I first came across the idea of ‘gender neutral’ dolls on a doll forum when I was researching and this led me to the Creatable World range on Amazon. I wanted to buy something different to amuse my eight year old granddaughter when her mother, my daughter, went into labour with the new baby, so decided these would be ideal.I bought two kits – GGG53 with copper straight hair and GGG5 with black straight hair, as these were the two that appealed to me the most out of the range (I think there are five in the range at present). I also found the GGG56 character (dark blonde curly) online secondhand (nude) and bought that one too. I didn’t think that one doll (or character)was enough to make a good game.So when the time came I took the new boxes to my granddaughter to see what she made of them. You lift the lids and there are the dolls packed nicely with their clothes into the moulded clear plastic.. You just take the dolls and items out, and ready to play straight away – no cutting off awkward plastic ties. (Then when you have finished the doll and the items all go back into the same place – very neat). My granddaughter took the lids off – her eyes swept the boxes – and she said ‘Oh I get it – they are boys, but they are girls too!’. We got everything out and she immediately slammed on the dolls’ wigs making them (in her opinion) into ‘girls’. We dressed them up but she didn’t play with them as such, at first.I give these dolls the thumbs up for quality and durability. They are jointed at elbows, wrists, knees and ankles making them very poseable. The clothes are varied, fit well and very well made . Each kit comes with three pairs of shoes and other items like bags, glasses. At a later stage, I tried a few Barbie clothes on these dolls – some items iike skirts, shorts etc will be ok and even some dresses. After a while, my ten year old grandson drifted in. I asked him if he would like to ‘create a character’ (I deliberately didn’t say ‘play with these dolls’) but was still quite surprised when he did. He took over GGG56 and left him with short hair and dressed him up (he said) as a rock star. Then we all played a department store game with the characters buying clothes and interacting with each other. My granddaughter gave each character two names – a typical girls name and a typical boys name.I asked my granddaughter if she was rating the kits out of five stars what would she give them – she said four because she felt there could be more clothes. I thought for the money they were good value. Since I bought (before Xmas ’19) the price has dropped which makes me wonder if these dolls are not selling as well as Mattel thought they would. I see that some people are buying the kits, splitting them up and selling the pieces individually as buy it now or auction online. This would be an extremely expensive way to acquire these dolls and if you are thinking of buying, I would suggest it would be far better to buy a full kit, brand new. The wigs are not really interchangeable between the dolls as their fringe, or front bit of hair, is always showing (unless you like a two-tone colour look!). I also didn’t think the wigs fitted as well as they should (though not too bad). Another review I read said that they would’ve preferred the dolls to be bald, with different wigs – I think that would’ve been my best choice too.I liked these dolls, my granddaughter did too – but when all’s said and done, they are just nice little dress-up dolls with pre-teen bodies .

The "Creatable World" Deluxe Character Kit DC-220 is, on the face of it, a traditional doll with a variety of accompanying apparel in which to clothe it.Inside of the somewhat mundane looking box measuring in at 12.5" x 15" x 2.25" (32cm x 38cm x 6cm), there is a decent variation in the 12 different items of clothing and accessories provided, which include multiple tops and jeans, skirt, three items of footwear a pair of dungarees, a hat, strap bag, sunglasses and long haired wig. I should point out that the long hair wig does not actually replace the existing short hair on the doll, which is non-removable - the wig is simply placed over the existing short hair.Mixing and matching thus enables an impressive number of different appearances with the different outfit combinations. The clothes are bright and of contemporary style, offer a nice varied selection and are well-made. The hoodie even has a functional zipper, and the overalls have real pockets. The contents also include a mini-poster with images of the doll in some of it's outfit; the picture is in fact the same image as used on the cover of the box, but shown in its entirety. It's a nice little extra, nothing more. The doll itself measures up at 11 inches (28cm) in height and while on the face of it appearing to be a standard traditional doll, does in fact have a rather novel and far from traditional aspect: This is a gender neutral doll - with the short hair and clothed in a particular style it has the appearance of a male, but with other clothing and perhaps the long haired wig, it will be female. The choice is entirely up to whoever is playing with the doll.Similarly, the skin tone and facial features of the doll allow it to represent varied ethnicity - European, mixed race, Asian, ME origins can all be reasonably ascribed to the the figure. While I appreciate this will not be a significant factor for many people, anything or one that a child can personally identify with will naturally hold greater appeal and provides more scope for the imagination of a developing child. These features are done very subtly, there is nothing blatant or heavy-handed about it, but personally I think it's great to have a doll on the market that a child can endow with whatever gender and ethnicity their imagination desires.I have no great experience in the field of purchasing dolls so I don't know what may be considered a reasonable price but I would regard a price nearer to £20 than the asking price of £28 as about right.Having said that, It is the case that one is getting both a "Ken" and a "Barbie" in this one doll and with the clever design it offers a much wider variety of options for a child to create their own unique characters straight out of the box.

So right up front I like the aim here - 'A doll line designed to keep labels out and invite everyone in!' - I think it is great to have a doll that all kids can play with, as I have seen over and over that boys like to play with dolls too, and it's not helpful for any kid to have stereotypical views of femininity forced on them.My first thought on opening this up was that it is brilliant from an inclusivity perspective in my view - it's great to see a doll for little kids that is not gussied up to look like it has had all the plastic surgery available, great to see a doll that allows for kids to dress up in skirts / trousers etc and is in essence androgynous. The range also has dolls from different heritages, and a redhead (As a ginger I would have loved to have a ginger doll!)... so much more representative than lots of dolls.I loved the presentation - the box is good quality and opens to reveal the doll and accessories enclosed in a box with a plastic cover. There is some real care here in the delivery I think. I like the range of clothes, shoes and accessories too and I am really impressed with the quality of the fabrics and the construction. They are really perfect - with great openings, like fine velcro strips all the way down the back of the tops, a working zip... even the shoes have slits in the back making them easy to put on. I think a small child could dress this doll on their own.The doll itself is great. It is very jointed and therefore very pose-able. It will sit up alone and can also stand alone if positioned carefully.A couple of things that I think could be developed. I think they could extend the range to include a South Asian looking doll, and to include differently able kids in their representation. Secondly - the long hair wig just wouldn't fit right. It's kind of like a helmet and you can see the gap between the head and the wig... Maybe a soft rubber would work better? As a kid I would have just chucked the long hair away because of this. In general I don't think this doll does girly as well as it does boyish or non gendered. As a kid I was all of these things sometimes...All up though - this is a lovely doll and I applaud the intent - which is very nearly perfectly achieved I think. A doll to encourage creativity I think. Very good price too.

This is a novelty to us – a doll that aims to be whatever character you want. This set comes with one dell, 12 mix and match clothing items, and two lots of hair. Yes, the hair is changeable! The doll has a gender neutral face, which amazingly works well for girly and guy things. This makes the doll a world away from things lime Barbie, which are very definitely female. The things is though, that in play we found the grandchildren just assume male or female roles for the doll. One of the really great things about this doll is that it is mostly anatomically correct. By that we mean that the limbs are in correct proportion with the body. The limbs are also very poseable! We tried lots of ballet poses, which can be impossible for a doll, but this one was fine with them. This is partly because the hip and shoulder joints are universal, not just forward and backward like a teddy bear. The hands have movable wrist joints too, which is even better. It sits nicely, and stands up too. Great! As an side here, we tried this doll out as a studio mannequin (we run a classical figure-painting studio), for designing figure-painting composition, and found it worked really well. Given that professional mannequins at this size usually cost upward of £100, this one is a bargain! It just needs a more realistic head to make it perfect for this purpose.Okay, so back to the grandchildren. They really liked this doll, and warmed to it immediately. It goes along with Barbie dolls quite well, and we reckon it’s nicer than the plastic-haired Ken doll.

We have dolls on our house as well as action figures. We allow our kids to play with whatever they like no matter the gender stereotyping. Mattel have made this idea a little more official by creating a doll that could be anything you want it to be. But as any sensible person realises - a doll is a doll and kids should be able to play with what they like.If your child is into dolls and dress up, then they will enjoy the blonde 'Creative World' doll. The figure is androgynous, but I have come across many dolls like that before. I would be more worried about a kid’s toy that was too obvious about gender. The best element of this doll is the variety of items that you can affix; from clothes and shoes,to a wig. They look good and it is fun changing the outfits, but the wig does fit a little funny. The short haired version of the doll does look better. With all the accessories on offer, you are best getting another doll or two in the range, that way you can swap outfits and hair across them. Children will just enjoy playing with them because it is fun.

As an 18 year old who still has an interest in dolls and stuff, I am very satisfied with this product. This is a fully posable doll that can be identified as any gender. The accessories that came with it also function really well, so well you can actually fit something like a single key or a little USB into the brown backpack.I am so far having loads of fun with Spinel (yes I've decided she's a badass short-haired girl and yes she's been named) and I am planning to buy clothes that fit 30cm Mattel dolls to extend her wardrobe a bit. Clothes is definitely something I would recommend investing on if you are someone like me who likes to dig deep into the fashion side.As mentioned above I have ignored the wig.It does not look like it's gonna fit on, so what I would suggest is that either go get yourself some blue tack and stick the wig on (I never tried it so don't shout at me if it doesn't stay on), or just leave it like what I did with Spinel.I spent around £30 on this and I would say it is worth the spend.

I am so happy to have stumbled on this range of dolls for my son who is now 4. I was getting increasingly annoyed that I only seemed to be able to find either really girly Barbie type dolls, or action man/super hero figures (and ultimately giving my little boy a middle aged action man figure dressed as a soldier to play with feels a bit weird to me?!) The creatable world dolls seem much more age appropriate, little one gets to play around with different characters and make some (in my view) fairly shocking fashion choices, and if I had a daughter I would like the fact that these dolls encourage more diversity in terms of gender neutral interests. The long braided wig does not stay on well, but the short hair style is really cool and more than makes up for it IMO.The joints work perfectly and I’m impressed we can pose the figure and they’ll stay in place. All round, really good value for money, only downsides are the long hair that won’t stay and that personally I would like some more clothes for our character!!

So glad I finally ordered one of these! I had been put off by the price tag but this one was reduced so I went for it (and luckily it was the one I wanted most which was a bonus) and I’m so glad I did! I love the way they are packaged. No horrible plastic ties, the doll and clothes can just be lifted out the tray. The doll itself is great, nice size and quality and the articulation is brilliant. The face paint is really nice and the hair is lovely and soft. The clothes re amazing, such good quality for fashion doll clothes! The jacket even has a real working zipper. I had loads of fun trying different outfit combinations. The wig works really well on this particular doll too.I’ve seen videos of some of the others and the wigs look a little odd on some as you can see the band, but because this doll has lovely curly hair, it’s concealed quite well. Now I’ve seen one of these dolls in real life, I’d have no issues paying the full price for them as it honestly is wonderful and worth it for the quality.

This is a great idea, executed well but not in a way that stands out as the sort of thing you'd rave about to friends or recommend without reservation. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to think about why there's a place for a doll like this in the world. There's nothing to criticise about the concept of a doll created specifically to mix and match different clothing types and styles. My eight-year-old daughter is happy enough to play with this set and enjoys the freedom, but it isn't a revelation for her and I don't think it will replace any of her existing dolls. There's definitely something in the notion that children want to see themselves represented in the films that they watch and the toys they play with,so hopefully this will fit that niche for some children in the world. If not, it's also true that conventional Barbies present an unrealistic body image for girls growing up, so some parents will probably feel more comfortable with a set like this than a classic Barbie!

This is a gender-neutral doll for kids. Do I agree with gender neutrality in toys? Sort of. Kids need to learn about and feel comfortable with modern genders within our society. They don’t need to have it pushed on them though. Thankfully, this doll doesn’t do that. So, this is a dress up doll that’s around 11” tall and comes with a variety of clothing and accessories. The quality of the doll and the accessories are high. The clothes in particular are well-made with genuine materials being used. Miniature zips, buttons and elastic as well. All carefully stitched together. The asking price seems little high in my opinion but you are paying for quality. If you compare the price against action man or Sindy dolls and their accessories, the price is actually quite fair.Overall, a nice dress up doll set for any child.

This is a great doll for creative young children who want to dress their doll as they would dress themselves. Girls don't always wear frilly dresses and low slung tops like the impossibly perfect Barbie world, and observing our six-year-old playing with this doll, she mostly uses the shorts, leggings and tops – pretty much how real kiddies dress. The doll itself has a short hair-do and a fairly flattened body. Its middle is soft and its limbs are plastic and jointed at the elbows, knees and ankle. There is an attachable long hair-piece to make the doll look positively feminine, and several outfits of shorts, leggings, skirt, short and long sleeved tops, and a jacket. In addition, there are three pairs of shoes, glasses and a hat. All can be mixed and matched for the look your child wants to make.

This doll is a similar kind of size to a Barbie doll and it comes with short curly blondish hair and a set of clothes - T-shirt and shorts. From this base, you can dress her up with a number of different tops and bottom combinations and there is even a long hair wig to change her look. The doll comes in a large flat box with all the clothes laid out so you can see them. You also get a card sheet with suggested options for how to combine the clothes and have short/long hair.I am sure any child who likes dressing dolls and doing their hair would love this set but it is quite expensive at £ 30. I plan on giving this to my Homestart (charity )family's daughter for Christmas as they don't have very much and I am sure she will love it.

I am so glad I stumbled across this series of toys!My 6 yo has been nagging me for ages about wanting to customise her own dolls, like she sees in various YouTube toy videos... even going so far as to take the waterproof paints to a couple of her LOL dolls :-SThis set gives her the opportunity to mix and match clothes and hairstyles, but without permanently and irreversibly ruining the toy (see watercolour paints above!).The clothes and wig in the box are of good quality and variety, but I definitely think that the best value here is to get a couple of these doll sets for greater mix'n'match potential. My only reservation is the price,as they cost quite a bit more than your average Barbie-type doll plus accessories set.

Am very glad there is finally a doll that match me.The accessories are great, the makeup of the doll is neat, any doll lover will be happy with this purchase. The only thing I am dissapointed with is the hair; the short ones are more like a shapeless bob haircut than advertised in the pictures, I had to cut it myself for it to be decent and the long ones are a cap you put on the short ones (that you can't remove).. I would have liked to be able to take both out off the head for more inclusivity and possibility of customisation (swapping wigs between dolls) and the cap to not be this showy under the hair.It is to work on,but the doll is already a great thing like that,I recommend buying it for the dolls lovers of your life!
