Only been using this two days now, but very impressed. Images seem very good, though I've only printed out 2 x A4 so far (and I'm not a pixel peeper). The lens works with the hybrid auto focus without the need to download firmware and it integrates very well with camera functions - for example, if you have 'clear view' zoom enabled, the lens will automatically zoom beyond 50mm using the clear view. There is a graphic display bar to show zooming in 'real time' - when 'clear view' is disabled in the menu, the bar shows 16 - 50. When 'clear view' is enabled, it shows the extension available. But the main thing for me (I travel a great deal) is the size of the lens.It is very compact and light and makes the nex really pocketable, at last. It is not much bigger than the 16mm prime and significantly smaller than the 18-55 which my camera came with. Really feels good on the camera, if you know what I mean. The nex body is so compact, but the lenses so far have not matched that compactness - this one really does feel as if it was made for the camera! I know it can't happen for all lenses, but it is the right approach - also adopted by Tamron - I also own the tamron 18-200, whose design takes into account the size of the body far better than sony's own 18-200 monster. Not everyone will like the motorised zoom, but to me it is very smooth and accurate. Will update if any problems manifest themselves, but can't think what they might be. Incidentally, I bought mine from 'The Camera Centre', through Amazon. I think they must be selling kit lenses detached from the body as this arrived wrapped in bubble wrap, no box or anything - very quick service and reasonable price, but at the moment it doesn't seem that the lens is available on it's own.

PROs+ Extremely light reducing strain on your neck and shoulder when carrying it for hours+ Very compact when turned off+ Smooth electric power zoom (perfect with Sony NEX-3N which has a second zoom dial at the shutter button)+ 3 zoom speeds (slow, medium, fast)+ Almost silent (even at zooming quickly)+ Fast, accurate and positive autofocus+ Surprisingly good sharpness for a such a budget lens+ Metal mount will last longer+ 16-50mm (24-75mm equivalant on 35mm full frame, Sony 1.5x crop) covers most of my needs+ 16mm wide angle great for indoor, group photos, the occasional selfies and even interesting macro shots+ absolutely fine image quality, sharpness and contrast+ Better bokeh than Samsung equivalent for NX cameras and noticeably better bokeh than Micro Four Thirds+ Optical Steady Shot (OSS) is effective especially in low light situations and results in noticeably steadier shots+ Much, much cheaper than Sony 16-70mm f4 OSS which I found was not all that great especially not for the absurd price tag of 700 GBPCONs- Does not zoom as quickly as manual (but the speed is more than enough for me)- No lens hood (but I do not see the need for it)- 40.5mm lens filters are difficult to find (I use polarising filters with integrated UV film to protect the sensor)- minimal light green-ish cast on images with grey/white background (can be easily fixed in post-processing)VERDICT: An impressive little kit zoom lens that beats the Samsung rival and shows Canon, Nikon and Pentax how to make decent and affordable zoom lenses. I am quite happy.

I bought it, as I needed a wide-angle lens, and it was cheaper than 16mm pancake. I had a 16mm pancake before with previous NEX camera, and wish I didn't sell it, as it was way better than this 1650 zoom lens. so why 4 stars then? cause at the end of the day it did a job really well. the photos I took on the trip turned out to be really sharp, with nice colors, and I don't mind the barrel distortion that much. it gave actually a feel of the lens being wider than it really was.also the movies filmed with that lens looked really nice - the shake reduction worked really well, and I liked the output even more than with my kit lens 1855.the lens replaced 1855 kit lens for me,and I don't think I'll be using the kit lens again. with 19 and 30mm Sigmas this little lens is a perfect combination for my Nex. it has some flaws, but for the price - it's really good.two more things:- Aperture for Mac doesn't have lens correction so the barrel distortion will be very visible. it's up to you if you like that effect - just keep it in mind- there's visible vigneting on the corners of the photos taken at the wide end - again, I don't mind it too much, as it worked well with the type of photos I took, but if you're using Aperture and don't like that effect - you'll have to take photos in JPEG with lens correction enabled in camera body.

I've used this lens for a year on the a6300. I use several cameras for the work I do which is a mix of photography and video. The focal length range is a good one to work with, being the 35mm equivalent of 24-70mm. It's optically stabilised and you can zoom electronically with a.toggle on the side or a manual twist of the lens barrel.I say manual twist of the lens but it's actually electronic I believe, but has a manual feel to it and a quick response.I personally find the lens of acceptable quality for photos. I expected better, but then I shoot some nice glass and so for the money it's not bad. However, as a video lens it's much better. Super compact and the OSS actually works quite well.If you're wanting very high quality portrait images, you'd be better going for the 50mm f/1.8 which will give you the same 75mm as the zoomed in lens here, but with far sharper images and almost 3 more stops of light and much better bokeh. The 50mm 1.8 Sony can be had for about £180.However. For just over £200 for an optically stabilised, super compact lens, if you're not wanting super tack sharp images, it's not bad. It is after all a budget zoom lens. A full frame 24-70mm sony G lens would be much more expensive and much less pocketable.

I got this lens with my Sony NEX 6 as a kit lens. As such, I did not pay over £240 for it. I knew that this lens has been designed for smallest size possible, and as such I did expect the quality to be compromised in favor of size. Despite that, I wan't initially too happy with it. Coming from a DSLR with a decent lens I though this one is somehow too soft. As such, I decided to buy a new lens, sony's SEL1855 thinking that it will provide better quality. By mistake the shop sent me this SEL1650 lens again, so I decided to compare against my old one. And here comes a surprise. The new one, although being the same model as my old one, was significantly sharper. I decided to keep it and now I am using it for the last 2 years. On balance of things, considering its size and quality, I think this is a very good lens. But make sure you don't give up on it too quickly.Summarizing, if you need a small e-mount lens in 16-50 range capable of producing a really good results, this is probably it. Make sure that you get a sharp copy, as they do differ in quality.

I have the Sony NEX5R, A5000 and A6000 and most of the Sony E lenses. Like Adrian, I am now googling for my third SEL1650 lens as the other two are in for repair with typical estimates of £175. Sony always come back with lens was dropped etc... This is true in one case, that was my fault but the one on the A5000 I only got last year and one day it stopped working with the same, "Camera cannot see lens" type error. This one has definitely not been dropped. It just failed but I have a Sony quote for £175 to fix it.That said, Sony are making incredible cameras at the moment, the A6000 is such a no brainer with the A7 processor in it. Its so quick. Also if you the portraint lens,is exceptional for what it can do for just a couple of hundred quid!So if you want good affordable photography then keep the faith with Sony. Sony do need to rethink their lens policy though.

This lens has transformed my Sony NEX6 into a really portable and flexible camera. The lens is surprising small when powered off meaning that one can carry the NEX6 in a reasonably sized jacket or coat pocket when out walking. This zoom adds that useful bit of flexibility to get in a bit closer whilst also providing a decent wide angle capability. There will inevitably be a compromise between portability and image quality in a lens of this type and it has to be said that this lens is not pin sharp. However, it provides good very quality images that are sharp enough, a decent bokeh and pleasing colour rendition. I am really delighted with the portability and the results I have achieved with it.Highly recommended for enabling you to take your NEX out more often with you instead of relying on your smartphone :)

I bought the NEX5R with 18-55mm lens last christmas and while I have been very satisfied with the pictures the size and weight of the lens does not match the compactness of the body. I bought this lens hoping to make it pocketable. While it does make the camera a lot smaller (the length is about half of the original lens but slightly wider) and lighter it still isn't pocketable. So you still need to carry it around on your neck. I also found the power zoom to be a bit laggy even when manually zooming. If It had an inbuilt automatic lens shutter so you didn't have to mess around with the lens cap all the time then it would be perfect. So a great quality lens but I'm not sure it's worth the upgrade from the original since it still isn't pocketable.

I had SEL 18-55 as a kit lens before, and obviously this one is much shorter and finally may fit in a bigger pocket.I do not see much difference between these two lenses when making family shots. Certainly, I do not make side-by-side comparisons. When I am in desperate need of high quality and don't mind carrying some weight I take my big SLR with a nice fixed focus lens. Though I keep the 18-55 for video shoots, as people say there is a motor sound in the videos with 16-50. I did't try yet to shoot videos, but I had this kind of problem with one other camera. The only thing that is kind of odd, is that the lens does not retract immediately after you switch the camera off.So you have to wait several secods before putting it away.

The NEX series of cameras have always been nice and compact bodywise but the standard 18-55mm lens was so big it made a nonsense out of that compactness. Now Sony have come up with a retractable power zoom that goes a bit wider (24mm equivalent on 35mm) but a bit shorter at the telephoto (75mm equivalent on 35mm). It's compact and what the NEX has been waiting for. If you've got one of the older NEX cameras you'll need to get the latest firmware update (V1:02 in the case of the NEX 7) or you'll see the distortion of a fisheye lens in your viewfinder - this all disappears when you get the update. It's nice and sharp with a 40.5mm filter thread. It could do with a bayonet fitting on the barrel for a petal lens hood though.

I bought this lens separately from my NEX 6 body as they had none with lenses. I got one with the Sigma 30mm 2.8. All in all it is a decent lens for the money (~£190 delivered) and adds that flexibility for certain circumstance when a prime is not ideal. If you can shoot near f8 it's reasonably sharp but zoom is not silent and can be heard if there is not much other noise. There are a lot of these Lenses about that are separated from the kit and thus come with no manufacturer box or documentation, the retailers let you know but it's not front and centre. Though it registered fine on the Sony site if that means anything.

24.2.2013

This is a nice compact lens. I use with my NEX 5R and it makes the whole camera very pocketable (much smaller than the standard 18-55 kit lens) whilst still giving good images, sharp right to the edge. Well worth the money for me as it makes the camera into an almost true compact point and shoot camera so it is easily carried around and I use it much more, but with DSLR features, quality and versatility.I did consider the NEX 6 which comes with this lens, but wanted a touchscreen and did not want a viewfinder. So the 5R with this lens is ideal.

24.4.2013

With its light weight and compact size, this is the lens that should have been included as the kit lens in the NEX 3 and 5 ranges, in preference to the 18-55 lens. The extra width of the wide angle (22mm, as against 26mm) does make a worthwhile difference, and the lens seems sharper than the 18-55, though the difference is not immense. The power zoom, however, controlled by a switch on the lens body, seems somewhat gimmicky to me.If Sony dropped the power zoom, and brought the price down to £100, this lens would be worth five stars.

17.9.2013

I use a variety of lenses with the NEX 7 including the weighty 18 - 200 zoom. Accordingly, I have a large camera bag to accommodate the kit. I generally have no problem with this, but there are times when I want to make the most of the compact qualities of the camera and this is where the 16 - 50 lens scores. I can now carry a simple belt pouch on those occasions when I don't want all the kit and the range of this zoom lens suits most situations. I find no difference in quality between this lens and the 18 - 50 kit lens,

17.3.2013

I also saved £100 on this buying a new split from kit example. So for just over £200.00 the lens is very good value. Latest firmware updates for NEX-7 and 5n handle wide angle distortion in preview and jpegs. The latest version of Lightroom corrects distortion in RAW files. I'm pleased to say that this lens delivers sharp images, is compact and a nice match to the body size of NEX cameras, at last a zoom lens that makes sense of the NEX form factor. An ideal walk around lens.
