First of all, I'll give this game 5 stars, as it's a big step up from FS2004, HOWEVER, there is some information that you won't have probably read, which will require your thoughts as to whether to purchase this version or, not, particularly for Windows XP users. This FSX expansion pack contains DirectX 10, directly marketed towards Windows Vista and Windows 7 users (which uses DirectX 11), users of Windows XP only utilise DirectX 9.Quite a few creators use DirectX 10 mode exclusively now, many people do not, however, many older aircraft do not render properly in Preview DirectX 10 mode even though those aircraft are indicated as being for FSX. Unless an aircraft is a true native FSX model, running in DirectX 10 mode can mean invisible textures or black or grey textures where there should be detailed colour. Many people with DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 systems alternate between running FSX in Preview DirectX 10 mode and DirectX 9, so that they can continue to use their older non-DirectX-10-compliant aircraft, scenery and other content. The problem I see with doing that is that the optimal FSX graphics settings for DirectX 9 and Preview DirectX 10 modes are quite different. Hence, each time a change is made between running FSX in DirectX 9 or Preview DirectX 10 mode, optimal results can only be achieved by loading a saved file of appropriate graphics settings. So I stick with Preview DirectX 10 mode. I prefer what I see in DirectX 10 mode even though I can no longer use and see those non-DirectX-10-compatible aircraft. To me, DirectX 10 mode is that much better as it is a fresher concept from Microsoft than DirectX 9.Additionally, new FSX aircraft released by major commercial developers (as well as some FSX aircraft released by freeware creators) may include DirectX-10-mode graphics features that CANNOT be experienced by users who remain with DirectX 9. You can't take advantage of DirectX 10's new features (even the degree to which the features are implemented in FSX's Preview DirectX 10 mode) without DirectX 10 (or 11). Any aircraft that is Preview-DirectX-10-compliant can only use and benefit from Preview DirectX 10's speed if DirectX 10 (or 11) is installed, subsequently, Windows XP users will have to turn off the DirectX 10 option in this game after installing it, BUT, won't be able to obtain the full viewing effects if you purchase new or freely download recently built content. This information is not widely known outside of the Flight Sim community, you make your choice accordingly. It is also worth mentioning that the FSX-Gold edition uses DirectX 10 exclusively, I am personally unsure if it contains an option to turn it off, or, not, subsequently, users of Windows XP may be unable to play that version.

I too was surprised to see Acceleration failing to install telling me I didn't have the English version of FSX (I did).It turns out that if you've moved your installation of FSX around your machine trying to get better performance out of it (I had) then the registry settings can get out of sync. There's a simple free fix program for this on the Flight1 downloads page.Once you're past that point, Acceleration then insists that you unload FSX SP2 if you've already got it installed(!) before it will continue. This is fine if your windows PC isn't suffering from the common 'Please wait' bug in the 'Add or Remove program'dialog box which means you can be waiting for 10 minutes+ before the screen populates (mine permanently sticks).Although I couldn't find a fix for this on the Web , there is an alternative program called SAFARP you can use instead which works fine and it's free: Do a search for 'SAFARP download'. Plenty of positive reviews exist. So, after you've done that, Acceleration loads fine and it's worth it just for the F18 hornet and the opportunity to try carrier launches and landings.FSX and Aceleration are both mind-bogglingly complex programs and it really is worth the wait if you have the patience to see the load process through.I've also seen another reviewer say they had problems with the game and an NVIDIA card: Ive got an 8800GT and I haven't experienced any problems with it at all.So, hope this helps somebody.Hope you enjoy it!

I have had many issues with FSX- when it came out I had what was then a medium spec PC... and promptly uninstalled it! I eventually got a new graphics card which helped, and finally ran it a a decent speed. I recently invested in a new PC- spening about £400 on it (as of July 2008), and I felt willing to try FSX acceleration despite the problems people have had. I was very surprised that it not only ran at a good framerate, but did so with the graphics sliders at the high or very high setting for everything. The graphics are stunning!!As for the pack itself, it adds three very different aircraft to FSX and many many missions. All the aircraft present a new challenge. Air racing is fast paced and very tricky, landing on a carrier is more difficult (and I imagine more realistic) than on any other simulation that I've tried, and the Heli missions (particuarly the ones where you have to haul loads under the helicopter) take the biscuit! Despite the challenge, they are without exception great fun.FSX has always had performance issues, but a reasonably new PC with a decent graphics card seems to be working for me. If you can get FSX to run at a decent framerate, this will definatly add to the experience and is worth buying.

I truly feel that the Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS) brand has been surpassed by various other sims these days. But I give this product 5 stars based not only on this product, but on the MSFS series as a whole.I began using MSFS in 2002, and got hooked straight away. I owned every version since 2002 and was firmly addicted to it for years. Each new release had so much more to offer than the previous version, with plenty of additional content - both official and unofficial - to get your aviator teeth into. These days, I never use it. Not because it's bad. Far from it in fact. But because I have specific interests in flight simulation which have led me to other titles instead.I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone interested in flight simulation though, especially if you're just starting out. My only criticism is that Microsoft never truly optimised the flight sim titles, so you might find yourself struggling to run this on high settings even on a beefy machine. That said, it doesn't detract anything from the enjoyment of this title. Play with the settings and see what works for you. There are plenty of helpful tips in online forums if you get stuck.Happy flying!

I found this product to work great too. The missions are also a lot of fun. Admittidly I find it hard to optimize upto about 25 fps (although I do average 20 at the best of times), but MS are working on patches etc. Accleration also includes service pack 2, which makes further frame rate improvements.Performance wise, it varies heavily from computer to computer, if you are using vista, the directx 10 option changes the way graphics are loaded and (should) give minor improvements, (MS say about 10%)The trouble with FSX is that it was released ahead of its time, with most users unable to meet requirements, but MS couldn't win since if they left the gap between the next version too long people would moan then too. Also due to the resources required, spyware etc on the computer can cause HUGE drag. For Ref, my Specs are;(Laptop), Windows Vista, 2GB RAM, 100GB HD (40-60 Partition Split), AMD Dual Core 1.8Mhz, 512 MB ATI Catalyst Graphics

I don't have any of the problems with the Acceleration pack that the other reviewers describe. I can't help doubting the hardware they are using. The opposite really; the missions mostly work well, but best of all is that the game runs smoother than before- probably due to the inclusion of the service pack SP2. Racing is a tremendous addition to the game. For me though, the SDK is the best part, modding the game is often more fun than "normal play". Even with the rather fiddly proceedures involved in making scenery, custom buildings and changing the landscape, the satisfaction of making and sharing mods makes up for it.There is an enormous network of support sites and highly skilled techies out there that are willing to help got you started.______________________________________________For reference: PIV E6600, 2Gb DDRII RAM, GF8800 GTS 640MB graphics. 24" Dell screen. This Sim really does need the newest computers to run well!

Overall I think this expansion pack represents reasonable value for money. I had no problems with installation. For me, the star of the show is the Boeing F-18 Hornet, subject to the slight criticism that no detailed explanation is given of how to operate many of the cockpit features. (These differ significantly from those found on most civil aircraft.) The user will need to access external sources to find this information. In contrast to the excellent F-18 cockpit and panel, the one supplied for the Eurocopter is very poor indeed, and that leads me to deduct one star from my overall rating. Finally, those with an interest in classic propliners will wish to note that this pack makes available code which add-on developers may use to produce fully simulated turbo and superchargers. This latter feature is not available via the free Service Pack 2. All in all, I consider this a worthwhile package.

It's not the extra aircraft and missions that make this add-on desirable. It is the update to FSX, which fixes many problems with the original, and adds features such as controllable turbo chargers, and Direct X 10 support. While DX10 support won't work so well with models made for DX9, it significantly increases framerates. I tested the DX10 interfaces at a heavy add-on airport, Manchester Xtreme, with my heaviest add-on model, PMDG 737NGX. With DX9 I was getting 6-9 fps, with DX10, this increased to 11-14. That is very siginficant. Normally, I have no problem getting 20fps with DX10 enabled.Acceleration also includes an updated SDK, which is a great platform for developerss.Buying this add-on will keep FSX alive at least until 2015 - may be longer. Therefore I'm recommending this add-on for existing FSX users 100%. Snap it up!

The Flight simulator Acceleration Expansion is very good,.The only thing I find that some games are missing ie, Flight Amsterdam to Heathrow,is a hard one but missing on some Acceleration disks ,you push back then taxi to rinway take off then as you are climbing to cruise height at 12.000 ft the air hostess says you have a passenger on board with a heart attack you then have to re route to another airport ,this is in pouring rain thunder and some dense cloud ,not easy but good practice unless the game is difficult you lose intersest then you are at 2.000 ft and the cloud clears and you find you are not lined up with the runway so you have to go round and try again a really good game,I have landed on the Aircraft Carrier once.after a year of trying

I've used Microsoft Flight Simulator products since 1997 and in my experience, FSX with this acceleration pack is excellent. The best features for me are the virtual cockpits and the smooth graphics brought out by the acceleration pack.Performance will depend on the specification of your PC, but here's what I use.* PC = Packard Bell iStart D2314 (ECS Micro ATX Denver 10 motherboard)* Processor = Intel Pentium E2160 dual core processor 2x 180 GHz* RAM: 2 GB* OS = Microsoft Vista Home Premium 32 bitI made two essential upgrades, as follows:* Upgraded power supply unit = 450W (see what's required by the graphics card)* Graphics card = Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 3650 512MB DDR2 PCI-E

I placed my order on FSX Acceleration on Wed 08th July 13, item arrived on Friday the 5th (Digitalville UK). Item was as described, new in the packaging, containing the installation code and game documents. Game installed correctly, the code worked, there was no problem with existing add on aircraft. Acceleration just installed, the code was entered on FSX start up, the initial loading of the new files took place and then I was away. I am having great fun with the carrier ops and air races and look forward to installing more aircraft to use with these features. The best order and product I have experienced so far!

All i can say is amazing!!! i have had all the flight sims in the past and decided to try this one, even though its old it still is the best and market leader, i had no problems installing and running it unlike other ones i have purchased! Its something you can add to and keep adding too, you can tailor it to your own preference, its a must for flight simmers; but i have heard that the new game in the line called "Flight" is just based around arcade sims so this may be the last in the line of a true simulators!!!!Recommended, and a must buy.HB

I bought this not being sure if it would work or install correctly; After reading the other reviews, it came in 2 days which was quick for free postage. I installed it and it installed fine however it said i needed to activate it so i did but flight simulator could not connect to the internet, so it said activte later meaning and basically the trial version. So i called the free phone number (UK not sure about other countries) and activated it very easily and went on to the f18 and well you can probably guess the rest.

I was a bit concerned about the mixed reviews and my concerns were heightened when it aborted loading and told me to remove the installed Service Packs. I had a check on Google and then did as I was asked. It then loaded without problem (on Vista on a newish, mid-range machine)and has made a big difference to performance. And, the additional aircraft and missions have been much enjoyed by my son.
