Before this lens came out, the closest you could get to a 50mm with a 1.8 aperture on a Sony FE lens, would be to go for the Sony 55mm F1.8 Sonnar T* FE Lens, but at a cost. The Sony SEL50F18F is available at approximately two-three times less, making it one, if not THE cheapest available FE lens on the market by Sony.- Inside the box you will find:∙ SEL50F18F Lens.∙ ALC-SH146 Lens Hood.∙ Instruction Manuals / Guarantees.- Extra information:∙ Filter diameter is 49mm.∙ If used with an APS-C sized sensor, the focal length will become 75mm to equivalent of a full-framed sensor camera.First impressions were very positive indeed, it only weighs in at 186g which is extremely lightweight, plus the quality build seems pretty decent also. When mounted onto your camera (mine was the A7ii), you can barely notice a difference in weight and it has a rather small profile as it sticks out just over 6cm (not including the lens hood). If there's one negative to mention, the lens does make some noise when auto-focusing, so that may be an issue when in quiet conditions, however I found that when out and about there is a mix of other ambient noises in the background, I simply did not notice it at all when taking photos, thus not being an issue. However if you are a videographer, unless you are planning on having this set on manual focus and keeping it focused on one point, using a different source for audio or are going to scrap the cameras internal mic audio, I couldn't recommend this lens. The autofocus mechanism get picked up on the microphone audio very easily, and even when manually focusing, although not as noticeable, it still gets picked up.Overall I have been pleased with the results when it comes to taking photos, especially due to the price. Most of the photos I have taken provided an acceptable sharpness and only in a couple of photos did I come across some chromatic aberration, but unless you really zoom in on the photo, most of the time you wouldn't even notice. For bokeh lovers, you can get some real nice shallow depth of field with decent bokeh at 1.8 aperture. If you're looking for a decent FE lens around the 50mm focal length but don't want to break the bank, then this is definitely a lens I would recommend. Otherwise, if top quality is very important and money is no issue, maybe the 55mm would be a more ideal choice.✔ Pros:✓ Affordable price.✓ Lightweight and low-profile.✓ Smooth focus ring.✓ Takes decent photos with good shallow depth of field..✖ Cons:✘ Not suitable for videographers.► NOTE: I have uploaded a video which I hope will be helpful; it consists of an unboxing and photo examples. I had also included a bunch of photos which are straight from the camera, no edits whatsoever.

I use this lens on an original Sony a7 as a pro photographer and also for my family vacations. The lens is well made for its price point and reasonably light and compact. The plastic lens hood is cheap in feel but does the job. Colour rendition is quite neutral. I find the lens to be sharp, even wide open, and I am used to using very expensive glass, so I have high standards. Certainly, on the 24Mp sensor of the a7 it is a great match and provides plenty of resolution. Wide open the bokeh is quite pleasant, if a little busy at times, but in general a step up from the 28-70 a7 kit lens, as is the sharpness. Onion rings are sometimes noticeable on the bokeh balls,so bokeh is not quite as creamy as an expensive fast tele lens would be. A lot has been written about the AF. My lens, obtained direct from Amazon EU S.a.r.l. in 2019, had the latest firmware (.03), which is said to have improved AF somewhat. The lens racks focus back and forth before it locks on, making it OK for static portraits in decent light but not great for street photography, action, kids running around, etc. I use it for static model shoots or architectural details. In low light (and I do not mean black cat in a coal cellar – even in the shade on a sunny day) it can hunt and fail to achieve AF on the a7 – I can’t speak for the a7ii, a7iii etc, but I imagine they will perform better with the lens as they have upgraded AF systems. All in, a useful and good value ‘nifty fifty’ for the e-mount that doesn’t break the bank and delivers good sharpness and bokeh. AF is the achiles heel but if used on static subjects in decent outdoor light, it is not an issue.

A very versatile lens which is great in all conditions. This will take your photography to the next level if stepping up from a kit zoom, even the 28-70 on the A7x models which is a solid lens.Be sure to boost sharpness and colour in camera to really see the effects (unless you usually do this in post where you will notice it even more). If you’re wondering what the point of a 50mm prime is when your 28-70mm covers this focal length, the F1.8 aperture and simpler optics means your photos will have more depth and allow you to shoot portraits with subject isolation. Low aperture lenses bring these cameras to life - keep in mind that most camera phones have an F1.8 equivalent lens nowadays. An F1.4would make the background even smoother and creamier but the cost goes up significantly. Not forgetting that many camera models have Sony Clear Image Zoom (Digital) which will allow you to shoot at up to 200mm+ with this lens which can be handy in emergencies (albeit with some loss in detail - but still sharper than using digital zoom on the kit lens). It’s the only lens I have brought for the Sony A7 and it has stayed on the camera ever since.

I got the a6000 kit with 16-50 and 55-210 lenses. Naturally my next purchase would be a prime. This 50mm doesn't disappoint. It's very sharp, I love how much detail it picks up. The fast 1.8 aperture makes lower light photos easier, and the OSS even more so! It can throw the background out of focus with ease. It even seems very sharp wide open, and only takes a small drop in aperture to be excellent.Very little distortion, and any other issues are easily fixed in Lightroom to give very nice looking photos.Being 50mm on a crop sensor does mean it's a bit telephoto, so not great for indoors, so I think my next lens is the 35mm 1.8.It looks smart in black, feels solid, but not heavy. The hood is a bit plain, I like the look of petal hoods. The large front glass makes it look good! The only thing I've found a bit of a negative is that manual focussing is very slow. Much slower than the other lenses I have. Hopefully that an be changed in a firmware update.Overall it's a great lens for the money! I'd recommend it as the first prime for an e mount camera.

I've been a Pro Photographer for 40 years and recently transitioned to Sony from Nikon. I usually buy a cheap 50mm as standard but hesitated with this model after seeing the initial reviews. I purchased a Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art (too bulky/heavy), CZ 55mm 1.8 (Nervous Bokeh) and Samyang 50mm 1.4 (Terrible AF Performance) but wasn't happy with any of them so returned them. This wee lens was on a deal of the day offer recently so I thought I'd take a punt and buy one and try it. It was one of the best decisions I've made as this lens is brilliant value for money for £145.00. The lens came supplied with firmware version 3.0.VERDICTExceptionally Sharp, and particularly so at centreClean Bokeh, with exceptionally smooth focus transition and smooth overall renderingLow Chromatic AberrationLight weight and compact sizeThe AF is a tad slow to acquire focus on AFS but is pretty good on AFCThe focusing although somewhat noisy, does not hunt or misfocus at all on any of my bodies.

Ignore any reviews pre firmware v3 (or v2), this lens has been transformed. Its not as fast to focus as the Zeiss 55mm but its perfectly suited to day to day shooting and the optics are punching well above its weight price wise.I have found its most responsive in AFC but still good in AFS, ergonomics are excellent (better than the 55), weight is perfect and the focus motor is not as loud as reviews suggest, not noticeable at all really once you get going (unless you have some random OCD!!)The lens has character no doubt about that, images have a great quality especially paired with Sony's fine sensors. If money were no object I would pick the Zeiss 55mm but money is absolutely a factor for meso this is a great surprise to find the lens is nowhere near as bad as I expected. So in summary its got its limitations so don't expect to be blown away but for shooting this lens day to day you can't go wrong IMO, its a little beaut!

Bought this lens when on offer for £129. I've been uming and arring over whether to get this lens due to some less than stellar reviews but now that I've got it I'm pleasantly surprised at how good the image quality is. I have to admit that my initial impression was not great because the focus noise was quite a shock to me, being so used to all my other silent lenses. Now that I've used it quite extensively, I've kind of got used to the noise and it doesn't seem so bad outside and the lenses excellent sharpness, even wide open, makes up for it in spades. It has a sturdy build, is very light, and feels good on my A7. For sharpness, bokeh quality and build I'd rate it as 5 stars, for AF speed and noise only 3.Would definitely recommend it at a sub £200 price point, it's has far better image quality than the mediocre kit zoom.

First off I was very sceptical about buying this lens after reading a good range of mixed reviews on it. But after many months doing what I could with the kit lens that came with my a7iii, I went for it and purchased the lens. After having a good play around with it this weekend, I can safely say it’s worth every penny. With the firmware update on this lens and the a7 body itself, it works great with nice sharp images. Yes, it hunts for focus still from time to time and the motor when focusing isn’t exactly the quietist it could be - but for a £170 lens, can you really complain considering the price of FE options?Overall, even though I really wanted to buy the 35mm 1.8 (£550) for this camera first,I’m more than happy with this lens and I’ve not had to sell an organ to pay for it :)

Being the owner of three Sony e mount cameras this should have been the first in the lens arsenal. Due to the flexibility of the e mount system I have been able to use various other nifties at my disposal. Gimbal use however requires some auto focus and so the basic Sony 50 was purchased. Quite impressed with the autofocus: from subject to subject happens as smoothly as if using manual follow focus. The aperture allows good night shooting. The lens is light but not flimsy so takes some weight off the gimbal but will survive the odd knock. Bokah ooh the bokah ... buttery. Sweet spot is about f2.8 but opening fully to 1.8 still works a treat and gives that arty effect on images when capturing slow mo.Worth a punt but don't expect arri lens performance at this price point.

Paired with the A7ii it's a great little lens with a very nice short focal length which has met expectations in low light scenes (why I chose this lens).Filming:In the lower the F numbers it does struggle to find focus particularly while filming, but otherwise it's average. Also the focus is a little noisy and is quite noticeable when watching back the footage, but largely goes when using a good directional microphone. Without Stabilisation built in to the lens it can suffer a littlePhotos:Again is suffers from the same auto focus issues in the lower F numbers especially in the single shot AF, but does perform a little more in the continuous AF mode.Does come into its best when using manual focus which is a joy with the smooth focus ring.

I've already owned this lens in the past, but I bought this specifically for my Sony a7 for taking better photographs in low light as it has a large f/1.8 aperture. This lens is compatible with both APS-C and full frame Sony mirrorless cameras and will have a 75mm equivalent focal length on cameras such as the a6000/a6300/a5100 etc..The lens is sharp and looks amazing when stopped down to f/2.8 during the daytime. At night, the lens lets in a lot of light and produces nice creamy bokeh. APS-C users might instead consider the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 as it's only a little more expensive and is a much better lens, but for full frame sony users this should be the first lens you buy excluding the kit lens if you went that way.

Excellent value for money. I use it on an A7 and find that it does focus fairly slowly, although setting focus to spot (small) helps with speed and accuracy: using any other focus setting can give unintended focus points. Focussing on someone's eye when they are 2 feet away at f1.8 of course requires a steady hand and steady subject. That would be the case with any lens. When this one 'misses' focus, I'm pretty sure it's my fault, not the fault of the lens. Sharpness at f2.2 and above is excellent. I have used much more expensive lenses, but this one is my favourite walk-around lens. It is super lightweight (much lighter and smaller than the kit lens).

This lens gets a poor press, mostly due to its slow autofocus. Undoubtedly, the AF is very slow and noisy, although I usually find it accurate. So for moving subjects, you may have problems. BUT if, like me, you are a landscape photographer, then it's a great lens. I use it mostly around f8, and at this aperture it is extremely sharp across the field, even right into the corners. Indeed, it reminds me of my old Nikon 85mm f1.8.The lens has effectively no distortion, and I haven't detected any significant chromatic abberation. Given that it weighs just under 200g, and is just about the cheapest FE lens you can buy, then I can highly recommend it.

Yes I must say, this is an excellent budget prime for your full frame camera. Though I'm sure it does not compare to the higher end glass it certainly delivers. For portraiture this lens gives you beautiful quality and excellent depth of field to your subject. This is an excellent lens to walk around with in my opinion, I use it more often than my zoom because of its versatility in low light. When using continuous focusing it may be heard over the video depending on how quiet the environment is. It gets a little tricky when I shoot Videos, but still, for its Price it is a very good Sony Lens!

As a professional photographer using a mixture of Canon and Sony equipment I was a bit sceptical of such a cheap lens, but I thought I had nothing to lose, and I have not being disappointed. Yes the auto focus could be quieter and quicker, but I've only been caught out a handful of times in 6 months, yes there is a bit of CA when a subject is heavily backlit but nothing that Lightroom cannot sort with a single click. I have this lens on the camera almost constantly when I'm out and about with the family, but also find it super light and easy to use when producing commercial video work.
