Wow! A fabulous home automation system received for review courtesy of Vine and Bosch. It’s a German product; need I say more? It’s nicely but complicatedly packed, has lovely solidly built aesthetics and works more or less from the box or at least with an easy set-up.One simply follows the precise and methodical instructions. Install the App first, which takes a minute or two, then the hub controller and make sure it’s connected to the internet. I used an iPad as my device and it is then a simple matter of installing each device in turn by scanning the QR code. One could also load it to one’s phone.Stickers are available with the specific QR code but the nice thing is each device has it duplicated in the battery compartment so that it isn’t really possible to lose them or get them mixed up! Everything is there that one needs for a set up including screws rawlplugs and even batteries. The starter kit contains a door or window contact and two central heating valves known as TRV (thermostatic radiator valves).Once the App is running one simply installs the devices one at a time and you can label the devices and the rooms they go in so as to enable one to achieve precise control. The hub or Smart Home Controller is a slim and elegant device one can leave it flat on a shelf or wall mount it and the wires tuck away nicely although I think it would look superb in either a new build or if one were prepared to channel out the plaster for the wires before mounting it in a central location.I installed the magnetic window and door contact first and this is easy enough. I made the mistake of positioning the magnet at the lower end but it really needs to go at the top end next to the LED light. Also be careful as the cover needs to slide down a little to take it off or up to re-position it. I’d positioned mine at the bottom edge of the door and set it a little too low. The instructions advise positioning at the top edge of windows and doors so you may wish to bear this in mind.I then positioned the central heating TRVs and once again the App and the scanned QR code leads to a simple 3-step installation which is fairly quick. The TRV spends a minute or two self-calibrating and will then communicate with the App and also allow one to regulate the temperature of the TRV/room. Please note we have TRV valves fitted to nearly all our radiators and these simply unscrew and the Bosch controller will take up the same threaded mount and screwing it home by hand is sufficient. There are various adaptors included for radiators without TRVs. Also please take a look at the photos as the TRV can be a little prominent in certain pipe configurations and I was able to switch mine round a little before the wife came home! Please note too there is still a manual override on each TRV and my wife likes to turn them up to maximum if she feels a little chilly.Setup for both types of device went smoothly and without complications. The App is well-featured and easy to use. It is also versatile and capable of being expanded with more devices and also different types of device such as the Philips lighting range and also smoke detectors and powered sockets. It also upgrades automatically. The diagram I saw was for continental type plugs but I am sure that a company with the resources of Robert Bosch will produce a typical English 3-pin sockets too. The App is also capable of being fine-tuned not just for things like alarms when the door or window has been opened or one of the smoke detectors goes off but one can also program a pattern of say a ‘working day’ or ‘holiday’ and so on where one would require different temperatures in certain rooms at certain times of the day. If our girls come home for the weekend I turn up the TRVs in their room and en-suite and down again when they leave. This system would do all that automatically once the certain pattern had been saved. Thus one might have “Lottie, home” or “Emily, away” and so on. Similarly one could adjust temperatures if a door was open. As you will realise this can all be done remotely so lights and heating could be on as one leaves work.As I hope I have conveyed, this is a taster of things to come. There are few household items/appliances that cannot be configured and then controlled in this way and it’s fascinating to watch it tweak the radiator valves. I see there is compatibility with the Philips lighting range so one could be in when one is out and so on. Ultimately, once the controller is installed all else will follow and hence my suggestion of wiring it in properly from the outset as I suspect the range of applications and devices will expand steadily. I suspect too that it would be very easy to allow compatibility with burglar alarms and home door-entry systems.Ultimately, then this is the start of a much larger home automation and the only limits I suspect will be the availability of suitable interfaces and one’s imagination. Without doubt the potential is massive and one could do a lot worse than making a start with this system. Many thanks.

I was initially wary of installing this, but actually it was quite straight forward, it took less time that I expected and there was nothing particularly complicated, however you will need access to the correct tools. The regulator units are quite bulky, and not particularly attractive, but how often to you look at the base of a radiator. That there are only two of them is annoying, particularly when you look at the price for this setup, so you have to make sure you choose the two radiators well - the obvious choice would be those near windows that you open a lot, so you can reap the benefits of the window sensors. The base unit is nice, and works with my Hue lights as well as this new setup. The benefits of having a Bosch base unit would start to become more and more apparent as you get further into their eco-system - joining all the separate products together, but for the moment I haven't seen how effective it is at doing this, aside from my lights, and I will continue to use the Hue app as it has more features. The app itself is alright, it has it's quirks (as all smart home apps seem to have) but it does the job, and setup was again easier than I thought it might be.It's a good idea, one of the biggest costs for maintaining a house can be heating, so anything that can help reduce these costs by even 5% would be worth it. The window sensors are a really nice addition to the base set, I would have expected them to be a separate add-on, and these are key to the kit working successfully. The high price may put some people off, but if you get one now the money you start saving could really make it worth it. If you are already using Bosch smart appliances this would be a good addition.

I found the theromasat controls and adjustments need for my radiator akward and cumbersome to put on . Depending on your radiators it can be really easy , or like mine a lot of unscrewing an dadaptors to be added. This to be honest did put me off and the adaptors don’t look as neat either .Once set up it works well and the ease of being able to control your heating when your away from home and with the Uk’s Constantly changing weather is good. I do think if it was set up that it might be very good for elderly people and making sure their heating is on and ata healthy temperature . For this I think it funstions very well.It works better than my old general temperature gauge .I did feel it a bitpricey for what you get and would be interested in the add on’s but I would suggest maybe looking at the next model up when purchasing and spending a bit more to get a more complete home security and home heating system .

We've been Hue users for a while, but this Climate Control kit from Bosch (part of their "Smart Home" range of connected products) goes one step further, allowing specific radiators to be controlled by your phone app.The principle is quite simple, but a good one; you screw the control knob off your radiator, replace it with the thermostatic one from the kit (the kit comes with two, so this can control two radiators), and then you use the Bosch Smart Home app to control these. You set the required temperature from the app, which then sends commands to the thermostatic knob to turn to either open or close the radiator valve as appropriate. This works really well, and the app is perhaps the best home control app I've seen. It's a really good idea, and works well. The only downside is that the kit does two radiators, but I guess Bosch then want you to buy more!

As more and more home automation products are devised, they are getting better and easier to use. This has a central control unit and two radiator controls. The temperature can be set and adjusted using a smart phone/tablet.The window open sensor can be used to detect of the window is open so that can adjust the radiator temperature accordingly. As they are smart phone controlled you can do this from anywhere. These are easy to set up and use. It can also be used as the start of a much bigger system by adding additional modules to it. I expect that the price will come down as more products come onto the market and it becomes more competitive. At the moment,I think that the price is going to deter many people.

This is s starter pack for the Bosch Smart Home system. We already have four rooms fitted with Phillips Hue lights so I was a bit sceptical that this would integrate fully and not mean having two separate apps to control heat and lights. The kit comes with the home hub which plugs directly into the router (no Ethernet cable supplied), download the app and then hey presto away you go, controlling radiators and checking access via the door contact. The app is easy to use and includes controls to set up hue lights within the app. although its not as good on the options front as the hue app it does offer a certain amount of functionality.A neat starter kit for the smart home.

As an entry point to smart home / home automation, this is a concise but really nicely thought out pack. In the box, you'll find two radiator thermostats, a door / window contact and a central controller (which you have to connect to your router via the included cable first in order to complete setup). Admittedly, those components are realistically going to cover just a single room or two at a push, but it will give you the framework and a basis from which to extend your system in a modular way over time (further radiator thermostats, for example, are available fairly affordably on Amazon:

This was surprisingly easy to set up. I'm not sure it will be of much use to a lot of people but it's pretty handy for me because I have rooms that I don't use much so I don't want the radiators boiling up when no one is in them. I'll know for sure how effective this is when the winter kicks in and the fuel bills arrive. In the meantime though I think this could be a popular product in the future, particularly when it comes down in price.
