Only buy this lens if you already have the 18-55mm lens that is usually supplied as part of a kit with NEX cameras and if you really can't stretch to paying for the 18-200 LE lens, as the SEL55210 and the SEL18200LE are virtually identical in size and regardless what the specifications say about weight, in your hand you will barely notice the extra weight of the SEL18200LE. Note that I am referring to the LE version of the lens, which is all black, not the original SEL18200 (non-LE), which is substantially larger and heavier.Apart from this, the SEL55210 is a reasonably compact lens for the focal length and for the NEX cameras. It displays pin-cushion distortion at 210mm. Distortion not yet checked at 55mm,but barrel distortion would be expected. It should be easily possible to correct this in software. I have not yet found on-line the correct plug-in distortion correction file for this lens, but using the Photoshop E-18-55 plug-in does a reasonably good job of correcting the geometric distortion. In fact, using the "Custom" option in Photoshop - Filters - Lens Correction, it should not be difficult to correct this manually.Vignetting at 210mm is insignificant and so is chromatic aberration (colour fringeing).Image quality (resolution, sharpness) is excellent. I only recommend the 18200LE in preference to this lens as it enables you to carry only one lens on most occasions, instead of two (the 18-55 and the 55-210), and avoids the need to swap lenses, which always entails the possible risk of dust entering the camera body and settling on the sensor. This lens does of course come with a much better lens shade than is possible for the 18-200, with its massive zoom range. It also has the advantage of taking the same 49mm filters as the kit 18-55mm lens (as opposed to the much bigger and more expensive 62mm filters that are required by the 18200LE). In many shooting situations, better lens shade = more contrasty image plus reduction or elimination of flare (unwanted bright marks within the image caused by reflections of bright sources of light which might even be outside the image area). This is a good lens to buy if this is the zoom range that you really want to have, and for the other reasons indicated above.

► NOTE: I have been using this lens with the Sony A6000.This lens is available in either Silver or Black..·:*¨*:·.·:*¨*:·.·:*¨*:·.·:*¨*:·.·:*¨*:·.·:*¨*:·.·:*¨*:·.·:*¨*:·.·:*¨*:·.Although I personally prefer using Sony's 18-105mm f/4 E-Mount Lens due to having a decent wide-tight range and consistent F4 aperture, however it doesn't always cover the telephoto range needed, which is where the 'SEL55210' comes in real handy.Packaging info: Fairly tall box which also comes with an instruction manual, guarantee document & a lens hood. This lens starts off with a tight shot of 55mm (82.5mm (35mm equivalent)) which can be a a bit of hindrance depending on your circumstances,so do take an extra lens which covers a lower focal range if you feel you may need it. It can extend up to 210mm (315mm (35mm equiv.)) which is a very good focal range to have; especially for sporting events such as football or boating etc...The zoom is all mechanical rather than electronic (otherwise known as power zoom lenses), so is only adjustable by manually twisting the lens (the large rigid area located in the middle of the lens); a positive note about this sort of zoom is that you can zoom in and out very quickly. When fully zoomed in, it does poke out quite a bit, so do be careful when panning around. As for photo quality, overall I'm pretty darn satisfied. There were a few photos that came out poorly either because of the autofocus from my camera not locking onto the correct subject, or I was relying too heavily on the auto mode, but the majority came out very well.If you know what you're doing with the settings, you can get some top results.Would recommend.

I dithered for ages before eventually buying this lens for a holiday to Costa Rica. I used it on a Sony A6500.In the end it was the right choice because I got some good wildlife shots but it was hard work. The good points:Small and light, solid construction, no zoom creep, potentially good Image quality (but see caveat below), supplied hood, convenient filter size (49mm), excellent zoom range especially on a crop-frame body, fast to focus on the a6500, even on full zoom. Very good price. The less good points:Slow maximum aperture at the 210mm end (f6.3) and image quality distinctly soft at the maximum aperture (many other reviewers have mentioned this). What this all means is that to get the bestout of this lens you need to discipline yourself to use a max aperture of f8 - not that easy in the low light of a jungle - which means a high ISO is needed as well. Above f7.1 I found Image quality tightens up considerably. In the jungle I also had the additional factor of leaves and branches fooling the autofocus, but that could affect any lens and was largely a matter of setting up the AF correctly. So, choose the camera to partner this lens with care - not necessarily one at a comparable price point.Other reviewers have given this lens a low points score mainly because of the shortcomings I have mentioned. On balance I think the design is basically good for a travel lens, even the slow max aperture, as this largely determines its useful small size. What would get it 5 stars from me is a mark 2 version with good image quality when wide open.

So we got this camera to be paired with the (rather mediocre) Sony NEX-VG900E having realized that we want autofocus that actually works, as well as a zoom button that actually works. Well, we got half of that: autofocus does in fact work, and it's actually smooth (amazing!) which is a lifesaver for dynamic shooting. Unfortunately, the zoom isn't internal - if you want that, be prepared to shell out for the Sony SELP18200 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS.Image quality - I don't think it's relevant to comment here, since you're only after 1080p and no, this isn't a fast lens if you're shooting in a badly lit environment, prepare for gain! Also, the SEL-P isn't any faster, but its range is better, whereas this range starts at 50mm which means you have to be >5 metres if you're recording someone in front of a whiteboard. Just saying, because the VG900, for example, won't pick up the speaker from this distance unless they're using a proper Mic. It will pick up audience questions, however, so it's not a total loss. But if you stick a radiomic instead, you get your voice done properly, but loose the audience questions. No middle ground here.Zoom creep - yes, it's there, not as much as some cheaper lenses, but it exists. Also, the lens extends outwards to what feels like 2x length, more if you've got the hood attached. Just because it's long doesn't mean it doesn't look entirely amateurish, because that's what it is.Autofocus is very good though. Nice and quiet. But make sure you've good a tripod head suitable for turning the camera properly.

I too purchased a Sony NEX 5R with the 18-55 kit lens and also felt- after having a bridge camera - that I needed to purchase a bigger zoom and so got the 55 -210 and there's nothing wrong with it to be honest. The only negative thing I can find to say is if your into macro photography you might not like this....I set my 5R up to take macro photos of flowers because that is what I like to do as well as general photography only to find that it would not focus near to the lens, on looking into this I discovered the awful truth - the minimum focus distance with the 55-210 is about a meter! With my bridge camera I could take excellent pictures to within 1cm of the lens...but not with these Sony lenses.I also have the little 16-50mm power-zoom which I can really recommend and its minimum focus distance on macro is about a foot in the old money - very good lens though.I don't know about the 18-55 I haven't checked that and I sold mine on here anyway because I wanted something more compact that would slip into a jacket pocket.Anyway - you may find it hard to believe but I have re-purchased my old bridge camera - a Fuji HS10 because of the excellent photos it took and the macro and the 720mm zoom! I got it at a bargain price and I know IT takes good pictures because I have actually won photo competitions with it!I shall continue to use the NEX 5R as it is an excellent camera (its my grandaddy camera) but it does not, in my opinion, have the flexibility of some bridge cameras.

I migrated to Sony's brilliant APSC range around 6 months ago from my beloved Nikon D750.Coming from full frame I wanted a camera system that was compact and a lot easier to cart around! You will notice a hole in the Sony APSC line up of lenses. The 70-300 zoom lenses.Canon and Nikon shooters have the Sigma and Tamron offerings as well as the own brand solutions. This lens isn't cheap when compared to some of those offerings but when compared to the other telephoto options on this system it's the most wallet friendly option.Despite mainly positive reviews I would say if your coming from another system you need to manage expectations. I get better results using the SEL18105 and then cropping than I can from this lens.It simply is not a sharp lens.A total beginner may be satisfied and if you don't expect a lot from it then it's an effective 300mm telephoto but for me, despite my best efforts this lens stays in the kit bag now because it lets the camera down.I recently borrowed the 70-200 f4 and it blows this lens into another dimension. If you just want some budget range for the system, it's the cheapest option. But if you want quality I would pass on this lens and keep saving

I just bought the Sony NEX 5N camera kit consisting go the 18-55 and 55-200mm lenses. I am normally somewhat sceptical about the performance of so called "kit" lenses supplied with a camera body, however in this case I have so far been pleasantly surprised. The lens seems to be reasonably solidly buiilt with an aluminium outer tube. The inner extending lens tube is made of plastic, and it does wobble slightly but I have not noticed any effect on picture quality so far. The lens is not perfect and there is noticeable pincushion as well as Barrel distortion. I have been an avid supporter of the programme "DXO Optics" which in addition to correcting over and under exposure has lens specific correction tables for barrel and pincushion distortion.I was excited to discover that the NEX-5N had built in compensation for vignetting as well as these lens distortions.I tested this out by taking shots both "raw" and "jpeg" and could easily see that the camera was correcting the lenses aberrations. I am very pleased by this and have started just taking "jpegs" for the time being as the onboard processing seems to be doing an excellent job.All in all I am very pleased with my purchase.

I've been using this lens for a few weeks now and so far so good! I'm no professional photographer and only take photos as a hobby, however, there's very little I can fault with this lens from my experience. The photos attached are all taken with this lens on a Sony A5000 camera, not the best camera in the world but I love the photos I managed to take with it.Good things:Solid build quality, very well made.Takes great photos at far zooms.Focuses fast (most of the time).Has good stabilisation even at maximum zoom.Less good things:On occasion I've been completely unable to focus on certain things no matter how much I try,I'm sure this could be fixed with manual focus but autofocus just couldn't get it,When the lens hood is on it can be fiddly to get the lens cap back on securely without removing the lens hood,Very niche issue here but whilst I was at the Eden project, the rainforest biome is extremely humid and the lens completely steamed up, could wipe it off but worth noting if you're planning to use in extremely humid environmentsApart from a few minor flaws, everything else is absolutely perfect and amazing value for money! Would definitely recommend.

I purchased a Sony a6500 a few years ago and have been examining lenses ever since. One of the main issues with the Sony camera range is the cost of the lenses- which leads me to this review! This lens is the standard kit lens that goes with older camera models of this type and with the price, you can’t go far wrong. It’s not the best lens in the world- the picture me I’ve taken (mainly wildlife) have all been pretty good and with the right conditions you can get some lovely pictures- also providing you have image editing software I’m also sure you could improve these as well.If you are looking for a cheap, budget zoom lens for the alpha cameras I would recommend this- you’ll be hard pushed to get anything much cheaper- a zoom lens designed specifically for the alpha range released by Sony recently was upwards of £3000! I would love to own it but I simply can’t justify that cost currently. The robin in the picture is from this camera and lens- I was quite pleased with it.

I bought this to use with my a6000 camera. I think that it is a great value lens to add a lot of range when bought as an addition to the 16-50 kit lens and the size is also very convenient compared to alternatives with similar range.I am sure that a professional photographer could tell the difference between this and some of the much bigger and much more expensive alternatives, but for me, as someone with a lot still to learn, this is an excellent product for an accessable price.I have found the picture quality to be very good, even when hand-held and at the end of the zoom range. If i had one reason to wish for improvements it would be in the speed of the auto-focus in certain situations.Mostly it works very fast but sometimes it seems to struggle to find the right focus point for 2-3 seconds.Overall, this is an excellent lens for the purpose and should especially suit people who have a budget to consider ratehr than the highest level enthusiast/professional.

This lens is a must have addition to the NEX lens line up and unlike the 18-200 variants it does not cost too much. Build quality and general feel of the lens is excellent and the compact diameter means that the supplied kit flash does not cast a shadow. The only problem I have is getting the plastic hood which is supplied with it to fit properly / easily because it's a very tight fit. I have instead reverted to a generic rubber hood instead. This lens is probably the most comfortable to handle on the camera. If you want low light performance however then this is not the quickest, but you are unlikely to want it for those reasons.Recommended purchase if you are serious about the NEXplatform.

The Sony Nex5n with an 18-55mm lens gives great results having moved up from a Canon IXY 800IS. While the 18-55mm lens has proved versatile, I was looking for a high zoom lens to provide more photo opportunities. The High Zoom 55-210mm lens has not disappointed. Results have been pleasing: good definition, sharp images. When using the lens at maximum zoom and I've not had a tripod handy, I've used the anti-motion blur setting which has worked well with the lens. At maximum zoom and with the hood attached the total length of the lens is 250mm (9.75in) so the camera a lens needs good support when used. Other than this minor drawback, I've been pleased with the lens.

Lovely lens+ Good zoom for a low price.+ 3.5f on 55mm (the kit lens on a6000 at 50mm is at 5.6f).+ It's a bit long but it's not very heavy and not fat looking.+ looks better than the kit lens with the hood on.- Image quality little bit better than the kit lens (50mm kit lens vs this one at 55mm)- 6.3f at 210mm- 55mm min rangeOverall: Very good value zoom lens. Tho not even close to other zoom lens in quality, this lens is also far away lower than the price range of the other zooms (like the 18-200mm)Also you get what you pay for. But for 200£ if you are just starting out and wanna have a zoom lens without spending a week (or 2 for some) worth of work.

There aren't many zoom lenses for the E-Mount Sony system out-there. So a natural choice would be the 55-210 lens. I bought this to cover my zoom needs. paired with a Nex6 it has PDAF system focusing which may improve focusing speed sometimes. In general the lens is good, not perfect quality as I hoped but when there is light it will perform accordinagly. In low light situations, a faster lens (like 50mm F1.8 or 35mm F1.8) would perfom better. In fact my 55-210mm lens doens't stay much on my Nex6 camera, but its needed in some cases. Perhaps a second hand buy with much less money and provided that its in mint condition would be a better buy.

Being relatively new to purchasing my own lenses (having always borrowed from friends in the past), I'm glad I bought this one. It gives beautiful quality photos and captures motion so well. Whilst photographing some rather hyperactive dogs, it managed to catch the water that flew off their wet coats (even if I wasn't fast enough on the uptake to frame the image properly) as they shook. My camera battery was dying when I decided to try this lens, so I was rather conservative with the shots and usage but from what I did capture, I was very impressed with. Seems like a great lens for the price point and I'd highly recommend it.
