Having read the other (4) reviews, I knew it was 50/50 that this game would work. And after installing and attempting to run I was almost on side that it wouldn't work. However I was able to fix the issue and the game runs great now! Which I'm very excited about because it's exactly like the orginaly with better graphics and some newer buildings, but with all the good elements left in tact.=================================================================================================================================OK, if you who can't get it working: (I'm going to list all the possibilities to solve your issue as well as what I actually did)Install the game while running as an administrator (I didn't have to do this)After installation: restart your computer (you must do this,it should even prompt you)Two icons should appear on your desktop after the restart(assuming you allowed shortcuts), the game itself and a map editorRun the game by ejecting it from your drive and re-inserting (wait for auto-play to pop up) (I didn't have to do this)I received an error while attempting to run the game that "SecuROM could not valid the CD in the alloted time period" and after several more attempts at running it the same error would occur. To fix, I ran the map editor and while the editor was loading up I simply ran the game as well. SecuROM was able to validate the game and now doesn't check anymore and I'm able to play the game whenever I want.Another way to allow SecuROM to validate is: go to your computer, click on your CD/DVD drive, right click, select properties, go under the hardware tab, select the hardware, click properties, go under the details tab, and select the appropriate property under the device description (pull down bar). I wish I would've wrote down which one it was. Fortunately if that error is flagged you can follow the link and the SecuROM website will have the device list name that you have to change it to.--I'm running the game on Windows 7=================================================================================================================================Haha, So that was a long explaination just to get the game working and I haven't even talked about the game yet. But if you've played the old version and loved it, then it's worth going through those steps to get it working.Gameplay: You start off with a main building and have to expand outward while gathering resources and materials to fund your expansion. The goal is to destroy your opponent's main building by pushing his boundaries back over him.In the process you can construct a ton of other buildings that gather, or convert resources into usable goods. An example is a pig farm produces pigs which can be sent to the butcher, which send the meat off to feed the workers in the mines, but the pig farm itself needs grain and water to feed the pigs. As you can see everthing kind of correlates togethor. Settlers has a goods transportation system. Basically everything is transported along the roads and the spacing of flags along those roads determines how fast the goods will be transported along them.Free Play: Play your own create maps, or the ones that come with the game. Choose your goal for the map: detroy all enemies; control 90% of the land; obtain 100 gold coins.Campaign: Played through the campaign; surprisingly, it is not a tutorial of how to play, actually has a storyline, and a goal. Not a great storyline, but at least there is one. The maps are detailed and some are quite challenging. Enjoyed the campaign almost as much as creating my own maps and playing on them.Tutorial: Once I figured out the campaign was not a tutorial, searched around and found this neat little option. This will teach you how to play. The game has multiple difficulty levels for campaign and freeplay. You can save whenever you need to.Has an auto-save feature. And you can even set the time intervals for which it autosaves! (Thought that was awesome!)Comes with a map editor so you can build and play on your own levels.Freeplay can have up to 8 computer players (teamed with you, against you, free-for-all)Over 30 different buildingsAble to zoom down to ground level and build, or just watch your settlers work.Game comes with SecuROM, a DRM tool which requires you to type in an access code upon installing the game and requires the CD to be in when you play the game. Basically you can't install it on multiple computers, or let your little brother play at the same time as you. Don't worry, if you get another computer or have to re-install simply use the revoke tool on the computer which is was installed on originally.Rating:Graphics- 3 out of 5 (Game is for XP, so graphics aren't great, but the details are good)Sound- 5 out of 5 (Good music, realistic building/working/gathering sounds, nice background noise: birds, crickets, etc)Gameplay- 5 out of 5 (Kept everything like the original! LOVE it!)Overall it's great. I docked a star for SecuROM. I don't think customers should have to struggle to install a game. And I don't think anything should limit the use of a product that SOMEONE PAID FOR. F you DRMs.***Don't like my review? Tell me why not by leaving a comment. I started playing The Settlers back in the early '90s when it came out for the Commodore Amiga (Die Siedler). Hours and hours were spent playing the first game. Settlers II came out a few years later and upped the ante. Even more hours were spent on II. The graphics were improved and the game play was a bit more complex. I loved the first two versions. Settlers III came out a few years later and they changed the format of the game and I didn't care for the refinements. I've kept The Settlers and Settlers II all of these years and would play them via DosBox on my newer machines. I was delighted to see that Bluebyte went back into the archive and remade Settlers II using the original format of the game but with added graphics enhancements. While I was waiting on Amazon to get this sent out (the order sat in their warehouse for 4 days before they shipped), I pulled down the demo version and got used to the updated controls and interface. When the game finally did arrive, it did not disappoint. It's running nicely on my Win7 machine and I didn't need any fancy graphics cards or anything else. Well done revision of the game and I can't wait to explore the next island.Updated: 5/19/11: I just wanted to update this now that I've had the game for a few weeks and was able to complete the 10 island single player campaign mode. First, the enhanced graphics are nice, but I found that the novelty of them wore off after the first 5 minutes of play. I spend all of my time in "zoomed out" mode so I can see as much of the land as I can. As for strategies, I try to make work zones within my territory -- foresters/wood cutters/sawmills all in one zone... farms/pig farms/slaughter houses in another zone (if possible -- depends on the terrain and available land that can sustain farms)... also a 'metal' zone with iron smelter/mint/smithy/metalworks. With rare exception, I don't build catapults as they waste precious stone and they are very inaccurate. I only build Strongholds close to the enemy borders. Once you have a feeling which way you need to I prioritize food and building materials so that my ore miners are well fed (and produce lots of ore) and my buildings get built quickly. I make a lot of farms, fisheries, and wells. I prefer to use my grain on pig farms, and tend to not build many mills/bakeries unless the level doesn't offer pig farms. Campaign mode can be completed without making a single harbor/shipyard, so don't waste the time/supplies chasing after them. Unless I am approaching the enemy territory, I build guard houses as they are quick to build and don't consume large quantities of stone. I will later go back and expand them into watchtowers when my stone supply can handle it and by then I have additional soldiers being generated and coins being minted. Everything I do in the game centers around making gold coins to get my army strength built -- without an army of generals, the Chinese will tear you up. This is a great game and takes some planning to succeed. One wrong move can cost you the game - the Chinese in the game can be brutal enemies.Updated 01/21/15 - I figured I'd take some time and update this (even though I'm sure no one will ever read it) -- I recently pulled this game back out and completed it for a second time. I should note that some levels require you to expand your territory at a rapid rate (especially true on levels 9 & 10) otherwise the opposing armies will either a) build up troops and attack you relentlessly or b) occupy all of the available sites to build a harbor effectively ending any shot you have at completing the level. Level 10 is the one level where I will build a catapult or two so that I can reduce enemy troop levels without attack. This will allow me to have less defenders to deal with once I do decide to make my move and blitz through enemy territory. Running through the game again reinforced my opinion of how wonderfully fun and challenging this game is.

I love this version of the game. All the playability of the original, but with updated graphics, and no bugs.seen some people complaining about the amount of visible play area. So long as you play this game with a fairy high resolution setting you will see enough of the play area, if you play on low res, you will only get to see a small play area, and it becomes difficult to play.Sadly I can only play it on my old PC running windows XP. On a windows 7 PC it refuses to work, even with XP emulation mode active. Best I can get is audio with a black screen. With any luck there will be a patch for this. (if anyone has managed to get this working on windows 7 I be very grateful for help.Great fun,and challenging game that will steal hours of your life away, but as of 23/02/12 not for windows 7

Old Review - "Loved the game when I played the original. Just bought this and can't play it at all. Can't get it to play on a laptop at work or on the new netbook I purchased last month. Both run XP. It loaded on the laptop and starts, but has some fatal error before play starts and it crashes. On the netbook, it loaded originally, but won't start up at all. I noticed a note in the box that says DRM may prevent the disc from loading in a CD-R or DVD-R drive. Looked at some of the online posts to see if I could figure out the problem and got nothing. Not saying don't buy this, because it has obviously worked for some, but I struck out.Just know what you may be getting into."New Review - I bought a computer last year with Windows 7 and the game loaded and played perfectly. It was beautiful.

I still play this game frequently. The little people and the villages are delightful as they go about their business and I enjoy the challenges of the levels and the sandbox play. It is never boring! The Settlers has been a franchise I have treasured since the first days that the demo was circulated around the 'New' internet. Thanks for this retrospective game and all the fun I've had with it!

Heyyo, I LOVE SETTLERS! Settlers II is definitely still my favorite and it sucks that the remake never came to retail here in North America. Thanks to Amazon though? I finally got my hands on this beauty. It's much of the same that made the original Settlers II so fantastic, but with updated beautiful 3D graphics and a new faction (the Japanese).
