Pens must, surely, have as dependable and stable a market as any basic commodity. I can also understand that new models have to be brought out at intervals, because the competition always will if you don't. However these days there is no status in pens any more. Very upscale users can be viewed clasping, without the slightest self-consciousness, the cheapest ballpoints. or the free handouts come to that. It just seems to be a matter of running to stay in the same place for the ballpoint tycoons. However the makers of these new pens promise 'the ultimate writing experience' whatever that is. I have been using their new pen for a few days now, and I have had to conclude that I would not know an ultimate writing experience, perhaps because, in this era of typing and texting, I, like most others, hardly ever write any more. I find nothing to criticise in any aspect of this pen, whether ergonomically or in use. It is a Pentel production, so I like to think that the best quality can be simply assumed. That left me nothing else to do by way of preparing a review and assessment than to check whether others were finding virtues that I should not have missed. Again I drew a blank. Did they, for instance, speak of little else in my local cafes than the liquid gel that the manufacturers seem so proud of? Well, no. It probably is an advance in pen-technology, but as soon as this pen has swollen the rout of ballpoints wearing their honours out in my own large collection I shall have forgotten all about liquid gel.I had better say again that I have no criticism of this new pen, but it is very rarely that I find anything to criticise in any pen -- for instance, my pens hardly ever leak or smudge, so I can't really praise any particular specimen for being guiltless in that regard. By any ordinary standards I would have awarded 5 stars here, but the awkward fact remains that the price being asked for it at the moment is more than I would have been prepared to pay. These Energel Plus rollerball pens from Pentel are well designed and nicely made and are perfect for many daily writing purposes at home, school or office, but they are also great for just having fun doodling with. The 0.7mm roller-ball gives a medium line width of approximately 0.35mm and although the low viscosity gel ink takes only a few moments to dry just take a little care not to smudge it when wet - but once dry the ink seems to be quite waterproof. The gel ink flows very smoothly and the soft rubber finger grip makes these pens comfortable and pleasant to use, and they feature a metal pocket clip on the cap to keep the pens secure in a top pocket. This pack of twelve pens is currently a little under twenty-four pounds from Amazon making each pen around two pounds apiece – which is nearly twice the price of the better-value blue ones. These pens are still made by Pentel in Japan where they have been making art materials since 1946 when they started life as The Japan Stationery Co. As well as these red pens this Pentel BL27 model is also available in better-value twelve-packs of black or blue versions to meet all of your writing needs.

Over the years I’ve been lucky enough to own several fairly exotic pens, both fountain and roller ball, but not one of them has written better than a Pentel Energel roller pen. The pen itself is lighter than a traditional fountain pen, but it's nicely balanced and the nib has exactly the right amount of drag to allow you to control your writing easily and avoid the tip slithering across a smooth sheet of paper. And there are no blots, no blobs, no leaky nibs, and no scratchy dry ones either.Nib width is very much a matter of purpose and personal preference. Personally, I find the 0.7mm point (with BLACK ink) ideal for both everyday use and the occasional letter. Crossword enthusiasts might prefer the thinner 0.5mm point, which allows you to write finer, smaller letters, but which (IMHO) isn’t quite so good at writing long letters.

There’s a nice free flow to the bright (but not garishly bright) red ink. There’s a nice grip area above the nib for handling it.It’s a pleasure to write with. I’ve no complaints. I’m incapable of waxing poetically any further over what is basically a pen with a bit more frictionless flow to the ink than you would get with cheaper options. My 5 out of 5 review doesn’t take into account the price. I’ll leave that up to you if you consider the pens to be worth the high price.NOTE 21/8/17: Very, very roughly I believe I have used one of these red pens to write about 20,000 words before it ran out of ink.

These are excellent pens for writing. They are totally smooth as they slide on the paper with none of the scratchiness of most nylon tips. They don't require are much pressure as a ball pen and yet don't slide so fast that you lose control. I find them very pleasant to write with. The line has no blotches and no uneven edges. They are made from light plastic and don't look particularly stylish but are comfortable enough to hold, with slight striations to give grip where you hold them.

I've used the black ink version of these Pentel pens for some time, and they are very high quality pens. These ones have a strong red ink, and a nib size of 0.7mm, which I find perfect for most uses. They are very comfortable to hold; lightweight and with a rubber surround for holding the pen without it slipping. The ink flows beautifully, there's no drag, no leaking and no smudges, and a great selling point is that these pens are made with 71% recycled materials. Top quality pens.

This set of 12 fine tipped pens is boxed for easy storage. Individual pens are comfortable to hold and look very elegant with an interesting design on the end of the cap that makes them stand out against myriad others. The ink flows freely and the pen writes smoothly across the page without missing any character strokes. The cap clicks securely back in place so minimising any risk of the pen running dry prematurely or of leakage in bags or pockets.

Excellent pens - writing with these is a real pleasure and there is no smudging or blotting. The ink dries very quickly - this is really good as this does not happen with all gel pens. The barrel is just the right size for me and I like the clip on the lid which means I can fix it to a note book or similar. As the ink is red I am sure these will be very popular with teachers.

These are lovely pens to use. Smooth flowing, fast, accurate. The medium nib is great for most purposes. If red is the colour you need these will be great.

These are brilliant for teachers; long lasting, cheap and write brilliantly!
