Thank u Gaijin and before them: UBISOFT, for bringing a 1st rate combat flight sim to HDTV via the PC... :DCoolest Flight Sim i've ever played! The control scheme for this game is unparalleled, using Direct X and support for Xbox 360 controllers (including the HORI Flight Stick EX2!!!), add a Saitek Combat or Pro-Flight Rudder system, and right hand mouse support for anything other than controlling the hyper-realistic aircraft, this game is nearly perfect...When maxing out the graphics at 1920 x 1080p on a 40 inch Sharp 3D/HDTV, and using a second monitor for background apps like XPADDER to make sure settings are desirable, like map toggle (as opposed to map hold),and mimicking the mouse by using the view stick (hat switch) to pan around without dodging back to the center, XPADDER has been the key to enjoying this game on the PC with all my favourite peripherals connected...I actually have this game for Xbox 360, released before WOP as IL2: Birds of Prey, and is quite fun, yet no Rudder support made buying this version a no-brainer. The graphics in this version are also better, as well as advanced physics; dew drops inside the clouds, cloud texture, takeoffs, and ground scenery, every way an improvement over the console cousin... I just wished they would have offered an add-on for Wings of Steel: the console version of the Pacific WW2 Flight Sim by the same developer - Gaijin! :DOne thing not quite up to par, the engine sounds are not that different from each other, yet in the console version they are, such as a Messerschmitt ME/BF 109 whining out at full RPM (called WEP) with a distinct German engineered sound. I love this! Yet it doesn't seem that the PC version included the extra files to output unique engine sound, so most of the time (with the exception of Bombers) the planes all sound the same. maybe there is a patch i neglected to download, but i don't think so... If anyone knows how to change this, pls comment here. :)Make sure to download all the patches, unless they ALL come with this superb Collector's edition...Enjoy to the fullest with Surround Sound (hint: Put the subwoofer under your flight desk or in back of the rudders, it will vibrate like an engine!), HORI, LOGITECH, or SAITEK flight tech + rudders, and 40+ inch LED or Plasma!-thomasOh, and one last thing, the multiplayer servers from 2010 may no longer work outside of the UK or EUROPE, cause no matter what, i can't get online to serve my region. :/

Graphically i think this game is great. There are a huge number of aircraft and the differences are noticable. The campaign may be short but go into single missions and see there are loads to keep you occupied. Theres also a hanger mode and useful encyclopedia with tips.As per other reviews the ground scenary is stunning. Flying in cockpit gets you some great effect such as rain and oil. The game is pre programmed and came be custimosed well with a Thrustmaster Hotas X.Sounds are ok, althought the commands are repetative. The key thing for me that makes this a must have is that you get the occasional epic moment in combat. A lot of flight sims will not see you able to fly behind other fighters and shoot them down, where as the physics of this one- the speed, enemy AI atc are such that you can get relaistic dog fights and of course with a target camera (which keeps your view on the enmy selected so you can orientate yourself to them), you get some stunning visuals. The only negatives/let downs are quite dull combat at times. Getting into a fight or within range of another aircraft can take too much time. They ruined the play with the stall feature and having to use the boost to pul of practically any manouver. This for me makes playing at realistic or simulation unenjoable. Further to this its a shame you cant add the black out effects and other more relaistic modes to the arcade setting. All in all this works well with lots of options (the training feature where you customize your own battles will keep you entertained indefinately), without silly modern slo mo style gaming makes this a must have Flight Sim.

Pretty good..loading of game originally "messy" and you need to work on it to get full benefit..setting up of controls etc timeconsuming, and some games on the list need additional purchase, not quite clear how! General good graphics etc...worththe hassle..and price in the end.

This game really is the best WW2 combat flight sim around today. The single player and multiplayer modes are excellent.Ignore the warnings about the DRM - it's fine. The only game that can rival this is the forthcoming 'World of Planes' being made by the same team.

Great game loads of choice planes wise and some great missions. Made better by the fact you can choose either Flight Simulator mode (which is very difficult) or just arcade mode which is still hard but feels more like an FPS. recommended,
