*UPDATED* August 2019: Please read before buyingAfter the Android update to 9.0 Pie, the phone's performance has suffered dramatically. The problems started with the March 2019 update and have persisted up to now. From the forum replies, Nokia have been unwilling to admit there is any problem and persist with blaming hardware (battery, motherboard etc) for the problems, which are widespread.Current issues which have tarnished the phone's otherwise stellar performance:- battery life dramatically reduced - standby time now uses up to 20% overnight rather than 8%- phone inexplicably restarts itself up to 3x a day even while charging or on standby in your pocket- if battery life drops below 5% (unheard of before the update but commonplace now)all your stored fingerprint data disappears BUT you can't rescan them as the phone thinks they are still stored - hard reset requiredThe rest of the review still applies - if Nokia and Google can work out how to reverse the damage done by Pie.Ladies and gentlemen, the Nokia 8 is the lean, no-nonsense Android phone you've been looking for. More or less stock Android UI (therefore highly customisable), fast Snapdragon 835 processor, 4gb ram and 64gb capacity with SD upgrade.I'm genuinely baffled by the reviews describing slowness, stuttering or poor performance. Straight out of the box the phone was upgraded to Android 8.1 and loaded all my backed up apps and settings from my old HTC 10. It runs very fast and smooth with apps and screens opening and switching seamlessly. It's the most iPhone-like performer I've seen. Call quality is excellent (not much between phones these days) and signal strength has improved over the HTC 10.Most of the stock apps can be uninstalled or disabled if you don't want them. There's no bloatware at all. The gallery feature is unobtrusive and doesn't use the battery: even from a new install with sync on, it dropped only 8% of the battery overnight. The screen is really bright and pretty vibrant for an LCD. It offers full HD (2560x1440) and the cool, thin design of the phone makes it feel more compact than a 5.3" screen should. That said, the onboard speakers are really tinny although the headphones sound is okay (nowhere near the HTC 10). Again, I'm mystified by previous reviews as Bluetooth connectivity is almost instantaneous on my car, headphones and Anker speaker. Just to top things off, it has a 3.5mm jack for conventional headphones. The USB C offers fast charging, so this went from 25% out of the box to 84% in about 30 mins which is pretty impressive; 12 hours later it's still on 72% so this bodes well for battery life!Sorry for the very long review, but in short, if you like cool looks, bright HD screen, long battery life and fast, no-nonsense performance for an amazing price, this is the phone you've been looking for. If you want big-screen posing power, studio-quality camera, waterproofing and indifferent build quality, keep looking. An amazing phone for the money from a resurgent, trusted brand. I'm sold.

This review is for the NOKIA 8High quality. Great value.Build & Aesthetic:The phone feels premium. High quality materials and no bending creaking, or loose buttons.Generally looks stylish and modern - however the large top and modern bezels makes the phone look slightly dated against Galaxy S8, Pixel 2 and LG G6 (but has not bearing on the functionality of the phone). However, as with any valuable phone.. put a case on it. I know it adds weight and spoils the aesthetic, but it's better than having a broken screen.Camera:Too early to tell - I have taken a couple of test shots, which came out pretty nicely. Will edit review further when I have more to go on.Anecdotally, from many tech site reviews,I hear the camera is good to excellent. Perhaps a little short of the Galaxy S8 and Pixel 2 when taking low light shots, but more than good enough.Software:Pretty much stripped down to stock android and no bloatware (apart from an o2 priority app that was easily uninstalled).Very happy with it - and nothing I am looking to change so far. everything is fast and fluid.Setup was nice and easy, as it was able to back up from Google cloud to automatically reinstall all the apps I have on my previous phone and even use the same wallpaper... was very quick and very easy.Hardware:64GB storage (plus slot for memory card), 4GB RAM, Snapdragon 835 chipset.Does everything you need and does it quickly and well. There are some phones offering more RAM, but it is overkill.... the Nokia 8 should be more than adequate.Battery life:(Edited 30 Dec) So, after a few weeks of use now, I usually have about 50% battery left at the end of day... meaning I could probably squeak 2 full days between charges if I had to. I'm a fairly heavy user, so this is massively impressive.Value:I picked this up from amazon at £369... this is half the price of the Galaxy S8 and Pixel 2 and a chunk cheaper than the latest OnePlus phone.. and you are getting a phone of pretty much the same quality and capability. This makes the phone an absolute bargain. It's really hard to make a case for spending more on any of the other flagship phones out there. You can spend less on other phones, but there will be a compromise somewhere, usually on chipset, storage, camera or all 3.Notes:There is no notification LED. However, when phone is charging, or when you pick it up, the screen shows the clock, plus message notifications, missed calls and emails. You can double-tap to wake the screen - but you can't double-tap to sleep (you push the power button)... an odd omission and something I miss.A quick double-tap on the power button starts the camera app.... a great function for if you are quickly trying to catch a moment with the camera.

Purchased this directly from Amazion in the middle of October. It was on the August security patch out of the box and since then has been updated twice to the October patch. No other android phone I have owned has received updates this quickly. The Android Oreo (8.0) update is rumoured to be imminent too. If Nokia (HMD Global) keep this up they are going to win a lot of fans - most OEM's are not even close to rolling out Oreo updates yet. What about the hardware itself? The phone has an all aluminium frame on the back and sides with Gorilla glass 5 on the front which curves gently into the frame. The shape of the back tapers towards the edges making the device feel even thinner than it actually is (and it is thin). The twin 13MP back cameras sit in an elongated glass plate (along with a flash and Zeiss branding) that only slightly protrudes from the rear. Build quality is fantastic - the phone feels premium and solid with a pleasant heft (160g). You could argue that the design is slightly behind the curve with todays near totally bezeless marvels but i will settle for solid build and no accidental screen presses.Inside, the Nokia 8 is packing this years android top end chipset of choice, the Octo-core Snapdragon 835 with Adreno 540 and 4GB of RAM. This means performance is awesome aided by what is essentially stock android this phone can handle anything you can throw at it without stutter. There is a generous 64GB of storage with an SD card slot should you need more. The dual rear and single front camera (also 13MP) produce good to excellent results - not quite as good as the very best but not far off at all. 99% of all users will be more than happy with the results.Call quality and audio is great, the single bottom firing produces clear tones (if lacking in bass somewhat). Connectivity is great with the antenna array on this latching onto and keeping signal in areas when some of my other handsets have struggled. The 5.3" 1440x2560 lcd screen (554ppi density) cranks up to more than 700 nits peak brightness which is well above average and means you should be able to see the screen on the sunniest day. Colours are well balanced and natural. Despite the screen size and high density couple with the powerful chip the Nokia 8 manages some very respectable battery times. In balanced use i am getting 2 days out of a charge (i hit the plug at 15%) with over 6 hours total screen on time.Summing up, this is a great phone for the money - remember it is £100-150 cheaper than equivalent flagships. I would not hesitate to recommend this. Excellent work Nokia and welcome back!

Overall this is a great flagship phone, possibly a towards the budget end of the flagship spectrum, rather than the premium end. Main reasons for buying were cost, security updates, build quality and battery life. It ticks all those boxes. It is very quick, with no lag. Some reviews mention poor performance, but I am not convinced they were reviewing the '8'.Battery life is sitting at a little over 29 hours from full charge. This is with push email, wifi and android watch pairing switched on 24/7. Light use otherwise. Charging is fast, around 2 hours from 10% battery. Phone runs very cool, even after the migration of 100+ apps on initial set up and during charging. Previous phone (Nexus 6)used to heat up a lot when taking pictures (with HDR enabled). The camera(s) are good, but not amazing. The stock Nokia camera app is not a simple as the stock Google camera app, and the pictures are sometimes not as sharp. There are two fixes for this, one available now and one in the future. HMD (who make the phone) have said they are going to rework the camera app in the near future. My opinion is that the app wasn't optimised for the dual camera setup prior to release. The other option is to side load a reworked version of the Pixel camera app. It is much easier to snap pictures, especially in low light, the portrait effect works well, is generally stable and produces better pictures. Virtually no shutter lag, or from taking a picture to the next picture. Nexus 6 was sometimes a 10 sec wait. You need to be aware of the risks of loading apps from outside the Google Play Store. Your choice. Not normally a fan of cases for phones, but for this one I bought a gel case, because it is quite slippery. The positioning of the power and vol keys are slightly too high in my opinion. Finger print sensor is accurate enough to be generally usable. Not 100% accurate every time, but certainly good enough not to be annoying. Previously used to unlock with the android watch, but now use the home key.Awaiting the November security update and Oreo. £400 is a good price for this phone. Recent price drop may be because of a rumoured 'Nokia 9' model on the horizon.

Bought two of these phones and this is the second of the two reviews. You will see my experience with the two phones differ dramatically. For a phone that was released back in October 2017, this is highly spec'd with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory. Although not necessarily comparing like-for-like this phone (at the price I paid) was a saving of approximately £500 versus the brand new iPhone XR (4GB/64GB). Based on this, this phone is superb value. One of the big pluses for me is that the Nokia 8 comes with stock Android which was quickly updated after powering on to Android Oreo. Keeping my fingers crossed that soon it will be upgraded to Android Pie.This phone replaces my old LG G4 which got amazingly hot, something that this Nokia 8 has not done - keeping cool throughout the day. Also the battery on the Nokia lasts pretty much the whole day, the LG G4 only a few short hours. The phone runs fast and smooth with apps and screens opening and switching seamlessly. Many new phone manufacturers have removed the 3.5mm jack for conventional headphones, but not Nokia and this was one of the reasons I bought this phone.Thankfully this phone has not suffered the same problem of a dreadful speaker as the other phone, though not convinced it is the best on the market. Again the charging plug supplied did not fit, not a big deal for me as I have plenty. The phone received is the TA1012.I've noticed the price of this phone is slowly increasing, possibly as it is proving so popular. Still very good value for money.Disappointed that I had to return my first Nokia 8 but I am very pleased with this one and the price I paid for it. No complaints.Edit: 24/01/2019. Now had the phone for a couple of months and just noticed that Nokia have upgraded the stock Android from version 8 (Oreo) to version 9 (Pie). Full marks to Nokia for this so this means although purchased with Version 7 (Nougat) I now have the most up to date Android version. Very happy, so far this phone still deserves the 5 star rating, in my opinionAlso noticed that phone is about £60 more expensive now than when I bought it . . .

At time of writing, this is the Nokia flagship.TLDR: excellent build quality and responsiveness, fast updates for both security and Android OS. Bright hi res screen. Camera and camera app are sufficient but not at expected quality. A case is mandatory due to surface slippiness and materials. If I'd paid the launch full retail price, I'd be upset, as there's not enough in the package to justify. As it is, at circa 50% price, it's a fair price, but some might disagree when some of the cheap cheerful Chinese generics do almost as much for a lot less. What you do get is a very well made fast phone with plenty of storage, a very good screen, a good battery. You also get monthly security updates,OS 8.1 and the promise of os 9.0. Behind the scenes you also get the full range of sensors including GPS compass and barometer. The camera is promoted as something special, with two sensors (one colour, one monochrome). In practice, it's nothing special, and is weak in low light. Whether it's the hardware or software isn't clear, but if it was the latter, there has been more than enough time to improve things; they haven't. It's not bad, but it's not great and doesn't live up to Nokia's heritage. For comparison, my previous phone was Xperia xa1, with a camera module from 2014, and it has much better resolution and far better app and tools.Other niggles : the phone is very slippy, almost impossible to use one handed. It's a result of both the materials, and fact the sides taper to very thin edge. The buttons are well placed, but the tactile feel is both cheap, and they are too flush with the body, so it's hard to tell if you're pushing the right button.Nokia promise the pure Android experience, and they do deliver. Unfortunately the phone doesn't feel special enough; the one area they could excel at (photography and image editing) is distinctly underwhelming.

Update, September 2018This phone is still going strong and maintains its 5-star rating. It has got even better with an updated camera app (more responsive) and a fix to the SD card issue I had previously. The best phone I've used and I'd buy it again.Original review, April 2018My previous phones have been the Lumia 640 and the Sony Xperia XA1. I was tempted to go for the Nokia 8 due to the great reviews and excellent price point (I paid 300 notes). I am glad I did - it is a brilliant phone. The three top things I love about it are:1. Pure Android - no pointless additional Apps or Settings that just get in the way and confuse.2. The Speed - it is really quick and responsive to use - no delays in opening Apps like the Sony Xperia XA1.3.The Screen - it is a thing of beauty with pin sharp resolution and a great size, particularly with the Android 'back' and 'open apps' buttons permanently located on the lower bezel, which is a simple but brilliant feature. If I was to go on, I'd also praise:4. The build quality - which is great and feels lovely in the hand.5. The Battery Life - which is brilliant - I comfortably get 2 days use out of it.6. The Camera - which has been slated in the reviews but it works great and takes really good pictures so I don't see the issue for normal use. What is not so good:1. The aluminium case is not as grippy as I'd like - I haven't done it yet but it feels more likely to slip out of my hand than previous plastic phones.2. Every time I turn it on it gives a notification that I have an SD card installed - a minor annoyance to have to swipe it away everytime.I highly recommend the Nokia 8 - it is an outstanding phone that is selling for a very good price at the moment.

Have held off upgrading my Samsung Galaxy S5 until now, but after it's second replacement battery had started to diminish I thought the timing was about right.Very impressed with the Nokia 8. After powering it on and setting up my WiFi connection I was presented with a couple of updates which installed with no drama. The 'bare' Android GUI is much quicker and cleaner to use than my previous S5. After running a few benchmarks on both phones it appears that the Nokia 8 is approx 3 times more powerful than the S5 (which had served me very well). Current Antutu benchmark rankings show this as the 6th fastest device (beating the new S8)which is incredible for it's lower price.Actual usage confirms this...Battle Bay has barely any delays when loading between screens - the S5 sometimes took up to 10 seconds to do the same.Switching between Apps feels instantaneous, and I'm sure the 4GB of RAM is great help with this. Unlocking via the fingerprint sensor (front located) is very quick and accurate so I will probably start using this now. The S5 was seemed slow to read the print and you needed to keep the finger/thumb fairly straight. The short fingerprint learning process on the Nokia 8 seems to help with it's ability to read prints at varying angles and edges of the finger etc.I haven't really had a chance to test the battery life out properly yet, but things are looking very good so far.An Android 8 (Oreo) preview build is already available for this phone but I've not had the time to try that out yet, but it looks very encouraging that Nokia (HMD) seem to be on top of the latest software.Welcome back Nokia !

Been using this phone for around a week now and am hugely impressed, especially for the price paid which was and still is currently for the tempered blue £219.99!Build quality is fantastic, real solid feel but not too heavy or thick and fits really nicely into the hand. As mentioned elsewhere no bloatware and with that it's really snappy for pretty much everything. With this colour at least I also like the fact it doesn't attract fingerprints which is one of my pet hates.Camera is decent but won't blow expectations. Good light conditions give some really nice results but anything outside of that is just average, I'm fine with this but I won't be getting rid of my trusty old Nokia 808 Pureview just yet for holidays and special days out.I did read that Nokia might be bringing Pureview back so I'm very hopeful for the future.Support seems great, out of the box it updated to the latest Android and did a whole ton of updates. If I have only one dislike it's the loud speaker which is really terrible and I would say the worst I have come across out of any of my phones to date. It isn't the volume as it can go pretty loud, but it's so tinny sounding that it's a bit horrible watching youtube videos which I tend to do a fair bit of without using headphones. I can live with it though and it really says something that aside from that the decide feels every bit premium for such a low price. My wife has a Galaxy S9 and honestly it doesn't feel a world apart.I don't think you'll find a better phone in this price range, go for it!

Everythong is great about the phone except some minor problems that at least in my experience are nagging at first. Bluetooth is slow to start and might freeze and restart the phone a couple of times. It gets resolved by itself afterwards. Some people might experience microphone problems every now an then, especially if the cell signal is below average for either party taking part in the conversation. The back is easy to scratch or damage. A case and a screen protector is strongly recommended. Ghostshield works better for me. The one provided by DN Alive came off in 1.5 months of daily use on two phones that I have purchased previously.Otherwise it runs on pure android 8.1.0 Oreo with an upgrade to Android P when the final and stable RTM or GM (Gold Master) is released to the public. Superb sound and video quality. Some review websites point out that the photos taken with nokia 8 are not of the greatest quality but I haven't noticed any issues when it comes to picture quality. Maybe some people have higher expectations from a smartphone camera than I do. I bought two phones sometime at the end of 2017 and in february 2018 and they stll run as smooth and fast as they were when I took them out of the box. I ordered a third phone because I believe that it is worth every penny, especially if you can get it at a discounted price. I ordered a nokia 8 for 323 pounds. I am a heavy daily user, carrying a powerbank just to make sure that I never run out of juice.

So after years of Windows loyalty due mainly to the super stable OS (don't really care about apps), and superb, durable hardware, Microsoft gave windows phone the chop. This left a void of quality, stylish phones which dare to be a little different from the usual suspects. Well, i can report with a positive tone, this is a great Nokia phone. Build quality is outstanding, (there is a video on YouTube regarding the design and build process) the hardware really is flawless. A whopping 64GB of ROM for ample storage and enough RAM to keep all your apps open without slowdown or crashing. This phone was a gamble to be honest, my Lumia 930 had become tired, cosmetically mostly, but was due for replacement anyway.Market choices are a symmetry of korean brands, a sterile over hyped chinese built designer brand, and a couple of odd ball brands out there of little heritage. AS my phone is used constantly throughout the day, durability and flexibility were paramount. Android runs as fluidly as you might ever want, no bloatware at all, i dare say pretty much a stock Android install, which is brilliantly deployed. The music player performance is decent (not on a par with my HiRes Sony Walkman though, and the cameras seem decent enough for a phone. Remember , this is not a professional grade camera. Time will tell if it can match up to my Lumia 1020, Lumia 1520 of past, but to be honest, so what if it doesn't? I have a Nikon D800 for taking pictures right!

I mostly loved this phone, but the Oreo 8 update messed things up so it had to go back.....:(It feels like a £800 phone - not the £400 I paid for it. Seriously quality feel in your hand. I particularly like the feel of the buttons - incredible premium feeling metal buttons - with great tactile feel.If you care about minimal bezels then don't bother - but if you think this bezel less obsession is a gimmick then this phone could be for you.Screen was lovely and sharp with good colour rendition.Battery life was awesome - 0% loss overnight in Aeroplane mode. I often finished most evenings with 50-60% battery life left. This was after having work email being pushed to the phone for 9hrs, as well Gmail,Whatsapp and other general browsing etc.Still has a headphone socket - yeah!Cons:None - until I upgraded to Oreo. The Oreo update messed up the Google Inbox notifications - apparently this is a general Oreo thing - so I cant really hold that against this phone. However, what I can blame Nokia for - is the fact that there is no easy way to roll back to Nougat - unless you try do some techie weird stuff with a risk of bricking the phone. NO thanks! So, the phone went back...a Real shame. When they launch the Nokia 8 2018 I will keep an eye on it as potential future phone.

I wanted a phone with guaranteed security updates, lots of space, and not much else. Particularly none of the bloatware that the other vendors tend to preinstall. This phone is not technically, as I understand it, part of the Android ONE line, but it still seems to meet most of the requirements. As soon as you start the install, it will upgrade to the most recent Android. Then it will probably give you a half dozen monthly security updates, one at a time. So, the install process isn't going to be quick. Once that's done, it will offer to restore your settings from the cloud (ie, from another phone's backups). This can be problematic if you have two-factor authentication enabled on your Google account!Make sure you have a set of hard-copy backup codes for your account, first, because it does this restore before your phone is enabled--you can't receive texts. However, once the install process was finished I had more space than on any previous phone, it's very fast, and it's as secure as my last Google phone. The only thing I missed were the alarm tunes I had on the cheap LG I'd been using since my Nexus 5x broke, and I found those online :-)And for those who've asked: it has two SIM slots, one of which can take _either_ a second SIM or an SD card

I was always a Nokia fanboy. Then Microsoft bought the company and created the windows phone. I switched from Symbian to Android with Sony and found my new 'go-to' brand. When I heard Nokia were independent again and had released their own android 'flagship' model I was curious. Nokia have always been known for their style so I wasn't that impressed by the standard smartphone look on offer. Upon inspecting the specs I was surprised to see hardware performance near identical, if not better, than the Samsung S8 and Sony XZ premium. At around £800 for those models and the Nokia being priced a £350 - I was scratching my head a little. The Nokia 8 also has 3 staggeringly good 13mp cameras with a dual camara option for better colour reproduction. The aluminium casing draws heat away from the processor and, as such, the phone hardly heats up like my previous phones have when watching videos or games. Because the phone stays cool - battery life is the best I've had since the glory day of Nokia past. I've had this phone for over a year and it is still excellent. If I lose it or it dies - I'll get the same again. At the current price of £250 unlocked - that is one heck of a bargain for an overlooked high-spec marvel.

This phone has the same internals as phone such as the pixel 2 and Samsung galaxy S8, but (at least at the moment) sells for about £250. I think this is by far the cheapest flagship smartphone you can currently buy. You don't get super thin bezels, but I personally like the design with the hardware buttons and finger print sensor on the bottom of the screen. Battery life is usually enough for a day and a half of quite heavy usage and can last 2 full days if you're just a little bit careful with the battery usage. I think that it has plenty of storage and even has an SD card slot which most phones seem to omit nowadays. Also one reason that I would pick this every time over an iPhone or Pixel 2 is that it has a headphone jack.Nokia has done a fantastic job with this phone. Build quality is excellent and it manages to be very affordable due to them focusing on the main components of the phone instead of pursuing expensive extras that I think many people don't feel the need for such as wireless charging. It runs Android one (Oreo at the moment, but should be upgraded to P) with no bloatware and receives regular security updates. Runs very quickly. I could not recommend this phone more.
