I have used one of these for many years for use on building sites. It obviously serves to check verticals and horizontal levels but the great advantage of this level is the pitch gauge; this is especially useful for surveys, giving accurate readings for roof and stair pitches, even for rough readings of land gradients when used with a longer batten. The required angle is determined by placing the body of the level onto the pitched member, and then by rotating the ring until the enclosed vial shows level. You then read the angle straight off the graduated scale. I feel that with care, accuracy can be gauged to approximately 1/2 a degree.I do have two reservations: the first is that,on my very old example, the frame holding the main, fixed vial sits very slightly above the surface of the body so the level cannot be used upside down, though in practice this is never needed. The second is that to 'lock' the rotating phial it is necessary to gently squeeze the ring back into its seating once the level has been established, and this can be a bit fiddly. You only need to do this if you are measuring in an awkward place or in bad light where you can not read the calibrated scale directly, so this is a minor consideration.This level has been rattling around in my work bag for between ten and fifteen years and it is still accurate. Despite the small reservations noted, this level is convenient, straightforward to use, accurate and overall, a brilliant piece of kit I would not be without.
