There seem to be two main brands on the market for everyday use: Stanley and Stabila. I think this is the only Stanley model that really competes with Stabila. This is the Fatmax Pro version (see the manufacturer’s reference number), and it seems it can come with Extreme written on it or not (latterly not, I think). Currently the Stanley website advertises three types of spirit level: a simple box section level and a girder style, and this one which is the strongest of the three. It’s a reinforced box section, with shoulders and ribs. Stabila does three box section levels (a simple box, a box with shoulders, and a reinforced box with shoulders and ribs), and their girder style levels are stronger (not weaker)than the reinforced box (as you might expect).The Stanley 043624 or 043636 (and so on, according to the length in inches) competes with the Stabila 196-2. The Stanley is cheaper usually. They both have the same accuracy. Whether the metal in the Stabila is stronger I cannot tell, but they both look about the same. I did see a Stanley promotional video which showed a cross-section that seemed to indicate that there was an internal metal “baffle” (the very expensive Stabila R Type has a number of them), a sort of “false floor” running the full length, and that would make the Stanley stronger; but, when I took the handle off to check, it wasn’t there. Personally, I have had occasional problems with the squared vial of the Stabila. I found it difficult to judge exactly where the bubble was when looking at a 45 degree angle (i.e. through the corner of the rectangular vial block), and had to reposition myself (and the work!). The Stanley has a rounded vial, and it looks the same whichever way you look at it.All of the good models are accurate to 0.5mm/m, so I suppose that the issue in making your choice is only how robust you need the level to be for it to maintain its accuracy in the working environment.

Working as a bricklayer, there are two tools most use. Marshalltown trowels and Stabila levels. This is the first time I've ventured away from a Stabila, and I'm more than happy with this level.I really like the handles built into this level, and will want them in any other levels I purchase. My old Stabila 96-2 didn't have them, (but there is a Stabila model that does).The bubbles in the level are certainly different visually, but I think I prefer them, and the accuracy is spot on.These levels are sold as being very strong and able to withstand abuse. From what I've seen and felt it should be as strong as a stabila, but testing their strength is not how you use a level.I don't like the way Stanley package the tool.It leaves a couple of holes in one of the end stops, and this is an entry point for crap into the level body. This also cause a slight problem when I pulled the packaging off and part of it broke off and was left rattling inside the level body. (If this happens, remove one of the handles to get the bits out, don't try to remove the end stop.)Of course the big plus over Stabila levels is the price. I certainly don't feel like I've got a significantly poorer product, but would suggest Stabilas are better, just not twice the price better.All in all, a very good level, at a very good price. (Plenty of level for the amateur).

I was looking for a lengthy level to put up a long curtain pole and this fit the bill, strong, durable and more importantly accurate. Stanley are really demonstrating what they do best here and the item should help me through future projects where such a tool is needed. This pro level looks like it can take a battering and will come out the other still shiny and new.Solid acrylic viles to keep them intact even when drops, large viles for easy viewing, rubber bumpers, the two well positioned handles are comfortable and good send when you have this thing above your head and considering the size pretty light for a compete peewee like myself.If you are a Prime customer it will be the best £23 you have ever spent,but even if you are not a Prime customer this tool wins hands down even over Stabila for design, price and features. Some reviews state that this is not a Stanley Fatmax Pro level......well wrong.....this is a pro level as listed and this has been confirmed with Stanley. I think some people are getting confused with the Stanley Fatmax Xtreme level which is a different product.

Wish I had found this level sooner as I always had bad results with cheaper versions from other brands. Firstly this is very light weight and feels good in your hand so makes it very comfortable when checking level on the ground, or when on ladders and even hard to reach places. Secondly the clarity is great as you can clearly see if anything is off and correct as you go along. Overall i think this is a must have for Professionals and Diy'ers as this has helped save me money having to hire anyone else in to carry out small home projects which I have comfortably been able to do myself now! Highly recommend!

These levels are brilliant, especially if you can get them for the right price. They really are strong and stable and look really well made. I have several different lengths. The only downside is that the milled aluminium surface (top and bottom) stain if cement gets on them - pretty inevitable if you're in a building environment: not a big issue unless you're really fussy about keeping your tools looking great. So, if you use it near cement, clean it off quick and DON'T let it set on it! That's the reason for four rather than five stars.

I admit I haven't used it in anger yet, but the level feels very good in the hand, it has some weight, the bubbles are very easy to see, and there are two plumbing bubbles - not one of those silly 45 degree ones, which indicate a DIY tool with absolute certainty. Needless to say I have checked it for accuracy. I have a great deal of confidence in this tool and if it turns out to be misplaced I will return to this review and update it. I am a qualified carpenter and joiner so I will give the level a proper trial.

Realised too late my old level had been used as a crowbar - went out and got a 2 new ones (24" and 48") restarted and realised both talking different languages - one was Chinese other was Eastern Bloc origin - both wrong - Enough is enough so went to Amazon for a proper level by Stanley Fatmax. Dearer than the others but absolutely accurate, strong and vials are magnified and so clear to read. Fabulous level and forever.

I have heard some people mention that the Fatmax Levels have gotten progressively lesser in quality and may not be what they once were, I have never owned one before, I am happy with the accuracy and quality. They are relatively lightweight but not in a negative way as it makes them comfortable to handle. The construction appears to be strong and with care I am hoping to get many years of use from this

I have been satisfied with the 600mm level and having broken my previous 1200mm level needed another. I looked at Stabila levels at Toolstation but decided that the handgrip holes on the Fat Max, which the Stabila lack, made it more useful and the 600 Fat Max had been perfectly good so the 1200 version should be just as satisfactory. As a surveyor, a reliable but portable level is an essential tool.

Very well built, machined edge on both sides so can be used in either orientation. Great for doing radiators, curtain rails, plasterboard walls (to check studs etc) and very handy for checking for dips and inconsistencies in walls over long 2M distances.I've found myself reaching for this level a lot more than my cheaper 1.8m level (from a different brand) as It's just that good.

Very robust construction. Perfect for verticality.Just a fraction of a millimetre off for level in 592 mm length.Easily corrected with magic tape and marker pen over bubble if you really need to be exact.Rubber boot at one end can be removed so that vertical or level line can be marked accurately on surface normal to axis of level.

The Stanley brand is synonymous with quality and this level is certainly that. The level is very well made and looks and feels very sturdy. The ends of the level are encased in rubber to protect it against bumps and drops. The handle is also rubberised for extra grip. The vials are large and easy to read. Recommended.

This is an excellent all-round box beam level. The vials are larger than on my previous level, which was a B&Q cheap job, and very easy to read.The rubber end grips do a pretty good job on smooth surfaces, and the hand hold is, well, handy.A very good all-rounder and a nice price. Five stars

Excellent quality, durable (so far), well built and handles are a good innovation. I don't know how common it is for spirit levels to have cm/inches down the side (maybe less common in metal ones) but I've found it useful in the past and would have been useful here. That's my only complaint.

Got it a day ahead of schedule, very pleased to find inside the package the item from the picture, some of the previous reviews got me slightly worried! Very happy with it and at the price I paid for it there’s no comparable level on the market. Very happy customer here!
