We had to buy a new bin earlier this year and, seduced by gadgetry, we bought one that has a lid that automatically opens when you place your hand near it. What a mistake that was! Anyway, after this broke having had it for just two months, we were in the market again for a new bin, and decided on the simplehuman 50 litre bin, wanting something that was quite large, and would last a long time.My wife's initial response was "how much have you spent on the bin?!?" when she found out how much it cost, but she's now changed her tune entirely. The bin itself is made of very sturdy plastic, and has a very wide top, which makes it ideal as it lessens the chances of getting dirt and detritus down the sides of the bin (yes, you wouldn't think it's hard to accurately put stuff into a bin, but my teenage children seem to find it very challenging). The lid itself is opearated by a foot pedal which also seems sturdy; under the foot pedal is a little metal fold-out stand that helps to support the bin and keep it upright. When you take your foot off the pedal when the bin is open, the lid then closes very slowly, which is a very nice touch - it means you can just press the pedal so the bin is open, then take your foot off and still have time to eg scrape food waste in, without having to worry about the lid closing too quickly.I've seen some reviews moan about the fact that the bin stands some way away from a wall so moves backwards when the lid opens; well, I don't see how this can happen; there's another metal fold-out piece just behind the bin that rests against the wall, and stops this happening. What's also good is that because the bin is wide, it's easy to get binliners out without any problems. They simply unhook from around the sides, then lift out very easily indeed, unlike our previous two bins. The bin comes with a sample pack of SimpleHuman 'P' size binbags, which are meant to be tailored for Simplehuman bins of this size. These fit perfectly, and we've been so impressed with these binbags (a LOT stronger than normal black bin-liners) that we've since bought a couple of boxes of 50 of these binbags, so we have a good stock. Not having a dog, we haven't used the lid-lock function (if you press the handle in, the bin locks), but it did provide five minutes entertainment when we locked it and then watched our teenage daughter trying to work out how to open it. Sometimes I worry about the future of the human race...I have to say that this bin isn't the cheapest (although it's a LOT cheaper than a more well-known brand I also considered), but it really couldn't be any better. I never thought I'd be sitting here enthusing over a bin, but here I am! My only moan (and this is a very small moan indeed) is that the bin is shipped with the lid not attached; you'll need to be fairly strong to fit it, as you have to press it in so hard that you're a bit worried the hinge catches will break. However in hindsight this is also a good thing, as it means that there's no danger of it ever coming off. This is a superb bin, and I can't recommend it enough.

I was looking for a large capacity pedal bin that wasn't going to set me back almost 100 quid (like many large Brabantia bins). So on reading so many positive reviews of this simplehuman 50 litre bin ("CW1355") I ordered one. And I'm very pleased with it! It's clearly well designed, with many good points:- Although it's plastic rather than steel, it's sturdy and stable - it doesn't tip or wobble when the pedal is pressed.- The pedal is steel so it should last. (simplehuman's warranty on this bin is 5 years.)- The lid closes softly, and can be left open if lifted manually.- The sliding lock on the lid is apparently handy for preventing young children and pets from raiding the bin.(The lock is secure but doesn't grip tightly on the bin's rim, so it doesn't rip the top of the bin liner.)- The semi-round design allows it to stand neatly against a wall (though a bit of clearance is needed - see below).A few things to note:- The bin liner is placed directly into the bin - there is no removable inner bin/bucket.- The dimensions of the bin (according to the simplehuman website) are 480mm x 673mm x 355mm (W x H x D). However, to allow the lid to remain open when lifted manually, a gap must be left behind the bin. Consequently, the front of the lid (the deepest part of the bin) extends 390mm (15.5in) from the wall. When the lid is closed, there needs to be a gap of 38mm (1.5in) between the back of the lid and the wall. Tip: To maintain this gap, a block/box/other suitable item can be put on the floor behind the bin to stop it from sliding up against the wall. Since the base of the bin is not as deep as the lid, the thickness of the block needs to be 106mm (4.25in) minus the thickness of any skirting board.- The simplehuman type 'P' bin liners are recommended for this bin. However, I buy rolls of "Waitrose Essential 30 Swing Bin Liners with Drawstring for bins up to 60 litre, rim 126cm length 73cm" - they are almost the same size as the simplehuman 'P' liners (same width but slightly shorter), and perhaps not quite as strong. But the Waitrose liners are cheaper, and I've had no problems with them splitting.- Since the bin is plastic it seems to attract a bit of dust, which is noticeable since it's black. But that can be quickly removed with a damp cloth. In summary, this simplehuman 50 litre bin is great! I wish I'd bought it sooner!

I disliked my old bin a lot as it was too small generally, so was looking for a bigger bin that was well made and fit nicely into my kitchen. I dislike metal bins as they end up with finger marks all over them and they are the devil's work to remove and keep off in general use. This seemed to suit my needs perfectly and it looked great. I awaited its arrival anxiously! It arrived very well packed and in perfect condition, no flaws anywhere in its manufacture. I like that as I like quality products. It did seem quite huge to me initially, probably due to my other kitchen bin being so small. I didn't buy the propriety bin bags that they make for this as they seemed too expensive so I decided to see if it would work OK with the large black bin bags I already had in my cupboard. It did :) The large black bags I had fit in perfectly and all I needed to do was tie it at the side and it was a perfect fit. I also think black bin bags look better in this as the bin itself is black and the one's they sell for it are white ?? seems odd to me, I like using black bags.Using it is a dream. The pedal opens the bin fully and when you release your foot from the pedal it closes slowly, so no large bang as the lid shuts. Perfect. The plastic it is made from is very thick, hard-wearing and excellent quality.I am totally delighted with this bin, it was worth every penny and it looks great in my kitchen.A good decision. My old bin is now happily gone and I love my new one :)RECOMMENDED !!

I cannot tell you how many kitchen bins we have bought, which have failed for one reason or another! Our last bin creates such a strong vacuum when removing the bag for emptying that we had to wrestle with it each time. It was ridiculous!Anyway, we binned that one off (rubbish pun, sorry ?) and as a temporary measure, we used bin bags out of a washing basket. We soon realised that we had inadvertently resolved our problem! A wide mouth! So I went in search and came across this ... It’s ideal! I note some reviewers saying that it sits too proud away from the wall but on ours, this is an optional feature by way of a pull-out bar for if you don’t wish your bin to touch the wall. It’s the *optional*.The only “but” (there’s always at least one isn’t there ?) is a rather curious lock feature which is designed to keep your pet out of the bin! Unfortunately, it also keeps the user out as it’s tricky to unlock! The pedal appears to be the best method of unlocking but it’s a bit hit and miss. That said, it’s not a deal breaker for us but I’m afraid I have dropped a review star as I feel it’s an unnecessary gimmick. Still, at least we can get the damned bag out now!

Very pleased with this bin. It is so much smarter than my old bin, though my main reason for the purchase was the fact that it is lockable. In fact I haven't needed to lock it to stop the dog from opening it and helping herself, as she hasn't been able to open it so far. I have the useful lock though if/when she does. The only slight downside for me was fitting the lit. I got the little 'hook' part fitted immediately, but couldn't see how to snap the other two parts on. I was attempting to do it with the bin lid open, as that appeared to be the instruction. Then my husband, having aligned the parts correctly, closed the bin and pressed down on the back part. First there was one satisfyingly loud click then another. All sorted and has been much admired. Thanks to the reviewer who mentioned the depth of the bin plus extra bit for opening, As a result of this info I had already thought of an alternative spot for it and am very pleased with the new arrangement and the bin. Just need to upgrade the kitchen now to standard of bin!

I love this bin. As a single mum of twins I was looking for something big but light enough and with a lock. I’ve got good kids but they’re curious and I don’t want them to put something into their mouths if I look away for one second. Or alternatively throw things into the bin not intended! Several (twin) parents recommended this to me but I hesitated because some of the reviews saying the lock wore off easily or the colour went off etc I’ve had this now or several months and it prevents my kids throwing or taking stuff from rubbish, the lock is a bit hard to manoeuvre with two fingers to start with but this is exactly the point, it looks as good as new and shows no signs of use,it’s smart looking enough to fit my kitchen, doesn’t show finger prints, and although bin bags have to be bought from the brand, they are high quality and really easy to use. I can highly recommend this product. Exactly what I would expect for the price. A*****

So far, being a simple human, I cannot even assemble the bin and the instructions are minimal. I can already see that there are no built in wheels but that would not really cause me a problem despite having been told in the description that they would be there. Size K bags are required apparently so I have been generously provided with size P! If I can assemble the bin I will provide further feedback and potentially raise my rating...? Otherwise it will have to go back. Such a bother.Ok. Now that lid is finally assembled I am becoming rather attached to this bin. I love that the lid stays open when you want to peel veg straight into it. One design flaw that I can see is that the lid has a lot of grooves in it that will make it hard to clean. And I'm not taking the lid off again to do that! Too hard! (Updated 1/12/16)

It arrived today, with some bags free and a 5 year warranty that was easy to set up online. The bags that are suggested by Amazon on the "buy these two items together for.." are not accurate and they should be the P bags not the Q. But I will try them anyway rather than return them. The bin is a good size, really wide lid so I feel when I try to throw bigger things away it will get it all without ending up on the floor etc. The pedal is good for the no touch aspect and I like the quiet close function. The metal handle to stop pets is brilliant at stopping my 18 month old toddler! It sits flushly against the wall and has freed up a significant amount of space. Totally happy with it.

I bought this bin to stop our Labrador from getting into the bin when no one is around. It is dog proof when locked and fixed to the wall. (He managed to get in to it when we forgot to lock it). A wall bracket is not supplied which is needed. We have had it since Christmas and the latch has a hair line crack on it. I assume it’s been caused by us pushing it to lock it and open it. I shall try and contact the manufactures to see if they will send us a new lid.We use Lidl bin bags for it. The ones supplied are expensive to replace. I think it is expensive, but does the job. I would have given it 5 stars if the latch didn’t have a crack on it.

I love this bin! It’s a great size for a family of 5. The reason I bought it was to keep my dog out of the bin using the lock feature. The lock is SO useful but I find it very stuff to unlock, takes two hands and some patience. Hopefully that’ll ease, I’ve only had it for a month or so.I also notice there’s no inner bin to take out and wash which might become a problem in the future, would need a hose down in the garden. The shape is perfect against the wall, it doesn’t stick out.My friends and family have commented on it too, saying they are looking for something just like this!I’ll be buying another for my recycling bin next.

Never thought I'd say it but I'm in love with my bin. I wasn't able to leave my kitchen door open because my dog has been able to open every bin... so far! But not this one. The only downside for me is that the lock is quite tight for me as I am disabled. The bin is sturdy and doesn't mark easily. The only thing that did annoy me was that on the site it says that it takes one size of bags and I ordered that size not knowing that it would come with a sample of bags... in a DIFFERENT size. So now I'm stuck with bags that don't fit the bin. So I'd highly recommend the bin but don't buy the bags suggested on the site. They don't fit!!

I am very pleased with this kitchen bin. It is a perfect size, pedal mechanism and slow-close work really well and the dog lock has been very useful. We are a family of four and recycle as much as we can, consequently this bin only needs emptying once a week. It is quite wide which is useful for tipping things in from a chopping board. I was a bit dubious about how robust it would be, being plastic, but it is fine and feels very sturdy. Bought this to replace a metal slim tall kitchen bin and this is loads better. Would definitely recommend, good price for the quality of the product.

Couldn't work out how to fit lid had to YouTube it and then I was fine also couldn't work out why bin didn't stand straight until a few days later with it bugging my brain I pulled a lever and it stood balanced. It's ok I like the idea of the lock astetically I don't find it appealing a nice metallic black would show I spent money as it is very expensive for bog standard hard plastic a metal would be nice but on the whole it does its job and bags are easy to remove and install. It's very nice that they give you a free trial of simply human bags that was a lovely surprise

The bin is slender and a a good shape which fits into small areas, it holds a lot of waste and looks good. After opening the bin with the foot peddle the lid closes slowly by it self after use, which I like.Would have awarded 5 stars if the hinge's under the foot peddle weren't plastic.Bought my first peddle bin over one year ago which comes with a 5 year warranty. Unfortunately the foot peddles plastic hinge broke, I contacted customer services who were fantastic, after faxing them a copy of my receipt they replaced my bin straight away.

Had this since February 2019 and it still works great. Nice and deep. There are reviews that says this moves - mine does as well but we've fixed the problem by having sticky hooks under the metal rail that's behind the bin. This stops the bin from travelling when you press the foot pedal. It would have been good if there were clips or special rails inside the bin to stop the bag from sliding down. However it's lasted this long, it's got a deep volume and is still as strong as when we first got it. Very happy with this product.
