Surprisingly larger than I thought - quite a lot bulkier, larger than my palm, etc. The clock face is always illuminated by a soft green light. It is not visible in daylight. Only in darkness would it be bright enough to illuminate the whole clock face for you to tell the the time easily. And that constant glow is not bright enough to disturb sleep at all. It really is very soft. I never thought I would find this function so handy but now I really appreciate it. No more having to turn my phone screen on to view the time or to squint at my tiny alarm clock to read the time in the middle of the night. Now on this clock there is also an on/off button switch for the clock light. When pressed,it produces a much stronger and brighter light than the constant soft green light that the clock face emits. I do notice that it doesn't always ring at the precise minute I set the alarm at, but will ring about +5/-5 minutes around the time set. That seems to be a limitation of analogue alarm clocks due to the way the alarm is triggered by the movement of the clock hands, and all the analogue alarm clocks I've had all did the same, so I can't really fault this clock really. I just have to make sure I set it a tiny bit earlier if I'm worried I'll be late.

I bought this clock after an unfortunate coffee incident with my old clock. Anyway the main factors I wanted in my new clock was silence and a dim back light as I prefer to have it on all the time so I can see the time through squinted eyes during the night without having to press a button to illuminate. Surprisingly enough this was actually a lot harder a task than first expected! After considering the reviews on this one I went ahead and it was delivered in good time.Upon setting the clock I was relieved and pleased to notice it was indeed silent, no annoying ticking noises. The numbers are quite big and clear and the alarm is easy enough to set etc. So far so good. The big test however was how bright the backlight was which unfortunately is the reason why I cannot give this clock 5 stars. Although it is supposed to only give a dim green backlight, I find this way too bright for me. If the light illuminates everything on my bedside table and manages to penetrate through my eyelids, it's too light in my opinion! lolOverall I like the clock but have had to revert to pressing the top button during the night if I want to see the time. Good clock if you don't mind a bit of light in your room.

At last I can see the clock in the dark. The feint green glow is enough to pin point the hand positions easily and quickly and the silent operation ensures no waking up to ticking sounds. My previous clock recently failed after 30 years service and if this item manages half that time I will be very pleased. Competitively priced and from a known maker (well to me anyway) I am very pleased. Only time will tell (no pun intended) whether it will stand the test of time (not again) but first impressions suggest it will. The three batteries required to operate the clock are not supplied but readily available on Amazon or locally. The instructions are clear and easy to follow and the green glow can be turned off but operates automatically as darkness descends when set to on. According to the instructions the batteries will last around 12 months with the glow set to automatic but I suggest you turn it off whilst you are away for longer periods such as holidays. This might help to ensure the battery life remains at maximum.

This is really perfect in so many ways. The batteries seem to last forever and the light sensitive night glow feature is brilliant. I'll not get too excited about it though as it is a beside clock at the end of the day - a walnut veneer might enhance it possibly.UPDATE - The batteries don't last forever. After 11 and a half months the night light glow stopped working even though the hands were still going round. At first I thought the clock was broken and Amazon we're all set to refund me but then I did try changing the batteries and that solved the problem so I'm happy again but the batteries don't last forever as I had first thought. When replacing the batteries I also noticed that the battery compartment was a little loose.I think it poor quality materials are to blame however it is not affecting the function at the moment and the clock is working well.

I have been very satisfied with this illuminated dial alarm clock. The entire face lights up at night (feature may be switched off). Alarm starts slowly and ratchets up to a very loud electronic ring that should wake almost anyone, who is not totally deaf. This is a 12 hour clock and uses batteries to run. It has a sweep second hand, and is totally quiet in normal use (no ticking). The face is very large and viewable from a very wide angle. 4 controls: knob to change the time; set the alarm; turn the night light on or off; and the alarm set feature. The alarm clock also has a snooze button on the top, which does dual duty: to mute the alarm for 5 minutes before ringing again (not user adjustable)and to increase the dial illumination to maximum (useful in a totally dark room, where maximum readability is required.)Highly recommended at this price point.

Absolutely wonderful. It shines a bright green light in the dark and can be dimmed. The alarm is good and loud and can run for half an hour! It starts off quietly and rises to a crescendo! I would have liked the second hand to move in jolts of a second at a time so you can count the number of seconds. Instead, it justs glides smoothly round the face of the clock. One bad point I found was that after 2 years, after many new 3 AA battery replacements, the alarm started to become unreliable. It did not always ring as set, or at the time one set it. But I liked it so much I bought an identical one recentlyAnother good point is that it is not radio-controlled,which means tthat you can take it abroad and set it to the new time.wherever you are. You cannot do that with a radio-controlled clock.which reverts to UK time.

This is the second Acctim sweeper alarm clock that I've had. The first one I purchased from Argos some years ago. I loved it.The silent sweeper hand is excellent for anyone who hates a ticking clock next to their bedside as it's so quiet. The alarm is good and gently wakes you up, it gradually gets louder to rouse even the deepest sleeper too. I've never bothered to keep the back light on, but it's a good feature if anyone likes it. It's a nice size, not too small, but not huge. The reason I bought a second one is, after a few years the alarm became a bit unreliable and I couldn't risk sleeping in on an important day. The old clock is still going strong in a spare bedroom and keeping perfect time, but without the use of the alarm, so I'm happy. The supplier delivered quickly and was well packaged.

Very pleased with this clock. It's completely silent and the alarm is easy to use & effective, but the thing I like the best is the residual glow of the screen - not too much that it illuminates the whole bedroom - but enough to quickly orientate yourself and check what unwelcome hour of the night you've woken up in! I'm very short sighted so without my glasses I can't see very much, but the glow of the face is like a full moon in the blurry haze of my room. With a small shift of my head and a squint of the eyes I can make out the time & see how long before the alarm goes off. The full dial illumination button on top is seldom needed thanks to the residual glow and the alarm button is easy to find and positive in use.Best alarm clock I've had in years!

Nicely designed clock - the important issues I want to talk about are:- There is an automatic night light - but it can be kept off for those of us that like a room that is completely black at night- The light is a good brightness, enough light to make your way through a dark house at night if you want it to be like a temporary torch, and not too bright to check the time at night- No glow in the dark bits, again great for people that want a completely dark room at night- Setting the time was a bit jerky and a bit fiddly to get the minute hand pointing just right, but you only need to set it one time so no big dealMy wife has now asked me to purchase 2 more of these clocks,so a definite thumbs up from our family.

I'm really pleased with this alarm clock. I currently live in central Africa where electricity can be a bit tricky. I wanted a realiable alarm clock that was quiet but reliable, did not glow all night but is easy to read. This item ticks all those boxes. The sweep arms make it quiet. It has a large traditional clock face that is easily illuminated at night when you want to see the time. There is the option of setting the half power back light to come on automatically when the light level drops at night.AA batteries provide the power. The alarm sound is progessive waking you gently to start with but becoming more aggressive the longer you ignore it.All in all an excellent piece of kit, good value for money.

The first clock that was delivered, was faulty in that the second sweep hand was bent around the minute hand. I asked Harts to exchange it but all they did was refund the money I paid them.I bought the same clock from Argos for 3 quid cheaper and no bent hand. Its silent with a sturdy feel to it, however if you wear glasses you might find it a little hard to make out the time at night, even with the glow activated. The sweep hands are hollow where as in the photo's you get the impression they are coated with the green reflective neon finish, which would have made them stand out really well.Still a good clock that does the job.. Well done Argos for undercutting everyone.

Very nice clock but the self-illumination is only as bright as illustrated if you press the light button. Otherwise it is barely visible and only comes on when pre-set and in darkness. With low levels of lighting such as a streetlamp streaming through net curtains, the backlight will be off.The clock is easy to set and is quite a bit larger than expected, in fact about the same size as a classic wind-up alarm of old.The AA batteries are not included and rarely are with other clocks, but there was nothing outstandingly negative about it. Acctim's clocks are usually reliable and good value and we have others of theirs around the home.

I bought this product as a replacement for a new, but sub-standard, digital alarm clock I purchased from Amazon. The clock itself is a good size, mine doesn't tick - it really is silent - and the glow is very bright when you press the button on top.My one criticism, hence 4 stars, is that if the clock is set to "auto glow in the dark" I found the glow to be a little too bright at night. It could do with being turned down a couple of brightness notches. But that's just me. And I don't have it to auto glow in the dark. The alarm is loud enough to wake you from your slumber, but not too loud to wake others in the house.

Second purchase of Acctim Smartlite Silent Sweeper Alarm Clock, first one got "bounced" during baggage handling, light working, but no clock movement. As soon as back home (UK) bought replacement, super swift delivery, clock does everything in description, Silent Sweep being why we bought this item, it really is! Great timekeeper, lighting just right, price unbeatable. On the downside, I managed to fix simple fault caused in baggage handling, so will not be buying another clock as I would have if first purchase unrepairable!! Sorry Acctim, but many thanks for 2 fantastic clocks. Buy this clock, you won't regret it.

10.7.2011

I wanted a travel alarm clock that I could see at night. Although this isn't marketed as a travel clock it isn't so big and the smartlite is marvellous, easily bright enough to see in a completely dark room but not so bright as to keep you awake. Some people complained of the quickly ascending alarm tone but if you want an alarm that wakes you up then this will do it. Also in daylight (or with the Smartlite turned off) it has a clear easily read clock face. My only bugbear is that the alrm set knob is a little tricky to turn but that wouldn't stop me buying another.
