I'm a big fan of Samsung SSD drives and have bought several of them over the years. I think you do end up paying more for them than alternative brands but you do tend to get a quality product with decent performance, TBW rating and warranty.I was in the market for a larger USB drive that I could use between my PC and laptop to store large files and also a Steam downloads folder. There's a few options available at the moment but in the end it was between this Samsung T5 and the SanDisk Extreme. I read in a few places that the SanDisk gets very hot, even when not being heavily used and that always worries me with computer components as it will inevitably reduce the lifespan of the product andthat made my decision quite easy.The Samsung T5 is quite small (slightly smaller than a regular 2.5" drive) and has a matte aluminium casing. It has no method of attaching it to a key ring or clip and also requires a cable to connect it to your devices. You are provided with both USB 3 to USB Type-C and a USB Type-C to Type-C cables but it's something else you need to carry around with the drive if you want to take it around with you. It's a shame Samsung didn't supply a little pouch or carry case for this drive, especially considering the price point.Performance wise the drive is pretty good. It's not quite as fast as a directly connected SATA SSD but for a USB 3 device it's pretty quick, especially when compared to regular USB memory sticks however, in my (limited) testing it is not quite as quick as a Samsung EVO 860 connected via USB 3.It comes provided with drive encryption software for Windows which is really simple to use and seems to work OK. If you are not storing sensitive data on the drive or are permanently attaching it to your computer then you don't need to use the software at all.Overall I'm happy with the drive but you can make your own USB 3 2.5" SSD drive for much less money which will be physically slightly larger in size but more or less just as convenient as this Samsung T5.Pros:- Made by Samsung who make some of the best SSD drives- Small form factor SSD- Aluminium casing gives the product a premium feel- Plenty of capacity (2TB)- Doesn't run hot- Decent performance over USB 3Cons:- Expensive- No carry case or pouch provided- Can't be attached to a key ring or clip- Requires cables to be carried around with it

I purchased a SanDisk Extreme Portable to gift photos to a life long friend of mine. The SanDisk turned out NOT to have hardware encryption, only software.Having learnt my lesson a while ago after 'losing' an unencrypted USB key with personal financial information on holiday (which turned out wasn't lost but had been left plugged into my computer back at home) I now refuse to use any portable unencrypted media.Losing 500G of personal files was not an option! The SanDisk with software encryption was returned and this Samsung with hardware encryption was purchased.First of all, the Samsung SSD is beautifully made. I purchased the rose gold version which I know my friend would like as it looks fashionable,sleek and modern. The SSD looks as if it can easily be scratched so I recommend a protective case. I purchased the "XANAD Protective Case for Samsung T3 / T5" in which the drives slots perfectly. The case also holds the USB cables which is handy.The drive's performance is lighting fast over USB 3.0, no issues to report here.However, when you receive the drive, make sure you UPGRADE the firmware first! In researching secure drives, I read the original firmware on the device which I received in October 2019 had a major security flaw which Samsung subsequently patched. Samsung probably now ship the SSDs with the latest firmware, but don't risk it and update!Prior to updating my firmware, I thought I should test whether the update wipes the drive. So I encrypted the drive, transferred some files, and performed an upgrade. When re-mounting the drive, all my files were still there. Of course, always have a backup prior to performing any updates (in case you do need to wipe the drive should something stop working).All in all, highly recommend this SSD thanks to its inbuilt hardware encryption. I am impatiently waiting for Samsung to produce an 8TB version in the coming years so that I can back up my entire photo library of RAW files (encrypted of course)!

At first I was dubious about it's claimed read/write speeds. I wanted a fast drive for back-up purposes and usually used flash drives that would take hours to transfer 100-200GB of data. I transferred an array of files totaling 260GB in something like less than an hour. I didn't time it exactly but it definitely so much quicker than USB 2/3 transfer to flash drive or external HDD. It is also discretely small!. the Samsung T5 has a USB C port and I used the USB C port on my laptop for the data transfer - I haven't tried data transfer using the USB 3.0 port on my laptop so I dont know if this would affect the speed of data transfer.Up till now I was never happy with USB 3.0 data transfer speeds to USB 3.0 flash drives and several of these 3.0 flash drives have failed on me - often to overheating I suspect. So at the price of the Samsung T5 I am hoping for a reliable drive that won't overheat/fail and will remain extremely fast for data transfer!Update: this drive has been working without a flaw over the past 15 months and I am still very happy with it. I like the built-in password protected vault to keep documents safe in the event the drive was lost. It has come down a lot in price so it is now quite good value given its very small size and speed of data transfer. I use a Lenovo Thinkpad with PCI-NVMe ssd - not sure if this also contributes to the high speed of transfer via USB-C.

I have both the Sandisk Extreme Portable SSD and the Samsung T5 as I store a lot of backups of videos and photos of my holidays.I bought the Sandisk a while ago as it was the cheaper of the two and I was thoroughly impressed by its read write speeds. I could download whole collections of videos and photos in minutes and it was through and through all I needed. It was rugged and could withstand shocks with its rubber body along with dust and some water.When I needed more storage, i looked to the Samsung T5. I had seen quite a few reviews comparing the two and was always of the impression that they were comparable with no real difference. Whilst that is mostly true of its read write speed which I have found to be very similar,the Samsung T5 does power past in a couple of main ways.- The body of the T5 is much sleeker and akin to something that Apple has designed. If aesthetic is important to you - then the T5 will probably be what you want.- It has a smaller form factor - again aesthetically this is pleasing and easier to store than the Sandisk- It does not give off as much heat as the Sandisk which is important when transferring many files. I found the Sandisk to heat up after 5-10 minutes of transfer whilst the T5 stayed cool the whole time.Overall, if I were to purchase again, i would probably get two T5s rather than one of each!

This SSD is deceptively small, it came as a bit of a surprise. I'm glad now that I chose the gold colour version as it is easy to spot amongst my other black pc peripherals.My Acer Aspire V15 Nitro Black Edition comes with two drives, an SSD and a larger 1TB hard disk drive. I back up my images and music to an external SSD, but the volume now significantly exceeds the capacity of that 500gb drive to allow me to back-up to a single external drive, which is what I prefer. Checking Amazon's listings, I narrowed my choice to this unit on spec v. price, and that it has a USB-C connection.The drive is noticeably faster than my older 500gb drive and so my expectations have been met.The only slight issue was when first connecting via USB-C to the laptop when the laptop didn't automatically register the drive as connected. Somewhat perturbed by this I re-connected using the USB-3 port and the SSD was recognised immediately. Reverting to the USB-C port everything was now fine. Whilst transferring about 300gb of music files the SSD got a smidgen warmer, this is to say warm barely to the touch, so no heating issues whatsoever.So far, I'm very pleased with the capability of this SSD although it's too soon to comment on reliability. If I run into an abnormal problem, I'll post here.

Over the years I've purchased the Samsung T1, T3 and now the T5 drives for my ever-growing catalogue of raw audio and video files for editing.***Speeds***The T5 is the best out of all of the Samsung portable SSDs, as one would expect with it being the newer model. I've attached screenshots of the tests I ran with 'Blackmagicdesign Disk Speed Test' with a stress level of 3GB for each. All of the drives were plugged into a USB3 hub (so the T3 and T5 were not using their USB-C ports, which would potentially render even better results. When I get a chance, I may also run tests and update the review using the USB-C cable.1. The T1 managed 372.6 MB/s write speeds, and 420.4 MB/s read speeds.2.The T3 managed 373.9 MB/s write speeds, and 424.4 MB/s read speeds.3. The T5 managed 418.7 MB/s write speeds, and 421.9 MB/s read speeds.***Design and durability***The T1 is plastic, and as a result is potentially more likely to break. Mine has a chip in the casing where it's been bashed in the laptop bag at some point. I much prefer the design of the T3 and T5 models, which have a wraparound look from a seamless piece of metal. Weight-wise, they all feel about the same.I bought this 1TB T5 on an Amazon deal of the day offer for £189.99, which to my mind was an absolute steal.

Mac user with a Mac mini. I had an older thunderbolt external disk I was using for video edit and had a big issue with a 1080P file which had a bad codec format that slowed everything down to nearly 1 minute waits between edits in Final Cut Pro. I bought this to save me days of editing on this corrupt video file which had precious footage in it and it really helped me with 30gigs of bad video file. It did not stop the slower-than-normal editing in FCP, however it made the delay I was facing on blade cuts and edits more like 10seconds rather than a minute of timeouts whilst waiting on the older storage. I won't be using the particular codec which caused me the problem again,however the disk will continue to be used heavily for all video editing I do because the speed difference made a massive impact. Speed of rendering improved for upload to youtube so an all round positive experience and I am using it with the included USBC direct to Mac mini USBC port. I was surprised how small it was at around credit card size.The included software did not work on the latest version of mac OS and even the download update option was reported as not compatible. So big minus points in regard to the software included and I just run it natively on the mac with no additional software.

My wife's Late 2012 21.5" iMac has caused much frustration the last few years as it has become slower with each succeeding operating system update. Apple Mail and Safari, which are pretty much the only function she uses, have been so slow of late that I wanted to try adding an external SSD.Looking at what was available, along with comments from those who had successfully used them, I ordered a 1TB Samsung.It is installed and in place now, and, unprompted, my wife has commented on how much faster and more usable her iMac is.So it works well, and at a fraction of the cost of replacing the computer.I followed the recommendations of those who had commented on the way to install it,and the instructions on the drive format to use didn't work for me.As soon as I followed the standard Apple route, using APFS with GUID partitioning, it simply worked.Having cloned the system on to the SSD (taking 1hr 20min), it started up fine, so I immediately updated macOS to Catalina, with no problems.The iMac is usable again now, whereas the slow speed previously had meant that an iPad was being used in preference.Definitely recommended as a cost-effective upgrade.

I brought this for my Nivida Shield Pro 2019 model so I could mount it as storage instead of using my Shield internal storage. I'm very pleased with it. It is a very quick SSD much quicker than a HDD. It's very small in size and you can put it in your pocket it's that small. It's very quiet as well as I've mounted it as internal storage I leave it on 24/7 even when my Shield Pro is asleep. I read it's better to leave the USB power port on the Shield if you are using it as internal storage. I'm very pleased with performance and I believe Samsung is a name you can trust. I've stuck four 3mm rubber feet underneath it just so the air can get around the SSD. I don't know if it will make a difference tho but it won't hurt.I'm pleased I got my SSD drive when I did as they have now gone up a bit in price.UpdateI'm so pleased with with my first Samsung T5 SSD I just brought another one for my Nivida Shield but this one isn't set as internal storage so I can unplug this and use it on my laptop and even my Samsung S10+ Mobile to move files between devices. This one is Blue and my original one is Red so I can tell them apart.

I wanted a faster device for taking backups of my new Huawei MateBook.This device is amazingly compact and very sturdy. It comes with 2 data cables so you can connect it to either a USB C or USB A socket. On arrival, I copied off the utility software that is preloaded on the SSD to a secure location. As I use the device solely under Windows, I then reformatted it in NTFS (it arrives formatted in exFAT for compatibility with other devices). I than ran the utility but as I don't use the password feature, it is of little use to me other than to check for possible firmware upgrades.I checked the SSD performance when connected via a docking station using CrystalDiskMark (see photo)and everything is as advertised. I use Paragon Hard Disk Manager 17 for backups. Using an old HDD, these took 23+ minutes. With the Samsung T5 they complete in less than 5 minutes! That's brilliant.I also purchased a dedicated carry case to protect my investment.So, if you don't need the extra speed of the new Samsung T7 SSDs, this is a very reasonably priced device that performs really well. I am very chuffed...

I've tried lots of ways to cheaply back up photos on the move. I've found a couple of solutions that work, but are messy and take forever. Until today.I connected the Toshiba T5 Portable SSD 500GB to an Anker data hub, into which was plugged an SD card via adapter, which was all connected to an Android tablet (Samsung S3). I managed to copy 1,500 photos incl some RAW files from my SD card to the Toshiba SSD in less than 1 minute.It doesn't need a power supply, it works from the tablet supply and it is super fast and super easy.I had previously tried to do this using a portable HDD but it wouldn't have it.I was considering a WD My Passport which costs £265 for 500GB but this is much cheaper.It works the same using my Android phone.It is a neat little unit,it is robust (although I have still ordered a silicone cover to help it bounce) and it comes with two substantial but shortish (perfect) cables to connect USB C-C or A-C. You can also get the micro USB version if you prefer.I have been searching for something to do this task for 3 years. This is perfect and I am delighted.

If you are having problems with the performance of your drive, check these things:1) CABLE. You MUST use a *Gen 2* cable to get the highest performance from your drive. I got 40 MB/s with a Gen 1 cable and 320 MB/s using a Gen 2 cable. The drive will be connected at lower speeds with inferior cables.2) USB PORT. Not all USB ports on your computer/laptop are the same as they can be connected to different controllers in the computer, try different ports. Also, the USB-C port is not always faster than the USB-A port, even though the port format is newer.3 POWER SETTINGS (Laptops). Some laptops cannot perform at full speed, including the USB performance, unless you change the operating system power settings (e.g.in Windows). In Win 10 go to Power Options and use High Performance. On newer Dell laptops, you will not have a High Performance profile, such as XPS devices. You will need to install the Dell Power Manager app and use the power profiles in that app. Set your laptop to high performance and then re-test copy data to/from the drive.Hope this helps.

I love this device. I have a Dell laptop with a 256Gb SSD drive. My problem is that in my line of work, I can end up creating huge files and because I work for so many people, I keep lots of their info on my laptop as well, so 256Gb actually doesn't last that long. I also go to places where connectivity can be an issue, so I have learnt from experience that storing on the cloud is not always a great idea, hence I bought this.It's permanently plugged into the 3.0 USB slot and I've used a Command strip to stick it to the lid of my laptop. Sounds strange, works brilliantly!!The drive is security enabled, very fast, has a huge 2Tb and means I can carry everything with me.I've moved all my files from the cloud and now use it as a backup only. The drive was simple to install and behaves just like any other drive. I think it was good value for money for its size and is highly recommended. There were others, but the flat small shape of this (smaller than a credit card, although 4 times as thick) made sticking it to the lid of my laptop convenient.

You can now fit a Terabyte in your pocket. Utter madness. This drive was much smaller than I expected it to be when it arrived. I used this drive for running MacOS straight off the drive and I can say I was pleasantly surprised at the performance. At no point was I cussing at the drive for being slow or unresponsive. This was even using FileVault without the new T2 security chip so the AES encryption was being done on-the-fly by the CPU and still no noticeable performance penalties.One thing to note is do not trust the OEM password protection/encryption. A bit of Googling will show you that the encryption is completely ineffective at protecting your data which I find to be a bit of a stab inthe back from Samsung when you read into the security issues around this they clearly did not have users privacy in mind when designing this. You can and should use your own encryption with this drive. Something like FileVault (for MacOS) or Bitlocker (for Windows). Other than that, it's a quality drive with good performance.

It's very compact and lightweight. It's 74 x 57 mm with 10mm depth.Inside the box, there are two cables: one usb-c to usb-c and another one usb-c to usb-a (useful to connect the HD to your laptop if you don't have usb-c ports). Both cables have a tie strap to keep them "together".The HD is preformatted and in the root directory there is the software Windows/Mac to install the Samsung SSD app. An Android version is also available and the link is provided in a text file inside the HD. I haven't used to be honest with you.I have bought this HD to have a host my movies, picture and see them on my android box/Nvidia Shield.I'm planning to bring this with me when I'm travelling to have always my stuff with me: it's so light and compact that I'm not going to feel it in my pockets.I'm very happy with this little HD and there was a little discount when I bought it (some colours variant are cheaper than others too). It's practical, lightweight, compact, highly portable for every use.Highly recommended.
