This is honestly a fantastic lens for the price. ~£1100 for a 70-300mm is really not bad at all (in fact I'd even say it's cheap) and it's not too hard to make F4.5-5.6 work, even if you're going for Moon photography. Especially when compared to the other lenses in the lineup:FE 70-200mm F4 G:Essentially the trade off is a wider aperture (only a stop more at 70mm) for less focal length on that lens. If you're using the lens for wildlife photography, I'd likely recommend the 70-300mm over the 70-200mm one as you can always "add exposure" in post, but you cannot add more focal length and you may find you cannot zoom in enough on your subject with the 200mm.FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM:Again,less focal length in exchange for a much wider aperture, so you're going to be getting sharper and lighter shots with better contrast in exchange for focal length. Furthermore, the £1600 price hike for that lens is simply not worth it in my opinion.FE 100-400 F4.5-5.6 GM OSS:If money were no issue to me, I likely would have gone for the 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 GM OSS because that is close to being the pinnacle of Sony telephoto lenses right now, but you are looking at around £1400 more than the 70-300mm for an extra 70mm of focal length (as that lens starts at 100mm not 70) with the same aperture.Other:I'm not even going to talk about the lenses that go over 400mm in focal length simply because they go into "I just won the lottery and want to spend it all today" territory (looking at you 600mm F4 GM at £12000 and 400mm F2.8 GM at £10500).So, I'd say this lens is a must buy for anyone using an E-Mount Mirrorless, looking to take photos of animals or the moon or things that require such a long focal length.Why 4 stars then?The AF on this lens is really quite finicky. It very much likes to focus on what's direct in front, rather than the main subject. Had many missed shots due to the fact it was focussing on leaves or foliage, rather than activating the "Animal AF" and focussing on the animal I was looking at.I did manage to "fix" the issue by going into my camera settings and using "centre focus" rather than wide or full-frame, but that only works if your subject is dead-centre; if you want shots with subjects on the side of the frame... well, good luck in a "crowded" environment.A lot of people care about weight too; I had my A7iii with this lens attached around my neck all day at the local zoo and barely felt a strain. Because of the in-built OSS, barely any of my shots came out blurry (unless of course due to the weird AF) and they were all taken hand-held.Don't get me wrong, the lens packs some weight, but nothing that is unusable or too clumsy.tl;dr: Weird finicky AF, a tad heavy, excellent shots, fantastic price, MUST BUY for wildlife photographers.

Well made lens constrained by its slow speed. Reasonably sharp and compares well to the other manufacturers.The fly by wire focus is ok but not as good as manual direct focus. However the auto focus is excellent if you're likely to use that (on my A7R2).I have confidence in this lens.

Good companion for a6500 at sport photography and videos. Accurate focus even in fast events. Indoor use not tested yet, but dark days outdoors are ok, iso stays in acceptable levels.
