Ash of Gods Redemption is a fantasy role playing game set on the world of Terminus where you take control of a group of characters who are survivors of a dark apocalyptic event called "The reaping", which involves the return of an ancient evil that brings with it a plague to wipes out nearly all who encounter it and threatens the end of civilization. The story is told from three intersecting perspectives - that of a retired royal guard, Thorn Brenin, a wandering healer named Hopper Rouley, and a professional assassin/bodyguard called Lo Pheng, each of whom finds themselves involved in the cataclysmic events of the story, although along the way you will meet many more interesting characters who will join your band of wandering rogues. The game is split between a world map (where story elements play out), and a tactical map (where combat occurs). The world map displays you and your entourage as it makes its way across the land, and as your caravan travels across the landscape you will encounter various locations or events that will require you to make leadership decisions.Moral choices are central to the developing plot. These could be as simple as deciding whether to help passers by and involve you having to consider the risks or rewards of such actions. Strangers may be grateful for your assistance, provide gifts in the form of gold, trinkets, or even join your group, or they could be vicious bandits intent on killing you. Alternatively they could be neither, but providing assistance could cost you valuable time. Sometimes however the decisions you are required to make can be major ones that influence the path of the story line or result in significant changes or impact on your characters.Be advised, there is not always a 'right' choice to make. Often all you are presented with is a series of bad choices - some worse than others - and you are effectively left to make the decision as to what the lesser evil is, and whilst the temptation is always to investigate ongoings, the potential cost means that sometimes the best decision is to take no action at all.Along your way you will frequently find yourself engaged in battle. Prior to combat on the tactical map you will choose a team of warriors with which to do battle and can also equip them with any magical items you have acquired. Initially you will have only two or three characters to choose from, but as the story progresses and new characters join your group, you will be able to select up to six fighters for each battle, each with their own tactical strengths and weaknesses, and all with their own unique appearances, back stories, and personalities. You will also be able to equip a deck of magical cards that can be used at the beginning of a turn (determined by the classification of the card) and provide buffs to your party or alternatively damage your enemies.Combat occurs on a sort of isometric "chess board" similar to that seen in many traditional turn-based strategy games such as the original X-COM, being composed of a grid of squares, with each square representing one unit of movement. At the onset of combat you may deploy your troops within certain highlighted areas allowing you to choose where to place your characters in order to best respond to the type of enemy you face.Once combat begins you will take alternate turns to move your characters whilst the computer controls your opponents. Like your own characters, the enemy comes in a variety of unit types from lightly armoured troops armed with bows or throwing daggers that attack from range, to massively armoured tank-type characters who can soak up large amounts of damage, or wizard-like enemies with the ability to place buffs on other enemy units or use their spells to damage your party.Battle continues until all units on one side of the conflict have been defeated with victory resulting in the awarding of gold and 'strixes' - which are magical stones that prolong life and are the games essential resource as they allow your characters to survive among the plague where as those without them have succumbed. Gold meanwhile can be used to purchase supplies and items available from the numerous traders you meet along your way, and characters will also gain experience that allows them to level up their numerous special attacks and abilities. When characters fall in combat they obtain a minor wound. Obtain four minor wounds and the character will die, and when they die they stay dead, taking with them their inherent value to your party and any experience they have gained. This makes the managing of wounds incredibly important to long term success, and makes it risky to utilize characters that are close to death (carrying three minor wounds) in battle. Wounds can however be healed periodically by resting at certain key points on the map - although at the cost of losing some of your precious strixes - or by engaging the services of certain healers.Visually the game manages to be both simple and stunning and is accompanied by an enchanting orchestral score, and it will instantly draw parallels with the likes of "Banner Saga".Ash of Gods isn't quite the equal of that game - It has an extremely steep learning curve, battles are frequently unforgiving, and controls are very tricky to get a full understanding of in the beginning - but it is nevertheless still a charming, engrossing, and ultimately rewarding story that provides hours of game play and an enjoyable and traditional role playing experience.

It is frustrating that everyone thinks this is a rip off of Banner Saga - the story is far more interesting and compelling.
