Let’s be 100% honest here this is a cheap amp, it’s not class A, B, C etc it’s not got a 12” speaker made by the pope, it’s not got valves hand crafted by a Tebatian goat herder, and the cabinet is not from some special interstellar planet, nopey no, this is a cheap amp. While we are being 100% honest let me say that I find this thing totally and utterly superb, and am chuffed to bits with this cheap amp. You can read anywhere how many tones you can get from it, or go on tube and here folk play patches, so not worth banging on about it is this review. So I am just adding my line in the sand and stating that if you want a top amp that you can set to 10% power, and practice your sh1t while watching TV or,going down the studio for a practice, or doing a small pub gig then this is for you. It’s only negative is the number of patches you can save, not enough in my mind unless you want to plug in a floor box (not supplied) that you can use to switch between 4 patches like clean, dirty, lead which is the Roland GA-FC (£78) etc. If you want to do more you will need to take your laptop with you and use Boss’s Tone Studio (which is good by the way), an ipad version of the Boss Tone Studio would be good and help no end with live work.Today I found out that there is also a further bunch of ‘hidden amps’ 28 in total that can be uploaded into the Katana using the Tone Studio, so what I thought was a fantastic amp got even better. The amps are from another Boss floor box but the extension files also work in the Katana so happy days.Oh, and there is also another bit of free software that can be used on a PC or Mac desk top written by a user that (although not as pretty to look at as the Boss Tone Studio) actually works very well, and also seems to allow you to use more effects in a patch than the Boss Tone Studio will allow, so another bonus, this amp just keeps giving. So let’s recap, cheap combo amp with 1 12’ speaker that gives quiet good emulation that when (I have said this on other reviews) playing in a pub, club, etc you could not tell if it’s valve or solid state, but you can here a strat in the neck position sound like it should, or a Les Paul in the bridge position with the tone rolled off sound like Graham Greene then yes it does this job. It is not a stack with 4 12” speaker although Boss make that version also does cost such a lot more but is this great value, the Tone Studio software is great, but get the third party software also (I think that there is also an Ipad version) and the added amps and your waste tons of time kicking around getting all the tones you can dream of.Go buy one, don’t bother with the other Blackstar, Vox, Fender versions, this is top value.

I had the pleasure of borrowing a Katana from a friend ( before extensively checking it out over the course of a week), as I wasconsidering buying one to replace my teaching amplifier. The Good:1 - Tones : simply excellent (especially the clean sounds). I find that pairing the clean channel with the built-in drive pedals produced the best distortion tones from the amp.2 - FX choice : loads of classic Boss effects like the Blues Driver, DD delays, etc. as well as emulations of other pedals (Tube Screamers and Big Muffs...) are present here, and they sound great! The control over each parameter is sublime if you connect it to a laptop.3 - User Interface : simple and effective. No horrible menu screen to dive through (like a certain Spider amplifier...)4 - Weight : fairly light for a 50W transistor amplifier - good for you oldies with bad backs!5 - 12 Inch Speaker : Yes!The Bad:1 - Drive Channels : not my cup of tea o. They need tweaking to sound good as they can get fizzy depending on the amount of gain you want. I generally find the crunch, lead and brown channels too bright ; I recommend you reduce the presence on these channels through the Katana tone editor, as it will reduce some of that fizz. Again, I had better results using the Clean channel with some of the built-in OD pedals...2 - Tone Editor Reliance : you have to have it hooked up to the tone editor (via a laptop) to access all the features . Certain effects cannot be accessed unless you save them to the Amplifiers preset/memory. Likewise, you will not be able to change or modify all the parameters of an effect (like delay time/mix/tone/rate...) unless you hook it up, as usually the FX control knobs will only act as a mix/blend for each effect. While the Katana 100 has a Presence knob, you need to use the Tone Editor to access it...Not good when in the heat of the moment with the band....3 - Does Not Support The GA-FC Footswitch : you will not be able to turn on/off individual effects with your feet ,as the foot-switch offering by Boss for the Katana 50 only changes between the channel presets (and you still need to buy it separately). A shame really ,because the effects are great! I would have appreciated that level of control with the Katana 50While I like the amplifier and can easily recommend it to others, I find myself sticking to my humble Marshall Code 25 for teaching as I can tweak everything from the amplifier without touching any external application (I am also a plexi-kid, and like my old-school Marshall sounds...). A few of my students have this amplifier, and they love it. But as a guitar player/teacher, it does not offer the amount of control I am looking for.

Final edit: that’s me had this amp now for around ten months, and everything that I’ve written still holds true. Using it with all my guitars (Fender USA strat, mex strat, Crafter SA Hybrid, Taylor Acoustic) it offers something really sweet for all. Honestly, I don’t see that I would ever “need” to replace it, and absolute workhorse of an amp with everything inside to keep most people happy. Plugged up pedals again recently and was struck by just how well it took them - would have no qualms using a range of overdrives in front end to add to versatility. Behaved impeccably on a number of live ocassions, always mic’d up on 25watt setting for plenty headroom but manageable volume on stage.Still gets 5 stars from me.Used it twice live and it is LOUD! Tones seem great so far, very versatile and takes an acoustic like a champ. Highly, highly recommend this amp at the price of £165, but also see the appeal of getting the 100watt purely for the extra preset store options. If this is all you can stretch to, there literally isn't anything else out there that comes close for the price - I've worked my way through a lot of gear and first impressions here are far surpassing everything else.Update: So, I've used this on a number of occasions now, and I have to say that having been a fan of how valve amps "feel" under the fingers, this amp somehow manages to capture this brilliantly. It's such a versatile amp tonally - every "voice" has such a range of tonal options simply by altering the gain setting, and then there is the range of boost options you can add too. If this amp proves itself to be as reliable over the long term as it should, then it will become an absolute classic. I still reinforce the point that if you can stretch to the 100watt it is worth it as it also gives you the master presence control, which would tame the high end when you get to those higher volumes. But, if you're running a pedal into it (of which it takes very well), then you can tweak the top end a little there. Delighted with it, can't fault it at all and would have valued it at around double the price had it been available a few years ago.

I have been looking for an amp that I thought might be impossible - great tone at bedroom levels, with a aux-in and a phono out. The main problem being the great tone at bedroom level. I live in a flat with paper thin walls so it was really important that the amp could be played very quietly. I was using a Blackstar Fly 3 and whilst it served its purpose, the tone wasn't great.I started looking on the web for bedroom/practice and things looked promising. The Katana 50, the Vox AV15, the Blackstar 1R and the Yamaha THR10 all seemed promising. I went along to my local music store and was able to try the Katana, the Blackstar and the Yamaha. I tried the Blackstar first and it was so, so,it sounded quite muddy, but I may not have given it a proper test. Then I tried the Katana and was blown away. Amazing tone and I could turn it right down to a whisper and it still sound great. After hearing the Katana the Yamaha didn't really stand a chance and although the tone and low level playing sounded good I had already fallen for the Katana. The Katana output can be attenuated from 50 to 25 or down to 0.5 watts. 0.5 was really what I was going to be using and it sounds fantastic. I would have liked to tries the Vox as it was cheaper, had attenuation, but I couldn't. In the end I was very happy to go with the Katana.Once I got it home it still sound brilliant in the bedroom and also with headphones. The onboard amps are really good, with the crunch, brown and lead right up my street and the onboard effects seem to be quality too.I have not delved into the online tweaking yet and to be honest I don't think I'm too bothered about it; I have a load of pedals I can use if needed.I highly recommend this amp for bedroom players as the low volume level tone is just amazing and it sound awesome with headphones. I can't recommend this amp enough.

First, I've been playing acoustic guitar for decades, but am new to amplified music. Decided I needed to up my basic amp and saw a Katana at a local guitar show. Suitably impressed I bought the 50 watt version, I'm a hobby guitarist and don't need a system that will fill the O2 with sound. What attracted me to this was the quality of the sound and build, also the range of effects. I was wary of filling my bedroom with pedals and monitors because (1) it would be messy and restrictive (2) I wouldn't have a clue what to buy or how to use it. The Katana solved that for me, there's a big choice of effects which can be run individually or in parallel and they're all available on the control panel. So,I can select from Wah, tremolo, reverb, chorus etc. plug in headphones in the back of the cabinet and play unheard by the neighbours. Of course I can entertain the surrounding area by unplugging the 'phones and blasting out full power. or select half power or even (practice mode) drop down to 0.5 watts. This is a versatile, fairly compact amp which impressed my son-in-law, a man that played heavy metal in a local band for some years and owns lots of those pedals and things that are a mystery to me. Whatever your stage of development guitar-wise you will find the Katana range worth investigating. If, like me, you're a relative newcomer to electric guitar, you can do no better in my opinion.Oh and delivery was very prompt with good packaging that protected the amp without filling the house with excessive polystyrene and paper.

Unbelievable product, so much bang for your buck. Endless variety of tones and effects options available. I love how simple you can keep things if you want to - sometimes with modelling amps you can go down the rabbit hole of endless tinkering with effects to find great tone at the expense of just playing - you can dial up rich creamy clean tones in seconds using the built in controls, but you can also or get as technical as you like the Tone Studio software (which is 100% Free and offers you the ability to easily customise the built in pedals you choose to have preset on the panel as well as just download loads of preconfigured chunky and smooth tones that have been tried and tested ).I’ve only used for bedroom use, which it’s just perfect for - I don’t have the option of cranking up a valve amp until my guitar screams to get a great sound as I live in a small London flat. If you buy, make sure to harness all the great advice on YouTube for using this product and learning its features properly - I spent a few months just fooling around, with poor tone, but recently had a couple of spare days to really put in some hours and study - the improvement in the output and versatility of my sounds was amazing. I play a Fender MIM strat and enjoy Pink Floyd, Hendrix, John Mayer and Mark Knopfler style tones.

This is the best sounding 50W amp I have ever used in 40 years (for home use and small gigs). Digital Effects have certainly come a long way. Nice quiet amp and speaker, good effects. Can select one of 4 pre-set channels. Doesn't weigh a ton. The price was £165 when I bought one, then it went to £185 and now £199. I considered £160 a steal, £199 is still worth it though. If anyone is looking for a good starter/mid-level kit, get one of these (and an Ibanez SA260 guitar) and you will never regret it! No other gizmos needed! My son tried mine for an afternoon and bought one that night!Only thing that would make it better would be to have four buttons for the channel selection and more knobs for some other effects, and add bluetooth but all these can be worked around.

As a below average guitarist I'm always on the look out for things to enhance my limited skills. I was was recommended this amp by you tube guru guitarist Dave Simpson and boy did it deliver. It's has an amazing range of sounds and settings and a truly wonderful sound. But if you connect it to you PC and download the free app the Katana truly comes to life. On it's own it sound somewhere between a marshal and a vox. But using the pc you can potentially get any sound out of it. It's the perfect practice amp. But it's also capable of gigging . Oh and the price.. The Price.. how do they do it..

Very pleased with this amp. There is so much potential in the various effects. There is more than enough power for my use, and the different power settings are excellent.I cant help thinking that it would be nice to have an in-built tuner and seeing as it is digital, how about modelling a base guitar in addition to / instead of an acoustic ? you could then loop a base line under a lead when using a looper. There may well be a good technical reason, but that would set it apart from others in the same space. Such is the pace of change in this sector.

As a guitarist with 42 years playing under my belt, I've owned a few amps, valve mostly, Marshall , 3 fenders a vox and a Burman, I've also owned valvestate and tech 21. Im amazed at this little amp , honestly it really is that good, I can't think of any style of playing it won't suit, don't be fooled by the price this is a seriously good little amp, if your choosing for home use the 0.1 watt is just brilliant .

Best amp I've ever had. Theres acoustic guitar setting, clean, crunch, Lead, and brown is Wasacrafts input. There is a ton of effects, each as good as a boss pedal, that alone saves you buying a blues overdrive pedal, a chorus pedal, distortion pedal, reverb, wah, flanges the list goes on and on. I knock it down to 25w or 0.5w if neighbours are home! Amazing tone.

22.4.2018

After posting a rather negative review, I still think this amp for £200 is incredible!Still will only use the clean channel on 25 & 50W with pedals, but I have found a few favorable boosts, delays and reverbs inside the Katana.Recently tweaked the graphic eq in the FX settings after watching a Justin Sandercoe video on this amp. Wow, what a difference!

11.6.2017

Lots of decent quality tones. Quiet operation and fantastic ability to reduce gain settings down to .5w for house playing. Tried a Blackstar before that was very noisy in operation, this is much better in my opinion.

Great the hubby was most impressed purchased as a Christmas gift for him although there is a newer wireless one just come out ??? but amazing piece of kit his words. I have no idea lol

21.3.2017

Unbelievable quality.Absolutely love it.Very loud (unlike the 40 watt Cube I recently bought which couldn't cope with with drums and bass) this cuts right through.Buy one.
