It is fair to say that gaming has moved on since the original Myst was released in the mid 1990s. Back then the game captured a large and loyal following who appreciated the puzzles and the strange but captivating storyline. I played this game first on a Sega Saturn in 1995 and I was hooked from the start. The first thing to say about this game is that you are alone, on an island trying to solve puzzles that will help you to make progress. Some of those puzzles are relatively easy while others are very difficult – for example the sound puzzle inside the space rocket. But you get a lot of satisfaction when you solve each puzzle and I would suggest that no matter how frustrated you get at times, don't give in and seek help from other sources because you will regret it in the end. The satisfaction comes from solving everything for yourself. The imagination that has gone into this game is staggering. From the initial island of Myst you will be able to explore four more worlds and these are full of more puzzles for you to solve. All along there is a story being told and it is essential that you take note of everything along the way, read the books you find, because they will help you ultimately make decisions that will result in losing the game or succeeding in the end. Who will you trust?I recently redid this "Myst Masterpiece Edition" and though I remembered many of the solutions, I certainly enjoyed going through the whole experience again on my PC. The memories came flooding back the moment the music started in the beginning and it was a joy once more.Technology may have moved on and computer gaming may indeed be much more sophisticated today than it was back in 1995, but Myst proves that the experience is the thing that matters and if you haven’t played this game then you really should, because it is simply a gem of a game.

It is very difficult to describe the game of Myst (or its subsequent games)without overdosing on superlatives. From the very first notes of the introduction it transports you into worlds (and I meant that literally as well as figuratively)of imaginative gameplay. Although now over 15 years old, and much of what we see today has caught up with the complex and fanstically rendered graphics, it is still an awe-inspiring game. As the only character on the island(s) you really get the spirit of adventure where every corner reveals a world before you that overloads the senses with it's beauty. The game itself is a problem solving game and very much like a true pioneer much of the fun of this game is trying to figure out what it is you have to do.The problems themselvs vary in complexity from the straight-forward but fussy to the downright complex. Please don't be tempted to turn to a walkthough as this will spoil a great deal of fun and satisfaction when you have eventually figured out the mystery. One word of caution is that you do need to remember everything you are told (I ended up making notes!) there are puzzles where you will have to use what you have learnt to solve them.Be warned though, Myst takes time to explore and lots of time to complete (if you want to do it properly that is), make sure you can set several hours a session aside as time will sail past as you become lost and submerged in the game. This really does stand the test of time and if not already, will become a classic that any decent gameplayer will say - I did that!! Myst really is a Masterpiece in every sense. Go on do yourself a favour and become that explorer that you always dreamt of being.

Wanting to recapture my early gaming days, I bought this version of Myst to play on my Vista 32bit Sp1 laptop. I knew I might have a few problems getting it to run but I thought that for the price it was worth a try. I had to try several workrounds (ending up with the black screen and sounds several times) but finally hit upon a combination that seems to work. Here goes, it might work for someone else too.Firstly uninstall your current Quicktime including folders in program files. (This means that Itunes will not work - depends how much you want to play Myst!) Install Myst allowing the disk version of Quicktime(4.0) to install. Once the install is completed find myst.exe in the program files Red Orb folder.Right click and go to compatability. Leave the compatability mode unchecked, but put a tick in the following three boxes, 'Run in 640x480 screen resolution', 'Disable desktop composition' and 'Disable display scaling on high DPI settings'. Click apply and close everything. Now go to control panel and find the Quicktime icon. Open and change the following settings, Video - options, uncheck 'enable DCI'. Sound out - device - waveout (speakers), rate 22.050khz, 16bit, mono. Close. Also whilst running the game disable antivirus programs and programs that monitor your computer constantly - windows defender etc. Sometimes it is necessary to disable these in services.(I disable my wireless so that there is no incoming traffic whilst I'm playing.)So far the game has run well, and I am having fun solving the puzzles again after all these years albeit sightly quicker this time round! I hope this helps.

Why have you never played Myst before? Thats what was said to me by a friend so I bought it and it is a definite 'should not miss'. I have always liked strategy games and games that get your mind working but never tried this one before until now. I bought Myst Masterpiece Edition for a very low price on Amazon and I think its great.Though this game is not the full action adventure with blood and guts everywhere like most tedious recent games, it is point and click with fantastic views whichever way you turn with puzzles and mystery mixed into an ambient, mind boggling, captivating, and a bit addictive game. There are islands to explore in order to fulfil your quest with beautiful scenery and sounds that capture your mind.Takes a little while to grasp the story line but thats part of the game.Like I say, after all these years, I really feel I 'Myst' out on this but now I am ready to Riven,

I can still remember playing Myst for the first time on the Sega Saturn. It is certainly a game like no other! It's focuses on puzzle-solving, exploration and observation instead of action and survival. This makes it a very relaxing game to play. When I was young, I had no idea what I was doing and couldn't get anywhere but now I find the game fairly simple compared to its sequel 'Riven'. There's not quite the replay value or detail in the graphics. The atmosphere is amazing and the subtle soundtrack adds immensely to this. Quite impressive that one of the two game creators composed the music! I would thoroughly recommend buying this game as it's so original but I would also recommend buyingthe box set of all five Myst games as there's a lot more to discover.

some people have criticised this game for being little more than an interactive slideshow. Well, to a certain extent they are right, but when you look past that you find tourself playing something quite extraordinary. This game set a new standard in PC gaming, and after playing it is easy to see why. The soundtrack is eerie; perfect for the setting, whilst the graphics are smoother and crisper than ever before. The puzzles are the same; challenging, but you are rewarded with an immense feeling of self-satisfaction when you complete them - Bragging right are yours when you finish this game. The term 'Masterpiece edition' is most definitely appropriate.

No mmatter what other people say, faithful players of MYST must still believe that MYST is a really good game. The story and landscapes captivate any player, even those who are least pleased by the twists and turns provided through the game. However, I recommend this game only to those who have the patience to play it. Those who scorn patience and believe that everything must be hurried may find trouble in any place and the story starts rather strangely with no explications as to the story. All through it you may feel that you are being manipulated, but just remember that the final choice is up to you...

I recently bought this version of Myst as I had lost my original. It is advertised as working on 2k but, although it installed, it wouldn't run at all. Eventually I discovered that, if you have downloaded the latest Service Pack for 2k, you activate compatibility mode and right click on the desktop shortcut, then properties, and select Windows95 from the compatibility section. It then runs beautifully. Therefore - no need to hunt for fixes. This game is an absolute bargain and I am enjoying revisiting the puzzles and places.

Not an obviously fun game on the surface, what I love about the MYST series is the level of complexity in the puzzle solving, the first of many and a great benchmark for the rest to follow. There are many styles of puzzles and all of which you'll need a sharp eye and memory in order to solve.MYST is considered a masterpiece for it's ability to make the gamer feel they literally are stuck in that world with naught but their own wits, and these will be tested more than you'll first realise.

Great to remember and replay this game (for such a great price) but don't be fooled by the case and Amazon's advertising. It still doesn't run on Y2K. Still, with all these classics being revamped I've gone out of my way to dual boot my PC to enjoy Myst once again. I give my 3 year old daughter one more year and I'll let her onto it. Should be great for a curious young mind to run around these worlds.

It is a bit clunky and dated now and navigating about (especially in the tree age) is a chore but it is very cheap and a good introduction to the idea of non violent gaming. ##DO NOT## buy it if you are deaf. Many of the puzzles rely solely on hearing and will be impossible. If you can get it then play the "Real Myst" version which is easier to navigate about in and is more involving.

I noticed a couple of reviewers mentioned a problem running this software on their version of windows, a quick fix that may help is to:-install the game-right click on the shotcut for it on your desktop-select 'properties'-click on the 'compatability' tab-and select the version of windows you want the game to run on.I've done this with a few old games i have.Hope it helps.

This is the first in the Myst series of puzzle games. Although I played it a long time ago, I decided to by it again. The puzzles are great and not extremely hard. The graphics are a bit dated, but that is to be expected. Basically you have to solve the puzzles on the island to find out what happened to everyone.

Coz everything he lists as bad with this game is what makes it great!Ground breaking graphics and sound for its day, with well constructed puzzles that will have you staring at your screen for hours.Note that sound is a must for this, plus it helps not being tone deaf too!
