I bought this lens along with the Sony A6300 mirrorless camera as a first-time purchase since moving on from a bridge camera. Took ages a while back reasearching making a decision so as to make the best choice, mistakingly choosing another more expensive Panasonic FZ1000 Bridge on route, two of them having to be returned. The lens on such Panasonics was dreadful in terms of build quality and was what caused me to quickly appreciate that you have to pay more for a quality camera and lens.So my experience had me jump again and went mirrorless buying this lens which for my first sojourn into such lenses I am thoroughly impressed. The beautiful smooth zooming is a delight particularly for video and with constant f4 you have no exposure re-adjustments to make during the transition.Unlike the FZ1000 lense the Sony is solidly built, you can just feel it in your hands, that builds a sense of confidence in the lens that has only grown with use. I am unlikely to buy other lenses for my Sony A6300 camera, as I don't see myself as that type of photographer, Part of the reason is the facilities on this lens like the FL of 18-105mm (157mm full frame equivalent) along with the camera make for a fantastic combination of quality that is unlikely to have them separated in our household.Moving from long 25x zooms of bridge cameras I realised the number of times you actually take such long high-zoom images eventually is rare. Hence the 8x zoom of this camera is more than adequate with the Sony A6300 camera allowing me a smooth seemless transition to another 4x digital zoom anyway (32x in total) in the rare occassions I might need it, and still leaving me a quality 6M image. One last thing I never appreciated till I got it, the lens does not extend when you zoom, which is great. Yes it stcks out a bit further than other lenses as a consequence of that charactaristic, but it is balanced in the hand and that balance remains throughout the zoom.I love the lens after the huge learning curve to get to mirrorless, will never look back now.

I have had this lens for around a year and have used it with A6300 and A6400.Pros:- Build quality. Although not on par with Sony’s full frame range, the build quality on the lens is great. It feels very solid, and having dropped it on concrete, I can definitely say that the lens can withstand some beating;- Focal range. On APS-C camera, it is equivalent to 27-158mm which makes it a great all-around option for travel camera set up;- Silent focusing and image stabilisation. The focus motor is very snappy and literally silent. Combine that with built-in image stabilisation and you get a killer video combo;- Overall image quality is decent (see examples attached). It’s not nearly on par with something like Sigma primes, but that’s expected given the zoom range and price (see more below).Cons:- The size. The fact that zooming is done internally means that you end up with a chunkier lens than most other APS-C lenses for mirrorless cameras out there. Given that A6000 series of cameras are remarkably small and light, using this lens makes the set up noticeably front heavy;- Image quality in the corners is not great. At F4.0 the corners are noticeably soft. Having said that, this gets improved around F7.1 which is probably the aperture most people will use for maximum sharpness anyway.- Price. This definitely isn’t a budget lens. However, it almost always gets included in Sony’s cashback offers which tend to run 4 times per year – so definitely do your research before buying.Overall – if you are looking for one all around lens for your A6000 series and don’t want to splash out on 16-55mm F2.8, this should be at the top of your list.

This lens fit my needs with its OSS and good range of focal length, however I was concerned about the power zoom based on the performance of the kit lens.I was wrong to worry. The PZ is entirely different to the kit lens. It’s unbelievably smooth, and utterly silent. With the kit lens, there’s one speed. The PZ on this lens is variable. Some reviews have said it is 2 speed, but they’re wrong. It’s very variable. Nudge the button a teeny tiny bit and it’ll go so slow and buttery you’ll hardly notice it. You can slowly push your finger up to steadily increase the speed of zoom. It’s fantastic. The OSS is like magic on my a6300.I’ve only had it for a few days but at higher focal lengths I couldn’t live without it.I have large hands so the size is actually a positive for me - when walking around I prefer to hold my camera by the lens with a wrist strap. It also means there’s plenty to hold onto when using the camera. The kit lens is awfully fiddly and it’s hard to know where to put your hand. It feels silly holding such a small leas from underneath as if supporting it, but of course with the PZ you have to. No issues there with this one! This lens is beautiful. Others have spoken about the more obvious things, so I wanted to add some less talking about aspects for those reading these reviews. You won’t regret buying it. My goal is to have this lens, and the three Sigma primes (16, 30, and 56). With the 16, I’m halfway there!

I mostly shoot video on my Sony a6300, so the constant f/4 aperture and OSS image stabilisation were the main reasons for choosing this lens.I've used it on multiple shoots and it's a great all rounder. Zoom and focus by wire functions take a bit of getting used to. If you're used to canon lenses it can feel a bit weird at first as there is a slight delay, your hand movement on the focus/zoom ring doesn't correlate exactly with what happens on the screen. However, the servo zoom function is good and quite sensitive, so it's easy to control the speed of the zoom.I've attached a video I shot completely with this lens.I used the Canon 24-105 f/4 for years and it's a great lens,i've moved over to Sony now so this was a logical choice at the price point. Also having the wider angle at 18mm is actually really useful. Before I would reach for the Canon 16-35 f/2.8 but I don't really have to now.Pixel peepers will definitely pick a few more flaws out at wider angles and sharpness in the corners, but honestly it's perfect for what I need.I've also used it with the Zhiyun crane, it works well, however you might prefer to turn OSS off as the two systems can interfere with each other. Still though, it's a great combo if you can't afford to buy separate prime lenses or just have that 'run n gun' shooting style.Happy to answer questions if anyone has them :)

I have a couple of lenses for my Sony A6000 Camera, all of which are great in their own areas, however I didn't have one that covered a decent focal range starting from a nice wide angle view.Sony have a fair amount of zoom lenses on offer, however the 'SELP18105G' was more in my budget than others; plus it ticked all the right boxes: 18-105mm Focal length (27–157.5mm (APS-C)) | Constant F/4 aperture | 'Power Zoom' | Zoom is quiet. The lens itself actually weighs more than my camera (427g, compared to the A6000 which weighs in at 344g), however this hasn't bothered me the slightest.Anyone looking for filters (at least get a UV filter to protect the lens), it fits 72mm filters. The zoom is completely electronic,so it doesn't matter if you're using the power zoom slider or twisting the zoom ring, it won't zoom whilst the camera is turned off. What I really like about the zoom that all the optics stay inside the housing of the lens, unlike my other zoom lens which will stick out the more you increase its zoom. It's also very quiet that I can't hear it when it's zooming in or out (very positive feature to have when filming). So far I've used it more for videography than photography, however the photos I have taken with it have came out sharp and clear.

Good lens overall with a few drawbacks. Comparison to my Zeiss 18-70mm.IQ is decent across the lens but not as sharp as the Zeiss in the 18-50 range. The Zeiss is also brighter. That said, it’s built well and has the extra reach if that suits. However, it’s too big and heavy for an a6300/6500 body IMO.The main issue I have, which meant a return, was the focus by wire zoom. It’s laggy so there’s a delay in starting and stopping zooming - this is the same with the zoom ring and the power zoom controls. Zoom to 70mm and let go and you end up at 76mm or a little closer than you want. Same zooming out. This means you always need to fine tune which wastes time.I’ll take a well produced manual zoom every day for speed and accuracy.Sure the Zeiss is more and doesn’t reach as far but it’s a much brighter compact lens with a better zoom implementation. Which all adds up to better shots. If you can pick one up used (a good copy without the known issues) then it’s in the same range as this and worth the extra.

if you are likely to filming a lot of video, then this is the lens for you. not just because it has a motorised zoom, but because this lens has one ace up its sleeve, virtually no chromatic aberration. this is impressive for a zoom lens of this price range. photographs can have chromatic aberration removed, but not with video, its stuck there. it has a very smooth bokeh at max zoom, this looks great on video too. it is sharp at full zoom too. one other thing that this lens is good for, Gimbal use. if you use a gimbal, you can't have a zoom lens that extends or retracts, as this throws off the balance. the lens must not extend. as this lens has internal zooming, it works great on a gimbal, which gives you a steadi cam look to your videos. yes, it takes good photos too, but for video, its a no brainer at this price.

Excellent all-rounder lens for outdoors photography. Super-sharp with a very convenient focal length range. The sturdy body remains the same length when using the power zoom so that your gimbals won't be confused. It's a perfect match for those looking to shoot video or have one all-rounder lens e.g for travel. What it lacks in portability it makes up in being the right tool for most jobs. Throw the Sony 18-105 and one specialty lens (fast portrait, macro, or a wide angle) into your kit and you cover 99% of your needs. Only downsides are its bulk compared to other lenses on my A6300, f/4 (as opposed to faster lenses) and the focusing distance (you will not be taking many close ups with this one).Other than those, it's pretty much perfect. Certainly growing to be my favourite lens.

I purchased this after reading endless reviews and watching hours of video reviews.Let me give you some advice: if you are thinking about buying a lens that is versatile, can adapt to many situations and has a very fast AF - then this lens is for you - at this price you really cannot go wrong - it's TAC sharp - it really is - the sweet spot is around 71mm @ F6.3/7.1 - it comes to life. @ a 100% crop I am astounded by it's centre sharpness.I purchased the HOYA Revo UV filter for it as I wanted to protect it - photographing kids around splashing water etc.The Bokeh this lens provides is second to none - close to my FE Zeiss 55F18.... for portrait photography again with Face Detection active it's amazing.Even at a 100% Crop the sharpness is just incredible.

I bought this lens to go with my Sony A5100. I have a number of primes but wanted something a little more versatile and covering a wider range, for those times when you don't want to carry several lenses around with you, the 18-105 fitted my requirements perfectly. In my opinion the IQ is generally better all round than the 16-50 kit lens, and of course it has a much wider range. It is a large lens, especially when mounted on the A5100, but somehow it works and it doesn't feel to front heavy, in fact, it's quite comfortable to use. It's the most expensive lens in my collection but, it met my requirements in terms of range perfectly, it feels like (and is) a quality product, can deliver excellent IQ and overall,I'm very happy with my purchase.

I bought this lens to go with my Sony A5100. I have a number of primes but wanted something a little more versatile, the 18-105 fitted my requirements perfectly. In my opinion the IQ is generally better than the 16-50 kit lens under all conditions and of course, it has a much wider range. Under the right conditions it can even rival a couple of my primes. It is a large lens, especially when mounted on the A5100, but somehow it works and it doesn't feel too front heavy, in fact, I find it quite comfortable to use. So I'm a bit of a novice, having recently moved from compacts to mirrorless. I bought this as an upgrade to the 16-50mm kit lens that came with my A6000 to give slightly more range and so far am very pleased; the sustained large aperture makes capturing the kids from a distance relatively straightforward even when e.g. riding their bikes. Autofocus is pretty quick and generally reliable, and the combination of a sharp image and nice bokeh has definitely upped my game.I'm sure in the hands of a more capable user the strengths and limitations of this lens would become magnified, but for me this is a lens that can do 90% of what I'm looking for and as such it is spending most of its time firmlyfixed to the front of my camera.

Looks and feels nice, Much sharper than Zeiss kit lens provided with my Sony NEX 7. Does take a while to start up but results so far are very crisp with natural subtle colours. I believe the distortion you get with most wide angled zooms can be a problem if you shoot in raw but is corrected for j/pegs. I shoot j/pegs so have not had a problem. It is primarily a video lens and has a power zoom but I use it manually as I only shoot pics. Unlike kit lens, is very sharp at F4 and gorgeous around F11. Obviously it is a bit of a beast compared to smaller kit lens but I needed the quality this lens provides as I shoot semi professionally for books/magazines etc.

Recently purchased this as the default lens doesn't have enough range. You can feel the quality of the build when you open the box. The length of the lens doesn't change when you zoom as this function is internal and reduces the risk of dust entering the lens. I've taken a few pictures with it, the weather hasn't been kind and the quality is excellent. Some small black dots in the sea were distinguishable as a pair of cormorants. The zoom function isn't manual but you can either use a switch or twist the barrel and there is a manual focus ring on it too. Hopefully get some better weather over the next few days and I'll try and add some sample pictures.

I use this lense to shoot shoulder mounted interviews, wide shots, corporate activity, events etc. sometimes in quite low light. This lense has an excellent clear picture throughout the zoom range and nice shallow depth of field if you feel the need to create this. Even being F4 - not the fastest - it picks up plenty of light for my purposes. Looking forward to trying it with a brand new A6300 too. The Steady Shot means I can do without a tripod more often. The only weird thing which takes some getting used to is the servo zoom which is still very smooth but feels totally different to a mechanical zoom ring. This is also excellent value for money.
