, but is integrated into a bump on the front of the left earpiece. This seems to work fine when used in normal conditions, but not sure how it would react to a noisy background or wind. The base sounds nice, and the treble is clear and bright. It sounds very nice compared to my old headphones when playing music. The gaming side of it is pretty good as well, it giving you a good all round experience. In the shoot-em-up games I could detect people quick easily and work out where they were, and the other games gave a nice immersive experience. The 4D sound bit is a little bit of a gimmick to be honest. There must be little motors inside the headset that vibrate it slightly when the headset is putting out a solid base note. This works ok most of the time, but I am not sure it adds anything to the experience. Not that this only works when it is connected to your PC, and does not work when you have it connected to your phone. The one major drawback is the weight. These things are noticeably heavier than any headphones I have used in the past but they are solidly built so I imagine this will help them last.

I've really enjoyed using these phones. They are a comfortable fit for my rather large (7 3/4) head and I am happy to use these for a couple of hours at a time, essential for serious gaming. The built in microphone is also an excellent feature - doing away with the mike boom makes for a neater unit, and the quality is very good compared with my other "boom" headset. The ViviTouch bass enhancement also works really well for me - I note that some reviewers have found it "buzzy", but that's not been my experience. It makes for a more realistic gaming atmosphere. (Note this only works when using the USB lead - which is 2metres long, great for PC use.A single audio jack lead for mobile devices is also supplied.)Sound quality - I'm very happy to listen to music through these too. My HD 598 Sennheiser are better here, with crisper reproduction - but they are more expensive, and don't perform as well for gaming. I tend to keep the Catz's on for music now rather than switch across - sheer laziness, but it's a tribute to the quality of these headphones.Recommended.(Just an update from November 2017 - rather sadly, the headset broke today - the plastic top section sheered. Still, they have had three and a half years of pretty much daily use, so I'm not reducing the star rating.)

Very good, the 4D is a plus if you listen to a lot of bass (DnB, Trap, Dubstep etc), the microphone works really good ( no one complained on Curse/Skype when I talked over). I actually enjoyed the 4D feature on movies as well, it gives you that cinema boost from everywhere. The only issue I had with it its that first time when I plugged them on the PC I didn't get almost no bass on it, I had the 4D working but there was no bass from the speakers. I searched on the internet and I found out that you should just uninstall the headset from Device Manager, then restart the PC and then plug the headphones again. Windows ( Win 10 in my case) installed the driver automatically and now I have one of the best BASS+ experience at a bargain of the price.Plus, you have to admit it, the headset looks pretty cool. Oh yeah, it is a bit heavy, but you get used to it, plus the materials seem of a very good quality.Game ON!!!

I got a bit carried away writing a long review but this is the summary:The Vivitouch 4D effect is suprisingly good, making the headphones enjoyable to use for games and anything else with bass. Remember that although analogue connector is included, you need to use USB for 4D effects. Mic works well even though it doesn't stick out. The headphones are a bit rigid and plasticky, but fit me fine and were quite comfortable.-------When I saw the FREQ 4Ds available through the Vine programme I requested them, but with a decent amount of scepticism because to my mind the MadCatz brand doesn't really scream quality. Plus I already have a set of the excellent

Bought these for my son, I don't think he's taken them off his head since. He wanted them for gaming and they seem to do the job ok.
