I picked this game up because I had played EU2 several years ago, and enjoyed it.This incarnation is even better. While the graphics aren't stunning, I find the level of detail spot on for this time of game - seems like a very detailed risk map. Some people have complained at this title not being as historically accurate as EU2.I personally have found this a bit of plus so far - in EU2, a couple of times some historical events came along that just didn't make sense in the context of the game you were playing - you could ending up losing whole countries just because the game engine hit a certain year. This game gives you more of a feeling of being a real master of your own destiny.Trying to negotiate alliances/marriages, but at the same time manoeuvring to try isolate small countries who are ripe for annexation is a great challenge. And I really like the realism part of the game too - you can't just conquer things as and when you feel like it. Provinces you conquer won't be considered yours for 50 years (which is a long time in the game!), and conquering provinces with different culture or religion gives you a whole heap of revolt problems. And if you take too many, you tarnish your reputation - if it gets too bad, you'll find that the other powers will start ganging up to slap you down. So you really have to pick your battles. The only minor point is that you sometimes have to be quite patient - sometimes you just don't have the resources to do very much, and you have to sit around for a bit. But usually this comes after a tough war, and the change of pace is good - plus you can crank up the game speed, so it isn't too bad.In summary, a brilliantly complex game that rewards time put into it - I'm constantly discovering new features and challenges that make it really enjoyable.

This is basically a sound game. The strategy possibilities are almost endless; especially as you can play as any of the hundreds of nations in the game, and start at anytime from 1453 until the 1780's. It's really refreshing to start a game as leader of some really out of the way little nation (like Okinawa!) - okay you're not gonna conquer the world but it's quite good fun just to survive and prosper when you're tiny and insignificant! Also every nation gets a chance to get out and grab a colony or two as well. One bit of advice; if you're a beginner don't start with a nation that's already at war - you'll get mangled like I did,and in accelerated time too!My only gripe with EU3 is the representation of armies and the combat system - basically there aren't any! It's a shame that the designers couldn't have produced some proper unit cards like you always get, showing an artistic rendering of what all those exotic troop types actually looked like. Currently it's just a bland sentence saying "Latin Cavalry" or whatever, with a TINY portrait which it's impossible to tell of what - could be David Beckham on a horse! Proper unit information cards (like in the TW series) would have made it really top notch, even with automated battles. This doesn't detract too much from the enjoyment of the game though, it's been well planned and I especially liked the flexibilty and replayability. Good value.

That is a great game. Not difficult to learn (provided you are willing to read the 150 pages manual and that you have a previous experience in other grand strategy games such as Civilization) but certainly difficult to master.I think it is worth noting here that, although other games of this genre, such as the aforementioned Civilization, are turn based, Europa Universalis III is a real time strategy game. I think it is a good choice, since the real time makes it more dynamic. You can choose the rate at which days pass by (usually quick during times of peace, slow during wars) and of course you can pause it whenever you want. The depth of the game, the amount of variables that you can control and the extent of their effects make it a game that you will probably be playing for a long time, even if you take a break from time to time to play other games. In short, if you like this kind of games, you should definitely give it a try. There is a demo available online. Bear in mind though, that as I said before, it might be an overwhelming experience if you do not read the manual first.

This game is of a mind blowing quality. The detail and possability is truly endless. If you get board ruling the world with one nation, which in ti's self is an incredible chalenge, you can just play as a different country. As a personal recomendation i would say that new players should start off playing as France, England, Burgandy, Spain or Russia. The Ottomans are also good but always end up at war with Russia. As a new player to the EU games i found it impossible to get started without reading through the tutorials. As a visualy impared gamer the lack of speach was a chalenge and after making my eyes sore trying to read them for nearly 20 minutes I had to ask my mother to read them to me.Once I had read the tutorials I found the game very enjoyable and farly detailed. My personal favourite faction is the Netherlands, which can be created a a vassel of Burgandy or from the early 16th century. All in all a fabulis game well worth more than twice what it is toing for an Amazon.

The Europa Univeralis series is the Great Mother of all world-historical games. Play as one of hundreds of countries across the globe, from the mid-15th to early 19th centuries - including European, African, Asian, and New World cultures. There are lengthier reviews out there for those interested in researching the title, so all I would say is:1. If you like history, and you like complex but well designed strategy games, you'll love this.2. If you have broadband, download it from gamersgate.com rather than buying the CD version - much easier and more convenient. My only criticisms are that the new 3D map could be prettier, and also the game is SLOW unless you have a top-range PC - it works great on my new dual-core 4 gig PC,but its almost unplayably slow on my not-too-old Pentium 4 with 1 gig of memory. In short, you'll really enjoy it, but say goodbye to early night and time with your significant other for a while!

I am a great fan of any Paradox game, I am a 20 year old self proclaimed nerd and history nut, whenever I install this game I find myself glued for a good while. EU III begins in 1453, everything at this time is as historically accurate as the programmers could achieve (personally impressed).EU III is essentially HOI III set 600 years prior, I love playing and editing these games with a little knowledge and research you can create yourself as a famous general or create a country in your own name.If you are browsing for an educational game this may be the one, you will undoubtedly learn about nations across the historical globe if you buy this product.Definitely recommended to all nerds andhistory nuts.

Whilst very similar to EU2 in most respects it adds a significant layer of stratagy to the game. If you enjoyed EU2 then this is a definate improvement. However without the map creation tools of EU2 then it does have limmited scope for replay, especially if the particular country you wish to play is missing.

Europa Unoversalis 3 is a strategy game where you take a country and lead them to victory. The western cultral group is the best, the worst is the Native Indian (Aztects,Incas).I recomenned it to any strategy gamers.I love EU3.
