I have only played this game on the internet, so count this as a review for the online aspect, as I have no experience of 1 player). At first I was hesitant to play this game. I wanted to stick my trusted counter-strike, but a friend got me round to playing it, and I am glad he did.It features massive levels, where there are separate 'fortifications' set up around the level. The aim is to capture all of these bases, using your team mates. Admittedly the game takes AGES to load, but once its done you are amazed. You choose to be axis (baddies) or allies (goodies), choose what type f soldier you want to be (mechanic, scout etc) and then choose your drop point. You then start game where you chose, and join the action with your teammates, whether its trying to blow up a tank, snipe off enemies from across rivers, or storm the opposition's stronghold.I played this at a LAN party, so voice to voice communication was important in deciding decisions and next moves. You find yourself taking cover, talking (or typing) to your teammates to structure an attack or strategy. Its great fun, and the levels are so expansive, you have the ability to sneak round enemies, and fire in from behind. You can choose to play from a whole variety of levels, such as omagh beach (looks very realistic (based on saving private ryan)), a torn down Berlin city, Pacific islans (where the battle is between the axis group are japanese), North African desert plains and many other scenes. Based on the second world war, every location is included. The inventory on offer is amazing. You start off with your selected weapons (Sniper rifle if you're a scout etc), but the real treasure lies in the vehicles. You can fly large bombers around, you piloting, with a friend as the bomber, trying to blow up targets of importance (i.e places with lots of enemies :p), or you can choose the quick and nimble jeep, that offers speed, but little cover. One of my favourite features was the radio functions. You have the ability to radio teammates, to give quick instructions. Based very much like counter-strike's radio method where you press hotkeys, to choose a radio sub-selection, and then specify a command to say.As I have described it as a war sim, you may think your life will be lost quick, and you will be storming through row after row of enemy, but online play is a whole different story. You use stealth to sneak up on enemies, sniping from a distance while your mate drives a tank up the main route laying down heavy fire while you snipe from a window unnoticed. The game does last very long though. Unlike counter-strike where rounds last a matter of minutes, rounds on battlefield 1942 last for 30 mins or so, so you have time to settle and build strategies.the game is always changing. You may have a base one minute, to find it being taken over the next. this means you move around alot, taking the APC, crammed with other players to the battle, or climbing over the hilltops, ready to snipe in on your target.the graphics are simply stunning. Some of the best I have witnessed. For this reason you do need a capable computer with strong graphic and processing and for internet play I would advise the use of broadband.I would highly recommend this game for anyone who is wanting a strategic game, based around massive levels with a real sense of freedom. It doesn't offer the non-stop action that other titles such as quake may offer, but it is definatly worth adding to your internet gaming list! Definatly a must have!Theis game is simply awesome. The levels are massive and allow for true roaming, with no set paths to follow. The action is more in the style of moments of quick thinking required, and getting into better positions than your enemies, and using the surroundings well.the graphics are good, and online play is immense!I would garentee this game to any online gamer who is looking for good, lasting fun!Get out there and play it!

Let's get this out of the way: Battlefield 1942 is a MULTIPLAYER game. Across a broadband connection on a fast server, you can quite possibly spend every waking hour playing this.It is just FANTASTIC playing against real people, and the versatility of the game means you can hold your own against seasoned players by virtue of the different classes of character, and the staggering number of vehicles, mounted weapons, aircraft and ships you can commandeer or crew during a battle. Also, because the gameplay is based around controlling waypoints rather than simply running up frags, no single player can dominate, which sharpens up teamplay no end and again adds to the equality of participating players.Ok,so whats wrong with single player? Answer: the team AI is possibly the most frustratingly crap I have ever, ever seen. I played single-player it just to get to know the maps and I nearly threw the damn computer out of the room in frustration. Teammates kill each other (and you) with frequent gusto, spawn 100 miles from the most hotly contested and strategically important waypoints leaving you stranded and alone against several tanks and machine gunners, and anti-tank infantry honestly couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo. Ride in a tank and your AI driver/gunner will drive unerringly towards an enemy tank without firing a shot until you are both blown up; and AI pilots on your team clearly follow the US Air Force training manual as friendly fire incidents happen with monotonous regularity. (Unsurprisingly, enemy AI is usually vastly superior by the absence of a human on their team confusing the game's strategic logic). My verdict - BF 1942 is the Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde of gaming - absolutely top of the class in multiplayer, woeful and pathetic in single player. BUY IT ANYWAY!

The deluxe edition of battlefield 1942 contains the original and the road to rome campaign. If you're bored of corridor war games like medal of honour where you have little affect on the outcome of a mission then you should buy battlefiald 1942. Rather than assume the role of just one soldier you assume the role of many. You spawn, fight, die and then respawn as another soldier. The game itself is very basic you kill as many of the enemy as you can and try to capture all of the flags on a map doing so will take points off the other army. Depending on the battle each amry starts with around 400 points when you kill a soldier a point is taken off, when you capture a flag a point is taken off the first army to lose all of its points loses the battle. The maps are huge and varied, you fight on the beaches, in cities and in the desert. You can controll all sorts of vehicles inclueding jeeps, tanks, fighter and bomber planes and can even take controll of giant aircraft carriers. If it was in the seond world war then you can use it in the game. Unlike many other games it is not scripted at all! compare for example the omaha beach level from battlefield 1942 with allied assault. In allied assault every in game charachter does the same thing over and over again you also have no choice you get thrown out of the landing craft and either head up the beach or die. In battlefield however you could drive the landing craft yourself onto the beach and take the tank up to the fortified base, or you could take controll of one of the ship artillary cannons and shell the fortified positions and its simple to do thanks to a great game engine. If you like FPS and war games then you will love this.

I originally bought this back inthe dark days of having a 56k modem, and I was never particularly keen on multiplayers. Being a big MOHAA fan I bought BF1942 as I like WW2 games. But on playing I realised (like so many others) that the single player campain is only really a a multiplayer game with bots. And as I was about singleplayers I got shot of the game as soon as possible.Months later and with broadband installed, one of my friends suggested I join him and a couple of mates playing BF1942 online as he said it was a quality game online. So I bought it again - and wasn't dissappinted! This game shines as a multiplayer, and is very addictive. Some levels are dominated by airsupport which is not the best if you're not flying! But the best thing of all is the Desert Combat mod... its unbelievable! Better than the BF1942 multiplayer it has modern arsenals including helicopters, special forces and jets. Helicopters take a while to master but they are worth the effort. In my opinion this makes buying BF1942 a must. The original game is great and the add-ons fun (particularly the add-on in the deluxe package), but Desert Combat is definately the deal maker. I'm running it with a radeon 9800 pro with 4xAA and 16x AF and it is fast and smooth with no graphical errors whatsoever. If you're after a quality multiplayer with the best mod available buy it now - you won't regret it.If you're after a singleplayer void it - you'll only be disappointed.

I got a free demo version of Battlefield 1942 from [...] just to see what online gaming was all about. I played the demo and instantly was hooked. Never before have I experienced such fantastic variety of gameplay. You can drive jeeps, tanks and amoured personnel carriers as well as fly a variety of planes and captain gunships, aircraft carriers and landing-craft, all in the many theatres of WWII. Playing multiplayer with many others from all over the globe (I'm not sure if their is a maximum on a map, but I've fought with 40) makes for the best sense of team spirit and objective I've ever experienced in a war game - although makes tactics a little difficult! The maps are fairly well differentiated with Wake Island and Omaha Beach that really stand out.Landing on the beaches on D-Day is quite an experience (with no disrespect to those who we really there), quickening the pulse and getting the adrenaline flowing. One caveat is that you must check that you have the right computer specs. The game demands a lot from the graphics card (perhaps unneccesarily so) and would not work on a friends brand new medium range computer (however, mine's fine and it's more than a year old). But, if you have the hardware then no worries.All-in-all, the game offers great graphics, gameplay and variety and is a must have. If you're still unsure, then get the demo, play once, and then buy it - you won't regret it!

I had no problems about buying this game as the reviews all over the internet gave it top marks, at least I know I wouldnt end up with a lemon. When I installed this game I was already connected to the internet. I decided to play campaign and off I went.I was convinced I was playing online, when I died I would have to wait a few seconds to respawn and the other soldiers had personal names.I disconnected from the net and discovered that this was how the game was. The whole feel is that your playing online even when your not.Huge levels and very challenging. Aggression is a must if you want to push the enemy back and secure a victory. 'Camping' will get you nowhereYou can call for reinforcements if they are available, air support, artillery support and naval support. You can be a foot soldier, pilot, tank commander or sniper, engineer, medic or machine gunner. The mods for this game are plentiful and many of of the highest quality thus ensuring you will never get bored with this title. One mod in particular 'Desert Combat' downloadable off the net for free will put you in modern day Iraq. You wont be sorry with this game but be warned, it is a heavy game and your system must meet the minimum recommended spec in order to run it. Check EA's site for supported graphic cards

As a self confessed veteran of war-time games (I often think of my missus as a "Medal of Honor Widow"), i didn't really know what to expect from this game.Medal of Honor and its additions have made me a #1 fan of first-person shooters, though Battlefield 1942 never really appealed to me. This has proved to be very foolish of me as I have only just realised HOW GOOD THIS GAME IS!If I had taken 2 minutes to read the game description when it first came out, I wouldn't be writing this now!Since the installation of Broadband and the purchase of a decent PC, Multiplayer gaming has possessed my life!Battlefield 1942 is simply stunning in Multiplayer, a real good laugh, and the versatility of the game is jaw-dropping when you compare it to the limited movement in MoH.Due to voice commands, and sheer determination to hold your postions, the teams work really well together; i.e. if you request a pick-up, someone will answer your call and pick you up in a tank/huey/boat etc! (how sweet?)I HIGHLY recommend the Eve of Destruction add-on, to play a Vietnam version, which is a new game in itself and HIGHLY addictive!Either way, this game will take over your life, you have been warned!Downsides? Single player. But who likes playing on their own anyway?

This game is based on many of the battles of World War 2, this game, bases its genre on that, A Battle, not a mission; So basically you can virtually do anything, Fly Planes, Drive Jeeps, Lay Mines, Shoot Down Aeroplanes with a AA Gun, Conduct Assualts with Tanks, these are just a few weapons at your disposal. The package also provides you with a "battlecraft", this enables you to create maps with ease, so you can enjoy your custom designed map with global community.I have played this game Online and should be experienced by Modems which are 200k or above. On LAN the game plays very well, with no lag!!! or very small when the server is making changes, i have played to the maximum capability of 64 players on LAN (LAN EVENT in London)and Online which provides a real feel of the game, making a total assualt on the enemy.Once you have the game, you can download updates, from the official website, which gives you even more things for free, such as units and maps. For the true experience of the game, it should be played online, the game has had me hooked for 1 year, and its not loosing its touch, as there are so many ways to win a battle, and many ways to lose it.

Fantastic multiplayer game. Need your broadband and decent spec pc. Many many hours of fun. Not much of a single player game. Did the same as many other people and played the single player first and thought the game was average at best. Several weeks later gave it another go in multiplayer mode and wow! Word of warning though do not buy if you have deadlines of some sort approaching (students). You just can't stop playing the thing.
