Infinity Ward's Classic World War two FPS breaks the trend of prior war games by switching from the lone wolf fighting the might of the axis and instead opts for a more believable and immersive experience. Up to this point Medal of Honour would have had us believing an American one man army stormed the Reichstag, killed Hitler and brought the German war machine to its knees. Now we get to see the other players.CoD shifts emphasis between 3 participants, American paratroopers taking and holding key points in Normandy in preparation for D-day, the British SAS sabotaging German efforts, blowing up dams and infiltrating battleships and finally the Russians in Stalingrad as they face almost insurmountable odds.Just before any one campaign begins to fatigue it switches eventually joining each story again for a final mission.Whilst you will have many general NPCs the few key players all have distinct personalities that help bring them to life and immerse you further in the experience. I know it's just a game but I have to admit, when one of them died I stormed the building in front of me and emptied a whole clip into the solider responsible. The other general NPCs give a sense of comfort, knowing someone has your back helps in tight spots really emphasising the tension in those few missions where you get separated and making you mourn the loss of each fallen ally. Each campaign has a distinct feel with appropriately different objectives and set pieces. Level design and style vary for each story and are all easy to understand and proceed through without the need for waypoints, and yet they don't feel restrictive and overly linear. Each also has the equivalent of cut scenes where you are still in character to introduce them; the most memorable is the Russians which apes Enemy at the Gates, but without feeling cheap. Other than this you have control of your faceless, voiceless soldier at all times. The controls are tight and intuitive with a minimal HUD that still ensures you're always aware of your ammo, health and objective. The shooting feels natural and accurate without being too easy and whilst there is no run the lean proves an invaluable tool. You can probably tell I'm fond of this game, it just set itself so far apart from its contemporaries and its quality can be seen in the continued sales of Call of Duty games. As an extra the third party expansion, United Offensive, is actually surprisingly good. It introduces the run function as well as more varied missions and the same high standard of level design and characterisation. The Final Word: Started a new chapter in video games and still holds up in today's market. It's worth taking a trip back to the start for a game that still provides some of the best WWII experiences in visual media.

With the expansion United Offensive, the game got a whole lot better for multi-player.You can now drive in jeeps & tanks for Russia, Germany, USA and the British.I still haven't finished the single player campaign for this game, not when online it's so much more fun.Soon it'll be 2012 and MW3 and BF3 will be out, will the CoD & CoD:UO servers still be alive and kicking? Of course they will.People still come back after their stints of the latest CoD MW game, usually complaining about the latest version. This game is the reason I've had the same PC for the last 8 years, without any need to upgrade. It's a perfect game.It has a strong community, and using V commands (voice chat)to see each other on the mini compass/map is genius and darn right fun. This is the game that planted the seed of the 'Call of Duty' Franchise.Though now widely known as Modern Warfare, the original CoD:UO is still the best. It's a shame they haven't released the second half of the game (the expansion pack) on xbox live. Then xbox gamers would see what CoD was - and still is - all about in Multiplayer warfare.

And you're going to enjoy it.After Half-Life 2, this is probably the best linear FPS shooter that you can get your sweaty mitts on. It all comes down to the noise: the constant barrage of gunfire by the enemy and by your allies; the shouted orders of your sergeant; the rumble of the tank rush. It also comes down to the "Oh. My. God" setpieces. There is nothing out there that I have seen to trounce the Stalingrad introduction - it's exactly like watching the first minutes of the film Enemy at the Gates. The team who have made this game have put forward so many situations, it truly boggles the mind. The chase sequences, the sniper duels, the rush for cover before the machine guns open up,the SAS ops... United Offensive is also a worthy addition, as the little cut-scenes between your fellows bring a "Band of Brothers" atmosphere. It is YOUR duty to buy this...

This is a very worthwhile purchase for several reasons. Firstly, it contains the fantastic original Call of Duty which has a tremendously intense single player game, not to mention a decent multiplayer.Secondly, it contains United Offensive which also has an excellent single player but also contains (and this is the trump card) one of the best multiplayer games of all time! Many believe it to be superior to multiplayer based games like Battlefield and i would have to agree! Other minor improvements that UO holds are better graphics and more characterisation of fellow soldiers that you meet in the single player game.So to sum up, if you have an interest in WW2 games or just FPS games in general this is an absolutely esssential purchase! You won't regret it!

Excellent fun if a bit mindless. Having said that if you don't think your approach to each move through you won't last long. I worked my way through this on the first three difficulty levels and enjoyed it each time though I have to say the difficulty seemed to related to how many times the enemy 'respawned', bit disconcerting to shoot someone, have their helmet fly in the air with lots of red and the next second the chap is cutting loose at you with an MG42 or whatever.Probably not good and not your sort of game if you take this sort of shooting fest seriously as completion of every scenario depends on achieving objectives that mean killing lots of pixels. Lots of fun though :-)

I've just got Call of Duty, a bit late arn't you I hear people say. Well I maybe a bit slow on the upkeep but this games isn't, is a cracker. The graphics and sound are excellent, whilst the gameplay is none stop. If people ask me what is your favourite CoD this would be it. You can not only play as the americans but also the russians & the brits which is great. The games battles are turely realistic whilst the multiplayer is addictive! The Expansion pact is also good fun, the campaign is on the small side however, but the multiplayer will blow you away. All in all this game is a bargin & one of the worlds best First person shooters, don't miss out

This game is very good indeed - the first in an excellent series of 1st person tactical shooters. I write this from the benefit of having graduated through the PC versions of CALL OF DUTY 1, 2 & 4. They just keep getting better. Version one can now be bought so cheaply that its value in terms of price per hour of entertainment value makes it an excellent start for anybody cautious about spending money on computer games that usually fail to measure-up. This game is excellent value for money now and will give you hours of fun. Once hooked, you'll want to grade up. I can tell you that Call of Duty 4 is like being in your own war movie. Get them all!

Played this for years now (multiplayer) and will never stop playing it til there is no-one left to shoot.Have tried and played many games since i found this but ALWAYS end up coming back to this. The gameplay is great and multiplayer servers have only respectful and die hard UO people playing in them.It doesn't matter how good or bad you are because people who play this play for one reason only.....FUN.If it's super dooper graphics you want look somewhere else, if it's good fun and gaming then this is the business.

This is a great game. The graphics are excellent; particularly the weather and terrain. The storylines are also good as they are original but are at places tht people have actually heard of unlike some other games. The only glitch that I have encountered was when a shot someone and they fell through a solid wall. But oh well, everything else is great and I would really recommend it. Also, if you like BAND OF BROTHERS then you will LOVE this game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like this sort of game and thus bought it based upon demos and reviews. It is a 'realistic' first person shooter set in the second world war. You can get drawn into the game quite easily and with decent graphics and sound it seems quite real. It is an old game and thus should not be compared to the latest Call of Duty, but if you haven't played the new games you won't know what your missing. Lots of different scenarios, some more difficult than others. Great.

Great game it works fine with eee pc 1008ha seashell. Touching campain will keep u hocked for hours on end. And when ur done with that u can go online to have more fun. The main downside to this game is the same as all other company of heroes games which all require the CD rom to run the game in Single player mode. Other info is the game comes in just 1 regular looking dvd type case.

playing this online whern the servers were full was happy days, had my own COD 1( x 2, one 14 man scrim server and a 40 man guests allowed brawler) & a 20 man U.O server, fun time shappy memories, i am sure many ppl still play this online

3.1.2009

This is definitely one of my favourite games, particularly as it can run on a laptop with low specifications. The expansion pack offers a few interesting levels, and though the game as a whole is a bit easy I still come back to it.

Having started my gaming with Battlefield 3 this game surprised me. Good flexibility, good weapons and lots of single player, the graphics are very acceptable on a high end pc. Getting both games was a real bonus.

I love this game. just a couple of sections were the movements a little slow and jerky but the rest is brilliant. The expansion pack adds to the enjoyment and keeps it going for longer.
