When corruption spreads throughout the lands, the valiant guardians of the mountain Morta - the Bergson family - must stand together against an ancient evil!"Children of Morta" is a button-bashing, hack-n-slash style dungeon crawling adventure in which you can play the various members of the Bergson family in a huge dungeon crawling adventure filled with loot, magical artifacts, and monsters of every description.Initially only one member of the family is available for you to play as, although you will unlock the other characters periodically throughout the game, each character has a different style of play, and there is enough variety here to suit the preferences of most gamers.John (the character you start with)for example is a warrior who fights with sword and shield, and as such has greater strength and toughness than most of his siblings, but is restricted to fighting at close quarters and is slower. His sister Linda meanwhile is a swift footed archer who specialises in taking out enemies at range but is comparatively weaker. Kevin (the youngest sibling) is an assassin who fights with a pair of knives, and whilst physically weak he is able to build up his attacks into a frenzy of speed that can decimate the toughest monsters in seconds once at it's peak. There are also three further heroes in Mark (a zen monk and martial artist), Lucy (a pyromancer who weilds flame magic), and Joey (a brawler who specialises in fighting crowds of enemies). The game is presented with delightfully retro 8-bit style graphics and has a real charm about it and invokes memories of the likes of "Gauntlet" (for those of you old enough to remember that!) in it's style of play with some light RPG elements thrown into the mix. It's a doddle to play, but difficult to fully master - and a word or warning - you will die in this game....a lot!Initially the frequency with which you expire might be off putting, as with no save points and with healing potions being extremely rare, you will find yourself teleported back to the family homestead to essentially start the level again. Stick with it though because there's a method to the madness. You see, this game is ALL about the grind, and the key to victory is to keep slugging away at each dungeon until you can gather enough gold to upgrade your weapons, armour, speed, critical chance and other important attributes, and level up your characters special abilities, until you're finally equal to the task at hand. Dungeons are procedurally generated though, so even though you have to replay levels repeatedly, each play through is unique.Children of Morta is not a game that is likely to have a wide appeal. It's deliberately classic style and the frequency with which you have to repeat levels is going to be a game-killer for some, but fans of the genre or retro-gaming will find themselves with a fun little experience with hours and hours of play time, and all available at a budget price.7/10

A cursory glance at CoM doesn't do it justice and can easily cause one to dismiss it as another Diablo clone like I initially did. Children of Morta is one of the best and most refreshing games I have played in some time. The story of CoM is an aspect you can invest as little in as you like, as it is presented in small chunks mostly between missions. I found myself growing rather fond of most of the characters, even those with cameo roles. This is all due to the powerful narrative voice that single-handedly conveys the significance of each element of the story. The premise isn't anything revelatory; you're fighting off corruption of the land, but each character along the way get their 15 minutes of spotlight that lets you know who they are and why they exist. With graphics, CoM walks a tightrope that balances between low-budget functionality and stylistic idiosyncrasies, for despite pixilation in the graphics, each level and character remains recognisable. Enemy attacks can be limited as they are regardless of budgets, yet I never found myself experiencing the dreaded colour palette swaps so prominent in games of this genre. There is definitely some repetition as the purple enemies come more often than I would like, but this is offset by gaining experience from their downfall. Overall, CoM is a game I will always remember and recognise from a simple screenshot. The gameplay is the bread and butter of CoM and by far the most memorable aspect. Having over half a dozen characters risks creating repetition in any game, yet CoM does a fantastic job of creating individual identities for every character. Their play styles require different tactics from the player that makes each character feel truly different and not just a different flavour of the same meal. Linda is ranged whilst John is melee, with Joey being slower and more methodical, but I shall not elaborate further to avoid spoilers. What sets CoM above similar titles for me is that with each death or completed mission you can retain your money and experience points, therefore having a tangible progression, making each playthrough more beneficial than the last. Each character has skills that benefit the whole family and this gives you an incentive to play as each character. The game itself I think is just about the right length, as this avoids inane repetition. The last two levels in particular of CoM are very mechanical both in theme and in practice, so it's good the game didn't outstay its welcome, however there are NG+ options for those who really enjoy this.Overall, CoM was a difficult start for me as I struggled to defeat early enemies, however I became more engrossed as I played and loved it and can easily recommend the game to most gamers.
