Okay, so I am a bit older than your average gamer, and retired to boot, but a friend of mine has been 'flying' his FSX (as its called in the simming world) for many years, from the days when is was just 2D under Windows 3 or something. Anyway, at age 60 I decided to see what all the fuss was about, and have been 'playing' with FSX for a month or two now. Verdict? This is not just a game!! It is a full blown simulation - the only downside (or is it an upside?) is you don't get airsick, you can't feel the air turbulence and you can set it up so you never run out of fuel and you never crash, but that misses the point. This 'game' is very absorbing. The stock aircraft are very realistically modeled, have all the instruments you would expect of the real aircraft and they work the way they do in real life. Admittedly the stock scenery is a little basic, but, there are lots of add-ons available that make the experience really realistic. At the basic level all you need is your PC and a keyboard or mouse, although a joystick will make things a little easier to control. You can just fly around for as long as you feel like it or you can plan a flight just as the real pilots would, filing their flight plan with Air Traffic Control and talking in real time to an AT Controller who gives you specific instructions of when to taxi, take off etc. Once airborne ATC may send you on a different heading and you can use the full facilities that real pilots would to manage their flight plan, from Non-Directional Beacons, VOR (VHF Omnidirectional range), GPS, Auto Pilot - the list goes on. If you want to know how to fly a Boeing 747 down to a little Cessna, all are possible. You can make your 'cockpit' as realistic as you want too. I went out and bought the Saitek Cessna Yoke, the Rudder Pedals and the Trim Wheel, as I had had one flying lesson in my youth in a Cessna, but mainly because I couldn't get on with a joystick, but that may be down to my arthritic hands. These 'add-ons' alone have enhanced the feeling that you are really flying. Even the sounds of the engines etc., are realistic. I could go on.As I said at the outset this is not just a game, but a full simulation that can take you anywhere in the world. The best bit is you don't have to buy any plane tickets, you don't have to buy fuel and you are not restricted as to where you can fly to. All the airports in the world are available to use, you can even fly over Mt. Everest, the pyramids, Las Vegas etc., and you can do it in whatever weather conditions or time of day/year you fancy. You can even download real-world weather to fly in.This is a fantastic simulation and one that will give you hours, days, weeks or even months of enjoyment. Even though the program was released in 2007, the simming community is so vibrant you will never run out of things to try or places to go. Recommended.

Having been playing Flight Simulator 2002 for AGES, I was eager to get the newest version of it - FSX: and I can tell you that it is absolutely brilliant! The graphics are a dream and the game is so playable. I was hooked for some time - basically this pc game does not get boring.Contrary to a lot of the comments about this product saying that "you need an incredibly high spec computer to run this game" I do not think you do. As many people think you need to full graphics activated for the game to be good, you don't. It's better to have the game on low graphics, running smoothly than on high graphics and stuttering. Therefore, the point I am trying to make is FSX will run smoothly on any modern computer if the graphics settings are low - medium.I usually run FSX on medium graphics as I have a medium spec computer (a HP Pavilion with Windows Vista) and the graphics are still really good.Getting back to the game: I think this re-creates a real flying experience as I think the physics of all the movements of the plane are very realistic. You can chose a range of weather conditions and you can make adjustments to settings you want to change such as wind. This then changes how the plane flies e.g. goes slower when wind is on and hard to make a landing. After playing Flight simulator 2002 for a long time, it came as a surprise to me how realistic this game can get. You can request a fuel truck; you can get a jet-bridge hooked up to your plane; the wings move and flop about in high wind conditions and you can even buy an addition pack to the game which lets you sit in the cabin of the plane and hear safety warnings and speech. Very realistic. The Missions on FSX are very good ranging from delivering food to a remote part of the Amazon River to making a landing in India during the monsoon season. These missions are all rated on difficulty level so you can see how challenging it is.Another improved feature is the navigation systems on the planes. It is now easier and more realistic to make an auto-piloted landing or to guide your plane through the air automatically. I really love to crash and bash things *ha ha* and guess what - this game lets you do that. Maybe not in the most realistic way for example when you crash your plane into the ground it just sinks in however, there is fire and the smoke affects are very good. Last of all, I just want to say that the water effects are probably the best I have ever seen on a computer game. They're incredible!Anyway, overall, I would recommend this game to anyone who likes the Flight Simulator series and anyone who likes realistic simulation games. I loved this game that's for sure. :)

First, to make a point:Contrary to popular beleif, you do not need the Godfather of all Systems to run this game. You do not need the mother of all systems to run this game on respectible settings. You do not need to spend your life savings on a system to run this game at full settings. Infact, you can do it for around £500, and that was 6 months ago.My system specs:-Intel C2 6420 (overclocked from 2.13GHz to 2.4GHZ on stock cooling)(£99.85)-Geforce 8800GTS 320 (£153.18+vat)-Atrix 650W Silent Power Supply (£27.99)-Maxtor 320gb 7200RPM SATAII HDD (36.00+vat)-ABIT Fatal1ty Motherboard (58.18+vat)-Corsair 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 (5-5-5-12)(59.57+vat)My FSX Settings: Ultra HighMy Monitor: Samsung SM226BW 22" Widescreen (1680x1050 res)My Gameplay: Smooth as any simile you wantThe key here is the graphics card: The GeForce 8800's most basic model is around THREE TIMES BETTER specification wise than the best GeForce 8600 model. Nothing else listed here is that different from what other reviewers have listed-I cannot stress enough how important a good graphics card is.In short, if you are serious about your flight sims, you may want to spend a bit upgrading your system (or, build your own)Second, To Review the game:As realistic a flying experience as this can come from no other. The new 3D virtual cockpit is just what was needed (You can look around the flightdeck, and operate everything in view), and adds great realism. Every plane, as expected demonstrates its own flying characterstics-it is possible to detect differences between the Maule Orion variants (with and without skis). The scenery is good, not excellent. Built up areas are represented by large block buildings, except in larger cities, where the skyline is similar, but again, not perfect. However, saying this, it is an improvement on 2004, and besides, it can't be that easy to cram the whole world into 15GB.The airports are largely accurate, the bigger the airport, the more accurate it is-don't expect your local field to be a carbon copy, and don't bother looking for your house when you take off from it :p (I can't even find my university)The missions are enjoyable, challenging for any skill level (possibly exempting those with an ATPL), and come in great quantity. All in all, with the right graphics card, this game is a winner, providing the most realistic flight simulation available today. It can be used for fun flying, serious flying, to assist in flight training, and for landing a 744 on an aircraft carrier. Happy Landings-JM FL

A lot has been said about Flight Sim X regarding the system requirements, almost to the point where the rest of the sim is forgotten. This is a shame because its such a great simulation with plenty of aircraft to fly, from jumbo jets to gliders and helicopters and thousands of cities and airports to fly to. The ground detail is by default quite generic unless you're flying across the USA, but many of the terrain packs available for Flight Sim 2004 are also compatible with this so the landmarks and roads you expect to see can be added in later. There is also a way of incorporating the photography from Google Earth into it, although I haven't yet got to grips with the program thats available to do it.There are a large number of missions to try, starting with the very basic taking off and landing in a light aircraft to landing a chopper on an oil rig in a storm. Speaking of storms, there is also a function to allow FSX to download the weather conditions for the area you are flying in, for a bit of extra realism.Sure, the system requirements are quite high. It would have been silly for Microsoft to create a game that didn't push modern PC's to their limits. From reading various blogs from Microsoft staff involved in FSX, their intention was to make it so that it was quite resource hungry to keep it fresh. On the options screen nearly every setting is on a slider, so you can gradually increase the settings depending on how well it runs and you can even set a target framerate.I'm currently running it on Windows Vista with an overclocked Athlon X2 CPU, 2GB RAM and a Geforce 8800GTS graphics card and it runs quite nicely with most of the sliders on full. Unfortunately it can be quite jerky when looking around the cabin. The reason why a lot of systems struggle with FSX is because it is quite CPU intensive, unlike a lot of games that rely on the graphics card more than the CPU, so even with the best graphics card, it'll splutter if your CPU isn't up to the job. There are a few updates on their way though. "Service Pack 1" is allegedly going to move the load further towards the graphics card to improve performance. There is also a Direct3D10 update on the way, allowing FSX to utilise the more efficient driver model and DirectX features in Windows Vista, whilst adding a bit of extra detail along the way. There is also an expansion pack coming too called "Adrenaline", but this may require Vista and a Direct3d10 compatible graphics card to run properly.

I find some are being a little to harsh about Flight simulator X hardware requirements. It does require a decent spec PC, but this is'nt unusual because each edition of Flight Simulator has needed a good PC. I remember when Flight simulator 2000 was released it suffered the same critism. It would be wise too test the Demo before purchasing or if the System is not upto running Flight simulator X then a Copy of Flight simulator 2004 is wise.Flight simulator X does include improvements that once appreciated are exceptional. I really like some of the scenery and it looks much better than in Flight simulator 2004. Yes its true that some scenery parts like previous editions look bland, but I would rather microsoft put as much effort as possible into the scenic wonders of the world. Its more than likely that third party developers will develope scenery add ons, so that your favourite flying area looks better if it happens to be bland. Another thing is the cockpits now look better than ever and look so much more realistic. I found a substancial improvement in aircraft quality over the 2004 edition. Water now looks like water and not like a someone has painted on some bland blue colour. The biggest change of all though is the new Mission style gameplay. These missions start of with tutorials that are not to difficult, but steadly become more challenging. I find its a great way for beginners too understand the concepts of flying in Flight simulator. Ever wondered what its like too fly a Jet when both engines have failed and then somehow land? One of harder later missions lets you just that. I really have become addicted to these missions because they are fun and challenging.Ofcourse Flight simulator still has its tradional side remaining intact if you don't fancy doing these missions. As before this edition includes virtual Flying lessons by Rod that help no end when Flying. Lessons although challenging at time have helped me specially with navigation. Learning to fly in Flight simulator does require patience, but it helps no end when you want to fly from and to your favourite locations.I can recommend Flight simulator X, but remember a Good PC is required if you want the simulator at its potential.

well i got this for xmas last year and i have since then logged 1,200 odd hours.the game is fantastic there are millions of addons that are really good i own f117 stealth fighter,787 dreamliner, and tiger moth.i have also getting the new accelaration expansion pack that is being released very very soon,im also getting the aircraft powerpack too.overall the game is fantastic it really is a fantastic game for £30 £40 pounds i would be willing to pay triple that for this.i play online almost everynite or through the day it is a game for all ages.although i have around 12 addons for 2004 onli 4 of them work im waiting for concorde to be upgraded and hopefully wont take much longer to patchthe things that i would recommend are atleast a (3ghz + processor 1gb ram)(or a dual core 2.66ghz)what i have in this computer with a (nvidia 8600 gts)really does benefit if you have a dual core processor.i have tried to play this game on a 2.2ghz machine and a (nvidia 126mb the graphics card was really old mind you)the (new 128mb graphics card work ok tho).my old graphics card on low detail took around 10minutes to load and planes were unflyabe game was jurky and took 40 secs atleast to change view.microsoft were a little missleading with minimum req'si have also played it on a 3.2 ghz (NOT DUAL CORE)pc with a ati radeon 128mb with an ok medium graphics and low medium traffic and gt a fairly 8 to 16 fps -frames per sec.i have played this on my friends 1.66ghz (DUAL CORE LAPTOP)and ati 128mb graphics card not sure what one and it was getting around 14 to 18.2 frames per sec.overall i hope this review has helped you decide on this game and is really a fantastic game and bit of software and is definetly the flight sim too buy.good luck and happy flying

FOR EVERYONEMicrosoft go mainstream with a sim aimed at "everyone". For those new to sims (and Microsoft hope many of you are) you will be in for a treat. But beware this treat comes with a big health warning.THE BIG HEALTH WARNINGThis application will not run as advertised with all the amazing visual effects unless you have a monster PC. The PC you got last year on the high street for £600 quid or the laptop you bring home from work will struggle, period. Your correspondent is running the latest dual core CPU and a trick graphic card on a £1400 laptop and I still have to turn the scenery (and everything else)down to get a decent frame rate and stop buildings from disappearing or turning luminous green.Professional writers and the flight sim forums are full of tips on what are the optimum settings to make it run better. Going to forums to figure out how to make their games run is not what the mainstream casual gamer are used too...ON BALANCEThis is the best sim money can buy and for the price it is a must have for hard core and thus money no object sim fans. But I feel a lot of casual gamers (the target market for this game) will be disapointed. The choice for these home gamers on less than awesome spec machines is a blurry unsharp image or a sharp as a tack vista that is jerky with the odd lime green building - both of these choices are unacceptable.Microsoft will sell a million of this product on marketing might alone, the media spend has been obscene - but they may be be about to alieanate their casual gamer target market for another 3 years by producing a product that won't run on their machines in an acceptable fashion. Buy it but have the hardware to run it.

This has got to be as close to the real thing as possible. I particularly like the sense of tension some of the missions have particularly when landing big jets. The co pilots voice asking you to put on landing lights etc., and the tannoy warning passengers to fasten seat belts really gives an eerie sensation of what it must be like at the front, not to mention the new `pull up, pull up' warning. The star of the show for me though is the glider which is a huge improvement on Flight Simulator 2004. I did some gliding many years ago and once had a pull behind a tow plane. All these years later, I finally got to find out why I was struggling to keep the glider straight whilst being towed - I should have flown above the tow plane's slip-stream!I have also learned loads about staying in thermals and how to spot them - makes me feel like going back to Lasham and doing it for real all over again; except that on Flight Sim X you don't have to hang around waiting to get up there! One caveat is that you need loads of horsepower in your PC and a really good graphics card. However, if you have that and can turn up the game resolution the graphics are stunning.I marked the game down one star because I have come across a few annoying bugs that mean some of the missions won't run and just drop you out of Sim X. Also a couple of the missions I was successful at doing never acknowledged my completion even though I parked next to the green finish pole (even though I am running the latest downloads). Never mind though, the whole thing still has me spellbound. With regards the supplier, the game turned up very quickly and was professionally packaged so I had no problems to report.

I decided that I'd have a go and see what flight simulator is like (being bored of shooters etc.) But what do you buy? I thought that Microsoft would make sense as you can add to it more or less whatever you like. However, I've red many reviews that unless you have a top spec machine, you would be disappointed. I was playing with the idea buying the 2004 instead of FSX. When you look at websites, magazines etc., time moves on and everything out there is about the FSX. So, I decided to go for FSX. And I was not disappointed! I have P4 3.4 GHz, 1GB of RAM, ATI X800XT card. No duo core, no top notch graphics card and average RAM. Ok, the graphics options are not all turned right up,but they are pretty high and the game looks good. Actually very good! It takes some time to install it, it takes ages to load the game, it takes some time to load the flight, but after that, it's fine.I'm not writing this review to tell you whether the game is good or not. You can read about that on websites that review flight sims. I'm here to tell you that if you have an average PC like me, you don't need to worry, the game will work fine. Perhaps all the hype that the game needs the latest hardware is before service pack 1 was out. I can't comment on that. I bought the game and installed the service pack before playing it.One matter to consider, I bought the Saitek X52 Pro Joystick. They are releasing a really nice yoke in a month or two. If you are going to fly commercial aircraft from Cessna to Boeing, I would wait for the yoke as most of the aircraft use one.

Microsoft's Flight Simulator X takes Microsoft's Flight Simulator series into a whole new level, featuring graphics and detail that can't be found on other flight simulators. This includes cars; boats and an animated living environment, making the gamer feel shrouded in the real world. Also the game gives you a variety of airplanes to choose from depending on the type of flight you want to make. Another new feature included in FSX are missions, which the player is able to work through. Each mission is different based on skill level and include missions from simply landing an ultra light, to rescuing workers off an oil rig, to landing a plane on a moving bus. This, unlike the previous Microsoft Flight Simulators actually gives you the sense of feeling that you're progressing throughout the game. However what a lot of people, and myself like about flight simulator is that there are no rules to follow you simply make up your own flight as you progress through the game and gather skill as a pilot. However one thing I have noticed is that you need a very powerful computer to actually get the program to work smoothly and to have it operating on a higher graphics setting. However FSX is definitely the next step in computer games especially with its graphics and also the online multiplayer application that lets you control air traffic, or fly and communicate with people from around the globe. Microsoft Flight Simulator X is fun and open to everybody experienced or novice alike.

This game gives you the ability to set up as anything from the usual commercial pilot flying airline routes through heavy traffic to a bush pilot in the African plains flying over herds of eliphants. The selection of aircraft is probably one of the best so far in its versatility. Graphic details are incredible, from forests of actual 3D trees and power lines to fully detailed city skylines, the Microsoft team have outdone themselves. There are even little speedboats on the sea. The virtual cockpit makes flying a lot easier and the cockpit details are immaculate. However, it is in the graphics that the game is flawed. I would definitely advise that you do your research before buying this game to make sure it is compatible with your PC.The specifications on my laptop exceed the system requirements of the game by a large margin, yet the FPS is appalling. In order to get a smooth flight movement I have to turn all the graphic settings down to their lowest and in so doing, lower the graphic quality to that of an older game - what is the point? This seems to be a relatively common problem and there isn't much to be done to fix it, especially if you have a laptop. So before buying, be sure to check out whether or not the game will run smoothly, and if it does, definitely a recommended buy.

The game is very simple and straight forward to install. It exceeded my expectations as it is very realistic. It has definitely helped me during my pilot training. The game is structured very well making everything clear and concise. The missions are structured well starting from beginner all the way to expert in order to build your skills gradually. In order to get the most out of this game it is best to follow the structure so take the pilot lessons as it will vastly increase your knowledge about the plane and all its instruments. Some missions do not give you much guidance so take your initiative here. You do need a medium to high spec pc in order to enjoy this game to its full potential however it will still work on a lower spec pc as the settings adjust automatically. The sound is immpressive and definitly use as headset as it is further enhanced (it almost feels as though your stood on the airfield!).Beginners may find it difficult at first to control the aircraft but dont give up just practise and you'll be flying like a co-pilot in no time!I highly recommend this game as it is very realistic and is packed with tons of features. Btw dont forget to take those pilot lessons in the game otherwise you'll be regreting it as your plane is falling 30,000 feet into the sea!

Flight simulator has always pushed hardware requirements to the max and X is no exception. Initial press releases suggested the launch would tie in with the new windows operating system Vista. Delays with that have resulted in a little back tracking by Microsoft with statements suggesting X was always intended for XP, but with Vista compatibility. With the problems I have running X I wonder if this is the whole story. My machine is a 2.8ghz, ATI 9800 256 and I run Century of flight with sliders maxed out, add on ground textures, traffic 05 and easily get 40fps.I've struggled to get near 6 fps with X and at present it dosen't feel the new elements in the simulation are justifying these massivehits to frame rate.I've bought my copy and I'm excited about what the future of home flight simulation holds. X is an amazing piece of software with so much potential, the visual content give CAE and Frasca a run for their money, the Microsoft flight sim team have aimed high and delivered. It will be interesting to see what Vista brings to the party and when I get my hands on a machine to run it I'll return to write another review and no doubt be giving it 6 stars but for now I own the software but not the hardware.

The best just got better.I thought FS2004 was good but FSX is trullya ground breaking game.I've heard a lot of people slating FSX and thatits needs a top spec computer to run it onbut thats not true.I've got a four year old computer and even with some of thesettings turned down this game is amazing! Sure you're not gonna get the most out of the game but it's still a lot of fun whatever system you've running.Tha graphics are superb, Variety of aircraft is varied and the differentmissions available make this game a must have for any flight sim fan.My current favourite is the DG808 glider. Getting a toe up to 6000 feetand using thermals to gain altitude is an amazing experience. Also Tryingto complete the Red Bull air race course is really difficult but rewarding. In addition to all this clouds, winds, snow and rain are perfectly recreated to make that challenge of flight all the more interesting. So in short this game can be adjusted to suit your computerso don't listen to those reviews who say you need a top Spec PC.I'm glad I bought it anyway and think its fantastic and hopeto upgrade my system soon to fully realise the full potentialof what is the best Flight Sim out there.

This represents an incredible bargain. Thousands of people all around the globe have enjoyed thousands of hours of fun, challenges and learning with this masterpiece.I have real world flying (as a pilot...) experience and this program does a great job. The worth successor of Flight Simulator 2004, this takes the subject to a new level in style. The missions are a new feature that have proven very popular and are a great way to get people involved as they have a goal, rather than just flying around. There can still be issues problems setting the options to "maximum" on a 2012 PC, even though it was published in 2006. The programmers aimed very high. Nevertheless, you can still have realistic clouds and weather, great looking airports and terrain, nice aircraft glistening in the sun, rippling water, etc. As always , you choose the level of detail you want with the features and so, for example, if you reduce the amount of air traffic flying around, or cars moving on the streets, this will help the ever important "frames per second" which determines whether you feel like you are flying... or watching an old movie... or watching a slide show...!I usually use mine with a few add-ons such as:
