I bought this prime lens for my Sony a6000 after feeling a bit limited with the 16-50mm f3.5-5.6 kit lens that came with it. I have to say that I am really glad I bought this lens, although it was also on sale at the time which sweetened the deal and I had kept an eye on it for a while. The difference between f3.5 on the kit lens and the f1.8 on this lens really is impressive, I have attached some photos of thistles that were shot on this lens at that f-number which are (in my opinion) really nice. There is also a long exposure shot attached as well that is shot at a much greater f11 for 13 seconds. The thing I like most about this prime lens is that it feels like a great upgrade to the kit lens as it forces you to develop new skills and try new techniques. For example, that long exposure shot was the first I had ever tried something like that before, I sort of knew what to do in theory but it was not until I found something I could rest my camera on (I did not have a tripod at this point), stick a filter on the front of the lens (which I had never used before) and punched in some ballpark settings for a long exposure shot and waited to see if it would work. I was so surprised at how well the photos came out (in my eyes).I think the great thing about this lens is it is sharp, it has the optical steady shot (OSS) stabilisation built into the lens, which the a6000 lacks in the body. Essentially meaning the lens will correct for hand shudder when you are not using a tripod. For a beginner like myself, or someone with a camera that lacks in-body image stabilisation (IBIS) it is a great bonus to have. I do not tend to shoot much video but from what I have read it becomes more important if you are walking around videoing or vlogging with it so it is worth bearing in mind if that is how you plan to use it. I was torn between this and the Sigma 30mm f1.4, which would be the main rival to this lens from what I can tell. I was undecided on which of the two I would buy until this lens came down in price on sale, and if I am honest, from what I have read you probably won't go wrong with either as they both get rave reviews. As this is a Sony lens I would imagine the autofocus is slightly better than the Sigma but I can't honestly say that as I do not have the Sigma lens to compare, the autofocus is good but it can struggle in certain situations, although I am not skilled enough to know if that is due to error on my part in those situations! In conclusion, I am really happy with this lens, I feel like the main reason I got this prime lens was to try and develop new skills which is exactly what I have been able to do. It is light, compact, has OSS and comes with it's own lens hood and rear cap - which for some reason the kit lens lacks - which are all nice attributes for this as a whole package. If you are in doubt about what to get, read reviews and watch youtube clips about them, I found that really helpful. It feels like a bit of a risk every time you spend money on a lens and I felt the same when buying this, but I am really glad I did.Hope this helps!

I just received my 35mm f1.8 lens a couple of days ago. I bought it due to the equivalent (full frame) focal length of 52.5mm - 50mm being one of the staple lenses of many great photographers. I also felt that for the type of photography I was interested in, I was going to need a fast prime. The 16-50mm power zoom lens that came equipped with my NEX6 was ok, but just not fast enough in low light, and I felt like I was relying on the camera to find a shot for me, rather than position myself for decent composition. Hopefully this lens will encourage me to be more creative!Compared to the SEL1650, the SEL35F18 straight away feels only slightly heavier, but a gentle jiggle gives the impression that the 35mm construction is more solid. It's also about a 3rd taller than the 16-50; it's not so much that I need to buy another bag, thankfully. The focus ring is very smooth, solid, and nice and cool thanks to the aluminum outer casing. Manual focus is what I will use 98% of the time, so I'll leave it to others to comment on autofocus performance. The manual focus though is exactly what I expected, and I had high expectations. The image quality from what I've seen so far under indoor low light conditions are outstanding. Really nice subject isolation and bokeh. Lens distortion seems minimal- according to the lens distortion correction profile, only slightly needing to pull out the corners a little. Vignetting is quite mild too. With both of these my only other experience is with the 16-50mm PZ, but I will say both corrections are far less extreme with the 35mm.Initially I struggled to choose between the 50mm (75mm equiv) and 35mm (52.5mm equiv), as the former had many excellent reviews and ratings and was also much, much cheaper than the latter. However, despite the added cost, I'm very happy to be the owner of such a lovely lens - despite other lenses that I might buy (SEL16F28 with wide angle looks good...) the 35mm will likely be fitted most of the time as it's simply the best all-round prime for everyday use.Anyone hesitating, or anyone like me who wanted the 35mm as their main lens but felt like the 50mm is a better 'deal', go with your instincts and get the 35mm. It's just more versatile in my opinion, and it's so fast, smooth and sexy. I just can't imagine anyone that has it having second thoughts.

First off, I returned the one I ordered from a marketplace seller (via amazon) as it wasn't as described, no retail box or lens hood etc. However, issue was resolved quickly and refund sorted....onto the lens itself.I now have the lens from elsewhere and this is a major step up from my 16-50 kit lens. If like me you are still fairly new to the SLR / CSC world then like me you may be wondering just how much can a lens change things? A lot it turns out. What I've realised with having a good prime lens, is the difference in the sharpness, contrast and colour results I get. I went to New York recently, but to get the width I needed I didn't use the new prime, but the 16-50 powerzoom kit lens.Of course, I'd gotten used to my sharp results with this, and was a little disappointed with my soft shots which needed a lot of lightroom work. This now means I want to invest in a wide angle prime, but I'm glad I'm learning the lesson, my wallet isn't.Also, having a 1.8 aperture makes things a lot more fun. It allows faster shooting and really cool blurry backgrounds on your photos, aka Bokeh (a word I'm still not sure how to pronounce). If you have the money I've been told, and read, that the Carl Zeiss lens are the best but I can't compare as my wallet isn't that deep yet. However, my results with this lens have been fantastic and I highly recommend as a first lens for the NEX camera away from the kit. It makes me wonder if in the past I've upgraded my camera when really I just needed a better lens!

This is a superb prime lens which now sits on my Sony A6000 most of the time. I actually went on a bit of a journey before arriving here, firstly with a Sigma 30mm f2.8 DN Art and then with the F1.4 30mm DC DN lens. I wanted a "standard" focal length lens as the basic go-to kit and they are both pretty good lenses but with a max aperture of F2.8 and without OSS the Sigma is a bit limited in use for non-flash indoor photography. The F1.4 version is of course a very fast lens but it exhibited some quite problematic/strange auto-focus issues with my A6000 and had to be returned. The Sony F1.8 lens is however such a perfect combination with the A6000. The auto-focus works superbly well, very reliably and very fast. Coupled with the OSS this lens is brilliant for low light conditions. The OSS must be worth at least a couple of F stops, so being a slightly less wide aperture than the Sigma F1.4 is absolutely not an issue in any way. The other thing is, this lens looks and feels really high quality and sits just right with the Sony APS-C size of camera. It's only a bit bulkier than the kit lens, perfectly balanced and a delight to use. As many have said the image quality is just fantastic. Very sharp across the frame and well up to close pixel peeping scrutiny or cropping.

Once again, Sony has come up with an affordable solution if you require sharp pictures, vivid colour, and superb portrait shots. You cannot go far wrong with this lens for street photography. The compact footprint is ideal when shooting out and about, in fact, this lens makes my A6000 system almost pocket size. You will soon get used to working with a fixed prime, if you need wider angle, move out, or move closer (like we used to years ago!). Its very sharp down to F4, and close-ups, skin tones and colour rendering is optimal. Also has optical stabilisation, so if you are in low light, you will not even need a tripod at low speeds. Focus is super rapid, but I always tweak manually, or use focus peaking, but most will be happy with the auto focus system. Some say the Sigma is sharper still, but for me, the clincher was the optical stabilisation built in, which, when you do really need it, works a treat!! Highly recommended.

Having bought the a nex 6 some 12 months back I have been a very happy photo enthusiast. It was my first step into the world of interchangeable lenses and bigger sensors that take great photos. The stock lense is a good start and basically is a cover all bases with both wise angle and zoom, but practically speaking it compromises too much of what the nex can offer.I was throwing coins as to whether I took one of the more pancake lenses f2.8 or go the whole distance for the 1.8 options. For the added cost and the massively impressive photos I am not disappointed in my decision. The 50mm equivalent focal length is great for the portrait style of photography I am normally doing (while I can't speakfrom experience I think the 35mm equivalent f1.8 would be too wide for the composition I am now used to taking), and the fast 1.8 aperture means you get the shots you want with out compromising on poor lighting conditions.

I really appreciate the compact design and solid build of this lens. Its combo with an a5000 can easily fit into a jacket pocket. The image quality is great overall. SEL35f18 features remarkable sharpness and clarity. The only negative about it are noticeable axial chromatic aberrations which are visible at maximum aperture as green edges around high-contrast objects behind the focus point and magenta edges in front of it. Most of the time you won't notice this on portraits, but you should keep this in mind when shooting wide open under bright light.P.S. to sony.co.uk team: please note that the MTF charts on this page http://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/camera-lenses/sel35f18 belong to the SELP1650 power zoom, not the 35mm prime.

So i use this on an a6000. Its great for taking pictures of people and stuff a little further away. The lens itself is amazing, pictures look fantastic and the night shots came out really really nice to where someone asked me if I'd used a tripod. But its all hand held and taken in a rush, but they look incredible. I took it to Vietnam + Cambodia with me. What i found though was that the lens wasnt wide enough due to the cropped camera sensor. You have to be really far away to get like landscape and the temple shots in. But combine this lens with the sigma 19mm and you are good to shoot in any scene.Sigma 19mm for scenery, this lens for people + blurred backgrounds.

This lens is the perfect “nifty fifty” on the Sony a5xxx, a6xxx series of APS-C cameras. The lens has a very good build quality, and is very lightweight. The wide aperture of f/1.8 makes the lens ideal for indoors use, although if the lighting is too dim the camera will struggle to focus. The image quality is simply stunning, with a very good colour balance, and can provide a decent blurred background. The stabilisation on the lens works well, enabling hand held low light photography. The Sigma 30mm f1.4 is usually sold at a lower cost than the Sony, but doesn’t have the stabilisation.

If your looking for your first sony e-mount lens this is perfect. the quality will make the most out of your camera. it is very good in low light, might even be the best ive seen, no other camera has come close to this low light performance. it is super quick to focus and shoot. only thing to note is that when the stabilisation is turned on a slight noise is made by the lens, this will be a problem if you plan on filming in a quiet location. i have included some pictures, some showing the lens for scenery and some in low light.

Bought this for my a6000 after debating between this and the sigma 30mm F2.8. I chose this because the kit lens was far too slow in low light and the 1.8 would give me better control. Im pretty happy with my purchase, not over the moon - justify the price? £50 less would be priced about right. Autofocus is outrageously quick. Good colours. I now shoot everything in 3 shot brackets (+-2EV) this just gives me better dynamic range as i think it shoots too quick to allow enough detail across the colour spectrum.

I was considering upgrading my NEX-7 to a full sized Canon SDLR but thought I would try a prime lens for the Sony first. As a result I am now keeping the NEX-7. This little lens is fantastic, pin sharp, clear, and totally amazing in low light. The 35mm sees things in roughly the same way the human eye sees the World so it feels very natural when you look through the viewfinder. Couple this with the fact that it is extremely light and quite small and you have, for me, the ideal walk about / portrait lens.

I couldn't be happier with this. Having tried purchasing elsewhere and having a terrible experience, I gave amazon a go and all went to plan. The lens arrived quickly, well packed, and worked out the box. I'm not expert, but this gives me the best photos I've ever taken when on my Nex-5N. It makes the camera nice and portable, works in very low light, and 35mm seems to me the best lenght for a walk-around lens. All in all, I couldn't be happier.

Wanted a good quality (?) “prime” lens to replace the 16-50 zoom “kit” lens that came with the Sony A6000 camera. Only used it a few times so far, but it’s liable to spend most time on the camera!...the kit lens isn’t too bad, but this one is better...use so far had been indoors, with no need for flash...obviously from its better f stop value...and it’s physically only a little larger, which helps my quest to “downsize” from a major DSLR beast..

This lens is absolutely gorgeous. I got it as an upgrade to the 1650 kit lens for my Sony A6000. I set the kit lens to 35mm with maximum aperture and this lens to F5.6 (maximum on the kit lens at that focal length), and the same picture looked way sharper and better colour representation! This will definitely be my walking around lens and wont even take the 1650 on holidays. I do also have a Rokinon wide angle lens though.
