First of all, this is not your average city builder. Cities XL is an MMO.What does that mean? Well, like other genres (RPG, FPS, etc.), you can play it online, with thousands of other players at the same time. This feature alone makes it a lot more fun and realistic. You're not in Kansas anymore...you're thrown out into the harsh reality. Also, you have to trade with other cities in order to expand your city. This feature allows the player to decide what kind of city he wants. Want to build an industrial metropolis? Sure, as long as you import enough food for your population. Got a barren desert filled with oil? No worries, just use part of your trading income to buy heavy industry. But what if you just want peace and quiet in your high-end luxurious resort? Sell your holiday rooms and you'll be fine. As long as your income is above 0, you can make your city whatever you like.Ten-twenty years ago this concept would have failed. These days, the MMO industry is booming, so a multiplayer city builder is the logical step forward for the genre. The game is not brilliant - yet. That's the advantage of playing an MMO: it's constantly improving. WOW, in it's first year, was a good game, but not even close to what it is at present. It grew, it evolved, it learned from it's past mistakes. And that is exactly where Cities XL is heading. As long as the game has people playing it, Monte Cristo will improve it. That's the beauty of playing an MMO. As long as you want something in a game you're paying for (8 Euros a month, that's just a few beers/bottle of cheap wine), there will be someone trying to make it happen.OK, but why should i buy it? The subscription is less than a good pizza. Unless you're totally anti-social, it'll be fun playing with others, trading, competing, exchanging ideas and suggestions, even helping out noobs, if you're a carebear. You'll always change your city. As your city grows, you'll unlock more and better buildings, homes, roads, etc. Only one person can be number one, everyone else will have something to improve. The examples are endless, you'll see. But you'll never have to worry about not having anything to do.Right, then why not 5 stars, review author? Well, the game still has some bugs. The trading system is not so stable, there are some bugs, uploading your city takes a bit more than it should, there is no real huge terraforming tool, and so on. It's not perfect, unfortunately. But that's just a matter of time, like with every other game out there. All in all, the game is nice, with a bright looking future ahead. Buy the game, subscribe to the planet offer, play, trade, compete, show off, involve yourself in the gaming community and generally just have fun with thousands of players. If you're not looking just for high-end graphics, limited gameplay/design freedom, or a perfect, bug free game, there's a good chance you'll enjoy Cities XL.Best regards

If you are a WoW fanboy or whatever then this is not the game for you, and I am sure Monte Cristo realised this when putting it together. This, like a few other `grown up' MMO's takes time to master just like certain other city builders. I enjoyed building my city up and then I enjoyed the panic of realising I had made a stupid mistake and watching my populace leave in droves as I had skinned my city by putting too many amenities in all at once. So it does have a steep learning curve and is not like other MMOs where you go out collect 10 mushrooms to make soup. The graphics are nice, however a few more controls over them would be nice such as shadow control, my PC is well capable of playing even at the highest setting, but to make it smoother (same with any game) I tend to remove shadows. There are currently plenty of buildings and close up they are really well drawn, however maybe a bit too much space between some areas, so some `gap filler' would be nice (childrens park type filler). Now from what I understand the Mass Transit will be released as GEMS, these would be nice if once purchased could be included in solo mode, im sure at some point in the future this will be possible.Personally I enjoyed it, and I will be playing online (although a 100% player driven economy would be great). I played Sim City way back in the early 90s (probably from release (1989? 1990?) and all the way to Sim City 4 (im not going to mention the other one...)) and this is a good step in the right direction, give Monte Cristo time, and im sure they will spoon and drip feed us a good down to earth City Simulator!

As people seem to be trashing this game, I thought I'd give an alternative view. I actually like this game. The graphics are nice and the ability to build large and varied cities is a welcome change to the city building games that have come before. You can also place the exact type of building you want giving you vast control over how your city looks. As for people referring to WoW I'll say one thing. This game is an online city builder whilst WoW is a rpg the only thing in common is they are both online, so ignore any comments people make in regard to WoW being better!Basically if you enjoy creating a city then this game is great. If little things annoy you then I suggest never playing an online game until it has been release for at least a year because there will always be problems with them (WoW was no exception). So yep this game has some annoying points and frankly whilst I enjoy it, I'll probably wait a few months before "paying" for the online aspect. And hopefully they will have made some changes and sorted out some of the problems. Hence if you buy this game then assume you're buying a solo offline game. If you prefer to have your building decisions limited then try Tropico III. Cities XL is a soapbox though with the small problems it feels more like a sandpit. My advice is wait a few months for the game to fall in price then buy it and in the mean time play Dragon Age: Origins, a most excellent game.

Cities XL is one of the best city simulation games i have played since since sim city 4. although the planet offer of ending the creators are putting a lot of the online content into download which will be cool.all round enjoyable game the one thin with is it is the on some systems it can lag on the stock exchange but other than that it has really good graphics to and is a must buy if you like simcity

A very nice engaging game, with wonderful graphics. However, could be slightly repetitive and laggy at times - but I guess both depend on your creativity and computer system. This game has a huge potential.
