This is a must-have lens for the A7 series of cameras. One of the limitations of these cameras is that the range of lenses available, with the primes getting good reviews and the very limited range of zooms faring less well. One of the main issues is the price, as the FE mount lenses are often considered to fare poorly when compared to DSLR lenses of a similar price. I think the cost of this lens is on the high side when compared to, let's say the equivalent f4 DSLR lens from Nikon, but given that that is true of the whole Sony FE mount range, this lens does at least perform excellently. I use it all the time for concert photography with an A7s,and as long as the camera's autofocus system can latch onto the target (which it unfortunately fails to do all too often), the images are really clear and sharp. Given that I use it in poorly-lit conditions, I usually have it wide open at f4 all the time, and the images are generally really sharp until you get close to full zoom. There is also a focus lock button on the camera lens, which is pretty useful as I don't find the back-button focus setting on the A7s works very well. The image stabilisation works nicely, and I have got hand-held shots at 1/30 of a second at around 140mm, maybe even a bit longer. If I compare it to the Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 I used on a Nikon D610, the image quality is easily as good and the lens/camera combination weighs half the amount. I would ideally prefer it to be a little faster, perhaps going up to f2.8, but only if the image quality remained the same. Even though my Sigma lens could go to f2.8, I never shot it at more than f4 because the image quality deteriorated after that point. Given that the autofocus system on the A7 series is not a strong point anyway, I suspect that the narrower depth of field afforded by a wider aperture would simply mean less keepers.I know the 24-70mm f4 has received a lot of poor reviews, to the extent that I have no intention of buying it (at least not at its current price), but I honestly cannot say I am disappointed with this 70-200. However, I would advise people to shop around as it seems to vary in price quite a bit and you could easily end up paying too much for it.

This is a fantastic lens well worth the somewhat inflated price tag (in comparison to the Canon and Nikon equivalents).Firstly the build quality. This lens feels very well put together. It’s a full metal construction which makes it feel solid in the hand. Both the focus and zoom rings are silky smooth with a rubberised, slip-free feel to them and the included Tripod Mount is reassuringly solid. All in all, nothing to complain about here. The lens is relatively small for the range it covers and not too heavy. It’s similar in size and weight to the Canon and Nikon equivalents so nothing to write home about. Put it like this, I’ve spent several days with this attached to my A7 worn around my shoulder (using a Black Rapid)without issue.Focus speed is great actually. The Sony A series aren’t renowned for their focusing speed but this lens performs surprisingly well. The focus is fast and accurate. I found tracking to be a little ropey when tracking fast moving objects so I just turned this off and opted for single shot focus instead.Lastly (and arguably most importantly) image quality. The image quality is really fantastic. The lens is sharp across the frame throughout the entire range however, 200mm is its weakest. It’s still great at 200mm but isn’t quite as sharp as throughout the rest of the range. Contrast is good without being overbearing and the bokeh is silky smooth.Overall, a great lens deserving of a spot within your collection.

This is a full frame standard zoom for the Sony cameras using the E Mount. It is well built and light in weight (when compared to its competitors from Canon and Nikon). I use it with an A7 RIII and now an A7 RIV.I have been very impressed with this lens. It focuses quickly and accurately and is light enough in weight that it does not unbalance the camera for hand held shots. Picture quality is above average and they seem to be sharp and performs as expected from a lens of this cost. Whether it extracts the full resolution from either Sony A7's I have is subject to debate (it does not), but I know I can crop in without a problem and get very sharp pictures.I have invested in F/4 series lenses rather than F/2.8 since the larger aperture lenses are too heavy for carry around use even though their better light collecting ability is not in doubt. However the sensors in todays cameras are extremely good and low noise even up >6400 ISO which means we can use these smaller aperture lenses without fear of loosing that shot in low light.I would recommend this lens to anyone with an E Mount Sony, especially the A7 and A7R series. It is portable, very well made and gives excellent results. Thoroughly recommended.

Absolutely excellent lens. The build quality is fantastic, although with my sample the tripod collar moves too easily when it is supposedly locked down. The IS is decent, not as good as a cheaper competitor lens that I have, but it is a heck of a lot quieter. Focussing is essentially silent, as is changing aperture. This lens feels like it's built like a tank and could really stand up to abuse. The size is great for an FE system like my A7s, although I feel it's a lot more comfortable to use with a battery grip installed. It's a bit pricey for what it is, to be honest, but offset against the cost of the camera (in comparison to the competition) the overall price about evens out. But the lens is super sharp, lovely bokeh. I've been using it for aerial photography, and just general photo taking, and it's performed extremely well.

I use this lens on my a7 and it is brilliant. the focus is blisteringly fast. I have the 35mm and 55mm ziess primes and this is 99% as good. the oss is very good. it is not light, but not as heavy as other makes and you can walk round all day with this.Only used it hand held as i have only had it a week and taken about 500 pickys and only had 2 a bit out of focus. it is that good I would have traded my 55mm ziess prime in if I could not have been able to afford it(had I had testedit first) as the 55 is magic. It is expensive, but I myself think it is worth it. I have spent a lot this year on camera gear and this is my best buy.

Been shooting with this lens for a few years with my A6300 and A7iii and its a great lens. Its compact, lightweight and internal zoom which is great for shooting in wet conditions such as the UK. My only two Gripes I have are aesthetical. The white isn't ideal for shooting in muddy environments and also travelling around as i screams expensive lens and i much would have preferred black. Being a landscape photographer the tripod collar would be much better if it was already designed to support Arca Swiss tripod heads instead of buying a 3rd party collar. Apart from those its a fantastic lens!!

Always a worry when you spend a large chunk of money for a lens that after reading all the reviews you still have that nagging feeling that it's not going to meet your highly critical photographic eye. The first frame I took with this lens was a crisp, sharp, detailed photo of a flowering shrub some 35 feet away, on full 200mm zoom. That G symbol sure stands for "Great" in my opinion. Blazingly quick auto focus, superb steady shot system makes this lens a pleasure to shoot with.. A beautifully constructed robust bit of kit. Sony have made a winner with this lens. Highly recommended.

Recently purchased as part of a move from a DSLR-based system, complete with giant f2.8 zooms. While I miss that extra aperture stop a little, the overall reduction of size and weight in the whole system makes it worth the sacrifice.Very good performance right from f4, with the exception of the corners being just a little soft until you stop down. That's no a problem for my style of work, though. Out of focus backgrounds look very smooth and clean.Autofocus is fast and accurate, and the stabilisation works surprisingly well.Overall, I'm very happy with it so far!

I never write reviews unless the product deserves my time and my God does this deserve it!What a cracking piece of glass this lens really is. I was dubious about only being max of 200mm but it's that sharp and fast to focus that it's better than any 300mm I've ever used or owned when cropped extra to compensate. I've done side by side tests too with the alpha 70-300G mk1 & 2, the new fe 70-300G and the random equivalent. If in doubt just order this lens and give it a go. It's the best tele zoom I've ever come across.Love it!!!

On camera most of the time since getting. Size and weight are reason I chose this rather than to f2.8, being I shoot landscapes f4 is fine. Stabilization works great for hand held shots though that's rare. Image quality so far from lens and the A7R have really helped take my photography to a new level, so much so that I now have prints rather than just digital copies. Regularly print 20" x 30" and 16" x 36", also a 20" x 59". Anyone with E mount who shoots landscapes should get this lens as it doesn't disappoint.

Yes, you lose a stop of light compared to the f/2.8 GMYes, on paper the 2.8 GM is sharperBut by god, this lens is far easier to carry around and significantly cheaper. I can tell the 2.8 is sharper when I pixel peep my images at 200% or more. But which normal person does that???If you are needing low light performance, this is not the lens for you.If you're a pixel peeping enthusiast then this is not the lens for you.If you want a great lens that doesn't make your arms hurt, this is great.

What a great bargain amongst all the overpriced Sony products now appearing, particularly under theGM label, this just puts you off buying Sony products. This 70-200 was purchased by me fromKachashop in Japan, and what a great company for firstly a bargain (Approx.£750 for this lens)Arrived in about a week with no extra charges for duties etc.Having used this lens on a Sony A7 and now the A7Rii I have take some great shots that are reallysharp and with great bokeh.

I got this as soon as it was available and have been using it ever since. Combined with my A7, it's so much more manageable than my old Nikon DSLR & 70-200mm lens, while giving me results that are just as good.At 200mm the extreme corners are a little soft at f4, but from 5.6 it's great at any focal length and from 150mm and down it's sharp across the board at f4.I've used it for a bit of sports, but mostly as a portrait lens where it excels.

After switching from a Canon 5Ds to a Sony A7iii I was contemplating adapting my existing canon lenses with an adapter. I found that it worked okay but hunted for focus quite a bit. So I made the decision to sell my canon lenses and go native. I purchased the 70-200 f4 and I can’t believe how sharp and fast it is. It’s half the weight of the canon 70-200 L lens. Works surprisingly well in low light also. I’d definitely recommend this to anyone.

Having already bought the Zeiss 24-70mm & 55mm I decided to buy this telephoto lens to add to my collection. Some may consider this a very expensive lens but the price is justified by the results it produces. It is sharper than its rivals but in a smaller and ligher package. No negative issues to report and it is one of my favorite lenses so far.I hope Sony continue to make lenses of this calibre and consider releasing a tele-converter for it.
