Is it a road toy or is it a jigsaw? The real value of this Giant Road lies in the way it extends the value of any collection of toy vehicles. Children can put the 20 large pieces together to design a wide range of different road layouts; they fit together in lots of different ways, with corners, junctions and straight roads. Add to the fun with your own favourite toy cars. To extend the play value of the set, you can link it with the Orchard Toys Giant Railway jigsaw and the Giant Town Jigsaw; more are available at Orchard Toys The pieces fit together snugly - I wondered how well they would stay together on carpet, but they keep together well, giving a smooth surface for toy vehicles to travel over. The Giant Road offers lots of educational value - it promotes imaginative play and encourages observational skills. It gives plenty of opportunity for children to play together, as the generous size means there's lots of room for everyone; as children play, their conversational skills will grow. This set offers so much to talk about - there are lots of bright pictures showing all manner of things that will be encountered along the road, so make good use of this by encouraging your child to talk about them - and then look out for them while you are out and about, encouraging observation even more. Doing jigsaws helps develop hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness; it's a good challenge for children to use up all the pieces as they design their road. This is a super way to make playing with toy vehicles even more fun, and the different layouts add to the value; it;s really well produced, with shiny pictures on sturdy card. A fantastic toy/jigsaw that will give many, many hours of happy play.

Chosen for two year old grandsons upwards I first tried the layout in simple fashion on our big table. See the pic below.I was very impressed with the careful design of the chunky pieces, they all fit together and make sense, whatever combination you choose, although maybe there wouldn't be two red pillar boxes on the same road... If you leave out one piece you can rearrange the roads into a complete loop.As it is to be a game to be played with several little ones, I bought a pack of more toy vehicles to travel along the busy roads. Luckily this set also links up with Orchard Toys jig saw play mats; the On the Farm and Giant Town ones, so the whole floor could become a play scape. Not very likely though, unless you own a ballroom.Very strong and wipe-able, the pieces should last well, even with the likely contact with dust, when laid onto the floor. Once again Orchard Toys have provided a robust box, carrying case, for the jig saw, so it can be stored and carried tidily. This set lets the imagination roam free, the jolly colourful characters illustrated along the way will start the children off. Little subtle lessons on the Highway Code, crossing the road safely, can be subliminally incorporated.

I think this is great. I bought it for my 6 year old son who loves his car tracks and playmats. We opened it yesterday and tried 2 of the 5 layouts it shows you on the box. My 6 and 2 year old boys and 8 year old daughter all enjoyed building the road and playing with it. It is the perfect size for hot wheels cars and you can fit two either side of the road, just like a real road. Obviously it's good for various ages and both genders. It's not too big either if you have limited space. It fits in our living room and my boys bedroom with plenty of space spare. I am really happy with this purchase and I can't fault it. It also comes in a strong box with a carry handle for easy storage.I'm sure there are lots of layouts possible which is good for a child's imagination. I like that you can buy other packs too including a train track one, and make a bigger layout of you wish and have the space. Overall it's a good toy and I would recommend it. There is also pictures of cars, zebra crossings, traffic lights, people and an ice cream stall. You can make a roundabout on it too which my son also loves.

This is a really lovely road playset, with really large pieces, which are sturdy, but not too heavy or cumbersome. This has the appeal of a jigsaw, but without the rigidity of having to put exactly the right piece in the right place - indeed part of the joy of this set is its ability to be used in different orders and patterns - however your little one feels like designing it.The size of the pieces, means that standard toy cars work well on this, but also slightly larger, toddler sized cars will happily trundle down the streets. The pieces are well made with a nice glossy finish. The streets have lots of different characters, walking, cycling, driving and skateboarding. There are people buying ice-creams,sweeping the streets and all sorts of other things. If I could make any improvement it would be a more secure "click" between the pieces, so that they are more stable whilst being played with, but this is a minor niggle and the kids didn't seem to mind. It is certainly more personal than a vinyl-coated street scene, which is what we used before.

Its called a puzzle but in reality my grandchildren use it as a road layout for their cars. In fact when my wife bought this it never occurred to me or my twin grandchildren that its a puzzle at all.Basically, I helped the little people in my life make up a cool roadway for them to drive their monster trucks around whilst ferrying dinosaurs. Seems entirely reasonable to me...Anyway, whilst it may be a stretch to call this a 'puzzle,' as all the bits lock together no matter which order to place them, there are multiple options to create different roads for the aforesaid dino carrying trucks.Made of fairly resilient thick cardboard and the finish is nice and shiny with lots of colour involved.Works best on a hard surface as a carpet allows the passing of fully loaded toy cars and lorries to disengage the sections.Overall, a nice toy for children to create different roadways with for use with cars, lorries, dinosaurs and imaginations.

The box says this is for three years and upwards, but our two-year-old grandson liked playing with this as much as his four-year-old sister, and actually got the hang of how to fit the pieces together quicker.I really can't fault this. You can put the pieces together however you like, so it is a different layout every time. The brightly coloured characters and details help to inspire the kids to make up stories so it is great for unstructured play which encourages imagination. The box is sturdy and big enough that when you pack it all away there is space to put a couple of Hot Wheels-type cars in the box with the road pieces. The company also makes a farm and town layout that you can connect the road pieces to,but although they do not suggest it themselves, you could also get a second road jigsaw and be able to make even bigger road systems. Or even more if you have a massive room to play with it in.

This is a great idea, it's a giant hardboard puzzle with detailed printed artwork and a hard wearing glossy surface. The puzzle makes up into any number of configurations, and best of all, it packs away into a really small space because they are flat puzzle pieces, not chunky plastic. The artwork is really lovely, and very detailed, there are lots of characters walking on the pavements, and plenty of traffic lights, zebra crossings etc so your child can really let their imagination go wild when playing with this. You need to use your existing cars, but every child has dozens of those already, and personally I'd probably embellish the puzzle with other toys round the edge, such as trees, furniture and buildings from the Sylvanians Families sets that I already have, so in essence, you could easily build a whole town using this giant road set.Excellent. 5 stars.

Benjamin [2] has a floor mat with roads in his bedroom - which is fine, but stays the same all the time. This set of large chunky jig-saw pieces lets him (with a "little" help from Grandpa) make all sorts of roads.I suspect that in a year or so, assuming the set survives his enthusiasm, he will be able to make his own roads. This pieces are a good size for all sorts of sizes of car (plus Benjamin's wide range of tractors, lorries, diggers and trucks)I note that there are other sets from this manufacturer which link to these roads (including a town) so I have a cunning plan for his next birthday! In summary - great idea, well made, tough enough to survive small boy enthusiasm, plenty of scope for different layouts.

Great fun and a clever design concept. I like the fact that all the pieces are interchangeable so a child not so great at puzzles could get a lot of satisfaction from it. Fun to have the different road configurations, different order of pieces gives different story telling options.I like the fact it doubles as a road for toy cars etc, pieces I thought, plenty sturdy enough, and ok on carpet but would be even more stable hard floor. Illustration style is nice, my only criticism is they could have worked harder on the gender stereotyping, it is certainly not awful but it could be better. Price was excellent when I bought it at £5.99,I would still be happy at a tenner but I think £15 is a bit steep.

My girls love jigsaws and they love cars, so this is a winning combination. We have a rather large roll out car mat and this puzzle has been used together with it, like the girls are linking two towns together. The pieces are large and they can be put together any way you like. In that way it doesn't work as a brain blasting puzzle, but it does allow creativity and imaginative play. The strangest thing is how busy each piece is, with a variety of pedestrians, vehicles, signposts and other interesting points. It's almost too chaotic and cluttered but the kids don't care about this. Our hot wheels tear through the streets, park, and talk to all the people on the puzzle who we've given names to.

Like all Orchard toys this jigsaw puzzle road is sturdy, colourful and made to last. With 20 pieces each approximately 20 x18 cm in size, you can make a good road system with the straight and curved pieces. Our grandson at 4 loved being able to vary the layout, run the road between chair legs or around his garage. There is plenty to talk about as you move your toy cars around, passing other vehicles printed on the pieces and a wide range of pedestrians, road furniture - lots going on. You can add toy houses, play people or blocks to extend the play. The perfect size car for the road width is about 10 x 4 cm but bigger and smaller vehicles work OK. Great play potential from about 3 years up.

I bought this for my four year old while he had to be off nursery with chicken pox and he loves it. We did the first one together from the larger picture on the box but it took him no time at all to start creating his own layouts. He's been busy as anything designing and redesigning ever since. I'm going to get another couple so that he can make them bigger and more complex. I wish I'd come across this sooner, as he's been mad about his train set for years and this has the same building and engineering focus. I would recommend this to anyone with a child who likes to build and play with wheeled things.

This is a great toy to have in your collection. Our comes in a handy, sturdy case for storage, complete with a plastic carry handle. The jigsaw pieces themselves are well made and chunky, and the illustrations are bright and varied with lots of different people, vehicles, post boxes etc on them. Kids can play firstly by putting the puzzle together and secondly by moving vehicles around on the puzzle once it's completed. It's large enough for more than one child to play at the same time, and it's much less painful to step on than plastic road tracks or wooden rails! Recommended.

This is a fun puzzle/car mat. My 2 year old loves puzzles and cars and this really gets his brums going. He likes to drive his cars around it and points at all the different pictures, telling us what they are, what colour, etc.The main downside is that the pieces are not quite thick enough to mesh nicely on carpet. On a solid surface, everything stays together; on the living room carpet it keeps coming apart as he plays with it. He doesn't mind and it is not a quality issue, but it does mean that parents are asked to "fix car puzzle" a little more than I'd like!

The recommeded age range is 3+, but you can defintely play with this with younger children - all of the pieces connect to all of the other pieces very easily, there's lots going on to look at and talk about in the realistic but fun illustration (Isaac said 'push!' looking at the pedestrian crossing. As the pieces are fully interchangables, you could also extend your road network by buying more than one set.Orchard Toys make fantastic cardboard games and puzzles - we have had loads over the years and they have always been excellent quality and value.
