The Mac Special edition of the GoFlex Free Agent is a 1 TB hard drive with switchable adapters to connect it to USB 2.0 or Firewire 800, with adapters to other standards purchasable for about half the price of the drive. It comes Mac formatted to HFS+ which makes it compatible with Time Machine, but only compatible with Windows if you download special drivers (which you won't be able to do on most machines at work). It draws its power from the FireWire or USB connection but, probably because of that, you can't daisy chain more FireWire devices, meaning you can't use it with a FireWire card reader. The unit is finished in a silvery soft plastic which seems to have a particular affinity for dust, thought it does appear to offer more than basic protection. The special adapters click nicely in place, and seem solid enough. The USB adapter just connects to a mini-USB cable (supplied), but the FireWire adapter has its cable hardwired in, which means you can't use a longer cable if you need one, and it is susceptible to all the usual damage of hardwired cables. It comes with its own Mac management software, though this requires a reboot once installed. You don't actually need it to run the drive. The full name for this device is the Seagate STBA Free Agent GoFlex Special Edition for Mac, and it shows. This is a device which is trying so hard to be everything to everyone that it doesn't quite deliver a great result to anyone. As a portable drive it's decent enough, about the weight of a Penguin book and the size of an oversized smartphone. The special FireWire connector is a bit bulky, but the USB is diddy enough. The trouble is, because Windows requires special drivers to use it, you won't be able to connect this effectively to any locked-down corporate computer, since these are usually locked down to stop users installing illegal software, games, viruses, and drivers for unauthorised devices. As one of the big advantages of portable drives is exactly the ability to transfer files from your home computer to your work computer, this might well be a deal breaker. As a desktop external drive the presence of FireWire 800 makes this fast enough to be used in Digital Video and for most other tasks which normally require an on-board drive. But the absence of a second FireWire port to daisy chain means that this has to be the end of the line, and so can't be used with other non-chaining devices such as DV cameras, FireWire card readers and the like.As a future-proof device, the ability to later upgrade to eSATA, USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt is interesting, but the cost of the additional cables is so much that you could buy a competing portable drive for more or less the same money. By the time you really need to upgrade -- assuming you don't right now -- the prices of drives will have dropped again, and you'll be able to get 4TB for the same money. This drive is a great idea in principle, but it isn't sufficiently good at any one application to lift it above the crowd, and it's odd proprietary connection and Windows unfriendly formatting are just ever so slightly clunky.

This is an expensive drive. My current 1TB drive was about £70, so this is quite a bit more expensive. However, it does have some unique features.First of all this is really designed for Apple OSX, it will work with windows fine but will need to be reformatted (start, run, type diskmgmt.msc and delete then create new partition and reformat from there) before if can be used. I used it on Mountain Lion and it worked straight out of the box.The first thing that struck me was the size of the drive - it's the same length as an iPhone 4 and only slightly wider. Very compact for an external drive. The case is plastic with a aluminium colouring which I suspect will wear over time and leave white fade marks. It's a shame it's not made of real aluminium for the price. The really interesting feature is that the connector is interchangeable. The actual drive housing has the SATA power and data leads exposed and you clip on the relevant interface. It comes with firewire and USB1/2 as standard and you can buy Thunderbolt as an extra connector. This is the first time I've seen something like this and think it could be really useful, especially if you upgrade to a faster computer. In use the drive has 931Gb free from startup and works as fast as you'd expect. It is almost totally silent too - no vibration and the smallest hum while it's copying files. There are two lights to show power and activity. The drive comes with a small bit of software that's pretty much useless. You install it and you can turn the drive lights off, test the drive and get the serial number and capacity of the thing. Quite pointless. Easy to install (although why it demands a restart I don't know) and just as easy to remove. Oh, it also changes the drive icon on the desktop. sigh. One other feature worth mentioning is that it can also be used as a Time Capsule. Apple's 1Tb device is currently around £199, and while you also get a switch/wireless access point for that money it's also a lot larger and gets very hot. In comparison this drive could easily be used as a silent, always connected backup device. I suspect that I may end up replacing my Time Capsule with this drive in the near future.Overall this drive gets five stars (I'm ignoring the software which may be for the best!) due to the speed and silence in general operation and also for the unique interface - I wont currently get any benefit from it, but if i upgrade to Thunderbolt then it will be a key feature and worth the extra cost (especially if you are going to transfer large amounts of data regularly)Recommended

This is a great drive for transferring data between Mac and PC, as it comes with both a USB2 and a Firewire800 cable. The drive itself has a proprietary Seagate connector on the back, to which you connect either the Firewire or the USB interface "header", which clicks into the back of the drive and looks like an integral part of the drive (thankfully). On the Firewire800 side, the header and cable are one, however on the USB one, they are separate, the cable being a standard USB to Mini-USB which plugs into the header.Performance wise, no complaints it's very fast, the unit it's incredibly small and lightweight. It also has a nice "grippy" feel.As mentioned, it's Mac orientated, so comes pre-formatted for Mac.If you want to use it exclusively in a PC, you will need to delete the main partition using Disk Management (and if you want to use ALL the disk space, you will have to use "diskpart" to delete the 200MB EFI system partition too - for some reason, Windows disk management does not allow deletion of the EFI system partition - see my instructions at the bottom of this review ).All in all, a fantastic portable harddrive, incredible amount of storage for such a small device. Highly recommended for Mac and PC users alike. Don't be put off by the proprietary connector on the back, it actually enables lots of connection options, including USB3 and E-SATA (neither included in this kit).<<<<<<<<<<<<END OF REVIEW>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Windows7 full space reclaim:Start, Run, DiskpartDISKPART> list diskDisk ### Status Size Free Dyn Gpt-------- ------------- ------- ------- --- ---Disk 0 Online 186 GB 29 GBDisk 1 Online 55 GB 0 BDisk 2 No Media 0 B 0 BDisk 3 No Media 0 B 0 BDisk 4 Online 931 GB 0 B <<<<<<<<<<<<<<SELECT THE CORRECT DISK!!!DISKPART> select disk 4Disk 4 is now the selected disk.DISKPART> cleanDiskPart succeeded in cleaning the disk.DISKPART> create partition primaryDiskPart succeeded in creating the specified partition.DISKPART> format recommended quick100 percent completedDiskPart successfully formatted the volume.DISKPART> exit

Seagate have managed to shoehorn a 1TB hard drive into a remarkably small enclosure. It's only marginally bigger than some smartphones. It does weigh a little more and, of course, it needs a cable so its not ultra-portable but it's the best I've come across. You could certainly carry it in a briefcase without feeling you were lugging around a really big external drive. It draws power from the computer so there is no external power supply to bother with. There is a little software bundle on the drive (aimed at Mac users) which enables you to test the drive and also turn off the activity lights if you want.Firewire connection works well.I have it in a daisy chain with another firewire drive and I was getting transfer speeds of 50 mbps on a 1.2 gb file.A couple of things to be aware of.1. The firewire connection to the drive itself is a proprietary Seagate one. The usb one does have a proprietary connection but that does accommodate a micro-usb connection. There's nothing wrong with the proprietary firewire connection. Indeed there are a couple of points in its favour. It makes a neat finish to the drive when it is all connected up. And you know exactly what the cable it which is helpful given the ever increasing number of cables we all seem to acquire.2. There is no pass through connector on this drive so it can only be at the end of a daisy chain. This is not a criticism - adding one would partly defeat the object of the exercise which is to keep it small and portable.I've only just taken delivery of it so cannot comment on long term reliability. All in all I think it is a brilliant piece of kit.Edit: I am grateful to Clashcity Rocker for pointing out an error about the usb connector.

It was only last month that I received, reviewed and raved about the Seagate STBU1000201 1TB Portable Hard Drive so it was with great excitement that I took on the opportunity to look at this very similar drive designed especially for Mac. Don't get me wrong, you can use the previous drive for Mac but this particular one has two extra features. Firstly the drive has two different connectible tops one with a USB connection and the second with a FireWire800 one. This, plus the second feature which is the default NPS+ formatting means that when you are using the drive with a mac it delivers that extra boost of speed and works instantly with time machine. The drive itself is small and compact, but doesn't have the same quality feel of the STBU1000201 Drive. It feels heavier and more plastic in the hand and the removable top part doesn't help with this. You can still feel the movement of the drive when its whirring around inside, which isn't a problem but is probably expected given the size of the device and the push to make it pocket portable. The previous drive also works for mac, so if you had to pin me down for a preference I'd probably go with that one - but there's nothing much between them and it's probably worth noting that this one works on PC too after a quick and easy driver install.Overall this is a great little drive for your mac or pc but doesn't quite deliver on the quality feel or size of the previous one I've reviewed. Don't let that stop you buying it though because if you want a Firewire connecting, very portable hard drive then look no further.

This excellent portable hard drive with a 1Tb capacity seems to be built well, feels good in the hand with its slightly rubberised surface and is 'apple-like' in its colour if you are trying to match it to your macbook. The choice of clip on interfaces for Firewire and USB are the weak point of the design. The click in place adaptors for the two systems are going to be the long term weakness of the product. Having both sockets built into the body would have made it a few millimetres longer but ultimately less likely to cause a problem. It is not as if you can take the drive anywhere without the interface adaptor.Like most Apple accessories it is very expensive with a similar PC product approximately 30% cheaper. It is easily reformattable to use on a PC or a downloadable piece of software from Seagate's website allows it to be used without reformatting. The Apple-tax that inevitably makes this type of accessory far more expensive than it should be has been argued on forums since the Mac came out, I don't suppose we will do anything about it now. Seagate have a good pedigree with this type of product and are usually my first choice when buying external drives. If you need a 1Tb external, this is a good choice, but if I was a personal Mac user with no need for PC compatibility I would look for another unit that didn't have the removable interface, i.e. was Firewire only, just to ensure the snap-on part doesn't become a problem.

I have had my Goflex for 4 months now so still early days. It was purchased as a previous make of drive (MyPassport) corrupted and became unusable after a year so I will see how this is going in 12 months time. So far though it works very well and backs up smoothly without any hassle. I should mention that I am using it straight to Time Machine and haven't even looked at the software that comes with it, mainly because I did that with my old drive and the software just confused matters.I like that it comes with two separate cables, one FireWire and one USB which came in handy for the following issue. My only grip, and the reason it doesn't get five stars,is that when using the FIre Wire cable it kept "dropping" off the computer and disconnecting. Usually taking it out and re-plugging did the trick but this week it failed to do this. At first I thought that it was the drive that had failed but when I reconnected using the USB cable it worked fine. It has now been replaced by the supplier who were very helpful. So what went wrong? Well on reflection I think that it may have been an overheating issue, as the temperatures were sky high when it failed completely and it does get hot at the connection. I tend to keep it plugged in for constant back ups so may be only plugging it in to do a back up is the key. I would be interested in what others think.

The drive really is plug-and-play! I didn't bother with the software - it wasn't necessary. The disk image mounted on my Mac desktop instantly, and it really is very nearly a full TB of space that's available to use. I instantly put it through its paces using the USB 2 lead and did a Time Machine back up. This was about 300GB of info, and it did it without so much as a backward glance. Took about 4 hours. In terms of portability, it's truly slick, fitting in a pocket effortlessly. It looks and feels robustly built, and stylish, too - though that's an irrelevance if the hardware isn't any good. I guess any product like this has the potential to fail - it's a hard-drive, after all, they can do that - but there's no reason to expect that to be the case here, and based on other reviews online, it seems to be reliable. The leads attach with a satisfying firmness that re-assures. All in all, an excellent product for someone (a Mac user, anyway) on the move. The one down side is the lead/s - as the adaptor parts of them are a little ungainly, and you'd have to take them with you, why not incorporate the ports into the design? True, the drive would then be bigger, but the leads smaller.... a little self-defeating.

This drive is brilliant because:✅? it's so very silent; and✅ runs cool ? in stark contrast to my last drive ?(by Iomega)✅ requires no power cable required, so less clutter.✅ extra smallBORING ASIDES=========? I have used it mostly with my Mac Mini, which has a FireWire 800 connecter (as well as USB2). (Man, I'm glad I don't have a newer Mac Mini, as those require Thunderbolt for super-good performance, and that add-on is crazy-expensive ?).It is "only" USB2, but if you have FireWire 800 (as I do), it's not really a concern. And you can always get a USB3 adapter separately - the modular system Seagate has implemented works a treat. I'm starting to love Seagate. ?I got a Seagate drive, reduced,at my local PC World superstore and it came with a component that can be swapped out and used with this drive.? The colour matches my Mac Mini very well (despite being plastic instead of metal)? This "Special Edition" iteration is even smaller than the "normal" edition, which is pretty small anyway. It's kind of a marvel.⌛ I updated this review after 5 months of use, adding a note about reliability. It has worked flawlessly ever single day. (I use it as my Final Cut Pro Scratch drive)

The product description highlights this external hard drive is targeted at Mac users, it can be used with windows but the documentation suggests a software download is required. It is securely packaged and arrives with adapters and cables for both Firewire800 and USB 2.0 and is cased in a silver shell which nearly but not exactly matches my other Apple products. It does not require a separate power source. The drive is formatted and ready to go as a Mac drive. I plugged it using the included Firewire cable in and it was recognised immediately and mounted on my desktop as a browsable disk. I ignored the included diagnostic software as there seemed to be no need to install anything and I chose to use it as a Time Machine backup drive(for my 2009 macbook pro). The disk showed 999.6GB of free space. In operation it is basically silent, I could not detect any spinning vibrations and the only side effect was the drive got a bit warm after extended use. It took about 2 hours to complete the near 200gb backup.I cannot come up with any meaningful criticism of this drive at all.

This hard-drive (although more expensive than an alternative USB3 drive) is a nice piece of kit. It's small, light and sturdy. It's a little plasticky, but that's not an issue for me.My reason for purchasing this particular drive is because I have an iMac 2011 which doesn't have any USB3 connections, but does have a firewire 800 connection - equally as fast. Another strong reason for getting the Seagate GoFlex is because you can upscale it to the much faster Thunderbolt connector (20 times faster than usb2). I'm aware the connector needed to be able to do this is expensive, but over time, I hope the price will drop, or I'll be able to pick up one on ebay. Another option available is to use it with usb2.The connections which come in the box are Firewire 800 and usb2 cables.I plugged it in and it worked straight away. It's also formatted ready to use Time Machine. As long as it doesn't fail in reliability, I'd recommend this product.Apple store are selling this product £25 more than on Amazon - (£93) Apple - (£119)

We already own one of these but it has had to have all the software added to use on an Apple and we have had to buy additional cable to connect it.This comes with software and cables included and is a must have for all of those out there who are Apple users. The most amazing thing with these is the size. Originally anything that added additional memory to a computer was enormous expensive and had its own power supply which you plugged into the mains. This is tiny, the size of a stuffed wallet. It comes with the additional leads enabling you to use this with a Apple computer and to be honest at this price is a steal. This is not only well made, competively priced especially in a world when any addition such as leads can save you a small fortune but its tiny, runs off your computer and is excellent value for money. If you are looking for portable memory at a good price which is well made you really dont have to look any further than this.

I note that another reviewer has said that it doesn't work on a PC - I have to disagree as I have a PC and after installing the driver from the Seagate website it worked perfectly and I have had no problems on either my work pc (windows 7) or home laptop (vista). I just followed the instructions included in the box and it was up and running within 5 minutes. I often have to share files with mac users as well and it works fine with macs as well!I am amazed at how small and light it is. I have a 250GB portable Toshiba hard drive that I bought a few years ago which now feels like a brick compared to this hard drive! This makes it ideal for people who need to transfer documents and data between home and work computers. With ~1TB of storage space there is plenty of room for videos, photographs and documents.I would highly recommend this product for someone who wants a nice, light and portable external hard drive.

The 1 TB hard disk comes in a good-looking brushed silver case, with a weighty feel in the palm of your hand which gives a comforting feel of quality. The main disk comes with 2 connectors, one for USB and one firewire so it should be compatible with practically any computer. It was recognised immediately by my Mac, but although windows loaded the device driver and it was registered as a USB device it did not appear in explorer. This could probably be fixed with a little effort. In all a very useful storage addition to your system. The best feature is that it's powered by the USB or firewire interface,so you don't have to lug around an adapter and find a power outlet to use it; slip it in your pocket and away you go.

This is a nice little backup drive...small and light...Works on firewire or USB2.I'm only just seeing new pcs coming in with USB3..and if you already have a mac...unlikley you will have these ports yet.It has flexibility to upgrade to superfast thunderbolt data tranfser rates. The packaging is a little confusing I fear....it seems really to be designed for mac...but it says PC and Mac. I see from other reviews, that others have had issues with this. So ..thus far....no problems. But I have found in my experience...unless you are just unlucky with a dodgy hard drive...or you drop them from a height..they are much of a muchness.Seagate are one of the brand leaders in HDD...so I wouldn't hesitatein recommending them.
