I've recently finished Wolfenstein and it is the most stupid, implausible, comic book style game I've ever played. It is also one of the most fun games I've ever played. I've never played the original games but apparently they are classics from several years ago and this game is loosely based on the same storylines. The storyline involves our hero, an American agent, attempting the stop the Nazis in World War II developing special weapons using occult powers. The twist is our hero also has occult powers at his disposal which makes him a cross between a mage and a normal fighter. The game is mainly about combat which is very exhilarating but there is also an element of problem solving using the occult "veil" powers.I found this element reminiscent of some of the "ghostwalking" problem solving in the excellent Prey shooter from a few years ago. There is also a simple RPG element as weapons can be upgraded using cash found or earned throughout the game. This is becoming more common in shooters as the mechanic is similar to that used in both Bioshock 2 and Mass Effect 2.The game apparently had a few bugs on release but these seem to have been patched out - I installed three patches to bring the game to version 1.2 and found no problems. The game also runs well - I ran it at maximum quality settings with vsync enabled and the average framerates were bang on the framerate cap of 60fps even in heavy combat scenes. I cannot remember a single incidence of stutter or hitching or other noticeable slowdown. I've got a fairly high end system but I suspect this will run well on lower spec systems also. It seems to have been well coded as I noticed the maximum load my VRAM was carrying was about 350MB, well below the capacity of most modern cards. There does not seem to be any troublesome memory leak therefore. The graphics are fairly good. Textures are generally clear and good use of depth of field and background blurring avoided pop-in even in outdoor areas. What I particularly appreciated about the graphics was the colours - instead of the ubiquitous browns and greys used in many recent games this is in glorious Technicolor with lovely vibrant greens, blues and reds. Some scenes like those in the Zeppelin and in the archaeological dig are very good graphically. The main criticism is that character models looked a little cartoon-like sometimes but that did in fact fit in with the feel of the game. I experienced a graphical problem in that some dust was not rendered properly and looked more like snow and was a bit distracting. I think this is a software issue but it could be my copy came from a bad batch. However it was not bad enough to ruin my enjoyment.Overall the game is a very enjoyable tongue-in-cheek shooter which reminded me of the first and third (and possibly fourth) Indiana Jones films. The only criticism is the singleplayer is a little short - I was enjoying it so much I wanted more. To extend it make sure you hunt out all the side quests not just the main quests. There is also a multiplayer game included but I cannot comment on this not having played it. Given the low price at which Wolfenstein is now selling it is an extremely good value buy.Hope this helps.

I grew up playing games on the Atari video console, Commodore 64 and the ZX Spectrum. I experienced the thrills of playing Pacman on arcade machines, and Donkey Kong, Asteroids, Space Invaders etc., as each were released. I witnessed the evolution of computer gaming from its inception. And it is from that very history that I now judge Wolfenstein. And my review is only for those who *also* knew gaming from its inception. For we appreciate the amazing advancement in computer graphics and the wizardry created from grinding out millions of lines of machine code.I feel that the modern generation do not have the same appreciation for computer games as the older generation. And I am sure Wolfenstein (in *single player mode* - as I have not played it multi-player, where I do accept that the game suffers) has such mixed reviews not because its a bad game by any means, but because people (especially younger people) just expect too much from a computer game nowadays. After all, the 'Wolfenstein' name is a badge of greatness, and therefore too many people expected this to be the world's greatest computer game, an advancement in gaming terms as much as the original game was. Alas, to judge it as such, is to inadvertently invite disappointment. Wolfenstein, by today's terms, is no ground-breaker.But again, it's still a very enjoyable game. I happily have now spent seven hours of my life playing it and have still 65% of the game to play. All the while I was trying to work out why half the reviewers disliked it. When all I could dislike was as follows: 1) the fact that when you dispersed with enemies and left a map, only to return to it, they were all there again - as if they were never taken out in the first place. 2) I disliked the fact that on standard difficulty level, it was ridiculously easy to advanced through the game. 3) Unless you pay close attention to the map and your objectives, you will find yourself doing a lot of unnecessary wandering around. But these were my only gripes with the game.My advice to older gamers is: give this game a try. It's very enjoyable and it's certainly clear that a lot of work went into its making. I was very impressed with its graphics, story and playability. If any of you can remember a game called "Undying", you'll find a lot of similarities here. For this feels most like a hybrid cross between that and Return to Castle Wolfenstein; a game I also enjoyed greatly.Don't let the naysayers put you off, if you can keep your mind open and forget about it's 'Wolfenstein' name, you'll find a greatly enjoyable game here, at a most temptingly discounted price.

Although I am a huge fan of id Software I am going to give you an unbiased review. I really do not understand why people are giving this game a bad write up. I think it is brilliant. The gameplay is fantastic, the sound is fantastic, the boss battles are possibly the best boss battles I have ever seen in a game to date, they keep you on your toes and keep you guessing. The veil powers are just a joy to beheld. The Black Market is brilliant and adds replay value to the game, as does picking up gold, artefacts and trying to collect all the information. I will definitely be coming back to this game after completing it to see what is different in the next runthrough,I noticed that there are different objectives and secondary objectives which add diversity to the game. i love the fact you return to a central hub after finishing a level and can perform objectives of your choosing. Near the end, before the final level - there is a radio station 'secondary' objective which i recommend doing - very difficult but great fun.Graphically, it is huge step up from id/Raven's previous title Quake 4, and better than Quake Wars: Enemy Territory, at long last the Doom 3 (id Tech 4) engine has been milked of all its worth. Not only that but we can see the gap tighten as the release for Rage looms. The effects in this game are just "wow" and the weapons all perform as they should, it takes a while to find out what combination of weapon and veil powers work best with each enemy/creature but you soon get the hang of it.There are some glitches in the game, one particularly glitch is with the doors, but I'm sure these and the multiplayer issues, extra maps and game modes will be unlocked in future patches. id never normally dissappoint on the patches-side of things. Contrary to what people have said, I don't think there was a lot of hype for this game, I think it was very low-key really. This is not like Call of Duty - Wolfenstein came out long before Call of Duty and to differentiate it, Wolfenstein is more sci-fi, which in some sense makes it more engaging and more realistic as it is a known fact that Heinrich Himmler was interested in the occult - the story is brilliant. All in-all i am really impressed with this game and urge people to buy it. Do not listen to the nay-sayers. And even if you are a little dissappointed somewhat, I'm sure it will tick you over under Modern Warfare 2 comes out! You can do little wrong than play Wolfenstein and while your at it, pick up Return to Castle Wolfenstein as well.

1) I won't review this game for its online-gaming experience, because campaign-centred games are not supposed to be very good multiplayer games. For the last time: RTCW ET was meant to be a seperate game. Comparing Wolfenstein with RTCW ET would be foolish.2) This game was sold as a pimped ID tech 4 (Doom 3, Q4). In that respect, the game is very good looking. I cranked up all the details and pull the anisotropic filtering level full up. To me in 1920x1080 it looked *very* nice.3) Is it too easy? Who told you to let the aiming help turned on? Turn it off for [insert entity] sake. That said, here's my review:This game is simply cool. It has a bad AI, given. But this game is challanging never the less. This game is about killing deformed nazis by the hundreds and having fun doing so. It has a nice gameplay and many different places that are fun to explore and to kill nazis in.As others have wrote before: This game is a sequel to a cool game from 2001 and it feels like "coming home". It's not meant to be innovative. It's meant to be fun, with better graphics than in 2001. And it delivers. If you want multiplayer or another story, buy another title. But, there are a few things I didn't like:a) The self-healing-mechanism is boring. I want healt-packs and food :)b) The check-point-system is annoying. I bought the PC version. Adding a decent savegame-system isn't that hard.four out of five stars is quite good. I don't regret the money I paid.

There is an interesting spread of scores for Wolfenstein - pretty much evenly distributed across the spectrum. Unusual to find something that impresses, makes little impact, or leaves cold in equal measure!Well, I liked it. The PC version for once does not look like a rushed console port - it has good graphics (though not as good as the designer would, I'm sure, like - there are some gorgeous vistas and superb indoor environments, but they are slightly let down by anti-aliasing that could be a lot better), it does not have the typical console restricted field of view, and the controls are crisp and responsive. It is a sympathetic development from Return to Castle Wolfenstein, with nice hints of the music from the earlier game and the return of familiar enemies. It does borrow perhaps a bit too enthusiastically from F.E.A.R., but has its own look and feel. The door is very clearly left open for Wolfenstein 2, though how they will incorporate the Veil powers in a sequel is hard to see.I enjoyed playing through Wolfenstein and recommend it enthusiastically to FPS devotees. I can't comment on its multiplayer aspects (online gaming for me consists of getting killed within 5 seconds and then having some 12 year old telling me what a "n00b" I am), but as a standalone FPS it's well worth a go.

Plus points:-I like the more hub based approach that gives you more choice about the order you do things in. (With Doom 3 there was only ever really one route through the game).Bad points:-I hate auto-save games, or rather ones that don't allow manual saving. You fight all your way through a section, get killed and then have to do the whole thing over again. It's so frustrating. Especially when taking on some of the Boss monsters which are nigh on impossible on the hardest levels.-Don't like the "Call of Duty" style mission compass. What's the point of giving you a large level to explore and then giving you a Sat Nav.-Auto-healing, another bad feature inherited from Call of Duty.I know these games aren't about realism but if you get shot you don't miraculously get better if you hide round the corner for a few seconds. Conserving your health should be part of the game's strategy.-The hero, BJ, has been given a make-under, he now looks like a chimp.Overall Return to Castle Wolfenstein was a hard act to follow and Id have fallen short. Overall the plot felt weaker and the frustration caused by the auto-saving took a lot of the fun out of it.

Even though this maybe isn't what people expected (when it comes to multiplayer), it's still a great game. The graphics are great and the whole new veil/mire-stuff is also cool. A medallion that can make time go slower for you, empower your weapons and protect you. Many cool weapons as well. Unlike Return to CW, where you continously came to new locations all the time and never visited the same place twice, in this game you are mostly in the same town all the time and you'll travel back and forth to the same places many times, and it actually works quite well. Great game*****Tip: If you want a cool assignment, go to "Midtown West" after you have been briefed about the hospital-mission.Open the map of "Midtown West" and you should see a green question mark somewhere on the map. Go there and talk to the person standing there. He will tell you to go to a warehouse. Your next mission after that will be to pay a visit to a local obergruppenführer's home and take him out. I think this is the coolest mission in the game. Classy white uniform on that obergruppenführer.

Well, despite having to spend 3 days working out how to get it to run on my new good spec PC (I eventually had to edit the CFG file to force it to work), I'm giving it 4 stars. As usual, people complain way too much about trivial things. Having lived through a period (late 70s to mid 90s) when games had to be loaded by cassette or floppy disc and were pretty basic at best, a game like Wolfenstein is fine for me. Some complain that its 2 years old in design. So what? It looks like an updated RtCW and thats all I need! It plays fast and smooth on my machine, looks good, has great cut scenes, retains the RtCW music and feel. My only gripe is that it's an obvious console port, due to the fact that you can only autosave by reaching specific waypoints. This isn't too bad as there are plenty of them (unlike Silent Hill 5!) but I prefer to save where and when I want. However, I'm glad I bought it and it doesn't deserve the low ratings it's getting.

If you like shooters and nazi-trash this is your game. Of course if you compare it to the old Wolfenstein games or other current shooters it might not seem so great. But if you just look at the game itself I think its just great fun and thats what its about. The graphics are good. Story and atmosphere are great if you like nazi-trash as I mentioned. The difficulty is absolutely managable for anybody on the lower settings but on the highest setting it should be challenging for about anybody. People complain about the world not really being open. And it isnt. Thats not necessarily a bad thing. In the city you can walk anywhere, but your goals are pretty much always decided for you.But that just makes it a linear shooter. The ways from mission to mission are not really long, so I dont see that as a negative factor. All in all you have a fun and challenging shooter in differnent, cool levels in a great atmosphere. What else do you need?

Well..well...it seems that thumbs are down for this new release, but it aint that bad at all....it just depends of what you compare it with !!! When it takes many years to develope....it cant be all that fresh !!Some people seems to forget just how groundbreakin "koncept Wolfenstein" once were, and therefore this "special universe" also have a very special place in many gamers hearts. Yes...it's nostalgia...but it's like "coming home again"...and that's not so bad after all. If they have changed the concept and the storyline...it would not have been wolfenstein....but just "another FPS-game".Just like "Diablo" this game is pure cult...and bye the way... what do you think will happen when "Diablo 3 " arrives next year ???Thumbs will again go down from all those who just wants games from the future. So if you like the wolfenstein-universe, you will enjoy it and have some great fun again.

I have to say after reading half of the reviews posted here on this board, I was very hesitant to buy this. I have Windows 7, quad core, 64bit with 4GB RAM, 8800gts card, 24" LCD ran at 1920x1600 without any troubles. The game on high difficult is just that, frustrating and about 10 hours of great game. AI runs, hides, flanks, offers good defense and stradegy. I think this game is about one of the most realistic game places yet, unless you like run and guns.Being able to carry a few weapons makes for sensible gameplay and once you unlock the cheats after playing, you'll go through it again just to have fun and explore what you missed.Being a classic gamer of wolfenstein, doom-95, quakes, halflife, etc, this game is all it needs to be. warning - online cheats do not work, so don't think GOD-MODE will save you.If you love the quake arena, shoot, die, respawn, look somewhere else.

I looked at the reviews here and else where but bought it all the same. And you know what? the game is actually a lot of fun. Ok it is no COD4, it doesnt have a immersive storyline or character development but thats not the point of this game. The point, for me at least is escapism, I dont 'feel' like I'm infiltrating the Nazis secret weapon plans, I am just on a bit of a roller coaster of fun, blasting away and checking out the eye candy. The first time you get your hands on a particle canon is just pure fun there is no doubt about it!So my recommendation? buy it shar eit with a mate to half the price and have a bit of fun. forget multiplayer, just give Hilter a bit of grief for until COD6 arrives...

This game starts badly. The controls are horrible. I had to fix the mouse in console and had to mod the game by modding an already available mod to get viewbobbing under control. View bobbing in this game is insane and makes you feel sick. All this took five hours. It was not easy to do. The average gamer could not have done it. But, after all that and the lousy beginning the game turned out to be really good. It just got better the farther you got in the game. I'm glad I had the courage to buy it despite the reviews. Well you can't play it with the normal controls so the bad reviews are justified. Well above average first-person-shooters once you get it running nicely.

This is a decent game but I had a problem getting past a certain part level and it kept freezing. I queried this with Activision and they sent me an automated reply. As it happens I downloaded the first patch that came out and it seemed to fix the problem. I hadn't realised it would fix this problem as the description of the patch didn't relate to my particular issue ! Confusing. A bit dissapointing with the lack of information about the fix, but when you get past this I like the game very much. It has it's own merits but I wouldn't compare it to Return to Castle Wolfenstein as I feel that game has it's own "personality".

8.11.2012

I bought this title thinking it would be at least as good as Return to Castle Wolefenstein - how wrong i was! The new Wolfenstein it much better and it runs happily on my mid-range pc...ok its a 2009 release but so many releases these days expect you to have bundles of cash going spare to afford the latest cpu and gpu. Good old Activision have done wonders - an immersive storline that keeps you on the move with fantastic weapons that are for the most part accurately depicted (MP40, MP43, KAR 98K and Panzerschreck). 10 out of 10.
