I bought this rear cover for my third generation iPad to replace a conceptually similar model by another manufacturer which broke for no obvious reason.Firstly, a generic word of warning about iPad back covers. Many are billed as being compatible with the iPad 2 as well as the latest generation model but I'd be sceptical of that claim as these types of covers are very close and tight fitting, and, the new iPad is slightly thicker than the old one. The issue I've encountered is that some of these "compatible" covers are too tight on the newer iPad and can crack especially at the corners - I have personal experience of this. The cover reviewed here is specifically for the latest generation iPad and is not affected by this issue.I like this Griffin version,it comes well packed and unlike previous models by a different manufacturer it wasn't scratched - inevitably a cover like this will get scratched, but, for it to be scratched out of the box would be unacceptable. This Griffin Outfit Cover fits securely to the iPad but without affecting the operation of the Apple Smart Cover and provides good protection for the rear of the device, and, importantly, the corners too. The finish is matt and slightly opaque, and, although reasonably thick, it does not add to the bulk of iPad and leaves all the controls/mic/camera lens unimpeded. It is a hard cover not a gel type, somehow, despite not being absolutely smooth, it does not seem to make the iPad any less slippery in your hands. However, in my view, this rear cover together with an Apple smart cover, is the ideal way to take care of your iPad at home. When "out on the road" I use a portfolio case and this rear cover can be left in place when putting the device into my specific portfolio case, although, other models of portfolio case may be more precisely designed and not accommodate the rear cover.I give this Griffin rear cover a big thumbs up. You should be aware, that to my knowledge, that it comes in at least two finishes, the one depicted here, a smoky black (the pictures are confusing though) as well as a "clear" version and both versions have an opaque finish. Recommended.

Slightly too smooth ( I had a satin rubberised one before that gripped better) but I soon got used to it.Very satisfactory
