I own a couple of FE lenses for my Sony A7M2, all of which are fantastic in their own right, however this one has now taken the #1 favourite spot of them all, it's just a very pleasant lens to use and the quality of imagery you can get from this is phenomenal.Inside the box you also get a carry pouch, a plastic conical lens hood and the normal bits of paper work. The whole lens body has a robust and top quality feel, making you feel like you paid for a product that means business. There are a couple of switches and features located on the exterior, which are:∙ Auto Focus Range Switch: Full Range | Infinity - 0.5m | 0.5m - 0.28m. When you get used to knowing your distance, using this switch to specifically tell the camera will speed up the auto focus greatly as it can concentrate on one area.∙ Optical Steady Shot Switch: On | Off. For when used handheld, will help reduce shake on photos.∙ Hold Focus Button: When held in AF mode, it will cancel the auto-focus and lock it into its current focus range.∙ Focus Ring: The focus ring can be changed from AF to MF by sliding it towards you and back to AF by sliding it away; this makes it useful when you want to quickly change between the two. The manual focus distance is also marked on the lens, so when switching back to MF, it will remember which distance to focus in on (unless you somehow accidentally moved it). I personally found the focus ring to have decent grip. The great thing about having a 90mm macro lens is that it allows you to get closer to your subject without being so close to it. I also own the normal 30mm macro lens which was designed around Sony's APS-C sensor camera range, however to get really close shots will require you to get very close, sometimes resulting in having the lens shadow on your subject; using this lens will prevent it happening as often.Macro photography certainly isn't easy, so if you're just getting into it, do have patience. The slight movement will make your subject out of focus as the depth of focus is so shallow, especially at its widest F/2.8 aperture, so I'd recommend going between F/8 - F/16. The detail you can get in macro shots when focused properly is simply superb.Macro photography isn't where it stops with this lens; portrait and candid shots are also its strong areas. Whilst I do prefer Sony's 55mm F/1.8 lens for portraits, I can never get decent candid shots with it as I need to be much closer; so now having that ability has pleased me greatly. You can still get a decent shallow depth of field with the F/2.8 aperture and this lens can deliver decent bokeh too. As for sharpness, if you get the focus right, it's very good.I highly recommend this lens, top stars from me!

The choice of macro lenses to match full-frame Sony Alpha cameras is not exactly broad. Although these cameras can mount virtually all legacy macro lenses via adapters, all except Canon lenses and legacy Sony lenses for DSLRs provide autofocus and automatic aperture, with significant limitations of performance.A focal length of 90 mm is a minimum for a macro lens usable in the field on full frame. This particular model has been designed to provide a sharp image on a 42 Mpixel sensor, which is not true of many legacy lenses. At this focal length, it is also useful as a short tele for portraits or general use. This is not a small or lightweight lens, however.Because of the long focus throw,a macro lens cannot be expected to provide a fast autofocus, or a precise autofocus in low light. This lens is better than others I have tried in the past on other cameras, but still hunts back and forth in low light, even with the focus limiter engaged. In my opinion it is a fair compromise for its excellent optical quality and high but not excessive price, and considering the lack of real alternatives it is a must-have for macrophotography with Alpha cameras. The coming Tamron 90 mm macro could be a lower-cost alternative, smaller-sized, and most likely will provide a good image quality (just like the earlier Tamron 90 mm macros, which are all good). Only tests will show whether there are any significant differences in image quality and autofocus speed between the Sony and the Tamron 90 mm macros.Read full review...

I've been using this lens on my A7R II for about a year. I bought the camera together with the lens, fitted the lens and never really removed it until... well, one day I was shooting some sunsets in Tenerife and realized the sensor is covered with dirt! That's with the lens attached and never removed. So the takeway from this is that either the lens sucks up dust or we're seeing the "Leica Q Effect" (look it up).If it were not for this fact, I'd say the build quality of the lens is excellent. It is solid metal, zooming and focusing is smooth (though zooming a little less so), so in terms of material construction there's little to complain about, especially when compared with such hideous monstrosities as Canon 28-135 IS.In terms of optical quality, I'm not really impressed. At the wide angle the lens exhibits significant barrel distortion. Corner sharpness is not great either. It's an OK walkabout general-purpose lens but unlikely to provide masterpieces at the wide end. I have also failed to get any good-looking portraits with this lens, unlike when shooting with a cheap Canon 50/1.8.Also, given that this lens costs $1100, I feel that if you have a Metabones adapter, this money is better spent elsewhere. If you really must have the Sony mount, consider looking at the G Master series of lenses. I haven't used one, though, but those are supposed to be the functional equivalents of Canon's L glass. But yes, they are also twice the price.

If macro is your thing and you have Sony E mount full frame camera the this lens is a must.First things first. It ain't light, but that's a good thing as t feels super stable when using it hand held.Optical stabilisation is built in, and together with the in-body stabilisation chances are you will get that shot. The focus limiter switch is a godsend when working close hope as it stops the lens from hunting for focus.Picture quality is really something else. The attached image was taken handheld 1/200sec f8 iso 100And this is a crop of the full size image.I think that life with this lens s going to be amazing.

Incredible 90mm Full frame Sony G Lens. F2.8 Macro. I use Zeiss and Sony Lenses E Mount. Having used Zeiss on a Haselblad H Series. These Sony Lenses are definitively in the same league for there class. Used on a full frame Sensor this Prime lens is worth every penny.I have tended to use Prime lenses rather than Zoom but the Sony GM 24-70 will be my next lens as the optical quality is unrivalled .This 90 mm lens on the Sony Alpha A7Rii its magnificent for stills or motion. i have been in the business for 30 years and there only used to be two options. This is Disruptive technology.

This lens is often referred to as 'the best macro lens in the world ' in online reviews. What I can say is that it's certainly the sharpest macro lens I've used in over 35 years as a photographer. It's also a great portrait lens giving gorgeous bokeh.Handling is excellent and build quality is what you expect from a Sony 'G' lens.Price, as with most Sony lenses, isn't cheap, but don't let that put you off. This lens really is that good!!

I have the Sony A7r and have found the canon glass and metabones adapter to be to unreliable. The camera is much happier with this lens. IQ and build quality are truly superb. It's a lot of money but completes a high spec camera system.

This is definitely one of the sharpest lens I’ve bought and used. Not only a superb macro lens but a good portrait lens as well. These are the reason I bought this.
