I’ve had one of these Starter Kit’s for about 3 months now. I did my homework before buying because there seem to be loads of home automation products out there but the Hauppauge Z-Wave one seemed to be the only one which allows you to create detailed rules for your house. I don’t just mean ‘turn off’ / ‘turn on’ kind of rules, I mean ‘turn lights on if the room is dark and it is after 8pm’ kind of rules. This kit gives you the controller (which is a bit like a broadband router), two controllable wall plugs and a sensor that can measure lighting, temperature, movements and open/shut positions and all can be controlled via your phone or you PC. I have the controller plugged into my Ethernet hub,one wall plug in my front room with the sensor in the same room and the other plug in my bedroom. Both plugs have lamps plugged into them.On my PC I have set up rules that means that, in my front room, the Plug works in conjunction with the Sensor and turns the lamp on and off based on the time of day and the level of lighting in the room at that time. Obviously if the room is too bright you won’t need lights on and, vice versa, if it is unusually dark you will need them on early. Mine is set to run the rule everyday but you can select whatever days of the week you want. My other plug is in my bedroom and doesn’t work with a sensor it is simply timed to come on early weekday mornings (off by 9am everyday) and then on at 5.30pm and off at 3am. This is set late but I turn it off using my phone once I am in bed.The rulings take a little getting used to but there are videos online showing you how to set them up and then once you understand it the choice is yours regarding what rules you set in your house. You can create Scenes too, I don’t quite have enough accessories to set these up fully yet but the Scenes allow you, with one press on your phone, to control many different devices at one time. When I have the correct accessories yet I will set Scenes for bedtime, when I leave the house and holidays etc.

Works superbly. Such a neat piece of kit. You can do so much with it, the rules can be as simple or as complex as you like. I've really got the smarthome bug now. I have my lamps wired up to come on when it gets dark and my favourite is the fish tank lights turn off when we go out to work to save electricity and come on when my wife comes home and opens the front door.I've added lots of extra accessories (the mySmarthome Camera, more of the mySmarthome 4:1 sensors on each external door in the house and one in the lounge). They even do a flood sensor which I have under the fish tank :-)It also supports 3rd party Z-Wave devices, so I've added Z-Wave dimmer modules to all of my wall light switches (Bit of DIY).I can dim the lights from the comfort of my sofa.

The plugs and the sensors work directly with SmartThings so you don't need the hub if you have SmartThings. Brilliant price for the kit given 2 official SmartThings plugs would come to £90, and an official SmartThings multi sensor would be another £30. I'm also thinking the included Z-Wave hub may be useful as a Z-Wave repeater. The sensor does need a SmartThings device type handler to be copied/pasted on a SmartThings web page, but that's easy to do. Brilliant value for money.

Plug and play, never fails, simple out of the box. Best hub I have hadExcellently made hub with extra range extension that connects with zero effort to your home network. This is the MOST compatible with OTHER platforms and just for that reason should be part of your home automation setup. With this solution show your friends how much of a home automation boss you are!

Five stars based on the purchase price of £38 when these were on crazy special offer.I can't comment on the Hauppauge hub thing as that's still in the box, but the smart plugs and motion/contact sensor all work absolutely spot on with my SmartThings as they're standard technology and just pair to anything compatible.Wouldn't buy at the current price of £99 though.
