As shown in the picture, it's 8 metal pressed plates sitting on two runners. The on the minus side, the plates aren't painted on both sides and the runners are made of plastic. The plates are very easy to pull of the rubber nails. So some shortcuts have been taken. On the plus side, the sound produced, does appear to be in tune.I'm intending to give it to my niece but will be substituting the hard plastic striker with something softer.Give the plates a fair tap and the note is clear and very piercing. Glad I'm giving it away!I would have prefered a wooden one, but you would have to pay twice the price to ensure the keys were in tune. The booklet mentioned in the description is a single sheet of paper folded in half. You get 4 tunes,Jingle Bells, Little Jonathan, Old McDonald Had a Farm and Beethoven's 9th Symphony. The wife reckons it could do with my notes, but as an introduction to music it should be fine.

This is a well priced product, it is well constructed but unfortunately it can have it's bars removed a little easily by a child, do worry a little that this could lead to the bits that the bar is held on with breaking as they are small bits of rubber. The product comes with a few tunes you can play, the sound is very good it is not annoying and tin like as can be a problem with similar products. The colours make it very enticing for a child and also easy for an adult to differentiate notes and help a child by saying which colour to play. No issues with packaging.Wanted to update this as nearly a full year on this product is going strong no broken rubber bits despite being repeatedly removed by our little one, also paint work is still intact despite being knocked bashed and generally loved in a way that only toddlers can! still love this product.

I've gotten a nice scare at a toy store once, when a woman approached me when I was just about to buy a xylophone and lectured me that it should be properly tuned or else it might give my child a harmful start in music. I have no idea if that's true, but I set out to find a well tuned xylophone instead. 2 weeks of going through online reviews, I finally settled on this one and was super happy when it arrived. The sound is amazing and my boy loves it. He's 7 months old and I never ever let him unattended with it, as the keys are pretty sharp and the sticks are slim and long, but when attended, he loves to listen to it, loves to 'play' it himself. It comes with 4 sheets of music but we just have fun figuring out popular children's songs on it ourselves.

This xylophone actually sounds lovely, properly tuned and finished. Shops should not be allowed to sell monstrous plastic noise-making toys and call them a xylophone, for a few more pounds you can get this one which might actually inspire your child to play tunes on it instead of hitting the cat with it. Says from 3 upwards but my son had it from 13 months, at that age they can pull the keys off if they have the urge but there are no small parts and two years later ours is still in fine working order. Unlike the rubbish plastic drum we got which was swiftly replaced by a nice sounding wooden one.

My mother bought this for my one year old daughter's Christmas.Overall, it's well made, properly tuned and has a pleasant tone, but potential buyers should note that the manufacturer's recommended age is 3years and up, not the 12months+ Amazon states at the head of the technical details. This is a glockenspiel, not a xylophone, so the bars are made of metal and there are sharp edges. Because of this we are not happy to let our daughter play with it unsupervised.I've had a good tinker though, and i can play the themes to Waybuloo and In The Night Garden!

The kids (1,5 and 2,5 years) immediately started playing with the xylophone, which was a good sign, and they've come back to it. My only disappointment is that it came up when I searched on wooden xylophone, but the base isn't wood, it is plastic (there's now another review saying that, but it was posted after I ordered). At least it looks nice and like nice quality, and the sound is good, rather than annoying. I wish it came with a little song sheet like some do, but it didn't - have to find some online!

Having bought a much fancier wooden music set, I was disappointed with the tunelessness of it, so returned it and swapped it for individual instruments. This xylophone is well tuned and the sound is clear and resonant - they can be quite muffled. No probles with general durability - a couple of tiny chips of paint have chipped off, but that's only to be expected. Pretty good going when you consider my 2 year old insists on taking the bars off.

I initially thought the xylophone was quite costly, after all, it is only a toy. However, it has excellent sound quality, and looks attractive.I cannot at this stage comment on its durability, as I have only had it a few weeks, but already some of the "keys" have come off. They are easy to put back on, as it is a rubber connection. All in all, I am delighted with my purchase

my grandson's eyes lit up as soon as he saw the bright colours and heard the pleasant sounds he can produce with this toy. It is a real little musical instrument, well tuned. I am writing a few more songs for him to go with the sheet music that comes with the xylophone. As yet he is too young to play a tune, but until he can, I'm having fun with this delightful toy as well!

My 1 and 2 year old love this for different reasons...1 year old..."Wheee if I smack this with the beaters (which double as top notch chewing sticks - supervised by mummy of course) it makes brilliant noises."2 year old..."Muahahaha these notes come off and I can slide them down the back of the radiator!"It is a lovely xylophone and has made a great purchase.

Fun to play both for a baby and for an adult. The package also includes a leaflet with 4 simple melodies to play, which comes in very handy for an amateur in music. What concerns conttruction of a toy, it should have been better. Plates have very sharp edges and it's easy for a baby to get cut in a hand.

I bought this for my son's 1st birthday. Yes, he can't really play tunes yet but he loves banging it, running the sticks over the bars and chuckles a the noise he hears. The the notes are REAL notes, not just toy (poorly tuned) notes, so the parent-annoyance factor is greatly reduced.

My son is 20mths old and he loves this toy. He has got the hang of what he is supposed to do and although he clearly cannot make 'music' the sounds that he does make are not unpleasant. Would be a great gift and much kinder on the parents than the wooden alternatives.

We bought this for our 8 month old and he instantly worked out what to do with the sticks - bash, bash bash! Rather an experimental composition but fun none the less. Certainly a great toy for helping to develop hand eye coordination. The keys are nicely tuned.

Excellent. I bought this for my 2 year old son who is very musical and he loves it. The sound quality is excellent as it is tuned to perfection and it is very robust. We are not quite up to Evelyn Glennie standards but I am delighted with this.5 stars
