My perception of the Parker brand has varied hugely since I used them at school in the 1970's. OK so I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth, but when I was at school they seemed fairly commonplace albeit a lot nicer than cheaper brands. In time I became aware that in the expensive pen counter at WHSmiths they fitted into a kind of hierarchy of pens, some a lot more expensive. Then a few years ago I learned about the Parker Duofold which has a rich heritage, at which point my perception fo the Parker brand changed again. Now I look at their Wikipedia page I learn that the company has changed hands several times. They seem to have lost traction in the USA where they've closed down their manufacturing plant, and in 2011 they closed their UK manufacturing plant. Now they make everything in France. The parent company that owns Parker also owns Rotring, Sharpie, Papermate and Waterman.So... the Sonnet ballpoint pen which I have in lacquer blue, which looks to me like a kind of matt metallic finish that is dark blue mixed with a bit of grey. This is a slimline pen and I find it's too small to comfortably use in my hands. Without being sexist, I think this pen is aimed at ladies. The trim on the pen is palladium, which is a rare and expensive metal in the same group of the periodic table as platinum. It is supposedly very unreactive with human skin so you are very unlikely to suffer an allergic reaction to the small pieces of exposed metal such as the cone-shaped bit near the nib, the band around the middle saying Parker, and the archetypal Parker clip. The mechanism is a work of minimalist simplicity. The pen is divided in two halves, and you twist one end to make the nib come out and go back inside. Overall the pen is little wider than the Quinkflow ballpoint refill contained within, and taking it in and out is easily achieved by unscrewing the pen. Quinkflow refills are only £2.80 so virtually all the money you're spending on this pen is invested in the mechanism and the barrel. And the attractive but rather over-sized fabric covered cardboard box.My main comment about this pen is that basically it's a biro. It's attractive, but not a fountain pen. Obviously there are different customers for different types of pen, and there are many people out there who want a luxurious biro, but I don't really think this pen is worth as much as is being charged.

This is a nice pen but it does have some issues. The positives are its a beautiful almost royal blue colour, the pen is a lovely deep blue and its also a nice size and feel to it. I would not really describe it as a feminine pen its not that slender but could be used equally by a man or a woman. The trim is also very nice and all in all at first glance it does show its class. The Parker engraving all in all makes it look special. The pen comes with a black ink which I like much more than some which come with blue ink.Now for some of the issues I have with the pen. First of all I found the writing not too great,I have a cross ball pen and it is a lot smoother to write with in particular I feel the ink flows a lot better my first impression was the ink flow was a little weak. The other issue I have is the pen unscrews at the cap rather than the base, no real issue with that but when twisting the pen to close you can accidentally start twisting the pen open so it doesn't feel so secure. Again, this was something I was quite supprised with from Parker in comparison to my Cross which was much better I have had for years without this problem. The box it comes in is rather generic it would seem for all Parker pens in this range which at this price is not a problem but I feel could be an issue if you are buying a more expensive pen in the range and have the same packaging across the price range. For example, Platinum sell their more expensive pens in a wooden box lesser ones in a nice but card box. Its just that little extra touch.I have found writing with this pen quite nice and its very light and comfortable especially for long writing so especially good for note taking for say a student and the size makes it great for the pocket. The negative with its writing is the flow of the pen doesn't seem as clear as other ball pens I have used and the ease of opening the pen when closing is a concern but otherwise a nice pen.

This parker Sonnet is a beautifully crafted pen; elegantly designed, perfectly weighted and balanced, the slimline black lacquer model looks very classy with its gold trim finish. I would like it much better however if it wrote as well for me as it looks. Some pens just follow the movements of your hand perfectly to allow your handwriting to flow smoothly. While everything feels like it should give those results, personally, I didn't find that the Parker brought out the best of my handwriting, but allowed it to slide into a scrawl. I would say however that this is more of a personal thing, and I'm sure the pen fits into the hand and glides better for others.I also had a few niggling issues with the design. One is the twist mechanism to control the retraction. It's smooth and slots into place with a soft spring, but it's easy to over twist when closing the retraction and start loosening the pen as if you were changing the refill. Again, careful use will prevent this, so it's a matter of getting used to it. The pen also won't write well if you hold it at too much of an angle. You need to hold the pen fairly upright, otherwise the ballpoint nib will scratch the paper. Perhaps this accounts for my own personal issues with the flow of the writing and maybe it can be remedied with a different refill. The Parker Sonnet is undoubtedly expensive, but it's a one-off lifetime purchase for the actual pen. Standard Parker refills will fit it, so there's no reason why a pen as exquisitely made as this won't last, as long as you don't lose it, which let's face it, often happens with pens. If you're paying for a good pen however, you might be a little more careful where you put it down.

It has a normal Parker refill, writes as well as a plastic biro and is decadently expensive. So why buy it?Easy to answer, in an age were most people bash out an email on a keyboard or smear finger prints on a touch screen, picking up a piece of paper and writing by hand is simply sublime. It is personal and pleasurable, not only in the writing but also in the receiving of a letter that someone has taken time over.Writing with a finely crafted and beautifully designed pen not only increases the pleasure of writing but enhances the experience. Giving a pen like this as a gift to someone you know will appreciate it is even better.I spent many years in my teens, twenties and thirties writing letters to family and friends, usually with a fountain pen, sometimes with a biro but always with a Parker pen. It was the way of communicating from the four corners of the world, something that is not as apparent in the modern age when the most we get through the letter box are bills. Now years later I have found a number of letters I wrote and letters I received from people that are no longer here. It's not just a history lesson, instead the writing has meaning, is personal to me, more tangible, holding the paper that a loved one held and memories of a time gone by.I intend to write more letters to my children for this very reason. Just as I was given my dads Parker fountain pen many years ago, knowing that this will be passed down to my son or daughter and they may well be using it years from now makes me smile.

This is a beautiful elegant pen. It writes smoothly and has a very fine point so smaller fine script is very easy. This is good looking and elegant, with the traditional chisel pattern, making it a design classic. This is a silver pen with gold plated trim. It definitely looks expensive, and it's actually a joy to use. You just twist the top to retract it and its mechanism is very smooth working. Inside is a Quinkflow refill and I shall have to check how much this will cost to replace. This comes in a gift box made of card which in my opinion probably won't last that long, but at this price I think this is a pen you should make an effort to use everyday and not just keep it in a case.My worry would be keeping hold of it and not losing it.It's a shame that beautiful pens like this don't come with a little velvet type of slip in case. Just something to slot the pen in to protect it from scratches while in your handbag or briefcase. This pen with its slim elegant looks I would say is one for the ladies. I would be very happy to receive a gift like this. It's quality item that you would expect from Parker, and part of the joy of using this is definitely the snob value of owning such an elegant exquisite expensive item.

Parker sadly had a reputation of being the make of pen that your grandparents got you for Christmas. It's blighted with the reputation of being a bit safe, a bit boring. The pen that you opened your first bank account with, the pen that you had when you went on work experience. So, how surprised was I to see that Parker had decided to go toe to toe with some proper pen makers - Cross, Mont Blanc to try and refresh it's previous safe image. To be truthful it looks more modern and it writes well (even for a left hander) and you can start to imagine it more as a pen that you signed your soul to the devil or signing a petition against the current Health secretary.Overall it's the kind of pen you would be happy to have when you start taking off your work uniform at night - a classic watch, a modern smartphone, a pristine tie clip and your weapon of choice - your pen. I like it, it seems to have a whiff of rebellion and being grown up about it...

This is a beautiful pen from Parker. Slim and elegant, the top half has a brushed silver chevron effect and the bottom half has what i would describe as a white enamel finish. You twist the top left to right to lower the nib, the pen sits comfortably in the hand. writing is easy and fluid and there can be no doubt that this is a high quality pen. It looks stylish, it feels nice to hold and writes beautifully. The pen looks and feels expensive and will last for generations, gift this to somebody and they will own it for life. Finally the presentation box is also impressive, ideal if you want to give the "Sonnet" as a present to some lucky individual.High class, high quality, stylish and very impressive.

The first thing you notice about this pen is how slim it is. It's thinner than most pens, but not in a bad way. It simply looks very elegant and refined, which is what you'd expect at this price level. The dark blue colour is very pleasing and is offset nicely by the silvery colour of the clip and trim. The nib is opened and retracted by turning the upper part of the pen and it writes smoothly, with a choice of black, blue or red inks. The pen comes well presented in a nice gift box, rightly suggesting a quality product, which is exactly what you're getting here. This would be ideal as a treat for yourself or a long-lasting gift to someone special.

Superb pen! This pen looks really lovely & is a joy to use.The colour is a lovely red & the finish is very smart.I normally use Parker jotter pens, I have several in various handbags and on my desk. The cheap free pens you get with surveys and such, I throw away. This pen has a twist action to release the point (my jotters have a click action)The pen is slimmer than the jotters - I would consider this to be a "Ladies" pen or for someone with slim hands. This would make a lovely present for a special occasion - the price makes it that sort of a pen!I will have to use my little leather etui (posh word for a small pencil case) to protect it.

I love this pen!! It oozes style and class and writes smooth and consistently with no skipping or breaking. It is a twist retractable with gold trim and black ink.The pen comes beautifully gift boxed and would make an amazing gift for anyone, especially a corporate gift or for those who love writing. Parker is known for enhancing the writing experience and this pen is no exception! It would be a last a lifetime gift to be treasured by those you know would appreciate such an item. It is elegant and the chiselled design is gorgeous. Well worth the price if you want quality and a long lasting smooth writing pen.

You can tell the quality of this slim, red and gold pen as you open the box, perhaps over big, see the slip about the sonnet range and then lift the ribbon to release the pen. It is a quick twist for the pen nib to appear and then off you go. The sonnet tag tips the nod at the idea of the pen being poetry in motion and the smooth script that appears is definitely lacking the blotches that can appear with cheaper brio pens. The red is slightly matt and the gold trim adds a little glamour. A stylish pen that is lightweight and attractive.

Beautiful pen, writes very smoothly. An elegant design and aesthetically engraved line. Good weight, very feminine pen. Brushed silver contrasts well against the engraved line. I have been looking at other high end pens for over a year before this purchase. Sits well against the fingers. I have used parker's for 40+years and am not disappointed. Excellent value for money compared to other pens.
