With the sad demise of my DV9880 (graphics malfunction and meltdown), I was in the market for another laptop. Key features for me were a 17.3" screen, speed and storage capacity. I settled on the HP cd0033na not only because of the reviews posted on other web sites but it met my criteria. It is difficult to categorise the HP cd0033na. It isn't part of HP's premium Omen gaming range so I would like to think this is HP's office/gaming hybrid option. Considering the components, this is by no means a cheap laptop. Armed with an Intel i7 processor, 8 GB of RAM, a dedicated 6GB NVidia graphics card (and there's an Intel one too which I touch upon later),512 SSD and 1TB hard drive this laptop makes its credentials known. The first thing I noticed about the laptop was its weight and form factor. It was much lighter, slimmer and smaller than my old laptop. There are plenty of ports including 3 USB ports (3.1 spec), 1 USB-C, 1 RJ-45 (Ethernet connection), 1 HDMI, a SD card reader, power input and a 3.5mm combined microphone/headphone socket. There is no optical drive so if this is a must, you'll need to buy an external drive or look at other laptops. There is also the webcam at the top of the screen. The HP logo is a strange, metallic green colour fitting in with the theme of the keyboard. The black/grey matt finish looks good especially when you open the lid to see the backlit green keyboard. The lid felt a tad flimsy but hardly flexed. The green backlit keyboard looks good but it's a matter of personal preference. From what I could deduce I haven’t found a way to change the colour. The keyboard has a light touch feel to it. I hope it can endure my somewhat forceful key presses. The mouse pad combines the traditional left/right click buttons into the pad. It didn't take much time getting used to it.The screen itself is a 17.3" non-glare matt finish screen so I'm grateful there are no reflections. Colour reproduction is beautiful and razor sharp despite a maximum refresh rate of 75khz. At first, I initially thought the colours looked oversaturated until I used my own photographs that looked bland and they did look bland on the screen so the monitor was working properly!Bloatware - there wasn't much which can be easily uninstalled. The HP stuff I actually found to be quite useful (first time ever). I removed McAfee software as I already have AVG Ultimate which covers unlimited devices for 2 years. When you use the laptop for the first time, the laptop goes through the normal set-up routine of 'use Cortana' etc. It was a mercifully quick process.Performance - boot up and shut down time - fast. Within 10 seconds, the desktop appeared. This is possible with the 512GB SSD hosting the operating system. I installed Office 2013 on the SSD and responsive was quick. There is a 1TB 7200rpm hard drive for additional storage which seems really slow when compared to the SSD. The USB ports put my old laptop to shame - 190mb/s compared to 20mb/s on my old laptop. I played Armada 2 which is a really old game that struggled on the DV9880 as the fans kicked in and task manager showed how much punishment the game was heaping on the laptop. On the new HP laptop, I couldn't hear any fans and CPU use was next to nothing. I installed Sims 4 which is well known for being a memory hog and CPU killer. I did notice the fans did kick in and a bit more CPU power was being used but it played beautifully. Videos looked glorious on the screen with no stutter. I did notice there was none of this 'black out' nonsense that I had encountered with the old laptop when viewing graphics and videos on the web.The interesting bit about this laptop is a two graphic card set-up - the Intel UHD Graphics 630UHD card for general stuff such as browsing (2GB) and the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Graphics Max-Q (6 GB GDDR6 dedicated) graphics card. That's 8GB in total but I don't know if these work in conjunction with each other or they pass on graphics duties between themselves. I'm not sure how the laptop knows when more graphics processing power is required but it is reassuring to know this laptop can handle it.Sound quality - most laptop speakers are appalling. The speakers have been tuned in collaboration with B&O. The sound quality is better than most laptops being fine for casual listening but I normally use headphones or external speakers.Webcam quality - the webcam is extremely clear in good lit conditions but it struggled in low light. The microphone quality isn't bad but serviceable. Not really too bothered as I don't use webcams as I use my smartphone for that.Upgrade options - you can upgrade the SSD and HDD. There are two RAM slots with a 4GB RAM chip in each slot but you can potentially upgrade this to 32GB with two 16GB chips but HP have not indicated whether the motherboard will accept more memory which is a shame.Upon conclusion, the HP cd0033na is a great laptop. Blistering performance in terms of speed and game play. It has enough connectivity to satisfy most users. The keyboard and mouse pad are a delight to use. I certainly don't miss an optical drive but you can always buy an external unit. All in all, this HP laptop is worth considering if you're thinking about purchasing a laptop that can handle work, browsing and some gaming.Update (15-12-2019) - have successfully installed 32GB of RAM. This laptop was very quick with 8GB but now, this laptop laughs at anything I can chuck at it.

I was interested to try the latest HP Pavilion gaming laptop, called the cd0033na. I've been an Alienware fan until Dell started to remove the upgradability of them, consequently my 17 R1 and m17x r4 are now showing their age, largely because of their original graphics cards are struggling with the latest games. Yes, I know I can upgrade them.Let's get the small niggles out of the way first:- It is plastic, as soon as you open the lid you realise we are not talking the pinnacle of gaming laptops. Whereas Alienware's are strong, solid lids, this HP you can open with one hand but you can feel the bend in the plastic. Anyway, the advantage is it's easy to open.- The touchpad is button-less.I totally get that this is personal preference but I hate buttonless pads because, in my experience they sometimes mis-behave: you press for a left click and then get a right-click menu appear. Irritating and the same issue here. Although when playing games, you are going to have a mouse/controller to use so shouldn't need the touchpad.- The keyboard. Different manufacturers have different layouts but the "same height as the other keys" enter key is irritating, I guess I'll get used to it. The arrow keys are also a bit odd, up and down are squashed to half the height of the other keys but the left/right are now,- On/off switch is a little let down. Just a small clicky bit of plastic to the top left. Yes I know this is splitting hairs....Niggles out of the way, and they are niggles, let's get on to the good stuff. The design is clearly on the gaming map, it's got the clean lines and smooth features you would expect and separates it from the non-gaming stock. When you open the lid you would be forgiven for thinking the keyboard is already lit before your switch it on. In actual fact HP have painted the edges of the keys a metallic green that does look really funky, simple but effective. The weight is also interesting, this weighs a shade under 3kg whereas my twice-the-thickness Alienware is a kilo up. I couldn't help wondering how this HP manages to get rid of heat from the cpu/gpu.Port-wise, we have headphone and 2xUSB 3 ports to the right and 1 HDMI, 1 USB 3, 1 LAN, 1 USB-C and a SD card slow to the right.Turning on and because of it's SSD, it's straight into Windows 10. If you have a gaming PC with an SSD then there is no real difference here and is now the expected norm.Keyboard lights up, I don't think you can change the colour, maybe I'm wrong but I couldn't find it. You don't get a load of bloatware but you do get some. McAffee Livesafe is installed and an HP application. Both are quiet and don't bother you for the most part.Plenty of storage in this, 1.5Tb in total.Played a few music videos on YouTube and the sound on this is *really* good. Having Bang and Olufson speakers, this thing is great! Very impressed and makes my Alienware sound like a tin can.Now to try a game. I picked Warframe. It's been 6 months since I played it but I know it well. Like with a lot of laptops, this has two graphics chips, one for chugging along and a GTX 1660 Ti (6Gb) for gaming/high intensity stuff. Loaded Warframe and it switched seamlessly. Stuck all options to Max with the max resolution of this screen (1080p). Played a heavy, busy mission and.....not a lag in sight not in performance and not on the screen. Not only was it more than able to cope, I heard no sound from the fans either! The silence was weird and I had to check it was working. The battery, although small also lasted around 5 hours when using normal desktop tasks. Looking at some review sites, this suggests how low the power consumption is compared to other gaming laptops.All-in-all, to get a comparable Alienware you can easily tack on another 400 quid. If you want decent performance, low power consumption from a recognised brand and don't care about the plastics then look no further than this. Exceptionally impressive for it's price.Well done HP.

I was really nervous about purchasing a gaming laptop due to limitations of upgrading, I have a desktop already and I really needed to upgrade to more newer specs with Windows 10. I spent a few months researching and I settled with the HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop with 1660ti. 512 gigabytes and 8 gig of RAM. I would have gone for a secondary hard drive, but I don't think I'll need to as I use an external drive with no loading problems when gaming. I would recommend you download the GeForce experience from Nvidia to begin with, this will configure your graphics card so it runs your games, afterwards you can just run your games as normal.Somehow this configures the graphics card to run the games instead of the Intel graphics built in.I tested the following games:Crysis - GTA V - Gears of War Ultimate Edition - Forza Horizons - Just Cause 2- Tomb Raider Underworld - Rocket League, Fortnite, Call of Duty War one and Torchlight 2.All of them except Forza (for some unknown reason) ran at 60+ fps, mind-blowing results. All with very high or Max settings, the monitor frame rate is great, I play Fortnite competativly and really have no issues at all. The color is just as nice as any monitor I use which are mainly Dell monitors, or you can connect to a monitor or flat screen TV using HDMI or dual monitor with Thunderbolt. You have enough USB slots for your devices and the USB port on the left hand side can charge your tablet, phone or powerbank when not in use :)The keyboard lights up and you have all your laptop options on your F keys for brightness of monitor, second monitor options, volume, all the good options within reach :)You'll not get the best fps if you're in battery mode, and fps reduces at that point, it's great for watching video and casual gaming without the power supply in. Once your power cable is in then your performance goes up to normal. The power supply is 200watt which is incredible for the performance and sheer quality in the laptop.I have also downloaded GPU Z and CPU monitor as I was worried about the temperatures the laptop could get to. At full load gaming it goes to around 60-70 degrees for both GPU and CPU, again, amazing cooling which you can improve by purchasing a cooling pad. When not gaming the GPU and cpu drop to 30-40 degrees. The screen size is 15" which is a great size, any bigger and I would feel like it was too big. That's my prepherence size for gaming. I don't have any doubts over the purchase. You can always store games on to a USB Stick that you're not using or playing, there really isn't any need to add a hard drive. Write speeds are rapid nowadays for memory sticks, cards or external drives.Be sure to keep your laptop clean of junk by using cleaner and make sure to configure your graphics card in the Nvidia control panel. Remove and apps you won't need that came with the laptop. You'll be set to go. I wanted the Omen from HP but this is a phoenomanel piece of technolgy.I've also while gaming live streamed at the same time, you don't feel any performance drop, it truly does the job it's supposed to, for the price, it is well made. Remember to get GeForce Experience. One other tip would be to turn off indexing of your hard drive, this will increase the performance. That's just done by right clicking you hard drive then uncheck index mode. There is Bluetooth on this laptop and camera but I have these disabled to increase performance. The laptop does get hot in gaming and gets loud, if you wa t this laptop to feel good for gaming then purchase noise cancelling headphones. I would recommend a cooling pad for lap gaming use. You will also find that the power block for the plug does get very hot, best to have a fan near that also as you could have an issue later on.Used right this laptop will last you but it's really a flexible laptop that will offer great gaming.Any questions I'll see if I can help.

I bought this laptop to replace my MSI GP72 gaming laptop that died after about 3 1/2 years, and so far I'm very impressed. I upgraded the memory to 32GB right away though. There isn't an access hatch, but the cover was reasonably easy to remove. It's a shame there wasn't an option for that when I bought it. I also performed a clean Windows 10 Home installation right out of the box. I can't stand bloat-ware.Design: I love the look of this laptop. The unusual angles are sleek and make it stand out from other more square looking laptops. The twin vents on the back give it a futuristic feel. The green backlit keyboard is perfect for a fan of The Matrix (and yes, I did set a Matrix-style screensaver, haha). The angle on the front edge makes it a little sharp, which can be a little uncomfortable on the wrists, at least until you adjust to it.Quality: Solid and sturdy feeling, zero bounce on the keyboard. The mouse pad is one of those you press the bottom corners for left and right click, and it does rock/rattle a little. The screen hinge is solid but the screen is so thin that it does wobble a little at the top. I haven't tested it on a train personally, but I don't think it's enough of a wobble to be of annoyance to a commuter.Gaming: The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti is lightning fast. I can play most of my games on maximum settings and I have yet to see the FPS drop below 60.Power: I can run multiple instances of Unity or Unreal Engine along side blender while its rendering video, paintshop pro with multiple images open, while watching Netflix without issue (32GB RAM upgrade helps there I think though). I haven't even begun to tax the CPU.Speed: The M.2 SSD means the laptop goes from cold to Windows desktop in just a few seconds, and I think the BIOS power-on-self-test actually takes most of that time. Games load so fast you often don't get a chance to take in the loading screens. Android Studio compile times are seconds instead of minutes.Cool: Even under heavy loads the laptop remains cool and reasonably quiet. As mentioned, there are two vents on the back, which presumably give it that extra airflow.Audio: It seems every laptop I get the sound gets better and better. This one has has been blessed by Bang & Olufson with a pair of built-in speakers. Don't expect thumping bass, it's a very thin laptop after all, but it's more than adequate.Storage: The secondary 1TB drive is plenty fast also, faster than I expected for a physical drive, but perhaps that's just the SSD speeding up the whole system. Conclusion: Of all the available options to me at the time, this was possibly the best value - lots of bang for my buck. With the speed and power this thing has, it can handle pretty much everything I throw at it, from intensive online gaming to large projects in Unreal or Unity. Very happy and satisfied customer.

Purchased the 15.6 i7 model for light gaming, and CAD, CAM & FEA; it runs everything without issue.I bought this after having my previous HP laptop for 10 years, which only failed me due to the battery becoming unuseable (and no replacement available from HP). I hope the build quality of this new laptop is up to the same standard, but it certainly feels better! The backlit keyboard is excellent, and very comfortable to type with. The screen quality is fantastic. and visible even in sunlight. The onboard speakers are surprisingly loud, with great clarity (the best I've used on a PC!)The form factor overall is on the larger side, but this is of course the compromise for the excellent integrated graphics and lower working temperatures. The size has at no point bothered me.I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone; at the price, it is one of the most powerful and well built machines available (if not the best).

Reliable, powerful, light and cool. Money has been saved with the plastic case, but what they've done with it makes it still look good. Battery started with a bad standby time but seems to have improved over time as it gets conditioned.Works great for VR development and also works well with Linux, however it took some effort to get the driver to work - this device isn't officially supported to run Linux unfortunately! But I can confirm it's possible. It's worth noting that this laptop comes with a completely free and ready to use 2.5 inch storage slot. I put in the SSD from my last laptop with relative ease, although getting the back panel off is a little scary - you might need something thin and strong to pry it off as its a very tight fit.

Good performance, can play most of the AAA game with high setting, beautiful display for photo editing (uk 60Hz has much better display than us version), light enough for carrying around, battery on saver mode up to 5 hours which is good for gaming laptop, good speaker, nice keyboard. 2 bad things are thermo problems, after 20 min of playing Metro Exodus cpu temp is around 95-98 celsius, need undervolt and repaste, and the other thing is the touchpad, which is really bad, tracking is ok but feel super cheap, keep having clicking sound which is very annoying (really bad for a 1000 pounds laptop) so I only use mouse. Overall this is a very nice laptop with some flaws.

2.4.2020

The screen design a bit flimsy but wow the graphics and power great runs games great on high and some ultra new titles. Very quite fan on extreme gaming. The touch pad and surface a bit of finger magnet. Sound quality acceptable for laptop. Tips put another SD drive in swap out to samusung or something faster speeds. Also upgrade ram to 16gb. Very easy to do and open laptop . Next thing go into the intel graphics card software in windows and change the Colour settings turn up vibrance to 100 or to taste and see your games look brilliant no more washed out look.

6.7.2020

This laptop is a great laptop for its value. Can play in 60fps+ in most games in ultra settings. Note:most games are maxed at 60fps because the screen is 60hz but you can go to the game settings and disable the cap and you will get higher fps even if the screen is 60hz. For people who think 60hz is not good, I had a 120hz screen and can not see the difference, infact this 60hz screen is better. I have 512gb ssd model which is great. Adobe products run great in this laptop especially photoshop and premier pro. Reccomend this laptop

16.10.2019

The price is reasonable. The specs are excellent but after unpacking the laptop I realised the touchpad is quite loose. In other words, even when you gently rub your fingertip on it, it starts to make click sounds, that is it is rattling as you touch it. I called the hp customer service to get it picked up and repaired. This is my second bad experience with HP. I had an issue with HP omen so I returned it.Edit:I decided to give it a five star rate, previously 3 stars, despite that bad I had as the specs are great.

26.2.2020

I bought this for my son as his first laptop. First impressions are very good. The build quality for the price is very good, I personally think the style/design is really nice, and the weight is good for its size (i.e. not too heavy).Setting it up as pretty much as expected for a windows 10 machine and took around an hour with updates etc. The backlit keyboard is really nice and to me felt nice to type with, and the screen is nice too.I'll update this review in a month or so if I remember with battery life etc.

9.7.2020

I got it for casual browsing and watching movies etc. It is more than capable to do most everyday tasks. Really fast boot up. Great screen. I like the build quality as well. Its not extremely solid, but not flimsy either. Decent weight for 15.6 inch as well. The fan can get heated occasionally but its nothing to worry about. I've had worst ones for sure! Personally good value for money. Last 5 to 7 years easily. As long as it keeps up to date with the ever changing Windows OS.

18.6.2020

i7 10 gen, GTX card , 16gb RAM and 500 SSD+ 1tb HDD at this price is amazing. Runs quicker than time itself, Photoshop CC, 4 sec from boot, build is great, keyboard lovely and as for the touch pad ( bit plasticky) , and who uses a touch pad?Screen is huge and beautiful. As a photgrapher and graphic designer this is exactly what I wanted, fast, great graphics and 17.3 in screen. It even has two exhaust ports round the back that I may put two red LED's in.

17.4.2020

Had it for over 4 months and very happy with it. Looks good, plays games like Fallen Order on top specs smoothly. Also quick for all other operations and I'm experimenting with photo and video production on it and no problems so far but I have barely started so can't comment really on the side of things. Battery life is only set back, it will last up to 2 hours on normal activity. But overall working to a high standard and at a good price.

15.4.2020

What a wonderful piece of kit this is.... Fast, efficient and reliable. The picture quality is ace.I bought it because we are homeschooling our children due to the current climate of lockdown. We have a desktop, but we discovered that our tablets where broken and so needed something quickly.Delivery was next day, so not much interruption to our children learning.Highly recommend this product ?
