This is a review of the "WDBFKT0040BGY-WESN" model of the "My Passport Ultra" 4 TB in the black/grey colour.I bought this portable HDD as it was on special offer (not from Amazon this time!) and I needed a second drive to use as an offsite backup and to keep data with me when working from home. On offer, it was cheaper than the non-Ultra version that I have bought and used previously. I couldn't find much difference in specs between the Ultra and standard versions, except the design of the case and apparently the Ultra comes with some sort of extra software plugin to download photos etc. direct from your social media accounts. I bought it only because it was cheaper than teh standard version at the time.Visual design:Firstly,to be clear, the case is "metallic" (i.e. a shiny gloss metallic painted finish) and NOT metal (it is plastic!). I think the WD website and description is a bit misleading there. The design itself you'll either love or hate, but the big problem with the metallic finish is that it picks up greasy finger prints really easily so is a pain to keep clean. I have the standard version too in the funky orange colour, and that has no problems with finger prints. So I would go for the standard version which comes in a choice of bright colours. I guess this does look a bit cooler / more stylish / ,more expensive / more professional though. In Use:Works great, pretty fast, no problems for me with connection. Comes with the various WD software and utilities saved on the drive itself, so easy to install and setup. For backup, I prefer to use "Allways Sync" as I trust it with making an exact copy of my data with fuss. I like the WD security software. Set as password to encrypt the drive and all its contents, so your data is safe if lost. The finder can still wipe the drive and use it, but they can't get to your data. Similarly, if you forget the password, then apparently not even WD can restore your data. You can set the drive to auto unlock on your main computers so just plug it in and go. On other computers, a drive icon appears when you plugin the drive for the first time. You click this to open a little app to enter the password, then the main drive appears in file manager. So the drive contents are completely hidden until the correct password is entered. Seems to work well for me.Summary:Great drive, works well, fast and straightforward to use. However, don't pay extra for the Ultra version (unless you really want the extra software included for downloading from social media) or you really like the design. Remember the case is "metallic" finished and NOT METAL. The standard version is usually cheaper, same spec's and performance, and the case stays clean. The finger print issue on the Ultra version makes it look very grubby very soon!Rating of four stars, one star deducted for higher price (than standard version) and grubby finger marks issue.Cases:If you buy the 4Tb version, note that it is much thicker then the smaller capacities and it is hard to find a protective case to fit. On Amazon, most cases that say they fit the WD Passport drives are only talking about the smaller size units, not the fat 4Tb one.

Portable hard drives are a very useful addition to a laptop and even more so for the ultra-compact portables that tend to have storage limited to 128 or 256 GB SSD. Fortunately, most have one or more USB 3.0 ports. Portable hard drives tend to have short cables - 30-45 cm is typical and a short extension cable (not included) may be useful in some situations.Whether used to store current downloads or as a temporary storage for media files to be watched, read or listened to on a journey or on holiday or for a presentation they are very useful. 4 TB is usefully large and allows considerable freedom as how their application. The enclosure feels as if it is all-plastic but is supposedly partly metal to aid cooling.Prices have fallen and this capacity is currently very affordable. The drive will be used mostly, as it has been thus far, to transfer data from the ultrabook to my PC or in the reverse direction. At other times, it will be used to store a selection of movies and/or tracks using the ultrabook as a media player. Other than case colour and capacity, it is identical in form and function to 1TB and 2TB versions also owned and frequently used. Currently, the 1TB drive is connected to a PVR to expand its storage capacity. Reliability of both older drives to date has been total and problem-free in the 2 years or so of ownership. Previously, both were used to regularly transfer data between machines and sites; the lack of a power pack was a major boon in relation to the larger 3.5-inch drives and enclosures previously used for that purpose. This is pocket-sized and light; the larger 3.5-inch units are definitely not!To prevent scratches to the finish, personal preference is to add a carry case which also ensures a degree of protection against knocks and drops.

Review of the WD 4TB My Passport (2016) model. The photographs show the previous generation (left most in all pictures) beside this new generation of drive (rightmost drive). I'm a long time user of WD passport external usb hard drives. This is the first 4TB I've bought, used for a backup of a NAS.Capacity + Speeds:This is a USB3 hard drive, giving very fast speeds. Attached are screenshots from a benchmark utility, showing 116MB/s read 107MB/s write. For comparison, the previous generation (2TB) got 112MB/s read and 100MB/s write, so a slight improvement. The formatted capacity is 3.63 TB.The enclosure/case:The case is solid. It is a bit more fancy than previous WD My Passports, and a little bigger.Yet, it remains a solid construction and has a feeling of durability. The LED light on the back is now a horizontal slot which has a softer light compared to the previous generation drives.Comparing to the previous generation, the case is ever so slightly larger, but there really isn't much in it. See the photos. I prefer the new case as it allows multiple drives to be set on top of each other, whereas the previous generation was slightly rounded so they tended to slide off each other.Included in the box / software:The drive comes with a USB3 cable. You also get the WD Drive Utilities, Encryption software and Backup software. However, after checking the drive with the WD Utilities to ensure it survived transport safely, I wiped the drive for my own use. You can always grab a copy of the software from WD's homepage in the future.Overall, this seems like a great drive. Only time will tell how reliable it is, but it does come with a 2 year warranty as standard. This can be extended by a year if you purchase WD Care.

One of the things that we all run into from time to time is file transfers that are bigger than the tiny thumb drives. I was offered this by Amazon and my initial idea was to use it for larger file transfers that I need to make from time to time with video footage I record with my GH4. For this function it is fantastic! Fast enough to plug in, begin transfer and walk away. 4TB is plenty for what I need. Now some of the issues I have with this.First off I am not using this as a backup like time machine. I did not bother installing any of the software that came with it. Out of the box speeds are good (see the pics). I used USB 3 ports for all of my tests. The older versions of these cases came with a standard internal SATA hard drive and a small adapter that allowed for power and data to be transferred over to the computer. I opened this case up to see if I could possibly swap in an SSD for speed comparison testing. Once I got the case open I found that this hard drive uses a proprietary circuit board built into the hard drive. The USB port you see on the back of the case is physically built into the hard drive. This is beneficial for a number of reasons but for swapping drives (which do fail over time) it leaves this to be a throwaway item upon the death of the drive.Pros:+ easy to install and use even without installing the software+ Light and very small form factor means highly transportable for work/school+ Decent transfer speedsCons- Drive is not upgradeable nor swappable due to internal circuit boardOverall this is a fine disk to have as a backup drive or to use to transfer large files. Kind of strange that the case is not reuseable. Thanks for reading!

Bought mine from another seller as unfortunately the Amazon delivery was taking too long and I got it a shade cheaper.Just a few early observations:- It's not the most portable drive you'll find on the market, one to put in a coat pocket, though to get 4TB on a portable drive is quite spectacular, can't really complain.- It's a quick drive, not consistent fast speeds compared to the Seagate equivalent, but you get in and around 85MBps - 110MBps transferring video files across, mine was jumping round 30MBps - 40MBps for image files, which brings me too...- Small file speeds... they are very good, something these types of external drives aren't particularly renown for. If I open a folder with images in,they load quickly, and unzipping files doesn't take an eternity either.- There's software loaded onto the drive which you can chose to install or remove. Note the WD Utilities software allows you to wipe the drive, do a disk check and toggle whether you want the drive to sleep after a certain amount of time. All in all, very happy... so why not 5 stars? Heat issues. I'll need more testing with it, but after transferring over 200GB of data to it the drive read 50 degrees on HD Sentinel. For a 5400rpm USB powered drive that's quite high IMO, the old Seagate ones with a power brick were notorious for hitting those kinds of temps, and my previously mentioned Toshiba drive rarely gets near 45 with the same data transfer. Just be wary if you do plan to use this to back up data, it will get hot quite quickly, though shouldn't be too much an issue if you're transferring the odd file here and there.

This is my forth portable HDD in the last few years. My first portable HDD was a 1TB seagate which is nice and compact and still works well, but it is just not spacious enough. Just over a year ago I bought another seagate with 2TB of space. Unfortunately that drive failed a few month later. This spring I bought 2 TB My Passport in plastic enclosure. It was not as fast as seagate (115mb/s vs 130 mb/s) but seamed to be more sturdy. I later decided to buy more spacious 4TB and gave 2TB drive to my sister. I like semi-metal design of the ultra model and I paid $10 more over plastic model merely because of the look. Both metal and plastic models catch fingerprints easily, especially if you use hand lotion.Feature-wise my passport and my passport ultra are almost identical, except for certain software features that are quite marginal in my opinion. Reading and writing speeds are the same on both 4TB Ultra and 2TB my passport. Overall I like using my new WD my passport, and I like that it provides encryption feature. I am not sure that it is 100% reliable but at least it gives me peace of mind that my data won't be readily accessible to strangers in case the drive gets lost. Also I found a python script on GitHub that allows to unlock the drive on Linux systems, which is a major deal for me. For this reason I currently prefer WD over my old seagate with which I always had to choose between accessibility on Linux and encryption with microsoft's bitlocker.I also bought AmazonBasics Hard Carrying Case for this drive and it fits quite well

UPDATE: After a year's use, I've detected a noticeable lag in heavy games, to the point where I've had to transfer demanding games to the system storage to play them smoothly. I've used crystaldisk to check the hard drive health and says it remains in 'good' health. I'm not sure if this issue is universal or to do with this particular hard drive. In short, an external SSD would be a better option with a PS4.I've been a long-time user of Western Digital Hard Drive and I can safely say this has not let me down. After having bad experiences with Seagate drives, I've been using Western Digital Drives and, knock-on-wood, have had no issues with them since.I bought this particular drive for PS4 storage to overcome the frustrating hassle of downloading, deleting and redownloading games to fit new games. The design may not be so important as the durability of this product but I really feel the splash of colour and the sleek crossed design adds character to a simplistic product. The hard drive was easy to reformat for the PS4 after plugging in and was able to immediately move applications and download new content to the drive. Its been over three months since purchase, with the drive going through hours of play and transfers and have faced no issues. Importantly too, the transfer speeds have not let down as I've found games to load, download or transfer at the same speed or quicker than the system's internal drive.Overall, highly recommend Western Digital for anyone looking for a reliable drive.

Many don't know the WD brand name today but I do. WD is still one of the best manufacturers of Hard Disk Staorage. Before the rebranding, WD was known as "Western Digital" and sadly they weren't very good at other computer hardware and that is where they faced problems. However, when it came to Hard Disk Drives, Western Digital were one of the best known (and the most expensive). Due to WD not getting ahead in other areas and still being costly to buy, even during the last recession (credit crunch / economic crisis) they lost a lot of market share. They then rebranded and wisely reviewed their prices thus WD today are now competitively priced and still have the reputation of their reliability. So, all in all, as this portable HDD is doing as it is designed to do and is highly likely to last many, many years, I do recommend this Portable Hard Drive. It is easy to use, just "Plug and Play" with most Windows systems otherwise just follow the instructions for formatting. Remember that if it is formatted for a Playstation, it cannot be used for any other devices but if it is formatted for the XBox One series of Games Consoles, files such as music, photos and videos can be accessed via PCs and Windows laptops but any games can still only be read by the XBox. Personally, if I needed another portable HDD, I would certainly buy this again so I recommend that you buy it as it does the job and if looked after it will continue doing the job for many years to come.

I've only been using this for a few days, so I can't vouch for its reliability but first impressions are good.Although I buy all my internal drives from WD, I've never really liked their external USB offerings. What initially attracted me to this version (4TB/RED) was the price, it being one of the lower priced 4TB USB3 drives. It came already formatted as NTFS (although I've just realised that I neglected to check the cluster size...DOH!) and was ready to go.So far, I've copied about 2.5TB to this drive without any dramas whatsoever. Copying from another USB3 source, overall transfer speeds ranged from 75-95MBps, which is pretty much what I'd expect.Physically, it's awful. The case looks like it's been created by somebody working blindfolded; the half smooth/half rippled effect is surely a result of a drunken bet, rather than thoughtful design. Also, the red colour bears little resemblance to the product images. Rather than the deep, almost metallic looking red in the photos, the actual drive is almost pink and the material is a VERY cheap looking plastic. It comes complete with a (colour matched) short USB cable but the USB connector on the drive itself is the 'Micro B' variety, which means (if your cable collection is anything like mine) you'll be limited to using this same cable.Apart from the horrible aesthetics (and annoying 'Micro B' port), I'm happy with it so far.

portable hard drives keep getting smaller, lower-powered, and higher in capacity along with lower pricesthis is a win-win for the consumerthis 4TB drive formatted in less than a minute under OS X Sierra using the HFS journaled file system, and i was able to copy 24,000 files via my Macbook Air's USB 3.0 port in less than 25 minutesi keep backups of important data on 128GB thumb drives down here in hurricane country, and generally just evacuate and leave the computers behind, as there is no important data on the internal filesystems - of course, i also keep tertiary backups in my briefcase of important documents(in more than 40 years of using personal computers and writing nearly two dozen books i have never lost any important files - i feel i'm pretty lucky, but i always practiced safe computing - using UNIX, Apple operating systems and GNU/Linux have also ensured this safety)using this hard drive i'll be able to take more data with me, such as my extensive ebook and music library, and scans of family photos and other documents (videos, such as movies, no longer need to be stored because most of the content is available online)this is a great little drive to keep on hand - i don't know if i'd rely on it for 24/7/365 operation, but for backups and portability it can't be beat!thanks, WD!

This is a sleek and fancy looking hard drive. It works with USB 3.0, but is also compatible with 2.0. Using 3.0, I get really good speeds, and photos and documents transfer at a fast rate. The hard drive includes the software WD Discovery. The software allows you to back up photos from Amazon, Facebook, Instagram, etc. by logging into your account via the app. It works pretty good when I tried with Amazon. I signed into my account on the app, and it started downloading my photos into a folder it automatically creates in the hard drive. I have a ton of photos so it seems to take forever to pull from the cloud, but I just let it do its thing and walk away. It didn't work for Google Photos, but does with Google Drive. It's a small profile, about the size of two iPhone 6s stacked on top of each other. The split metal/plastic look is futuristic. It does have a spinning drive so you will hear the noise of it working if you put your ear to it, but still pretty silent. Windows 10 instantly recognized the drive and set it up quickly. You can also reformat it to HFS+J if you want to use it with a MAC. It turns on every time I plug it in, and I have had no problems with it so far. You can never back up enough so you want to make sure you do it frequently. A great looking device and works well. I like it.

This has served its purpose well already. Was unsure as to whether to buy it given some negative reviews but I found that all the drives had similar levels of some negatives. [they just don't make 'em like they used to any more I guess]. I plumped for this because my son has one of the older versions and it has served him very well for years. One of the scathing reviews said the older ones are better and that these new ones are not as reliable.I bought this just to have a proper Time Machine backup. Had to format the drive for Mac use. There was no obvious instructions on how to do this so I did contact Western Digital. They sent me a link to the instructions online. Was easy enough to do I guess. My macbook played up a few months later refusing to boot up properly etc. and very very very slow. Hard drive partially died. Luckily I had my Passport at the ready! Was able to have a new hard drive installed and all my goodies nicely restored to the new drive. I'm very happy with this. As for its longevity - time alone will tell. (I did also copy all my documents to a USB zip drive in case the Passport did not deliver like some reviewers had said. My advice: whichever product you buy/use for backup always have another recent copy at least of your essential files you don't want to lose.

I have a NAS which has two drives inside and set in a raid formation to save the data if one disc fails. I started to realise its more likely the whole NAS could be damaged by energy surge, water damage or being dropped than the drive corrupting. I decided on getting this drive as my NAS has two WD red drives and I think it's the best company to trust with hard drives.Synology wants you to use their backup feature called hyper drive but it means you can't access the files without using synology software. I didn't like this so simply plugged this drive in to the NAS and copied all files a folder at a time to the hard drive. The transfer rate was really speedy and I got 2TB copied in a few hours (doing it a top level folder at a time). This has already came in handy for transferring songs to my laptop (it doesn't need it's own power source which is great for a drive of this size) and restoring some folders that I deleted by accident off the NAS (the two disc raid format doesn't help if you remove files yourself!). The 2 year warranty is a great extra with this item too.Measures in at a tiny 10cm x 8cm x 2cm and transfers for me at 20MB/sThis drive is stored in my loft to increase the safety of my data (my Simpsons collection will never die)Hope my review was helpful.

The Western Digital passport range of portable hard drives comes back year after year with slight improvements on the classic device. But in a world where ever expandable cloud storage reigns supreme, is there still a space for this classic product? While the storage may have expanded, most other things remain the same about the passport range. The build quality of the item is solid, the drive itself compact and only a small feeling of movement when you connect to your computer. No particularly fancy features here, as it's just a classic plug in and load files from your computer, games console or similar. As with previous models there is also some software included on the drive for backing up,though with plenty of alternatives out there you might want to shop around without opting for the default. I had this plugged into my router for use as network storage with no issues, uploading and downloading files was straightforward and fast.Overall, if the cloud is just not for you or you have sensitive or large data you want to keep on site this portable hard drive is a great way to do it. It may not be rugged or wireless on its own but what it does do it does do well and therefore comes recommended from me.

I have purchased many of these drives over the years. Of these, only two have failed on me. One of which was not a “My Passport” Drive but a “My Book” desktop Drive. It is my opinion that that dive simply died due to its age. The other, I cannot say because I have Passport Drives that were older than that one and are still working well. Perhaps that one was, somehow, not constructed or manufactured as well.I once heard it said… don’t free up space, just buy more. Now, as drive capacity becomes larger and larger, while such is necessary as file sizes are also increasing at a seemingly comparable rate, it does, nevertheless, appear that is now the ebb and flow…. buy more space (finances permitting of course).I, honestly, have data going back decades… University essays and such, backups for the backups, it’s ridiculous! Yet, here we are. In case you were wondering, no I do not work for the government so my data is not that important. But, as is the nature of these things, it’s the personal nature that creates the importance. Or, perhaps, I am simply becoming a data Hoarder, if there is such a thing. I guess it’s all in good fun. In any case, for this purpose, I am…still Western Digital loyal.
