This is an un-timed point and click adventure with hidden object games and from the outset it is clear that this outing is amongst the highest echelon of the genre. The visuals, music and sound effects are all quite superb and compliment each other wonderfully to provide a marvellously cold and menacing atmosphere. Throughout the game the howling wind and wildly blowing snow may well have you reaching for a woolly scarf and gloves to keep warm.Notes, letters, newspapers and so on provide aspects of the back story but by far the most innovative items are the `Blair Witch' type video diaries. They can be reviewed on a camcorder and add an extra level of darkness to the experience. The main characters are not drawn but actually filmed and the acting is not bad but if a group of American teenagers gets too much for you then there are pause and stop buttons. The only other characters as such are animated and consist mainly of ghostly figures. The game makers have also made a valiant effort to make the game appear as English as possible and can be forgiven for the occasional but obvious typo, cultural and linguistic errors. There is also an ubiquitous journal which can be quite helpful if you're not sure what to do next. In any event, if all else fails, there is a built in walkthrough guide available via the main menu.As with most click and point games there is a lot of coming and going but the transfer times are very quick and it doesn't hold up the game play at all. When outside, any movement is accompanied with the sound of crunching snow underfoot which was also a nice touch. The hidden object games are a pleasure as well. Items are reasonably well drawn and, for the most part, their size, placement and orientation are quite normal. Although most scenes are crowded none were overly so but, in any event, each was very interesting in its own way and I never tired of having to revisit any of them. There are a fair number of mini games and time and effort has been spent to make them far more interesting than the usual fare. They also range in difficulty but can be skipped if need be.This game feels much longer than it actually is and can be played in less than a day but it is a worthwhile experience for both beginners and experts alike. It is far superior than the likes of Barrow Hill and other mediocre click and point games.Unreservedly 5 stars. Well done Big Fish.Other games in the MCF series are as follows if you want to try them out although, apart from R2R and 13th Skull, the others can't hold a candle to this game.1 - Huntsville2 - Prime Suspects3 - Ravenhearst4 - Madame Fate5 - Return to Ravenhearst7 - 13th Skull

Having just played a hidden object game that ONLY had hidden objects, I was relieved to see that this was a nice mixture of traditional point and click adventure, puzzle-solving, and finding hidden objects. I could have managed without the hidden objects, which I find a little tedious, but they weren't overdone, and could be skipped if you prefer. The puzzles were logical and could be solved with relative ease, while the 'wander around finding objects and working out where to use them', that old mainstay of adventure games, was also, for the most part straightforward - though inevitably there was a certain amount of wandering back and forth before I got it right. I had to consult an online walkthrough once, only to find I was clicking on the right object... but that my error was in not clicking on it repeatedly, which was a little annoying, but I got over that.As others have said, it was clearly a US product (there are wolves in Yorkshire?), but the Americanisations were slight, and didn't spoil anything. And yes, as someone else said, the premise does somewhat resemble the darker and more difficult Barrow Hill, but only superficially; I've played Barrow Hill, and Dire Grove was still original enough to be enjoyable in its own right. It took me around 12 hours to complete, and I had only found 41 of the 50 'morphing objects' before I reached the end, but these are bonus features not essential to completion, and I was very well pleased with the game overall. Strongly recommended for puzzle-gamers.

I have enjoyed previous Mystery Case Files games, particularly the 'Ravenhearst' thread, but found that the themes, effects and some of the attempts at humour to be increasingly daft and cringeworthy. This is not so with Dire Grove, which I think is MCF's best release to date.A good background story, complex puzzles and well-arranged Hidden Object sections combine to ensure hours of gameplay and excellent value for money.I didn't know what to expect when I saw that the story is revealed through live-action video clips, but I was pleasantly surprised. The four actors are talented, engaging and plausible and you feel for them as their fears increase (the chap who plays Jack, the guy with glasses,is also seriously gorgeous... not that that influenced me in any way, hehehe...).Quality artwork throughout and problems to solve that genuinely require thought make Dire Grove a fantastic product. Some of the effects and clips, however, would probably be a little too frightening for younger players, but that just adds to the fun for the rest of us!

THIS IS NOW ONE OF MY FAV HIDDEN OBJECTS/ADVENTURE GAME. IT HAS TAKEN ME THE LONGEST TO BEAT, OK STILL NOTHING LIKE A TRUE POINT & CLICK ADVETURE GAME i.e. SYBERIA, BUT A GOOD PLAYING TIME FOR A HIDDEN OBJECTS ADVENTURE. THE LIVE ACTION FOOTAGE REALLY ADDS TO THE GAME & I FOUND IT MORE SPOOKY THAN ANY 12 RATED HIDDEN OBJECTS GAME, I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY HAUNTED HALLS GETS A 12 RATING BUT THIS ONLY A 7 AS IT HAS A FEW BIT WHICH ARE QUITE CREEPY. IT ALSO HAS A BUILT IN SECOND GAME FOR YOU TO PLAY, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO COMPLETE THIS SECOND GAME TO WIN IT IS JUST ADDED FOR EXTRA FUN. THE SECOND GAME IS 50 MORPHING OBJECTS TO FIND AS YOU GO THROUGH THE GAME,I HAD ONLY FOUND 37 WHEN I FINISHED THE GAME & WISH I HAD GONE BACK FOR THE OTHER 13 FIRST. UNLIKE A LOT OF HIDDEN OBJECTS GAMES THAT SEEM TO HAVE AN ANTI-CLIMAX AT THE END THIS ONE IS RATHER GOOD. PERSONAL RATING 9/10

I'll start by saying I really enjoyed this game, it kept me entertained and gave me a few good frights! However, it does not require a huge amount of thinking - the puzzles are fairly simple and fast to complete, and the whole game took me under 5 hours to finish. If you're looking for complex puzzles, then this game is not for you. However, if you're looking for a fun way to spend a few hours, with a bit of thinking involved, I'd definitely recommend Dire Grove. The hidden object scenes are not too easy, and although there are quite a few of them, I didn't get tired of them like I have done with other games. The story line carried the game along nicely and provided the enjoyable frights mentioned earlier,as well as a great overall atmosphere. Though it didn't take me too long to complete, I found this game to be well worth the money and I'm glad I bought it.

I bought 'Dire Grove' for My wife as I suspected she would like hidden object mysteries. She loves it. Her first session lasted well over 5 hours with much more still left to solve. It looks like I will have to learn how to cook our meals.Apart from one very early and basic hidden object game this is our first experience of the genre so we cant compare it to others but we are very impressed.(I managed to do a couple of hours before she 'hogged the hog')Impressive graphics and clever.I suspect this one may be a difficult act to follow.A successful entry into a whole new world of small gift ideas.Silver ear-ring makers have had their day for a while.Addition to review.we have now tried several other h.o.games and I was right. This is a difficlt act to follow. Its still probably our favourite so far.

One of the better "Mystery Case File" PC games. The graphics are clear and there doesn't seem to be a problem with running the game on my PC which operates on a Windows 7 platform. The game isn't that simple to follow and you will need to use the help quide/strategy manual to explain clearly what you need to achieve in each section. The strategy guide was included on the disc I bought, but you need to check because you do have to buy guides for some of the mystery file games and they can be quite expensive. The game is probably best explained as a "point and click" game as you're mostly finding hidden objects, in a variety of scenes, to obtain clues which explain the "mystery/story" running through the game.Very easy going, no action and just an interesting "puzzle" really.

Quite a nice game. Some of the puzzles are quite brain-teasing, the art is nice, the story interesting and the acting nowhere near as hammy as I was dreading. The hidden object bit can get a bit tedious, and the story is a bit short, but those are minor gripes for an inexpensive bit of software. If I'd paid £20 I'd be cross at its shortness, but for less than a fiver its £5 well spent.Sufficiently spooky, without the gruesomeness that some descend to, and atmospheric. Its no Lost Crown (which sets the standard for all to follow) but its well worth getting if you like folk-lorey mystery mild horror.

Amazon asked me to review this game and I have to say I really enjoyed it. Wasn't quite up to the Ravenhurst series but wasn't far off it. Lots of moving around from areas and scenes in order to collect objects and information, sometimes you were really needing to remember where you left things or where clues were, and certainly wasn't as cheesy as some others in the genre. The puzzles were a good challenge - not too hard you gave up but took a nice amount of time. Good graphics as well. A really good game, kept me going for a while and the video clips were good fun. Certainly worth the go!

This game has a good story line for most of the game and the graphics are quiet good. Make sure you read the opening instructions if you have never played a game from this company as I didn't realise until I was 1/2 way through that I had to look for morphing objects as well! I think it would have been easier to have the hint button available in every scene as having to refer back to the manual when I wasn't sure where to go was frustrating. That being said, a fun game that I enjoyed and have already played a second time - still can't find all the morphing objects!

23.1.2011

I really enjoyed playing this game. The graphics were good and the story was good (if you take the American view of Yorkshire)! You could spend as long as you liked trying to solve the puzzles and the logic of the game itself. The hints were there if you wanted them. The collecting of items was quite diverse and the use of them generally appropriate. I bought it for a good price; it may be a bit expensive paying full price for a game which can be played (apparently) in 4 hours, although I think that most people would take at least twice as long.

10.6.2010

Probably the best balanced game of the 'hidden object' type that I have come across. The puzzles are principally a matter of logic. Items are collected and used to solve other problems. I particularly liked the inclusion of a walk-through; it's easy to call on only when needed, and there was certainly one particular problem (involving the wolf) that would not have ever occurred to me. In addition to the main game there are particular objects dotted around which, when identified, lead onto a further stage. Thoroughly enjoyable.

I have just started using these games and I have to say, out of the 4 games purchased, this was by far and away the best! Even though I went the wrong way from the start, I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to others. Lots of puzzles all the way round and, if you don't gather all the objects, you find it hard to proced to the next level. I admit I had to ask my son to help with some of the puzzles, but even so I was really impressed by the set up of the whole game and the graphics. I'm just off to buy some more.

I am a fan of Mystery Case Files games and find they have improved over the series particularly in production values and I thinkDire Grove is MCF's best release to date. The story is good and the hidden object pages are very well drawn, I enjoyed the video tape episodes which tell the story but if I have one critisism it would be that some of the puzzles are quite difficult although it is possible to skip any of these. Overall there were hours of gameplay and the game represents good value for money.
